  1. I saw this alot when I was a kid & after awhile they cut it & ruined it. "Lady & The Monster" - Erich von Stroheim was doing brain surgery & told the nurse (vera ralston) "giglisaw" & she replied "No not the giglisaw...anything but that" it was hilarious. On the version I have from scifi channel it is gone...... that is sad.
  2. Oh come on......if you saw the movie you would know all that stuff did happen altho all I did was make it sound interesting. after all it is next to impossible to describe the intended or unintended meanings of a visual story without embellishing it somewhat. I know you love me & you don't wanna lose me to big brother. don't worry chile I'll always be around. if you thought the thought police were thinkin about nailin me think again.
  3. Dig that crazy laptop! This is TCM board. Not the Anti-Sex League...Ecstacy is not a crime...on this board!
  4. yolande donlan gets drunky & ugh when she does she ugh, gets frisky & ugh when she does she ugh, gets **** & ugh when she does she ugh, gets down & dirty & ugh when she did she, ugh, copped a bug & ugh, spread it to 80,000 men! girl juss can't keep her draws on! Here's Yolande takin a drunky dip with her clothes on. Of course the clothes won't be on for long if she can convince the doc to dip the stick. Don't worry, folks, he already got vaccinated so her dizzeaze won't affect him..."I been really tryin ,baby, tryin to hold back these feelins for so long... but if you feel like I feel, baby, cmon ooh cmon oooh let's get it on...."
  5. "Uh, Larry, duh lab calld - yer brane iz reddy..."
  6. uh , kim , you got 20,000 less suspects than you need. the title is 80,000 suspects. I have the movie. val guest directed.here are some pix british movies are the greatest movies ever made. nobody don't know it cuz hollywood don't show em. not only that hollywood gypped em out o dough causin the brit film industry to collapse. its a fact but not acknowledged.
  7. this is a columbia pic using their star Kerwin Matthews...columbia was hollywood's repository of pix with controvery problems. their library went unseen for 50 years. for instance MGM did not like "The Go-Between" so they sold it to Columbia. won the cannes festival grand prize. It's a HAMMER PICTURE!...........on tcm wed nite 1:15 am
  8. rented a movie on vhs from WARNER BROS Horror of Dracula........ I saw this as a kid so I know the movie sort of. The movie was cut & the sound was out of synch. One of the cuts is important. When Jonathon stakes the girl who bit him, You see the stake & blood & she slowly turns into an old woman. This was completely removed no stake nothing! Shows you where WARNER BROS is at when it comes to censorship. AND the print looked vastly old & faded. TCM is owned by WARNER BROS. Maybe thats why the channel is so lame & candycoated. We need a new channel entirely different from TCM. with guest stars & fun movies. & british pix like Anna Karenina.......
  9. I'll record all those movies & send you them in the mail. pm me with a list of titles & a mailing address. Canadians are great people. Years ago I called a guy in Canada I did not even know to record stuff off CBC & he did it! I'd like to return the favor if I may. be happy to.
  10. "TCM isn't responsible for the calumnies you enumerate, the films' copyright-holders are. Studios re-cut their films all the time; just because prints survive of some of the bowdlerized titles doesn't mean that those materials are available, in good shape, and the the copyrights on the earlier versions are still in effect (this is something particularly common in the case of British films re-worked and re-titled by their American distributors)." I never said TCM was responsible but by showing the bastardized version they become accomplices after the fact. Why do we have a writers guild? Don't our studios have any respect for writers rights? I have a tape of "Fortune is a Woman" & it has a Columbia logo. You tryin to tell me Columbia don't have the movie? btw the version shown on TCM had 1. fake letterbox with the visual information cropped (I call that censorship) & abuse of the director altering the aspect ratio. 2. the voices were out of synch. changing the title is bad enough but to continue the charade for 50 years is a bit much. yeah yeah yeah I heard your spiel about copyrights... ever heard of writers rights? How do you know they don't have the movies? Maybe the movie has to be bought. & Sony is too cheap!? Retitling is an abuse. After 50 years you'd think they would have had enough time to sort themselves out & correct the continuing abuse. Its an insult to the viewers as well. A movie is cut by the film editor. That is all the editing the film needs. it passes a board of censors. after 50 years enough is enough. Why don't you ask Robert Osborne for his opinion? thats why we have a board. To talk about this stuff & reach a conclusion.
  11. Just like I said before about removing post counts. A guy with 1000 posts telling people without alot of posts their opinion is invalid. Fella you just proved me right. We need to remove all post counts off the board. 1000 posts is like a gunslinger with a six gun. they walk around shootin people down for being new. "Oooohhhhh ya got me.....purty good shot fer a dude......putta nutha quarter in n try again, sucka..."
  12. I always erase over robert osborne when I record a movie. nothing personal. TCM shows bastardized versions of movies. I assume its ok with robert osborne to show a version of a movie that the author does/did not approve. Its unethical & gives legitimacy to the practice of creating bastardized versions. I'll name a few, She Played With Fire is a bastardized version of Fortune is a Woman. The title is absurd because the "she" Arlene Dahl has nothing to do with the fire. I mean while this may be a trivial thing to TCM it is not trivial to the authors. There are prints in existence with the correct title & editing. The Black Book is a bastardized version of Reign of Terror. The original title of Pickup Alley is Interpol. The original title of Gypsy Girl is Sky West & Crooked. The original title of Blood on Satan's Claw is Satan's Skin. When artists create a movie the title is important. Many times the title is the same as the novel on which it is based. People who change the title are not included in the creative process. October Man is 110min. TCM bastardized version is 95 min. The film editor of October Man did not edit the 95 min. version. Curse of the Demon is a bastardized version of Night of the Demon & the 81min. cut is not edited by the film editor. As long as nobody says anything then the abuse of artists rights is going to continue......I only named a few but there are many many more titles.......... perhaps you guys'd care to name some.....
  13. TCM just showed it & I am going to call it TCBM - Turner Classic Blurry Movies....... the movie is so blurry you almost wonder why they bothered to show it! What is the point of ruining the movie? Not only is it blurry but the heads are flattened out. I recorded it here locally in the mid 90's & that version is sharp & clear. I ran them both together on two tvs & I was impressed by Anthony Dawson's creepy portrayal as the killer. Its a great Crime & Punishment type pic rarely shown which makes it even more disappointing TCBM chose to mess it up. its available on video from Sinister Cinema. Who is Denis O'Dea? this must be a mistake. The movie stars Raymond Huntley as the detective & the girl is Patricia Wayne. Also creepy good is Brenda de Banzie.
  14. I found a page in which is mentioned the version of the movie I talked about. 1983 Metropolis, Janus Films, Voyager Co., Los Angeles, California, 1983, 1 videocassette, VHS, sound, b&w, 1/2 in, 107 min. Newly produced electronic music soundtrack. From the Janus Films Collection. Editing and English intertitles by Channing ****, Julian Johnson and Edward Adams. Reissue of the version released as motion picture by Brandon Films. Originally released as motion picture in 35 mm. by Paramount Famous Lasky Corporation in 1927. what they did was use the electronic sound off the bbc version on a bad quality speeded up version of the same movie. thus suppressing the original ........."if it ain't broke don't fix it" here is a lobby card I found a page in which the author saw the 70's BBC version & he had this to say: "various restorations of the movie were attempted over the decades by responsible parties, as well. The BBC did a very effective one in the mid-'70s that was a hit on public television in America, utilizing an electronic music track that sometimes mimicked some of the industrial images on the screen"
  15. here's a couple of colorized pics of Rotwang metropolis is a great fun movie to colorize. But I did find out who owns the BBC version - Janus Films. I will explain. I recorded the BBC version in 1978 off KCET in los angeles. After that it was never shown again. However I erased over by mistake the last 5 min. Then in the 1980's Metropolis was shown on Bravo & it was the BBC version but speeded up & bad quality. So I was able to rerecord the missing 5 min. As soon as they shake hands it cut away & said: Brandon films & then Janus films. Janus degraded the beautiful BBC version & trashed it. & suppressed it. Guess I was lucky to record it the first time!
  16. In the 20's the projectionist controlled the speed of the film. He could slow it down when necessary by cranking slower. The projectionist was a tough job. You had to crank the entire movie! as you can see the crank handle is on the left side of the projector.
  17. This guy doesn't know for sure its 18 fps. he is guessing. the BBC slowed the film down until it looked natural. This is a professional tv business operation. The electronic effects are so well done & synchronized with the picture all other versions cannot compare. If you look at the machines, steam & whistles - each has its own sound. They didn't print extra frames. They slowed the movie down using video process. They didn't alter a frame of the movie. the bbc sound people are way ahead of the scene. they did doctor who effects. the reason its not for sale is a mystery because it should be. the British have a great work ethic. If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well. Look at how the Brownlow/photoplay/channel four music is compared to others. they are the best.
  18. I looked it up on google & "In the 1970s the BBC prepared a version with electronic sound that ran at 18 frames per second and consequently had much more realistic-looking movement. Since there is no concrete evidence of Fritz Lang's wishes on this subject, it continues to be hotly debated within the silent film community." here is another one: "Some of the better versions of Metropolis have tried to alleviate this speed problem, with variable results. A late '70's BBC reconstruction added a few shots, including some semi-nude 'Garden Girls' glimpsed briefly when Freder romps with his preppy pals among the ferns and fountains. This presentation lasts about two hours and seems to be projecting the film at about 16 or 18 frames per second. This lends the proceedings a certain gravity. The marching workers trod heavily instead of jerkily. Freder's mad dashes look blurry, but at a more natural speed (is this right? Lang probably wanted Freder to be somewhat speeded-up.) This projection speed, coupled with a moody synthesized score that respects the rhythms of the film itself, is a real asset. Unfortunately the BBC's cutting and intertitles are the American digest version. And the title cards haven't been trimmed to reflect the fact that the film is being projected more slowly. Each title card seems to last forever, bogging down the whole show." (I don't agree with this last criticism.) This remains the best version I have seen. If anybody wants it pm me........... she's got a body that won't quit here's a colorized robot maria. I would like to see them colorize the BBC version. it would be amazing.
  19. I know most people hate colorizing. For me it depends on the movie. The plus is they must use the best film available so in that sense at least they care. I have a colorized version of White Zombie. I taped it 10 years ago off a far away tv station. It is an edited version about 45 min. I wonder if anybody has heard of it being for sale? the print is the best I've seen - from an archive. & the color is so well done if you didn't know it was b/w you'd think it was originally a color pic. the TCM version is lacking detail. it is very soft. They also didn't bother to restore at least one scene. When the girl is carrying the knife & is going to kill her husband, she looks at him & you see a pan across from his face to his neck very slowly. it was cut but in another version I have you can see the full pan. there is also a piece missing off another scene where they are talking. How they can say its restored is pure bs. I think TCM should show the colorized version.
  20. it is difficult to judge since the movie is cut. it originally in a theater was 3 hours. these german pix are very slow. when those men walk in the beginning is slow. I have a version that was only shown once in 1978. (on tv) it is the proper speed & has an electronic soundtrack. I wouldn't call it music but it is very well done. it is 120 min. the kino version is too speeded up so for me it is unwatchable. the speed is everything but here in usa we tend to be in a hurry. however in 1927 there was not so much media so a movie like this would place images in the brain that would last. you need to see the electronic version to really appreciate it. it is an attempt to provide sound for the picture that is unusual & in this case very sucessful. after seeing the electronic version, the kino version is SkWaReSvIlLe
  21. When I talk about a decline in music, well it is a gigantic noticable occurance. In the 60's the industry used real musicians with skill. orchastras with strings brass, etc. after the decline, electronics replaced musicians. Real music is a team effort. Motown had their own orchestra ... good things do not last forever. One thing I wanna talk about is how much Hollywood studios in the 60's owned record labels. Warner Bros., Fox, Columbia, MGM, Paramount, United Artists all had music divisions so it may be of interest to movie fans. Northern Soul is a genre now but back then it was just making records. My favorite records to collect are I guess you;d call crime jazz. Movie/tv.promo records like for instance: Ironside by quincy jones, mannix by lalo schifrin, checkmate by john williams etc. one of the best least known record genres. tell you more later.......... glad you liked the page!
  22. It's not a discussion unless more than one person is involved. & up until now it is just me talking sort of a lecture. The special features is ok but we lived without them for ,uh, since movies began so they are hardly necessary. What really bothers me that I haven't addressed until now is why, if we are changing our tv, not get the whole world on the same tv system? why bother changing it & still incompatible with Europe? to me it is self defeating. all the tvs are going to be obsolete. still I am going to use my old stuff. I don't care about hollywood or society. I still listen to records. I can't afford to change.
  23. hi folks... no need to reply as I know your very busy with your movies. Just wanna say I did correct the problem I had with the sound & have been listening to these songs. The funny thing is I talked about music & the 60's BEFORE I found this page. so basically the collectors independently verify me ....... I dug out LOVE CHILD to hear the thump of the body hitting the ground in the intro. perhaps its a cliche but back in the day a girl being pregnant and the shame attached to it would cause the girl to take a leap off a tenament roof. I refer you to the movie THE HOODLUM 1950 in which a girl is impregnated by Lawrence Tierney & takes the hop of the roof. In the song LOVE CHILD the story in the song is the girl contemplating this. On the 45 the thump of the body landing is so loud you can feel it! This is much removed from any other issue but still recognizable. Just wanted to clear that up. BTW a recurring theme should you decide to listen to the songs, is how much music was made independently of the big companies. Later on the big companies bought the independents & naturally the amount of music diminished significantly. The quality as well. In the 80's a sad decline in music began which continues. In the 60's & 70's music was King. Movies were in decline in the 60's & recovered in the 70's but declined for good in the 80's. dig the Hitsville page. It's awesome!
