CF, how about Tracy & Henry Fonda. While Spence played the educated sophisticate and Fonda the rube, they shared many similarities. Both had trouble "getting the girl." They were both deft at doing light comedy or the most serious of films. They also were among the few actors who worked in starring roles up to their demise and were not relegated to role of "character actor." Heck, they were both kinda like character actors who were somehow given great roles. Both did a lotta films without being romantic leads. Finally both did a lot of films that were conserned about social justice. Spence as Clarance Darrow, the Judge in "Judgement at Nuremberg" and as Macready in "Bad Day at Bad Rock." Henry in "Mr Roberts" , "the Ox-Bow Incident" "12 Angry Men" and as Tom Joad in "The Grapes of Wrath."

A tough choice! I think it is Cooper by a hair, but I may be affected by my re-viewing of "Pride of the Yankees" this past week-end. Also Gable and Errol Flynn both owned nearly identical custom-built Dusenberg convertibles(the ONLY 2). That's gotta be a chracter flaw, right?

Ars, I especially enjoyed "Our Miss Brooks" in "Anatomy of a Murder".

Me either bggalaxy...thanx.

Errr.... make that "in a van, down by the river."
-
Stella... I'm sure that in heaven there is a guy "living down by the river in a van!"

"The man with the power."

As far as Skippy/Asta goes, being the owner of a fox terrier I have to agree guys.
-
I'd have to say "Doodles Weaver". Not half as funny as any ONE of the Ritz Brothers.
-
I was gonna say Dianna but I think she got "Too Much Too Soon."
-
LTL "You remind me of a man." Not really, but I think you'll remember the quote. Lol

Yes Prof, a wonderful job by MacMurray. As Daffy Duck would say, "He's dithpiccable!" Moira, I also am a BIG R.R. fan. Could anyone be more cynical than his character in "Bad Day at Black Rock"?

One of my favorite films. HK girl I agree whole-heartedly about Jon Lovitz. I LOVE it when he tells the cow, "Will you SHUT UP!!!!!???" I know it doesn't look funny in print, but I dare anyone to not break up when they see the scene. He tells KIt, that the salary would be (I forget the amount)$100 aweek. "We only make $40 at the dairy" she says... "Well then, this would be MORE."

Bansi...I agree and add her performances in "Judgement at Nuremberg" "The Blue Angel" and "A Touch of Evil." But I think Garbo was much more sexy.

hmmm tried to post this to the Johhny Guitar thread.

Sterling Hayden: a great actor underutilized. Who can forget his Capt. McClusky in "The Godfather" or General Jack D. Ripper in " Dr. Strangelove" (Flurodation) is a commie plot to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids."
-
FRom "The Odd Couple": "We have green sandwiches and brown sanwiches." Murray: "What are the green sandwiches?" Oscar: "It's either very new cheese or very old meat." Murray: "I'll take a brown sandwich." Oscar : about Felix after he left: "Right now he's out there crying and sulking...and having a wonderful time."

Im gonna answer that age-old question why men don't ask for directions for ya Lady; You must assume that the person you are asking even knows where he is. Had that happen once. Asked idiot in gas station where Madison st was (was forced to because no st. signs). He sent me about 31/2 miles away. Turns out that the gas station he was working in was ON Madison st!!!! Want more? Was in Clinton NJ and asked clerks in store where Round valley Resevoir was. It was on 1 of only 2 streets leading out of town, was 2 miles away and was 10 miles accross and 5 miles wide and these folks hadda have a CONFRERENCE! Nuff SAID!

My favorite cynic is George C. Scott as "Bert Gordon" in "The Hustler".

Moira I'm glad to see that you understood that my comments were made in jest(I carefully added the smiley face for that reason) and didn't take it personally. If life has taught me one thing it's that "always" and "never" are SELDOM accurate.Glad to see a member of the female gender appreciates the Boys. I have know others who also enjoy them but y'all are in the minority I'm afeared.

Would never ask ya about the Stooges, Lady. Women HATE the Stooges. If a Stooge short comes on the TV , the men in the room immediately begin to make the "woo woo woo." sound of Curly...man's favorite Stooge. The women roll their eyes and make snide comments to each other.

Things We Would Never Know Without the Movies
slappy3500 replied to ladymirabelle45's topic in General Discussions
I never noticed the French bread in the grocery bags as much as the frickin' celery. Whenever someone is shipwrecked they always wash up on the shore, prone on the beach yet still alive. It's my understanding that if you lose conciouness while swiming you DROWN! In summer camp movies for some reason the kids at the "rich camp" (there's ALWAYS a rich camp)are always slim, good-looking and MEAN.The inhabitants at the "slob" camp are always the "good guys" I guess being fat, slovenly, horney, and foul-mouthed somehow makes you a better person...Females, remember that if a male says something you don't like ,be SURE to kick him in the crotch-- HARD! This shows how sensitive women are and is always a LAFF-RIOT... no matter how many times it has been done. Remember if Jesus is making a cameo, his face must not be shown...always show the back of the cross, a shadow, the edge of his robe...the dorky teen-aged boy always rejects the hot chick in favor of the shy girl who "really cares about him". And visa versa for the geeky teen-aged girl... who will blossom into a great beauty by the last reel.
