I looked it up on google &
"In the 1970s the BBC prepared a version with electronic sound that ran at 18 frames per second and consequently had much more realistic-looking movement. Since there is no concrete evidence of Fritz Lang's wishes on this subject, it continues to be hotly debated within the silent film community."
here is another one:
"Some of the better versions of Metropolis have tried to alleviate this speed problem, with variable results. A late '70's BBC reconstruction added a few shots, including some semi-nude 'Garden Girls' glimpsed briefly when Freder romps with his preppy pals among the ferns and fountains. This presentation lasts about two hours and seems to be projecting the film at about 16 or 18 frames per second. This lends the proceedings a certain gravity. The marching workers trod heavily instead of jerkily. Freder's mad dashes look blurry, but at a more natural speed (is this right? Lang probably wanted Freder to be somewhat speeded-up.) This projection speed, coupled with a moody synthesized score that respects the rhythms of the film itself, is a real asset. Unfortunately the BBC's cutting and intertitles are the American digest version. And the title cards haven't been trimmed to reflect the fact that the film is being projected more slowly. Each title card seems to last forever, bogging down the whole show." (I don't agree with this last criticism.)
This remains the best version I have seen. If anybody wants it pm me...........

she's got a body that won't quit

here's a colorized robot maria. I would like to see them colorize the BBC version. it would be amazing.

I know most people hate colorizing. For me it depends on the movie. The plus is they must use the best film available so in that sense at least they care. I have a colorized version of White Zombie. I taped it 10 years ago off a far away tv station. It is an edited version about 45 min. I wonder if anybody has heard of it being for sale? the print is the best I've seen - from an archive. & the color is so well done if you didn't know it was b/w you'd think it was originally a color pic.
the TCM version is lacking detail. it is very soft. They also didn't bother to restore at least one scene. When the girl is carrying the knife & is going to kill her husband, she looks at him & you see a pan across from his face to his neck very slowly. it was cut but in another version I have you can see the full pan. there is also a piece missing off another scene where they are talking. How they can say its restored is pure bs. I think TCM should show the colorized version.

it is difficult to judge since the movie is cut. it originally in a theater was 3 hours. these german pix are very slow. when those men walk in the beginning is slow. I have a version that was only shown once in 1978. (on tv) it is the proper speed & has an electronic soundtrack. I wouldn't call it music but it is very well done. it is 120 min. the kino version is too speeded up so for me it is unwatchable. the speed is everything but here in usa we tend to be in a hurry. however in 1927 there was not so much media so a movie like this would place images in the brain that would last. you need to see the electronic version to really appreciate it. it is an attempt to provide sound for the picture that is unusual & in this case very sucessful. after seeing the electronic version, the kino version is SkWaReSvIlLe

When I talk about a decline in music, well it is a gigantic noticable occurance. In the 60's the industry used real musicians with skill. orchastras with strings brass, etc. after the decline, electronics replaced musicians. Real music is a team effort. Motown had their own orchestra ... good things do not last forever.
One thing I wanna talk about is how much Hollywood studios in the 60's owned record labels. Warner Bros., Fox, Columbia, MGM, Paramount, United Artists all had music divisions so it may be of interest to movie fans. Northern Soul is a genre now but back then it was just making records. My favorite records to collect are I guess you;d call crime jazz.
Movie/tv.promo records like for instance: Ironside by quincy jones, mannix by lalo schifrin, checkmate by john williams etc. one of the best least known record genres. tell you more later..........
glad you liked the page!

It's not a discussion unless more than one person is involved. & up until now it is just me talking sort of a lecture. The special features is ok but we lived without them for ,uh, since movies began so they are hardly necessary. What really bothers me that I haven't addressed until now is why, if we are changing our tv, not get the whole world on the same tv system? why bother changing it & still incompatible with Europe? to me it is self defeating. all the tvs are going to be obsolete. still I am going to use my old stuff. I don't care about hollywood or society. I still listen to records.
I can't afford to change.

hi folks... no need to reply as I know your very busy with your movies. Just wanna say I did correct the problem I had with the sound & have been listening to these songs. The funny thing is I talked about music & the 60's BEFORE I found this page. so basically the collectors independently verify me ....... I dug out LOVE CHILD to hear the thump of the body hitting the ground in the intro. perhaps its a cliche but back in the day a girl being pregnant and the shame attached to it would cause the girl to take a leap off a tenament roof. I refer you to the movie THE HOODLUM 1950 in which a girl is impregnated by Lawrence Tierney & takes the hop of the roof.
In the song LOVE CHILD the story in the song is the girl contemplating this. On the 45 the thump of the body landing is so loud you can feel it! This is much removed from any other issue but still recognizable. Just wanted to clear that up.
BTW a recurring theme should you decide to listen to the songs, is how much music was made independently of the big companies. Later on the big companies bought the independents & naturally the amount of music diminished significantly. The quality as well. In the 80's a sad decline in music began which continues. In the 60's & 70's music was King. Movies were in decline in the 60's & recovered in the 70's but declined for good in the 80's. dig the Hitsville page. It's awesome!

"This film helps one to understand why the Japanese came around so easily to supporting American occupying forces right after the war. I suspect there were a large number of Japanese who didn?t support the fascist militarism of the war era."
maybe. I suspect having two major cities nuked into jelly might be more reason. After all Bush only blew up a few wtc buildings & he is enormously hated.

I think if you watch a movie too many times you can ruin it but I have seen these many times & never seem to get bored:
invisable man (I always laugh out loud when he hits the old lady with a beer mug)
october man
curse of the demon
3rd key
lady vanishes
iceman cometh (I have an old tape of the 4 hour version it never bores me because you become one of the people in the pub)

I especially like the kind where a group of people will be at a mansion & somebody is killed like "Phantom of Crestwood" 1932 ...... they were popular into the forties & the novelty wore off. I have a bunch on tape........13th chair.....living ghost......while the patient slept........patient in room 18......secrets of the french police....many others I can't remember now.

I did go down the library with a list of 100 or so & I came home with 20. The best by far was the 2nd autobiography by Anthony Quinn. His first one was a mess & in my opinion it bothered him so he wrote another one & really searched his soul. There are so many good stories in it. Please get the 2nd Anthony Quinn book. Tell em I sent cha.

came across this page by accident. But being a record collector, I couldn't help being interested. Here is a bunch of white guys mostly from England reviewing their favorite american soul hits! It an interactive page so you can hear the songs. unfortunately my computer was unable to do so at this time but I was carried away by the sincerity & passion of the collectors. I have none of these records & have not heard of any of them in my life. check it out on a rainy day with a cup of tea.

I never said my collection was recorded from tcm. actually the majority is from amc. but I do record tcm versions to compare playing them simultaneously. in my opinion the post numbers need to be removed & replaced by location. that is what this other board did. (only 978 to go)

If you do not mind I am going to post here what I wrote in the other thread just so it is not missed by those who responded in other one. I am so sorry.
I don't know if I should dupicate, copy and paste, you know, but am going to just cause I feel bad for the most part and would like to know if I can still belong? I think I was having a mood swing yesterday while having a mood swing. Don't that beat all?
Well before I copy here, I have one question about Marilyn Monroe. Why do they say her debut was in All About Eve when it really wasn't?
I am recording Wuthering Heights tonight because I have only read the book. And I like that Olivier guy a lot. I hope you accept my apologies and I hope I will be accepted in the sense of just being a member. I don't need a best friend. I have those. And a new washing machine. Just trying to inject some humor. Have a great classic movie night all...
Dear God in heaven. I did not mean to start all this. Folks I am sorry. First may I say Kyle that comment about thread count on sheets or topics caused me to spit my Dr. Pepper.
Folks, I do apologize and believe there is more good than bad here.
I was in a mood last night from a damned washing machine that caused me to have to buy a new one today. But due to our forefathers I saved 170.00. Cause of presidents day. I don't get a refund on taxes but due to presidency I get to save money on washing machines Now aint that something.
I don't and won't defend myself. Yesterday the first thread I read was by bio about newcomers thinking it was a welcome letter. Well hells bells it wasn't. I then went and read things that caused me to sit and ponder if I wanted to be part of this. He went through hell. I wish he'd answer me back as I sent prayers and encouragement due to that damned disease having affected my family to a point.
I lost it when my washing machine went off balance at the same time a remark about incest was made.
I do not sleep with my sister.
I would like to belong and I know how to stick to the topic of movies. I made a few threads yesterday and posted to several others. That was brought up, the part of me posting so many.
In conclusion, I apologize to most, not that person about incest.
I have to ask, may I stay and post and create topics of interest, that I think would be to the board, or is it too late. I did not mean this to happen. It does seem tight knit. But hell I understand that.
It is interesting some suggest it is a forum for films and stay to the topic. I agree. But some of you have become friends. I was not looking for that. If it happens it happens. And I know that takes time. But I' be happy to make a friend who can help with this damned laundry.
So please advise. I hope I am not opening myself to a can of ridicule because I am out of raid to spray it. I said I would stay on topic and I will, this just needed to be said due to nature of subject. And to think I have Keith Carradine to thank for this.
what a coincidence! We think alike! (only 980 to go)

that post was a joke. I need to write [[[[[[JOKE!]]]]]] after my jokes. think tcm cares what you request? they show the same lame movies over and over. in a communist country the same movie over & over is brainwashing. you got a better chance throwing pennies in a wishing well. damn right. damn right you are wrong. were not the same person.
-
don;t you see my plan? if I can keep this discussion going long enough I'll reach 1000 posts then I'll be respected & part of the clique. its my only hope.
-
yeah your right. its all my imagination. I'm the little boy in THE WINDOW just makin up tales. who'd believe me anyway even if it was true? oh yeah these people are friendly. how could I have thought otherwise? I bet they think were the same person = the troll they are so afraid of. thats a laugh. I wouldn't know how to be a troll. what do they do anyway? make threads about vhs v dvd? ok you got me! I did it! you have the right to remain silent. oh right you already did that.
-
You guys kill me. I really mean that. Here you go agreeing with each other your clique is not a clique. I guess if you make a tape of that & play it while your asleep you'll believe it. You only get one chance to make a first impression. You think people are stupid. I can spot a clique a mile away. I suppose if I were part of your clique I'd probably act just like you. but I don't join cliques. I'm strictly a lone wolf. You think I'm this troll your so worried about. Well I'm not. I tried to start a thread & hoped my instincts were wrong but nobody replied. so I waited a few days & added a few things some personal in hopes you'd understand me. but nobody replied. & so on. You think NOW you can convince me you're welcoming? you're welcome to try but your opportunity to be what you think you are has come & gone. you saw a new member & because you think all new members must be this troll your so afraid of, you just ignored this new member en masse. If that ain't clique behavior what is?
-
braggin about cha post count again.
-
you talk mighty big with that post number hangin off your hip. spoze you can't see where a guy could get ignored to death, huh? maybe cuz its youse doin the ignorin. ignoring somebody en masse is a death sentence around here. like I said its nothing new to set up cliques on boards. but, uh, how do you get rid of the clique once you got one? and you got one.
-
that is exactly my point. you are worried about who I am based on my # of posts. Well I don't think I will make 1000 with that suspicion following me around.
I was on a board where the # of posts was valued highly. The status of a large # was treasured. It was horrible for newbies. I could not stand it. I went back this year & the post #s were gone & it is a very good board now. I could not believe the difference. You have to judge a person by what they say - the sense they make - a completely different mindset. this joint is sick. maybe you can't see it because you're part of it. those post#s are like a sixgun youse carry around.
-
the post numbers have got to go.
-
notice the cliqsters clear out when the mad robot nodded? What they need to do is abolish the number of posts. it is obvious somebody lived here ten years to reach 1,000 posts. its depressing when a new member has a bunch of cans attached to their leg & everywhere you go you make noise by not having 1,000 posts. a judgment is made who to ignore based on the number of posts & not upon the point the person is trying to make. (prayer) "Oh almighty robot master..... we humbly beseech you to allow us to live here.....please oh great almighty robot master please remove the post numbers..."

Whats the consensus for Metropolis

This guy doesn't know for sure its 18 fps. he is guessing. the BBC slowed the film down until it looked natural. This is a professional tv business operation. The electronic effects are so well done & synchronized with the picture all other versions cannot compare. If you look at the machines, steam & whistles - each has its own sound. They didn't print extra frames. They slowed the movie down using video process. They didn't alter a frame of the movie. the bbc sound people are way ahead of the scene. they did doctor who effects. the reason its not for sale is a mystery because it should be. the British have a great work ethic. If it is worth doing, it is worth doing well. Look at how the Brownlow/photoplay/channel four music is compared to others. they are the best.
