  1. Troy IS long...but the story is rich and detailed, as is the source material. Remember, the Illiad tells about only ONE incident in the Trojan War. Braken I agree with you about Brad Armpitt...in a completely NON-gay way...not that there's anything WRONG with that

    Troy

Saw "Troy" sunday and LOVED it. While they take a few liberties with some of the storylines, the over-all effect I thought was magnificent. The battle scenes were great but the real eye-opening performance was Brad Pitt as Achilles. He is VERY convincing as history's greatest warrior (Achilles was my "Batman" while growing up). His fight scenes rival anything Doug Fairbanks or Errol Fylnn ever did. In addition the movie manages to tell the story of Troy convincingly and entertainingly.
  3. Moira re: "Planet of the Apes": I think that after John Glenn came back from his space shuttle trip a coupla years back, I think that the ground crew and mission control personnel should all have been wearing ape masks.
  4. Tuesday nite I saw 2 classics that I had never seen previously: "The Good Earth" and "An American in Paris." Both were great but unfortunately the changes from the novel in the later part of "Earth" weakened the theme of "the earth abides." And O-Lan was NOT "the good earth." However "AAIP" was a revelation. I LOVED the performances by Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, Oscar Levant, and Nina Foch. Such likeable characters! Kelly's dance numbers were great as always. I HATE to see ballet though. I can't stop thinking how PAINFUL it must be. And of course the Gershwin tunes. "Nuff said"
  5. From "12 Angry Men": " I feel sorry for you. What it must feel like to want to pull the switch! Ever since we got in here you've been acting like a self-appointed public avenger...You're a sadist!!!"
  6. Brak, I know exactly what you mean about never watching someone eat or drink something disgusting. that's why I never look in the window as I pass Denny's!
  7. I'm glad you enjoy my fossiltude, ML
  8. He was also outstanding in "Stephen King's Cat's Eye" as the as Mr Genatti, the guy who ran "Quitters Inc" and turned James Wood's life into a living "heck".
  9. Uggh. This cry for Bollywood movies reminds me of guys like George Jessel who would appear on "The Mike Douglas Show" or "Merv" and wistfully hope that they would "bring back Vaudville." these folks appear to be gone now, but what they failed to understand was that Vaudville was replaced by "ENTERTAINMENT". Any V.ville performer who had any talent easily made the transition to movies or radio. Vaudville was merely the vehicle for both corn and gold. The reason there are few "Bollywood" films on cable is the lack of demand for them. The only place I have seen them outside of the Bollywood "Festival" was on foreign language channels that split broadcast time btwn Indian & Korean programing. I hope someone doesn't make a plea for Kabuki theatre next. It's worse than watching GOLF!!!
  10. The only scene I liked from "So I Married an Axe Murderer": Mike Myers as a crabby Scotsman complaining that his son's immense skull blocked his view of the TV. "HEAD!!! Down in front! That boy's got an ENORMOUS cranium. Size of Sputnik!" All devlivered in his patented Fat **** accent.
  11. After the movie came out, teen-aged girls used to torment dry cleaners by flinging open the front door and screaming "No More wire hangers!!!!....EVER!!!!" My favorite line from the film: " Don't f*** with me fellas! This ain't my first time at the rodeo."
  12. It's true according to "Mommy Dearest".
  13. As soon as a candle is lit the entire room is drenched in light. Also, torches are easily lit: a piece of cloth wrapped around a thick limb catches fire instantly, and burns brightly for however long the hero needs it to.
  14. I really despise critics who won't recuse themselves from reviewing film genres they loathe. I'll never forget Rex Reed's comment after his review partner said of "Predator" "This film, combining the war and horror genres will really turn on the faithful." Rex's comment? "Well 'The faithful' eat DUMB for breakfast!" He then proceeded to tear the film to shreds. But the point IS: it is a wonderful film for lovers of horror AND action adventure. I never met anyone who likes these film types who disliked "Predator". But REX did. Why couldn't he just be honest and say that he doesn't care for a certain type of movie. That would be as bad as myself, a person who can't STAND martial arts films, paning "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."
  15. I meant to post this much earlier but it slipped my mind. A coupla weeks ago TCM had Royal Dano movies on succesive nights in "All Mine to Give" and as Peter in "King of Kings." The guy always sorta reminded me of Fess Parker after about 6 years on a crack pipe.Rare treat for the ladies as Royal bared his manly physique in KofK. His Arms from biceps to hands resembled pipe cleaners. Royal may be best remembered as the highly agitated "prophet" Elijah who fortells the fate of the Pequod to Ishmael in " Moby Dick".
  16. Yeah Coogan was a cute kid but for me he will always be "Uncle Fester".
  17. I'm with you Brak. Although I like the movie, there were tons of things that disturbed me about it. For one thing, the Diane Baker character obviously wants Sean and he can't or won't see it. She's much more appealing than the frigid, klepto. But Hitch and his blondes....Also did you catch the matte painting at the end of Marnie's ma's street in Baltimore with the big ship. Looks more fake than the lagoon on Gilligan's Island.
  18. Moira, you're right on the mark (as always) with your comment about the Warner sound tracks. Bette Davis told more than one director: " I want you to remember that it's me and not Max Steiner coming down these stairs!"
  19. I love it when something very funny is going on in the background of a scene. Like the sorority girls on the float in "Animal House" all wearing the same pink suit & pill box hat that Jackie Kennedy wore in Dallas,or when Robert Hayes gets off the truck in "AirplaneII" we see several seed pods from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".Any others?
  20. I love cars in the movies. Some of my faves are Paul Newman's pink '58 Caddy convertible from "Hud", "Christine" the jealous '58 Plymouth Fury, and that aristocrat of automobiles;the '64 Aston Martin DB V from "Goldfinger".
  21. I think Mr Osborne has been dipping into the crank.
  22. Wow was this EXCELLENT. I just happened to catch it. I wasn't aware that it even existed but they covered everyone from the directors, to the stars (even refering to Joan Crawford as Lucille Lesuere)to the barbers and hairdressers to the publicity dept. AWESOME!!!
  23. Hey Brak what was even SICKER was that compared to Scott Glenn's "Wes Hightower", Bud treated her WELL. I guess Sissy is just one of those gals who ends up down at the shelter missing teeth and sporting black eyes.
  24. Ml even though I am a good canoer? canoeist? ( I have done white water on the upper Delaware for 50 mile plus trips,) and love to fish, and was raised on clamming and crabbing as well, I just don't like seafood. But I wish I did 'cause people seem to LOVE it so. Hope ya feel better SOON! George
  25. Margo Channing headed up the stairs as she tosses out: "Hang on...it's going to be a bumpy nite!" and later whenEve, Bill, Margo,Addison, etc sit on the same stairs and dicuss the theatre as Max Fabian gets a drink for Marilyn.
