  1. Brack I think your suggestion that Barbara Stanwyck is a "typical American woman" is a bit problematic. I have read from more than one source that she was one of those "Women who wear sensible shoes" (and flannel shirts). If she was typical, that would explain why so many women have "headaches" at 11:31 the moment the news is over.
  2. Brack, what do you mean "Fashion challenged"? I STILL wear my lime-green leisure suit and Earth Shoes... and believe me, I make an indellable impression! Speaking on indellable impressions, ever notice how no karaoke session is complete until a large, angry, drunk woman belts out Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive"?
  3. gwtwbooklover... count your blessings. At least Antar didn't accuse you of being rogan! I know what you mean about hidding your true identity though. I have a deadly fear that the ladies will find out that I am actually Richard Gere and that they will insist I re-enact with them certain scenes from "American Gigilo" with them. Anyway, greetings and hallucinations!
  4. Dear gwtwbooklover. Sorry you are wrong! The Blob did NOT have a mustache! He DID have neato sideburns though.....
  5. Brack I don't know why Frank had Sammy banned, but it may have been the time Sammy said some mildly negative things about him in the press. He made Sammy CRAWL to get back in his good graces. Will check up and see if this was the instance.
  6. Actually, Roger Thornhill was just asking the Professor if the "get out of jail free" card could be sold to another player.
  7. To expand on FM Willy's point, in all Roman epics the patricians are played by Brits with THAT accent and plebians and slaves are played by Americans... as Moira has pointed out re: Tony Curtis ("Lung Lung ago".)
  8. Mary Lou, I hold no brief for Lawford, but I brought this up to show how Sinatra used these movies as a club to keep the rest of the Rat Pack in line. I'm also aware that Bogie started the "Holmby Hills Rat Pack" and that Sinatra was a member and Lauren Bacall was the "Den Mother". Bogie never tried to dominate HIS Pack the way Sinatra did. Fortunately, I am able to completely seperate the man from his foibles and absoutely love his music and his movies. "The Joker is Wild" and "From Here to Eternity are among my favorite movies, mostly because of "Ol' Blue Eyes' " performances.
  9. Brack, I too feel that he was a great artist. But, here's a little more insight into Sinatra the man. One night when The "Chairman of the Board" didn't get his own way (forcing a group of people to drive down to Palm Springs)he destroyed his arranger's(Was it Nelson Riddle?) most prized possesion: an irreplaceable portrait done by Norman Rockwell of the arranger. Frank tore it to pieces and told him if he tried to fix it he would have him beaten up. Later Frank appologized and gave him a gift. When asked why he tolerated this abuse, he stated that Sinatra was a great talent and did his arragements perfectly. "Basically, I'm a **** for my art." he said.
  10. OF COURSE you mean to correct me! But I think you are right. It was Flix : Movies for "The Explosive Generation." BTW you KNOW that Shatner is the "cool teacher" because he drives a 1950 MG and wears a "snazzy" hat.
  11. OK ML, just don't spend too much. Note : I only saw the last 1/2 hour & nowhere did I say this movie was "good"
  12. Saw the last half hour of this flick on Sundance yesterday. Apparently a teacher (William Shatner) tries to play Mary Worth with his classe's sexual questions. The mean old uncaring administration and parents want to fire Shatner, but the kids support him by staging a protest (complete with slogan shouting over a PA system as well as "wild" jazz music. After the police order them to get into the school building, they decide to stage a "mute-in" by refusing to talk. It was as though the "Cone of Silence" had dropped on them, appropriate since Edward Platt played the principal. The film was interesting for several reasons: It was filmed in 1960:years before Berkley; but could have been the blueprint. Also had an early appearance by Beau Bridges as well as a LATE one by Patty McCormick of "Bad Seed" fame. It also featured a typical over-the-top Shatner performance, well worth a snicker.
  13. I can't enjoy any Rat pack film knowing the way Sinatra used such projects to keep Sammy , Lawford, and Bishop in line. It was either kiss his butt or they didn't get a part in the movie. Notice that "Sergeants 3" was Lawford's last Pack film after he delivered the message from the Kennedys that JFK would make Bing Crosby's house his "Western White House" while staying in Palm Springs. It wasn't Peter's fault- it was just decided that JFK and Sinatra were too volatile a combo... not to mention the fact that some of Frank's less savory friends might try to crash. While Sinatra was a truly remarkable talent, as a human being he could behave dispicably.
  14. I guess that TCM doesn't have the rights to "The Pride and the Passion" the movie where Cary and Sophia fell in love. I haven't seen it since I was a kid. I have read since that the reason Frank Sinatra's Spanish accent in the film was so funky is that he hired an Argentine dialogue coach. Thus, in the film he says "Jes" instead of yes, which apparently is not the way Spaniards speak English.
  15. I think that this offer was made to HKG in order that she "appreciate" Harold Lloyd, not to the entire WORLD. that being said, :HKG you WILL watch the Three Stooges' "Malice in the Palace" and you WILL enjoy it!
  16. FINALLY! Someone who "greatly appreciates all hunches". Best Regards, Quasimodo.
  17. "Off the record, on the Q.T. and very...hush,hush." "La.C."
  18. 10 copies of "Dig That Uranium" with Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall.
  19. And also from "Pillow Talk" as a wee rememberance of the late Tony Randall: "As many times as I'll be married, I'll never understand women!" Viya con dios, Tony.
  20. My favorite "Pirate" movie is "Angels in the Outfield". Paul Douglas is SUPERB as the manager of the Pittsburg Pirates.
  21. I think Michael Medved would do an excellent job. He's passionate, knowledgable, and knows that the red light on the camera means THAT'S the one that's ON. Some may object to a critic doing the intros, but wouldn't it be nice to see someone that wouldn't pretend that EVERY older film was the second coming of GWTW? I wouldn't trade Bob Osborn for anyone, but I would enjoy seeing the contrast between his intro of a marginal film and MM's :)I don't dislike Ben or Sydney; it's just that I would rather see someone show strong feeling about a movie they are presenting.
  22. To Ben Mankiewitz: Hi, I'm Bill Wright Sr. from the Colombia School of Broadcasting. If you have a normal speaking voice and average intelligence you too can have a career in the exciting field of broadcasting. The Colombia School of Broadcasting is not affiliated with CBS incorporated. Approved for veteran's education.
  23. Troy IS long...but the story is rich and detailed, as is the source material. Remember, the Illiad tells about only ONE incident in the Trojan War. Braken I agree with you about Brad Armpitt...in a completely NON-gay way...not that there's anything WRONG with that
