Lighten UP long. This guy practically SCREAMS to be masde fun of. I'll bet he wore a "kick me" sign in High School. No matter WHAT his qualifications, IMO he is not suitable to be a host on TCM. I found his comments on "The Women" to be uninspired and his appearance and manner detract from any cogent points he might make. Just because someone has impecable credentials it does not automatically translate into succestful movie host. Just like I don't want to hear some overly pedantic gasbag who's an expert on education introduce "Goodbye Mr Chips." Besides what are these forums FOR if not to air our views. It's FUN!

Is anyone else deathly sick of tiny sexy women beating up dozens of big men? I see Quentin Tarrentino's latest features that beefy brawler Uma Thurman doing the "Crouching Anorexic/Hidden Bulimic" routine. The media is FLOODED with images of (ALWAYS) hot women who are apparently too violent for the NFL. "La Femme Nikta", "Dark Angel", "Buffy","Charlie's Angels","Tomb Raider" ad infinitum. A few times is a NOVELTY: this glut of female mayhem smacks suspiciously (to me) of masochistic guys who want to be physically humiliated by spandex sluts. IMHO if you want a tough, smart realistic heroine , Ellen Ripley of the "Alien" series is the ideal. Oh, sorry, that requires good writing and acting... I also appologize for the rant but, I REALLY am not interested in seeing the Olsen twins doing "twice the Van Dammage!"

HELLO NED...ned...ed...ed? Hmmm, sure is empty in here. CF did you KILL Ned?

What the heck was that introducing "The Women" last nite? It looked like a gay version of Cosmo Kramer! Style? Well it IS October, I guess he was wearing his Halloween costume. He raved on and on and ON about the fashions in the movie...yeah they were really great-especially the one Roz Russle wore: 3 (?) eyeballs on her blouse and what looked like a flower pot on her head! He mentioned the color segment "the fashion show was like a dream sequence " and the fact that it was an all-female cast....thanks for the insights MR Obvious! What's next? Dennis Rodman introducing "In the Heat of the Night???

I recommend this very funny, yet little-seen film highly. It's best scenes perfectly scewer the pretentious European films of the 60's. Peter Sellers plays "The Fox", a devious criminal. He decides to smuggle gold into Italy and uses the peroduction of a bogus film as a cover. He involves a small village whose residents immediately become film-crazy. He imports a faded actor (Victor Mature) as his Star. VERY funny self-parody. In one scene he has mature and the leading lady see each other and suddenly turn and run toward each other. The he says. "OK now a few of the towns people run accross the square." Immediately several HUNDRED people dash on-screen, completely hiding the embracing couple. He later says "I want running. running." Mature asks , "What are we running from?" ...Um ah Why you're running from YOURSELVES!" After the plot is foiled, the footage that was shot is shown in court as evidence. At one point, A man jumps up. " Iam Luciano Bertolini, the film critic. It's a MASTERPIECE!! I laughed, I cried!! He is, of course taken away. Not a great comedy..a bit uneven but a hoot for film buffs.

James Cagney in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)?
slappy3500 replied to marshald25's topic in Information, Please!
Check out one of the long shots of the Bounty. He's in the crow's nest. If you listen to the sound track very carefully you'll hear;"Top o'the ship,Ma!" -
There were TWO blondes : both annoying. Don't forget "Barbra". LOL
-
Yeah Ned. Woody was also memorable in "Spartacus". For a WHOLE BUNCH of good performances, check out "A Soldier's Story" starring Howard Rollins Jr. Robert Townsend, Denzell, and a tor-de-force by Adolpho Caesar. I think that's how his name is spelled...

Stlgal...I LOVE the irony of the fact that although he was pushy and obnoxius, Harry Cooper was RIGHT! If they had gone down into the basement like he wanted them to, they'd have all survived. Kinda neat how they make the audience identify with Ben who was dead wrong and got EVERYONE killed.
-
Hope you enjoy it Joe , but as I said , they never intended to make an actual horror film so no "Ed Wood" type laffs. All they intended was a quick buck. What is annoying about this is their choice of this piece of filth for "Monsterfest" when there are so many GOOD horror films that are rarely seen: the 1960 version of "The Haunting" and "Dawn of the Dead" come to mind. For some reason the original "Night of the Living Dead" (which is great IMO) as well as the dreadful re-make and the mediocre "Day of the Dead" are seen quite often. "Dawn" which is superior to three quarters of the junk you see at Halloween is almost NEVER shown anywhere.
-
A new low! Looks like AMC is going to show "Motel Hell" as part of their yearly "Monsterfest". This movie is truely wretched and awful. It's not even good for a laugh because it tries to self-parody itself thus killing any unintentional funny moments. Rory Calhoun would have added morer dignity to his career by appearing in a basement porno film. "It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent's fritters." Yuck-O!!!
-
I know it's kinda cheesy but I also love "You Only Live Twice". The silouettes of lovely Japanese girls as Nancy Sinatra belts out the theme. Unfortunately IMO, it also marks the beginning of the extremely silly turn the Bond films took.
-
I agree with "O.U.A.T.I.T.W and "The Stand". The creaking windmill, the water dripping on Woody Strode's hat, Jack Elam and the fly. And "Don't fear the Reaper" blasting as we see folks who've been struck down it mid-passage.
-
While I'm on the subject , I think Peter Fonda's wooden performance in this film was NOT helped by his "method acting" in all the dope-smoking scenes. He shoulda got a special mahogany oscar for his portrayal of "Captain America".

Well Stlgal to exceptionally intelligent and perceptive film buffs like us, it's obvious! Lol!

Stlgal the "Crime Does Not Pay" series sounds like a hoot. Have not yet seen it. I LOVE old 40's and 50's hygene and etiquette<--(hadda look THAT one up my original spelling of it was SO bad! Bet Stlgal coulda spelled it!) shorts. Also, anything that talks about "The Fantastic World of the Future in 1960". All kinds of complicated and useless inventions that are WAY to much trouble to mess with. After any of these, I usually have to be scraped off the sofa like a burnt pancake off the grill. -
Toni Basil....geeze TMC get an "Edit" button:)
-
BTW while we're on "EZ Rider", anyone notice the cameo by Tono Basil of " Oh Mickey you're so fine..Hey Mickey!" fame as the dark-haired prostitute? (NOT Karen Black)Would make good trivia Q.
-
Let's not forget "Easy Rider" the most famous non-ending. The 2 main characters get blown away in an act of senseless violence by 2 **** in a pick-up truck. At the time it was seen as "symbolic" and "shocking" but watching it outside the hippy paranoia of the 60's, it's clear that Hopper just had nowhere else to go with the film and nothing to say....so "BLAMMO!!!!!!"

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but to base your critical sense on narrow religious dogma sure does limit your credibility as a critic. It's as if a Hindu critic said that "Best Years of Our Lives" was a terrible movie based on the hamburger eating scene. I must defend the Godfather movies. (You can say anything you want about #3 as I don't consider it even BE a sequel. It's strictly a cash cow) In earlier gangster films the murders were sanicized. One bullet to the chest, half an once of blood, and a pithy "Is this the end of Rico." tag line. Sure the bad guys always got it in te end but, they had a GREAT time until the final reel. GF I &II show real murder: pain, terror, and un-pretty wounds...and lots of blood. However, they in no way glorify crime. We see Michael, a Dartmouth grad & war heroe with a bright future get involved with the Mafia. He becomes a murderer has to flee, sees his wife blown apart, his beloved older brother is masscred, his 2nd wife whom he loves dearly hates and fears him so much she has an abortion to prevent any more Corleones like him being born. He has his sister's husband killed. causing HER to hate and fear him. He is hounded by the government and finally ends up having his last brother killed. He ends up bitter alone and miserable. Some FUN eh? Sign me right up!

Yep, saw "Walk" as a kid at the drive-in and was always struck by the Lyric " One night of prayin'& six nights of fun...the odds against goin' to heaven six to one."
-
As I was watching the opening credits of "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" I realizesd that I wasn't going to watch the movie , just the credits because they were so incredibly well-done: music AND graphics. Other films credits I enjoy are "The Pink Panther" 'nuff said;and "The Shining" (incredible shots from the air of Nicholson's VW driving up the mountain to the Overlook Hotel.) Anybody else have some favorites? I sorta exclude musicals because it's a given that some people just enjoy the music.

Lolite, I grew up in the same era. I remember in the early 60's you could go to the matinee in my town for a quarter. A dime for coke and another for a box of candy and you had an afternoon at the movies for under half a buck! And that included a travelogue ,a cartoon, a short subject, a 2 reel comedy such as the stooges or more rarely a Thelma Todd/Pasty Kelly plus the feature. Hard to believe that this was only 40 years ago.
