I AM familiar with the Vietnam war. If you want to know how American POW's were really treated by the North Vietnamese read "When Hell was in Session" by Jeremia Denton who suffered 7 years of this treatment. The Roulette scene was not based on actual events it was supposed to be an allegory representing brutality. As such I thought it was needlessly intrusive as it later caused Walken's character to behave in a melodramatic fasion. I think I'm allowed to say I didn't think "Deer Hunter" was very good. I thought it was overly long and unrelievedly depressing. The performances were good but the story I thought was rambling and unfocused. Note: my "destroy" comment was made in regard to "Heaven's Gate", not "Deer Hunter". It was one of the first movies to deal with Vietnam in a serious manner, and as such it recieved, I think, too much praise, considering better films about 'Nam that were made latter. Such as "Apocalypse Now", "Platoon" and "Full Metal Jacket". Hey it's about OPINIONS, right?

Ok my dog is hiding so I can't kick him, let me pick on the much-malaigned "Heaven's Gate." Among the idiocies: spending millions to perfectly re-create an authentic 1880's town....and them obscureing it with an endless dust storm!!! The migrant families are being chased by the bad guys and they are shouting their distress...and Cimino feels it's nessicary to subtitle this. "Help!" "Oh no!" "Drive faster!" "Oh dear God!". I thought "The Deer Hunter was mostly crap too. What was up with that silly Russian Roulette game anyway?

P.S.I know the folks who posted here know WHY letter-box exists I posted the explanation because I don't want to assume EVERYONE does. BTW I am not an egg-head. I'm more of a mellon-head.

This has been explained many times. The basic problem is that the movie screen is much more horizontal than vertical. The TV screen is much closer to being square. When the original shape of a film, especially a Cinemascope film is presented there is nothing in the top or bottom to see. This results in any particular item in a film looks smaller, although there is more of the entire actual film to be seen. Some people find this annoying and distracting. Just as some younger movie watchers can't enjoy a black and white film, no matter how good, some folks can't enjoy a film in letter-box. Any format that is unfamiliar, is initially distracting, and it took a while for me also to get used to letter-boxed films. Once I did I was able to enjoy them . I think that they should have a choice and that a film should be available in "pan & scan format as well as letter-box. While I believe that on TCM, Cinemascope films should be shown in letter-box, this should not be done to regular movies, since the loss of the edges of the film is not as crucial.

Third time a charm? WTG Lolite It's 007's Aston Martin DB V. Sorry but I will have to deduct points because it first appeared in "Goldfinger" which followed those 2 films and briefly in "Thunderball."
Desi Jr treated this automotive legend like a street rod and soon tore it up. Fortunately it was rescued by a collector. -
Will it post THIS TIME???

Here's why I care about the statements made by celebrities. They are not elected to any office, they have no special qualifications for uttering these inane views, and in most cases, are not held to any standard of accuracy about what they say. After all, the media rationalizes, they're just movie stars. These statements are given tremendous publicity world-wide and give moral comfort to America-haters and terrorists everywhere. Back during the "farm-aid crisis" Sally Feilds and Jessica Lange got to testify before the House in regard to problems facing America's farmers. Why? Because they PLAYED farm women in movies! Also, these statements can be made with little thought and no regard for any consequences. When Jane Fonda did her idiotic road show in Hanoi, she added to the misery and suffering of men who were starved , beaten, and isolated from almost all human contact. Did her Oscar give her the right to increase their agony? OK, she appologized. BIG DEAL! What did she ever do about trying to make it up to these guys. She donated a portion of the profits from her work-out tapes to various women's groups, but what did she give to V.A. hospitals or veterans aid groups. The answer is the sound of one hand clapping.

Thanks for a great story bkohatl. BTW I didn't cry when Walt or JFK died. John Lennon...man oh man. Totally lost it when I heard "Imagine" played on the radio right after I heard of the assasination while watching "Monday Night Football." Howard Cosell was NOT the best voice to hear THAT news from.Coupla side notes on Disney. In Ira Levin's book "The Stepford Wives", the guy who engineered the replicants was a former employee of the Disney Company who worked in their animatronics division. His nickname in the book was "Diz" because of this. Also, I remember an interview with a Disney exec back in the 70's. The exec was extolling how all the employees of the theme parks were instructed on "tolerance" of the guests. Whether they were rude, filthy and stinking, or just plain obnoxious. The interviewer, refering to Disney's inflexible ban of long or facial hair for park employees asked "You enforce tolerance but YOU'RE not tolerant." The exec then gave a smarmy grin and said. "We pay the bills. We don't HAVE to be tolerant." Gave me my 1st insight as to the phony posturing of this cold corperate empire. Bring back "Song of the South" and "Dumbo" you hypocrits!

I was sick of the French LONG before The Gulf War. Even Robert Devaull said he was relieved his name is Swiss not French. How can anyone take seriously the films of a nation who finds Jerry Lewis to be a comedic genius and a big stupid oaf like Gerald Depardue to be a sex symbol? Remember the French response to the German invasion of 1940? " Oh, table for a hundred thousand? March right this way." Oh and thanks for for extorting us into supporting your colonial war to regain Indo China as the price for joining NATO.

Destroy this movie!

You have my gratitude for serving your country in that hideous war. War is horrible enough when you are fighting for clear-cut, worthwhile objectives, but Vietnam was like a bad used car that you keep sinking more and more money into. The most reprehensible thing was the reaction to returning soldiers by an obnoxious minority that had the idea that the G.I.s were "baby killers." Please don't mistake my personal dislike for "The Deer Hunter" as either disrepect or ignorance of the sacrifices of the Vietnam vet.
