Just saw the new "Robin Hood"...

the gladiator with bows and arrows... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz -
there are dozens of movies not being shown for this reason. these blacklisted people were hard workers who created hundreds of great entertainment movies. they were educated in history and the arts in some cases the cream of the crop of hollywood. it was a tremendous blow the politicians dealt that disrupted the hollywood pattern of operations. each studio made 52 movies a year & the scripts required cooperation among writers to accomplish so many. Personally I don;t believe there was communist influence. My thinking is more the way of keeping repugs out so the country could recover from the stock market crash. same as now Who crashed the stock market? repugs. If you look at a movie like "The roaring 20's" you'll see the classic pattern: Cagney the democrat & Bogie he repug. the whole operation was to wreck the union plans of the working masses.

thank you all for responding even those who attempted to discredit me. "China's Little devils" was gone never to be seen for 40 years. all because of a name in the credits. Since TCM has chosen to sell it rather than show it gives credence to my original observation. It is being held back from tv because of the name Samuel Ornitz.
-
this stuff is so well known ... last time I heard the entire Monogram collection is owned by wb. there should be no need to buy a booleg off amazon. you do the math. there is one mistake. the dems held power for 20 years 1932-52. other than that everything I said is true.
-
I'm not trying to be a crybaby. you all have movies you like & want TCM to show. so do I. Let me explain. take a movie like: "Among the Living" it is very rare but there is no good reason it should be except the writing credit has a name Lester Cole on it. When I was a kid they showed this movie alot Monogram : "china's little devils"...........a great movie ......but when it became known a name was in the credits, it disappeared - you could not even get a bootleg. its on amazon for $70! how it all began: in 1930 the stock market crash was a wake up call to repug rule similar to 911. hollywood was at war within itself to organize the crafts in unions. the big job was to keep repugs out of power & the movies helped by portraying villains as repugs & heroes as dems. kept repugs out for 30 years. the blacklist was revenge. old hollywood died around 1955 but was seriously in decline from 1948. oh they show some but considering how the blacklist killed hollywood, you'd never guess in a million years based on tcm's schedule. in the TCM fantasy world it never happened. Hollywood died of natural causes.
-
& TCM is a proud supporter of the blacklist. So as not to "Offend" its hollywood connections TCM chooses not to show blacklist movies. I could go into detail exactly what is happening but you people are movie knowledgable - you know what the scene is... After the blacklist was put into effect, the studio system went into immediate decline until the mid 60's when it completely fell apart. what is a blacklist movie? one that has blacklisted names in the credits the crime that blacklistees were accused of? being premature anti-fascists! in other words being anti nazi before it was fashionable. I heard the Academy of Motion Pictures was going to replace all the credits in all the movies by giving credit to blacklisted persons instead of pseudonyms. Fat Chance. Did anybody on this board hear of this? Edited by: Big_Bopper on May 24, 2010 4:35 PM

Die freudlose GasseEdition Filmmuseum 48 Die freudlose Gasse (The Joyless Street) is not only one of the most important films of the Weimar Republic, it is also one of the most spectacular censorship cases of the era. The story from the inflationary period in Vienna in the years immediately after World War I was considered too much of a provocation: nouveau riches currency and stock market speculators who wallow in Babylonian luxury, homeless and unemployed Lumpenproletariat living in barns, women who sell their souls for a bit of fresh meat at the butcher's, sexual ****, bordellos and murders. This unique 2-disc DVD set offers the improved most complete restored version of the film as well as a lot of additional material including an excellent documentary about the life and work of G.W. Pabst. Perraudin - Written by: Martin Koerber, Wolfgang Jacobsen - Photographed by: Ren? Perraudin - With: Jan-Christopher Horak, Klaus Volkmer, Gerhard Ullmann, Nicola Mazzanti, Gian Luca Farinelli Produced by: Eikon-Film, Berlin / ZDF/arte, Mainz Premiere: February 22, 1997 (Berlin Film Festival) About Die freudlose Gasse Die freudlose Gasse (The Joyless Street), directed Georg Wilhelm Pabst from a script by Willy Haas, based on a novel by Hugo Bettauer, is not only one of the most important films of the Weimar Republic, it is also one of the most spectacular censorship cases of the era. While the film made its director famous, the state institutions of control guaranteed that no one would ever see the film in its original form. The film was considered too much of a provocation. Its story from the inflationary period in Vienna in the years immediately after World War I offered enough dynamite for several muckraking novels: nouveau riches currency and stock market speculators who wallow in Babylonian luxury, homeless and unemployed Lumpenproletariat living in barns, women who sell their souls for a bit of fresh meat at the butcher's, arrogant but impoverished former bureaucrats unaware of their social slide, young social climbers willing to prostitute themselves with high society women, sexual **** and bordellos, murder out of jealousy, murder out of despair, and, finally, a revolution in the streets. Contemporary film critics, as well as film historians have always recognized The Joyless Street as a seminal film, a film on the border between German Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit (new realism). Two quotes from contemporary reviews may illustrate the point: the Berliner Tageblatt wrote: "In terms of its acting, this is a beautiful film with great direction and wonderful actors." In fact, the film starred Asta Nielsen, Werner Kraus, Hertha von Walter, and a young Greta Garbo who would go on to a stellar career in Hollywood. In the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, Otto Friedrich wrote: "He (Pabst) achieves his goal in great style, does not tread on well-worn paths, presents new ideas which are uniquely his own, and with this achievement gives us a new hope. He captures the atmosphere of an idea, keeps redrawing it on the surface in ever more intensive images, in contrasts of action that make an ever stronger impression. He illustrates the down-trodden souls of the era and the manic lust for pleasure of its people who are trying to do nothing more than escape for a few minutes from the terrible truth of the present." Not only was the film cut for political and moral reasons in every country where it was publicly shown, it was also reedited in order to close the huge gaps created by censorship cuts. Thus, in almost every country totally different narratives of The Joyless Street emerged. According to Mark Sorkin, Pabst's editor, he and Pabst had made the first cuts the night before the premiere, because the theatre owner insisted the film be shortened. While the first version of The Joyless Street still had a length of 3738 meters (only four meters were initially cut by the censorship board on 25 May 1925), the film was back in court on 29 March 1926, because the police had issued a decree calling for a total ban on the film, due to its "lewd" and " seditious" tendencies. Now only 3477 meters remained of the film. None of the later surviving versions ever came close to this length. Neither a German version, nor the original German censorship cards are known to exist. Everyone who has seen the new reconstruction of The Joyless Street agrees that it is a vast improvement over all previously existing versions. Yet it remains only a subjective attempt at a reconstruction. While it is true that the reconstruction team tried to base every one of it decisions on documentary evidence, it must also be admitted that without a surviving original German version, we will never know what the film really looked like. Given the incredible complexity of the narrative, involving at least six different subplots, and the fact that the film is still missing at least 700 meters, this version must be characterized as at attempt at a reconstruction. Jan-Christopher Horak Blind Husbands (Die Rache der Berge)Edition Filmmuseum 03 Erich von Stroheim's directorial debut Blind Husbands is considered a masterpiece of American silent cinema. Set in the alpine scenery of South Tyrol it still baffles its audiences through its precise visual language and its moral ambiguity. This edition presents the film in its gorgeous tinted Austrian release version, Die Rache der Berge (Blinde Ehem?nner) / The Revenge of the Mountains (Blind Husbands), featuring German language intertitles. This print of the film is the longest and oldest version available today. Extras include additional materials from the Austrian Film Museum's Stroheim collection as well as a ROM section with materials on Stroheim and the film. The film Blind Husbands / Die Rache der Berge (Blinde Ehem?nner) - USA 1919 - Directed and wrotten by: Erich von Stroheim, based on his story "The Pinnacle" - Cinematography by: Ben F. Reynolds - Cast: Sam de Grasse, Francelia Billington, Erich von Stroheim, Fay Holderness, Richard Cummings - Produced by: Universal-Jewel Production de Luxe - Premi?re: October 21, 1919 About the film Two differences between this Austrian version and the generally available American version are immediately obvious: they differ both in their length and in the language of the intertitles. The American version is only 1,883 metres long - at 18 frames per second a difference of some 7 minutes to the Austrian version with 2,045 metres. Whereas we originally presumed only a negligible difference, resulting from the varying length of the intertitles, a direct comparison has nevertheless shown that the Austrian version differs from the American version both in the montage and in the duration of individual scenes. Yet how could it happen that the later regional distribution of a canonical US silent film was longer than the "original version"? The prevalent American version of Blind Husbands does not correspond to the version shown at the premiere of 1919. This little-known fact was already published by Richard Koszarski in 1983. The film was re-released by Universal Pictures in 1924, in a version that was 1,365 feet (416 metres) shorter. At 18 frames per second, this amounts to a time difference of 20 minutes! "Titles were altered, snippets of action removed and at least one major scene taken out entirely, where von Steuben and Margaret visit a small local chapel." (Koszarski) From the present state of research we can assume that all the known American copies of the film derive from this shortened re-release version, a copy of which Universal donated to the Museum of Modern Art in 1941. According to Koszarski the original negative of the film was destroyed sometime between 1956 and 1961 and has therefore been irretrievably lost. This information casts an interesting light on the Austrian version, which can be dated to the period between the summer of 1921 and the winter of 1922. Furthermore, the copy is some 200 metres longer than the US version of 1924. If one follows the details given by Richard Koszarski and Arthur Lennig, this means that, as far as both its date and its length are concerned, the Austrian version lies almost exactly in the middle between the (lost) version shown at the premiere and the re-released one.A large part of the additional length of the film can be traced to cuts that were made to the 1924 version in almost every shot. Koszarski describes how the beginning and the end of scenes were trimmed, in order to "speed up" the film. However, more exciting was the discovery that the Austrian version contains shots that are missing in the American one - shots/countershots, intertitles - and furthermore shows differences in its montage (i.e. the placing of the individual shots within a sequence). All this indicates that Die Rache der Berge constitutes the oldest and most completely preserved material of the film. Paolo Caneppele / Michael Loebenstein

I have just signed up today. even tho tcm may not be as great as it could be, it is the only old movie channel. why is that? its because the old movies have meaning if you are slick enough to decipher it. unlike todays movies which mean nothing.

It'd be nice in a perfect world if companies like Kino who sell "restored" or "authorized" versions of movies which then turn out to be not quite restored or authorized would take these items back & offer new versions as an exchange when real restored or authorized versions become available. If you really understand what I'm getting at, then this activity would more or less show responsibility towards the purchasers of such items by the company rather than the alternate attitude "oh well it was the best at that time"... which gives way to people stealing these items by downloading or buying bootlegs etc. I am wondering if Kino decides to sell the new "metropolis" if they would accept returns of their previous "restored" version. Please bear with me cuz I'm new on this board.

although I seen some of em, it is worth looking into. thanks for the tip.

I already apologized in advance. nobody watches more old movies or owns more old movies than me. I have every right to be on this board in fact its my duty to be here. if only Capra would have edited "wondeful life" it could have been ok if a cheap sad imitation of citizen kane & magnificent ambersons. if Capra would have removed the phony sappy ending & angel baloney & just let jimmy stewart die - the movie would be true to itself. there could be a few wrap up scenes with that crummy main street duhmerica as it really is: nobody giving a damn about anybody especially jimmy who they never even rated as a person. just another loser who couldn't cut the mustard. I could edit this movie myself - maybe I'll do that - remove all the overabundence of forced hollywood sentiment & phony patriotics. yes we suck as individuals, families as a collective society duhmerica is the worst culture on the planet. much as we try n pretend with every drug we can consume to try n convince the world to love us - the human filth comes roaring thru the haze. they can see it very clearly. I hear xmas songs I feel nothing. the xtian right destroyed our culture like a parasite from within. as only they can.

as a filmmaker Capra sucks. its a wonderful life is a bad awful movie. capra puts too much unnecessary crap in his pix. I like Lost Horizon but it has much crap in it. but at least it had a point. wonderful life is so insultingly stupid & overlong - look at the beginning with the stars & angels - total rubbish. you might have a decent 100 min. pic instead you got an old fashioned insult masquerading as something "important" ... if I offended anybody I'm sorry. I hate these cute type andy hardy duhmerica pix. wyler & demille also suck equally. its not just capra - its hollywood that sucks. boy meets girl. girl destroys boy's life. girl walks away. nobody loves anybody. trust me. a human being is not worth loving. nobody cares about anybody but themselves. even nurses. that goes double for americans - the most selfish people that crawled out of slime.

Nasa knew I was paranoid when they planned the fake landings. They said: "nobody'll believe him - he thinks there's a clique!"... having a 500 mile limit puts a damper on your "explorations". you can picture the occupants of the space shuttle singing: "99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer ...if one of the bottles should happen to fall, 98 bottles of beer on the wall..." my job on this board is to present enough reality to mind boggle the clique into brain overload. here is a fact even the most delusional dreamer can understand which will blow the sawdust out cho ears: NeverAStraightAnswer nasa never landed a single unmanned flight on the moon before landing 5 consecutive manned flights & returning! piece o cheesecake! nasa never even attempted to land an unmanned flight on the moon. thank your lucky stars

I never said I "thought" it was a hoax. It so obviously is that thinking is not required. My ex wife is as dumb & gullible as it gets. But even she knew it was faked. When I asked her, she quickly told me all the proof you need. "we have not gone back!" If man had gone to the moon they'd be all over that place - running shuttles etc. it could not be done & still cannot be done. there is no need to debate or be insulting. due to radiation man cannot go in to space further than 500 miles. no offense to those who think otherwise but it is a fact. there are radiation belts out there surrounding earth. if a human goes thru them they die. all manned space shuttle missions are less than 500 miles. sorry to disappoint you.

the whole trip depends on how much you know already & how much you need them to tell you. its loaded with lies & basically you can sum it up as a massive propaganda project. the truth about mgm is very sordid, nasty & horrible as the facts add up. a very bad studio operation in which all pics had to be screened & reshot reducing all "artists" to puppets. the actors were placed under contracts they had to sign or face blacklisting. this caused them to drink heavily. I have seen it & it sucks. nothing like the truth. for instance, there is no mention of "joyless street" - a great masterpiece which had greta garbo before mgm ruined her career. nobody saw the restored version before the docu was made........on & on. you hear nothing about how hated louis b mayer was. - the most hated person in the history of show biz. that is the reason for the propaganda project. why was he hated? they won't tell you but I don't mind. mayer was hell bent on keeping the writers non unionized. he created the Academy of motion pics as a company union. al mgm writers had to be non unionized. as the writers got more & more unionized, mayer finally brought in the feds to bust the union in 1947 & the blacklist was instituted.......... what about michael balcon? if you wait for the docu to tell you fahgedaboudit.... it is another mayer horror story. Balcon was hired in the late 30's to run mgm british so they could make pix in england with authentic english flavor as opposed to the phony hollywood sets. Balcon was ideally suited to the job as he was established as the most brilliant movie person in england. he was invited to an mgm party in which he saw with his own eyes how horrible a studio could be. then mayer visited england..... in the very first mgm british movie mayer wanted to disrupt the casting & impose his will by casting a music hall broad he picked up on a drunken night out. Balcon had Vivien Leigh already cast & an argument took place in which Balcon told Mayer "Dont be a fool".... balcon was reduced to office boy & an american was placed in charge. lets face it Mayer was so horrible to everybody that the hate built up was unbelievable. how bad can one person be? you would need another 6 hour docu to tell the truth bcuz there is no truth in the mgm one on tcm. none it sucked all the long way. one fat lie after another.
-
why don't you just watch your tape? as for the mgm movies, they are generally thought of as the worst boring pretentious of all the studios due to the obligatory dumbing down to the level of louis b mayers "intelligence" which consisted of counting money & ratting out innocent people to his republican committees. if you could stand to watch this drivel even once you got one on me. I will say there is one mgm pic I like "Village of the Damned" but they were not content to make a classic but had to create a horrible sequel which negates everyhing in the original! typical. I like MGMs "Blowup" except that I have never actually seen it since MGM decides to censor it. I "heard" it was longer than 111 min....... are they waiting for everybody who was alive when it was made to die? typical. vanessa redgrave walked around with her top off &...&...& &&&&&&&&&&?????????????????????? why is that allowed in an mgm movie?

Jerry Lewis to be honored with the Jean Hersholt Award
Big_Bopper replied to lzcutter's topic in General Discussions
aint he the dude in "greed"...... well then the shoe fits cuz Jerry been paddin his pockets with his phony disease trip. Muscular Distrophy got Jerry Lewis for a friend u dont need an enemy. ... Jerry Lewis: the worst actor pound for pound in the history of show biz & a rotten person to boot.
