  1. I just had my digital box turned off for non payment. right in the middle of "october man"...... oh well I guess if I can't afford it I have no right to have it. Maybe I'll appreciate it more when / if I get it again. hope it'll still be around by then. its a great board - yer great movie fans.. tcm has no idea it has such great fans. I'll still post around whenever possible. I still get movies off local tv. & I can write to them & request stuff. c ya round b checkin u out...

  2. Its possible to like both movies equally for different reasons. The Killers has a great opening. The two hit men talk about "bright boy" & what do they do in town..."they eat the big dinner"...."Bright boy says he don't know...".... "bright boy says he wouldn't say"......great lines - great writing - great casting with charles mcgraw & wiliam conrad.....& the guy who played bright boy...cant say enufabout the beginning of the killers. it is my favorite beginning of a movie.

  3. nobody stays on top forever. nobody has an endless supply of great visual ideas. The Jokers might be the most difficult to find. I recorded it off AMC in the mid 90's. could be owned by Universal. Edward Fox has a role in the pic. he keeps trying to guess who the thieves are.

after 1967 michael winner became big. that maybe good or bad. the style of these 3 pix fit the time & place & that swingin england scene so well so beautifully - its bound to be downhill afterwards. england movies are all about employment. they use huge amounts of people. in these 3 pix the people are magnificent. aside from turning Oliver Reed loose for three great roles - you have to like Oliver Reed. if you don't like him then it is your problem. in my opinion, Oliver Reed is way better than Charles Bronson. really there is no comparison but michael winner AND Oliver Reed is a dynamic duo & the content of the stories are fantastic. it was downhill for oliver reed as well. just for that brief time a window opened up & a multicolored light shown its brilliance & the just like that no more window. poof it was gone.

  4. I'm actually waiting for a movie right now by him but my main point of interest is the 3 pix he made with oliver reed 1964-67. these 3 movies are as good as movies get. the first

The System is loaded with witty dialog & is very difficult to describe. Its complicated as hell but so well done that you could just cry at any moment. So many poignant scenes. You wish it would never end & has a great catchy theme song sung by The Searchers. (the title was changed for usa to The Girl Getters) The copy I have is the original edit from CBC. I believe the american version is missing 10 min. the second

The Jokers has Oliver & Michael Crawford stealing the crown jewels. Michael Winner is again on top form & I tell you it is another complicated but exhilarating ride you wish could never end. Once again loaded with interesting bits - overloaded is what he does so well. all three movies have Michael Winner setting up sides in a class war & battling it out! the third

I'll Never Forget Whatisname has Oliver doing battle with Orson Welles & many other people & just like the first two this movie is overloaded with wit, sarcasm, symbolism, poignant scenes & it is mind boggling how all 3 of these movies are so similar yet so interesting - could be luck! Unforgettable opening scene has Oliver Reed walking thru London with an ax on his shoulder. The music is by Francis Lai. awesome. I will try & show some pix But feel free to post pix if you like. I am not sure about the availability of these movies. You would think in this age of dvd theyd be easy to get but I had to wait & they were not at all easy to come by. Michael Winner - a great moviemaker!

  5. Oh come on......if you saw the movie you would know all that stuff did happen altho all I did was make it sound interesting. after all it is next to impossible to describe the intended or unintended meanings of a visual story without embellishing it somewhat. I know you love me & you don't wanna lose me to big brother. don't worry chile I'll always be around. if you thought the thought police were thinkin about nailin me think again.

  6. yolande donlan gets drunky & ugh when she does she ugh, gets frisky & ugh when she does she ugh, gets **** & ugh when she does she ugh, gets down & dirty & ugh when she did she, ugh, copped a bug & ugh, spread it to 80,000 men! girl juss can't keep her draws on!

    32793.1020.A.jpg

Here's Yolande takin a drunky dip with her clothes on. Of course the clothes won't be on for long if she can convince the doc to dip the stick. Don't worry, folks, he already got vaccinated so her dizzeaze won't affect him..."I been really tryin ,baby, tryin to hold back these feelins for so long... but if you feel like I feel, baby, cmon ooh cmon oooh let's get it on...."

  7. rented a movie on vhs from WARNER BROS Horror of Dracula........ I saw this as a kid so I know the movie sort of. The movie was cut & the sound was out of synch. One of the cuts is important. When Jonathon stakes the girl who bit him, You see the stake & blood & she slowly turns into an old woman. This was completely removed no stake nothing! Shows you where WARNER BROS is at when it comes to censorship. AND the print looked vastly old & faded. TCM is owned by WARNER BROS. Maybe thats why the channel is so lame & candycoated.

We need a new channel entirely different from TCM. with guest stars & fun movies. & british pix like Anna Karenina.......

  8. I'll record all those movies & send you them in the mail. pm me with a list of titles & a mailing address. Canadians are great people. Years ago I called a guy in Canada I did not even know to record stuff off CBC & he did it! I'd like to return the favor if I may. be happy to.

  9. "TCM isn't responsible for the calumnies you enumerate, the films' copyright-holders are. Studios re-cut their films all the time; just because prints survive of some of the bowdlerized titles doesn't mean that those materials are available, in good shape, and the the copyrights on the earlier versions are still in effect (this is something particularly common in the case of British films re-worked and re-titled by their American distributors)."

I never said TCM was responsible but by showing the bastardized version they become accomplices after the fact. Why do we have a writers guild? Don't our studios have any respect for writers rights? I have a tape of "Fortune is a Woman" & it has a Columbia logo. You tryin to tell me Columbia don't have the movie? btw the version shown on TCM had 1. fake letterbox with the visual information cropped (I call that censorship) & abuse of the director altering the aspect ratio. 2. the voices were out of synch. changing the title is bad enough but to continue the charade for 50 years is a bit much. yeah yeah yeah I heard your spiel about copyrights... ever heard of writers rights?

How do you know they don't have the movies? Maybe the movie has to be bought. & Sony is too cheap!? Retitling is an abuse. After 50 years you'd think they would have had enough time to sort themselves out & correct the continuing abuse. Its an insult to the viewers as well. A movie is cut by the film editor. That is all the editing the film needs. it passes a board of censors. after 50 years enough is enough. Why don't you ask Robert Osborne for his opinion? thats why we have a board. To talk about this stuff & reach a conclusion.

  10. Just like I said before about removing post counts. A guy with 1000 posts telling people without alot of posts their opinion is invalid. Fella you just proved me right. We need to remove all post counts off the board. 1000 posts is like a gunslinger with a six gun. they walk around shootin people down for being new.

"Oooohhhhh ya got me.....purty good shot fer a dude......putta nutha quarter in n try again, sucka..."

  11. I always erase over robert osborne when I record a movie. nothing personal.

TCM shows bastardized versions of movies. I assume its ok with robert osborne to show a version of a movie that the author does/did not approve. Its unethical & gives legitimacy to the practice of creating bastardized versions. I'll name a few,

She Played With Fire is a bastardized version of Fortune is a Woman. The title is absurd because the "she" Arlene Dahl has nothing to do with the fire. I mean while this may be a trivial thing to TCM it is not trivial to the authors. There are prints in existence with the correct title & editing.

The Black Book is a bastardized version of Reign of Terror.

The original title of Pickup Alley is Interpol.

The original title of Gypsy Girl is Sky West & Crooked.

The original title of Blood on Satan's Claw is Satan's Skin.

When artists create a movie the title is important. Many times the title is the same as the novel on which it is based. People who change the title are not included in the creative process.

October Man is 110min. TCM bastardized version is 95 min. The film editor of October Man did not edit the 95 min. version.

Curse of the Demon is a bastardized version of Night of the Demon & the 81min. cut is not edited by the film editor.

As long as nobody says anything then the abuse of artists rights is going to continue......I only named a few but there are many many more titles.......... perhaps you guys'd care to name some.....

  12. TCM just showed it & I am going to call it TCBM - Turner Classic Blurry Movies....... the movie is so blurry you almost wonder why they bothered to show it! What is the point of ruining the movie? Not only is it blurry but the heads are flattened out.

    l_43752_0b88e442.jpg0000142_large.jpg

I recorded it here locally in the mid 90's & that version is sharp & clear. I ran them both together on two tvs & I was impressed by Anthony Dawson's creepy portrayal as the killer. Its a great Crime & Punishment type pic rarely shown which makes it even more disappointing TCBM chose to mess it up. its available on video from Sinister Cinema.

Who is Denis O'Dea? this must be a mistake. The movie stars Raymond Huntley as the detective & the girl is Patricia Wayne. Also creepy good is Brenda de Banzie.

  13. I found a page in which is mentioned the version of the movie I talked about.

    1983

Metropolis, Janus Films, Voyager Co., Los Angeles, California, 1983, 1 videocassette, VHS, sound, b&w, 1/2 in, 107 min. Newly produced electronic music soundtrack. From the Janus Films Collection. Editing and English intertitles by Channing ****, Julian Johnson and Edward Adams. Reissue of the version released as motion picture by Brandon Films. Originally released as motion picture in 35 mm. by Paramount Famous Lasky Corporation in 1927.

what they did was use the electronic sound off the bbc version on a bad quality speeded up version of the same movie. thus suppressing the original ........."if it ain't broke don't fix it"

    here is a lobby card

    metrop1.jpg

I found a page in which the author saw the 70's BBC version & he had this to say:

"various restorations of the movie were attempted over the decades by responsible parties, as well. The BBC did a very effective one in the mid-'70s that was a hit on public television in America, utilizing an electronic music track that sometimes mimicked some of the industrial images on the screen"

  14. robot1_and_rotwang.jpg

here's a couple of colorized pics of Rotwang

    rotwang.jpg

metropolis is a great fun movie to colorize.

But I did find out who owns the BBC version - Janus Films.

I will explain. I recorded the BBC version in 1978 off KCET in los angeles. After that it was never shown again. However I erased over by mistake the last 5 min. Then in the 1980's Metropolis was shown on Bravo & it was the BBC version but speeded up & bad quality. So I was able to rerecord the missing 5 min. As soon as they shake hands it cut away & said: Brandon films & then Janus films. Janus degraded the beautiful BBC version & trashed it. & suppressed it. Guess I was lucky to record it the first time!
