  1. Brack, why would I get mad at someone for expressing an honest opinion? I looked this up as promised. I remembered correctly. Sammy made some comments about Frank in "his town", Chicago, to a reporter. He said, "Just because you have talent doesn't mean you can step on people. Frank occasionally does this." Bad news embarressing Frank in front of the Chicago boys like "Momo" Giancana and Johnny Roselli. This is from Peter Lawford quoted in "His Way" by Kitty Kelly. Frank also reportedly refered to Sammy as "that n----r b-----d". So the part in "Never So Few" that was written so Sammy could be in the film was re-written for Steve MacQueen. Correction: While Nelson Riddle was one of Frank's arrangers, the one who's Norman Rockwell portrait was slashed and destroyed by Frank was Jimmy Van Heusen.

  2. The point is that Babs wasn't singled out by the environmentalists, as her house was one of many photographed and listed. She was singled out by the news media AFTER the story broke. That's the power of fame. Imagine that Brad Pitt is on a plane with 100 eminant scientists. the plane crashes with the loss of all. The headline reads. "BRAD PITT KILLED IN AIR DISASTER/ 100 others lost."

  3. Keith thanks for giving a coupla sources for the info on Stanwyck's sexual preference. Been busy last coupla days. (finals). I didn't remember the sources, but over the years I have read several times that she was gay. I was not making a condemnation of her lifestyle, just kidding around that if she was "typical" that could be a reason that women don't want sex as often as men (as a rule). I can't BELIEVE that this is "news" to so many people who are so knowledgeable about Hollywood's golden age. As far as the privacy issue, it's a given that it is gone when you voluntarily become a celebrity. You can protect your privacy as much as you like, but you really can't cry "foul" when someone finds out something you would rather keep hidden. Celebrities cry : "Look at me!!! Look at me!! Look at me!!!.... Oops! DON't look at me NOW!!!" The case in point being Babs Streisand who believes in freedom of the press and the environment: EXCEPT when an environmental group took photos of the mansions along the Pacific Coast Highway which are threatening the environment and published them. When Babs house was identified and her hypocrasy about the environment exposed, she suddenly thought that these photographers weren't protected by the first ammendmant. (She also tried to then prevent aircraft from flying over her house.)Not everything is a "win/win" and you must make a trade-off: privacy for stardom. Even though celebrities think they are entitled to a free pass. So if you stiff your waitress, J Lo, expect to read about it in print!

  4. "Goodfellas" has a scene with Ray and Lorraine dinning at a tennis club, and one of her neighbors, that they meet there later attempts to rape her...typical tennis player. JUST A JOKE SO STOP POINTING THE BALL GUN IN MY DIRECTION!

  5. I wish someone would film "Homage to Catalonia". This is the story of Erich Blair's (George Orwell) experiences fighting in the Spanish Civil War. The Loyalist government allowed Stalin's agents to purge Orwell's battalion as "Trotskites" and most of these brave men were executed as traitors even thought they had fought no one but the Falangists (Fascists). Orwell was lucky to escape with his life and write "Animal Farm" and "1984" both of which HAVE been filmed. It was this betrayal by the "Common Front" and Stalinist movements which caused him to have such a bleak vision of the future.

  6. Brack I think your suggestion that Barbara Stanwyck is a "typical American woman" is a bit problematic. I have read from more than one source that she was one of those "Women who wear sensible shoes" (and flannel shirts). If she was typical, that would explain why so many women have "headaches" at 11:31 the moment the news is over.

  7. Brack, what do you mean "Fashion challenged"? I STILL wear my lime-green leisure suit and Earth Shoes... and believe me, I make an indellable impression! Speaking on indellable impressions, ever notice how no karaoke session is complete until a large, angry, drunk woman belts out Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive"?

  8. gwtwbooklover... count your blessings. At least Antar didn't accuse you of being rogan! I know what you mean about hidding your true identity though. I have a deadly fear that the ladies will find out that I am actually Richard Gere and that they will insist I re-enact with them certain scenes from "American Gigilo" with them. Anyway, greetings and hallucinations!

  9. Mary Lou, I hold no brief for Lawford, but I brought this up to show how Sinatra used these movies as a club to keep the rest of the Rat Pack in line. I'm also aware that Bogie started the "Holmby Hills Rat Pack" and that Sinatra was a member and Lauren Bacall was the "Den Mother". Bogie never tried to dominate HIS Pack the way Sinatra did. Fortunately, I am able to completely seperate the man from his foibles and absoutely love his music and his movies. "The Joker is Wild" and "From Here to Eternity are among my favorite movies, mostly because of "Ol' Blue Eyes' " performances. :)

  10. Brack, I too feel that he was a great artist. But, here's a little more insight into Sinatra the man. One night when The "Chairman of the Board" didn't get his own way (forcing a group of people to drive down to Palm Springs)he destroyed his arranger's(Was it Nelson Riddle?) most prized possesion: an irreplaceable portrait done by Norman Rockwell of the arranger. Frank tore it to pieces and told him if he tried to fix it he would have him beaten up. Later Frank appologized and gave him a gift. When asked why he tolerated this abuse, he stated that Sinatra was a great talent and did his arragements perfectly. "Basically, I'm a **** for my art." he said.

  11. Saw the last half hour of this flick on Sundance yesterday. Apparently a teacher (William Shatner) tries to play Mary Worth with his classe's sexual questions. The mean old uncaring administration and parents want to fire Shatner, but the kids support him by staging a protest (complete with slogan shouting over a PA system as well as "wild" jazz music. After the police order them to get into the school building, they decide to stage a "mute-in" by refusing to talk. It was as though the "Cone of Silence" had dropped on them, appropriate since Edward Platt played the principal. The film was interesting for several reasons: It was filmed in 1960:years before Berkley; but could have been the blueprint. Also had an early appearance by Beau Bridges as well as a LATE one by Patty McCormick of "Bad Seed" fame. It also featured a typical over-the-top Shatner performance, well worth a snicker.

  12. I can't enjoy any Rat pack film knowing the way Sinatra used such projects to keep Sammy , Lawford, and Bishop in line. It was either kiss his butt or they didn't get a part in the movie. Notice that "Sergeants 3" was Lawford's last Pack film after he delivered the message from the Kennedys that JFK would make Bing Crosby's house his "Western White House" while staying in Palm Springs. It wasn't Peter's fault- it was just decided that JFK and Sinatra were too volatile a combo... not to mention the fact that some of Frank's less savory friends might try to crash. While Sinatra was a truly remarkable talent, as a human being he could behave dispicably.
