  1. Yes Tracy, and in "The Great Race" she takes about 10 pies in the face. Real basic xcomedy stuff!
  2. Susie, yesterday on the Mystery Channel they ran an old Price film that I have fond memories of. It's called "The Last Man on Earth". It was the FIRST movie based on Richard Matheson's novel " I Am Legend". The second time it was done as "The Omega Man" which most people are familiar with.
  3. As part of their tribute to actors who were in both movies and TV, TCM showed "Dive Bomber" with Errol Flynn. While Robt. Osborne noted Fred MacMurray, Craig Stevens, and Ralph Bellamy as movie actors who were also on tv he failed to mention Herbert Anderson who played "Chubby" in the film. You may remember that he played Dennis the Menace's father on that show for the entire run of the show. At least 3 seasons.A little scary to think that you can be forgotten after 3 years of being on a popular tv show back when there were only 3 networks.
  4. Yes I too love TDTESS. I don't know if some of the younger watchers know that the film made extensive use of actual reporters, such as Gabriel Heater and Drew Pearson, thus adding to the realism of the film. Note the symbolic name Klatuu took. : "Mr Carpenter". A clear reference to a certain fellow from Galilee. Another great one is "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" directed by Don Siegel who later gained fame by directing the "Dirty Harry" films. In the film , Dr. Miles Bennel treats a large number of people from his little town of Santa Mira Ca. who claim that " My uncle's not my uncle." We also see a little boy who is terrified of his mother. When Miles gets a call from a freind he finds that the man has discovered a seed pod that has a "blank" human growing inside it, he examines it and it gradually starts to take on the freinds physical attributes and the fun begins. It's hard to watch this film and not be very creeped out. Another goodie is George Pal's "War of the Worlds" about a Martian invasion. I've seen this a dozen times but just recently caught something that I somehow missed before. After L.A. has been evacuated in the wake of the invaders there is looting and fighting as the town is being destroyed by the Martians. In a shot taken from behind , we see 2 looters crash thru the shop window and I noticed they are carring rolls of FABRIC!!! Were they 2 interior designers who couldn't resist taking some free sofa covering?! When I realized who ludicrous this idea was plus the fact I had never caugt it before I just roared till I was wiping my eyes!
  5. I agree Eve. She was excellent in "The Postman Always Rings Twice", plus she was an ACTUAL femme fatal....ask the late gangster Johnny Stompanado! "L.A. Confidential" made a sly reference to this in the scene where Lt. Ed Exley says to Lana Turner..." A hooker cut to look like Lana Turner is still just a hooker." Of course it's the REAL Lana and her dinner companion just happens to be Johnny S. " Off the record, on the Q.T. and very.....hush hush."
  6. Spence in ans to your Q about my handle it's just my nickname. Isn't it ironic that 2 of the 3 best picture wins came in the late 80's early 90's when the western as a genre was pushing up daiseys at ol' boot hill. Here's a trivia fact :"Clint Eastwood" is an anagram of "old west action".
  7. Did anyone else find "The Addams Family Movie" to be an improvement in some ways to the TV show? I was especially impressed with Raul Julia's "Gomez" which was so much nearer to Chas. Addams' original conception of the character. Julia even exposed his own naturally off-center eye which the cartoon Gomez sported. And Angelica Huston was a revelation as Morticia. I've never found her to be even remotely attractive, but here she has this "queen of the undead" thing going on that made me look at her in a whole new light. "Don't torture yourself Gomez.....that's MY job." And of course Christina Ricci was deliciously amoral as Wednesday. A real corker. But even with these great new characterizations I find I still much prefer Jackie Coogan's Uncle Fester and Ted Cassidy's Lurch to be unsurpassed.
  8. Ooops. Please excuse the poor grammer and misspellings in my previous post. Yikes!!!
  9. Who can ever forget Malcomn MacDowell's superb performace as Alexander DeLarge: Chief Droog and purveyor of mayhem and rough sex in "A Clockwork Orange." The classic moment is his obvious enjoyment as he sings that old showtune "Singing in the Rain" in time to the well-placed kicks to the husband he has just forced to watch his own wife being raped. Also MacDowell almost single-handedly placed Caligula atop the list of hated/dispised Roman emperors with his over-the-top portrayal. HIs Caligula almost made Nero seem like a misguided teen-ager. For underated bad girls I've always enjoyed Virgina Mayo as Cody Jarrett's faithless moll as well as her vampy performance as the seductress in Paul Newman's debut film "The Silver Chalace". Which film BTW also featured Jack Palance as an insane evil magician. Palance nearly always played vicious sadists as in "Barabus" and of course "Shane."
  10. Coupla more from "Dr Strangelove". General Jack D. Ripper: "Flurodation is a communist plot to sap and impurify our precious boldily fluids." and Colonel "Bat" Guano to Capt. Lionel Mandrake: "I know what you are...you're a PREVERT! And I think that you're leading a conspiracy of preverts[sic], and that general Ripper found out about you"
  11. My all-time favorite A hole town comes from "the Chase>' The film itself is a diappointment given it's author (Lillian Hellman) and cast( Marlon Brando, E.G. Marshall, Robert Duvall, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Angie Dickenson, Janice Rule, Paul Williams) but the townsfolk are a hoot. Near the end of the film escaped convict Bubba Reeves (Redford) is trapped in a junk yard while the townsfolk who have meanwhile proven to be caricture bigots, lay seige. They throw Molotov Cocktails into the junk cars and roll flaming, gasoline-soaked tires down the hill, as Paul Williams serenades Bubba with a guitar as the Local juvenile delinquents accompany him to a tune with the clever lyrics "Bubba Bubba Bubba". As this Mahem ensues, Brando who has been previously ben beaten up by the local yahoos screams down into the mayhem with a grotesquely swollen face and an even more grotesque Southern accent "Bubber! Bubber! I want ta help ya Bubber!!!" Anyone ELSE see this mess?
  12. Is anyone ELSE sick of seeing people being kicked in the privates ? This act, usually in mostly witless movies has replaced the pie in the face and pants falling down as the ultimate cheap "laff". I mean how many times do we need to see this? You just KNOW that the writers are out of ideas when you see this stuff!
  13. My favorite character actors are Whit Bissle (Psychiatrist in "Caine Mutiny' and Mr. Burris [agriculture official] in "Hud")and Wilford Brimley in "Absence of Malice", "The Thing", and of course "Cocoon". On the female side is the incomparable Thelma Ritter: "All About Eve", "Pillow Talk" etc. etc. etc. She was the Dorothy Parker of cinema who was lovable despite having the most sarcastic personality in film. I have a buncha others but I want to hear who other folks find memorable.
  14. I agree with you Mirabelle, but those qualities made her just about perfect as Madge Sinclair in the wonderful "Picnic." Madge was "tired of just being pretty!" Also featuring one of Rosalind Russell's best performances along with Bill Holden's as Hal.
  15. In real life I prefer NICE people, but in the movies I enjoy "dark" characters because they are usually more complex and interesting. My all time fave is Paul Newman as Hud Bannon in "HUD" (of course). I also loved George C. Scott as Patton. Bogey plays two of my other picks: Capt. Phillip Queeg from "The Caine Mutiny" and Fred C. Dobbs from "The Treasure of Sierra Madre".Best female Characters: Betty Davis as Margo Channing in "All About Eve" and Doris Day as Jan Morrow in "Pillow Talk>" (Talk about a dark character).
  16. A few months back when AMC first went to hell they had a web poll asking "How do you like the new AMC?" By the result, thousands of people e-mailed them. " I just LOVE it, except there aren't enough commercials, oh and could you heavily censor the movies so that vital info is left out because my mind is still in 1958? And could you chop out dialog when you break for commercials. And please add a few more John Wayne films to your schedual. Last month you went 8 hrs without a Duke flic. BTW , keep up the short rotation because I LIKE seeing the same movie 3 hrs later. And kudos on your web site. last month, you managed to post the entire month's schedual by only the 5th of the same month. Oh and 1 more thing... could ya get rid of all those crummy B&W films? *I mean, how could they be "Classics" if the producers were too cheap to film in color? Warmest regards, Theodore Turner, Atlanta Ga. "
  17. One of my favorites is "Inferno". In this film Robert Ryan is at his ill-tempered best as a nasty business man who falls down a slope in the desert and breaks his leg. His wife (Rhonda Fleming) and her lover (William Lundegan) decide to leave him there to die and tell the cops he disappeared into a completely different part of the desert. Rhonda says to her lover: "We're not KILLING him exactly, we're just not SAVING him." Ryan's efforts to save himself and his discovery in a new-born faith in his own abilities make this film a true delight! Also a great confrontation with the evil pair and as a bonus Rhonda Fleming is so sexy that it is entirely believable that a guy would murder for her. Great stuff!
  18. Spence I ABSOLUTELY agree with ya about Frank "Now that you've called me by name...." "Play for your ever-lovin' brother." Old Henry, playing against type.....MAGNIFICENT!!!
  19. "Singing in the Rain" Caberet" "West Side Story" "My Fair Lady" are MY Faves!
  20. Best Movie: "The Godfather" Best Actor: George C. Scott. Best Actress Grace Kelly. Best Director : Stanley Kubrick
  21. Burt was highly under-rated. My favorite Burt films: "7 Days in May" "Atlantic City" and of Course "Birdman". Burt was a trained acrobat who did ALL his own stunts besides being a terrific actor. Oh, almost forgot how much I enjoyed him and Kirk Douglas in "Gunfight at OK Corral", one of 5 pairings of those 2 along with "7 Days".
  22. My 1st movie at a theater was "Old Yeller". (Isn't nearly EVERONE's a Disney flick?). I began sobbing shaking when Old Yeller died. I remeber my father trying to comfort me by pointing out that Old Yeller had pups to carry on his memory, but it didn't MATTER to me. Old Yeller was DEAD!
  23. My favorite Peck roles: Phil Green in "Gentleman's Agreement", Keith Mallory in "The Guns of Naverone" and his WONDERFUL portrayal of Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick". Who can forget him extinguishing "the last doubt" as he destroys St. Elmo's Fire by grasping the apex of the 3 harpoons?
  24. Yes, Norma got the same bad rap as Marion Davies as having a career that was the result of a powerful lover. In Davis case It was William Randolph Hearst. IMHO the rep was earned by the later but NOT by the former.
  25. Hey Bedford ya sure you're not from Pottersville? Every Christmas I get a ton of requests from my family to to my annual "George Bailey reams out Uncle Billy" routine. I do a wicked Jimmy Stewart. I really like "the Women." Much superior to that 50's re-make with June Alison and Joan Collins. Name escapes me for the moment...does anybody recall it?
