  1. With all the talk about idiots who insist on re-making classic treasures, I thought about the converse position. What movie from a terrific book that was ruined by some "genius" who paid big money for a best-seller and proceeded to "improve" it by changing everything about it except for the names of the characters would you like to see re-made? This was successfully in the case of "Alive" about the Andes survivors almost 20 years after the exploitation ripoff "Survive" was rushed out killing the major studio production of the story. My own choice is a re-make of "The Choirboys" a Joesph Wambaugh novel that was ruined in the 80's. What movie would you like to see given another chance? However the odds against this are high...Hollywood only wants to redo finacially successful films.

  2. Speaking of film preservation, this week-end on WYBE (a PBS affiliate) I saw the worst copy of a classic film EVER! It was "D.O.A." with Edmund O'Brien. It was so faded that sometimes in medium distance shots, the entire facial features of the actors disappeared. All you could see was the outline of the face framed in a hairdo. In the exterior scenes, some of the letters had vanished off signs. Thank goodness better copies exist.

  3. Brack I know you didn't say ol' Vin was sexy, but he IS considered a sex symbol by tons of women and I was just wondering what women see in certain stars. Another guy I can't see women getting their panties in a bunch over is Mickey Rourke....unless maybe they saw him right after his yearly bath....:o

  4. Y'all can blame this post on Bracken for bringing up Vin Diesel in another thread. :) Like many men, I can't tell why certain guys appeal to women. (Remember when women thought that Woody Allen was CUTE!! :o) When it's obvious I can tell that a guy is handsome (Robert Redford, tom Cruise, Brad Armpit) but when a guy like Vin Diesel is a sex symbol, I am utterly clueless. I mean, to me, the guy looks like "Ready Kilowatt" the Con Edison mascot whose head is a light bulb. And Gerard Depardue? A big dorky guy who looks like Jeff Daniels after a steroid experement went horribly wrong!! Puh- LEEZE! Maybe you ladies can explain it but I DOUBT it. I guess it's like trying to explain to women why certain guys love Anna Nicole Smith. Ooops i'm sorry, it's her personality.... yeah, that's the ticket, her personality.

  5. Finally I have seen the "Wiz" uncut & uninterupted. It FLIES by. What great pacing it has! (Which is lost due to commercials). I even had fun pointing out each spot in the movie where the commercials are inserted. I also noticed that the film has a martial subtext. The Muchkins have an army armed with rifles AND big chrome bayonets! (Guess the witch is bulletproof). I had noticed this before but what I noticed for the FIRST time is that the Emerald City ALSO has an army. Black helmets & spears seen as the the Wiz takes off in his baLloon.Of course the witches guards also have spears. (Oreeeo! yooooh ho!)Didja notice that the scarecrow carrys a REVOLVER when they go to rescue Dorothy? For the first time I noticed the reference to the Jitterbug scene which was cut. The witch tells her flying monkey chief, "Those insects will take some of the fight out of them!" The scene was deleted but they left the line in. See what you can notice when your attention isn't interupted? Thank you TCM!!!

  6. Leo, you're missing my point. The fact that is obviously FAKE is my problem with these films, not "Ice Station Zebra " specifically. It's sorta like being able to see the zipper running up the back of the monster suit in a horror film. It makes it that much harder to suspend disbelife. Yes Pete I have noticed the careless way people "bundle up" in supposedly frigid climates, and it just adds to the overall lack of autheticity. That's why it's so impressive when you see the breath in such films as "The Thing", even though I KNOW it was shot on an interior set. Attention to small details can add to the enjoyment of any film.

  7. A coupla months ago I read in a tabloid how ol' Leo's third wife belonged to some goofy cult. She had even hung some silly "all seeing eye" on the wall over the bed. During one of their numerous fights, Leo punched the eye, destroying it. Made me laugh 'til the tears ran down my face. Even now typing this, it's happening again! Sorry.

  8. Ml's comment about the orange filter in "Indian Summer" made me recall how much I HATE scenes filmed "day for night." That hiddeous blue/gray filter! Car headlights only look like they're lit when they point directly at the camera, every thing has a heavy shadow (like daytime) and you have to really concentrate to see a campfire. I also hate to see or rather NOT see people's breath in scenes that are supposed to be set in frigid locations. All I can think about is that the scene is filmed on an indoor set, the snow is fake, and how uncomfortably hot the cast must be in their parkas. Ruins "Ice Station Zebra" for me every time :)

  9. Stoney, it's just a goof. BTW do you recall that Jack Lord was the first Felix Leiter, James Bond's C.I.A. counterpart("Dr. No")? I agree, it's hard to believe he was an "alternate lifestyler." Perhaps his permanantly Brylcremed hair, which he used to deflect bullets on "5-O", was to blame.

  10. As soon as I saw this topic I IMMEDIATELY thought of "N By NW " too. I'll add "BREAKHEART PASS" as another favorite train film. My personal experience on trains has been that the rail personel are particularly unpleasent and rude. I have learned not to ever speak to the employees on the train to Atlantic City wether to ask a question or to engage in light conversation. 2 years ago I took the train from Philadelphia to Charlston, and while I enjoyed the train ride, I found the same atitude among the staff. In general they act as if any passenger is a nuisance and if the train could just ride empty it would be a great improvement. On the way to Charleston I had a conductor walk up to me and say: "Time. TIME. TIME! TIME!! TIME!!! in ever increasing volume and irritation. Apparently we wanted to know what time it was because when I told him he turned away immediately without a word of acknowledgement or thanks. I am not making this up!

  11. "It's only a movie!?" Just WHAT is it we're discussing on these boards? The point of my thread is to air opininons on the ideas presented in this particular movie. I guarantee that people's concepts about the nature of possible alien civilzations were influenced by this film. But beyond that, we live in an age where the use of power to influence outcomes is VERY much at the center of the world's political debate. If we feel that Klaatu's civilization is justified in destroying an entire intelligent race when there are less drastic options available, then maybe we feel that it's justifiable to use our own nuclear capabilities to wipe out those we fear and distrust.

  12. Mr. Rogan: While FDR did make mistakes dealing with the USSR,the Russians were THERE in great numbers. The only way to remove them would to have been to FORCE them out, and don't forget we STILL had a minor disagreement going on with the Japanese.
