  1. Thanks MCOH, I'm going to have to add Videoredo, Handbrake, and Avidemux to my little arsenal of video capture and editing utilities.
I started using Bandicam a few years ago. It isn't freeware, but for what it does isn't all that expensive.
The outfit who make and control it make periodic improvements to keep it up-to-date and the free updates are part of the package. Software is restricted to individual PCs, but additional licenses for the same person are pretty cheap. I have been pretty satisfied. Are you familiar with with it?

  2. Handbrake and Videoredo sound like really cool programs to have.
I usually record on-line streaming programs with Bandicam. I can set it to record a single program, or if it's a continuous stream of programs I can set it to record longer, or just continue recording, depending on how much hard drive space I want to use up.
I can then "edit" what I've recorded with other programs that cut & splice (like Bandicut) or programs that allow me to remove songs and other audio or video that I may want to separate, or even format a movie to burn a video DVD (which I seldom do anymore).
Some of this stuff is freeware, and some you have to purchase, but for guys like us, it's a way to keep feeding the habit.

  3. Gosh Jimmy, the theme thing is what TCM programmers do best. How else can they keep recycling the same movies over and over if not by creating different themes for us to re-watch the same-o, again and again...
Of course when TCM plays something that I don't feel like rewatching it's like a big commercial break so I can go to the bathroom, take a long shower, or soak in the tub. Get out of the house, exercise, shop, or socialize with other human beings. So it's all good to me.
What does burn me is when TCM screws up their ON-DEMAND programming, or streams a movie in tiny, little "Window-Box" format. But heck, in all of our lives a little rain must fall, and in some drought ridden parts of the country that ain't such a bad thing, is it? ;):)

i sadly did not catch all of TWO FOR THE ROAD the last time it aired, but I caught a goodly chunk of it and it is SUCH A BRILLIANT FILM.

It's like STANLEY DONEN went to go see BLOW-UP and was like, "hmm, I wonder if someone were to use extremely unconventional editing and camera work and a challenging narrative structure BUT did it with a PLOT and LIKEABLE CHARACTERS and a REWARDING ENDING."

it's one of the most avant-garde films of the 1960's and Audrey's fashions are FANTASTIQUE.

Really enjoy Audrey Hepburn films and though most of todays have been presented on TCM several times, there are a few (CHARADE, NUN'S STORY, WAIT UNTIL DARK) that pretty well illustrate her range (from comedy to serious and thriller drama) and are almost always worthy of a rewatch.
MONTE CARLO is good to catch a glimpse of an early post-war Hepburn, and TWO FOR THE ROAD for reasons already well mentioned.
While I personally enjoy GREEN MANSIONS, I consider it more of a niche film for people who like exotic adventures, and enjoy seeing a film depiction of one of William H. Hudson's more fanciful works.

Though it is almost every "older" guy's fantasy to have a romance with a girl half his age, I find LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON a little uneasy to watch more than say once every other a year or so.
Audrey's performance as a young girl infatuated with a much older man is still a delight, and Chevalier is a scene stealer... But Cooper attempts to display an embarrassingly "boyish" charm that would have been more passable for him few years earlier (i.e. when he played opposite a 23 yo Pat Neal in The Fountainhead (1949)). IMO, in LITA he just appears much too "long in the tooth" to play such a "seductive" playboy type. (Though I may have to rethink that one. Considering current affairs he may simply be realistically playing his age.)
During production, Audrey was 27 (and appeared young enough to be a teen) and though 56 is not necessarily too old an age to play such a role, to my eyes Cooper appeared much older than that (even in black & white).
It was rumored that after making this movie Coop went in for some cosmetic surgery, which may well be true, as in movies made immediately afterward his appearance was decidedly "younger." (i.e. in Ten North Frederick (1958) where he gets romantically involved with his daughters roommate, played by a 26 year old  Suzy Parker.)

After Audrey we get three strong dramatic performances by the ever watchable Burt Lancaster.
    Followed by two psycho thrillers.

All in all, a pretty entertainingly programed Friday at TCM. B)

  7. I guess I (we) need to be more careful about what we "wish" for.
Awhile back I was posting back and forth with Limey and a couple of others, and we discussed the merits of having a few more "quick reaction" emoji's to use around here.
I remember "Yuck" and "Duh" emoji's were mentioned. Perhaps a couple more.
Having a few like those would spare many of us from making an entire post just to say something that simple.

Then somebody decided to give us an entire page of diverse and very teeny tiny emoji's....
I haven't used any of them, but don't think that they are of the "quick Response" (as in unnecessary to make a post) type.

However it does remind me of a little joke to share. Hopefully it won't be deleted.

A guy walked into a bar and pulled up a stool at the counter. He asked for an empty  shot glass which was provided.
He placed the empty shot glass upside down on the counter, and then produced a magnificent miniature Baby Grand Piano, and placed it in front of the shot glass. Next he produced a little man, 12 inches tall, who was dressed in a tuxedo. The little man sat upon the shot glass, as if it were a stool, and began to play a most beautiful solo concerto. The music filled the bar, and all were entranced.
At the conclusion the bartender said to the man, "That is absolutely amazing, I've never seen anything like it before. How did you find that little man?"
To which the man at the counter produced an ancient appearing brass lamp, and proceeded to explain,
"I was strolling along the beach one day and found this lamp washed upon the shore. I picked it up and brushed it off and a genie appeared and said that he was from the lamp, and that he would grant me a single wish of whatever my heart desired."
The bartender said, "No kidding?... Do you think it would work for me? Would you let me rub your lamp?"
The man said, "Sure, go ahead, but be very careful about what you wish for."
So the bartender wiped off his hands and gently rubbed the magic lamp.
Sure enough, the Genie appeared and offered the bartender a single wish.
The bartender scratched his head for a moment, then smiled and said, "I wish I had a million bucks."
The Genie nodded then disappeared back into the lamp.
Suddenly the outside sky became very dark, and then from the front door, and through the back door, and through every open window flew into the bar hundreds, upon hundreds, thousands, upon thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands.... too many to count, perhaps a million...   ducks...    Ducks flying everywhere. The place was an absolute mess with ducks.
The bartender stood there in absolute amazement, with a dumbfounded look upon his face.
When he recovered his speech he looked at the man and said, "I can't believe what just happened, it is absolutely incredible! But I think maybe that Genie is a little hard of hearing."
The man nodded his head in agreement and replied, "Are you telling me... You don't think that I actually asked for a twelve inch pianist do you?";):)

Wonderful! Above and Beyond the Call of Duty! But Thanks.

Okay, here it is (as promised) and just for you. So you know how much you are luv'd around here... (no matter how "some" of us may occasionally tease with you).

Ben's wraparound for THE MUDLARK (1950) which aired the evening of Thursday, 4/26/2018, on TCM.

    Ben Mankiewicz intro, (1.43 min)

The set is back-lit in evening mode. Ben stands in the two step sunken "living room" slightly off-center to his left, facing the camera. He is dressed in a dark brown business suit  (a white hankie tops the left breast pocket of the suit), white shirt and brown striped tie. Dark brown shoes. Hair combed, with dark rim glasses. Hands lightly clasped at mid waist.
    He addresses the audience:
"Welcome to TCM everybody, I'm Ben Mankiewicz."

Hands part slightly, camera gradually zooms closer:
"Tonight we are covering movies with high society and proper manners set during the Victorian era."

Hands together again, then moving apart:
"Up next a drama that captures the sweeping inequalities of the Victorian society from the homeless all the way to Queen Victoria herself. But crafted in an idealistic and rather and charming way."

Hands clasped, fingers interlaced, camera centered on Ben, visible from the waist up. The darkened "evening" stage window visible from his right shoulder.
"From 20th Century Fox in 1950, a TCM premier, THE MUDLARK."
"Irene Dunne stars as Queen Victoria and who becomes the focus of a young orphan, the Mudlark of the title."

Hands slightly visible above the bottom edge of the screen. Apart and open with emphasis,
"Mudlark referred to people living off of what they foraged from the banks of the Thames River. The equivalent term of homeless kids in town was Street Urchin."
"Anyway when the kid, played by Andrew Ray, finds a cameo of the Queen's likeness he learns that she is considered the mother of England and he then sets off to see her at Windsor Castle."
"Meanwhile Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, played by Alec Guinness, needs the Queen to use her influence to help pass reforms in Parliament, but first he has to coax her out of her seclusion which has lasted 10 years since the death of her husband, Prince Albert."
"Based on a book by Theodore Bonnet, "The Mudlark" features another well-known historic figure, the Queens confident, John Brown, who's relationship with Victoria was fictionalized in "Mrs. Brown" from 1997, starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly."

Brings hands together, takes a deep breath and continues:
"In The Mudlark Brown is played by Finlay Currie. There's also a cameo... other definition of cameo, by Alfred Hitchcock's daughter, Pat Hitchcock, playing a servant."
"In addition to emphasizing the failure of Victorian society to deal with extreme poverty, the movie also provides some insight into how ordinary English servants, soldiers, politicians too, navigated the occasionally difficult Victorian era."
"From director John Negulesco in 1950, with a screenplay by Negulesco's frequent collaborator, Nunnally Johnson, who also produced the picture, here's "The Mudlark."

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    Ben Mankiewicz outro, (1.0 min)

Ben stands in the sunken "living room" set, slightly left of camera's center. Full body, with hands together. Large grey chair on his left, large "fireplace" behind his right.
"On October 30th, 1950, "The Mudlark" was screened for King George the Sixth and the Royal family, including his daughter... and that would include the future Queen Elizabeth, at the annual Royal Film Performance."

Hands parted and then closed for emphasis,
"Reportedly the family enjoyed the movie even though the British press complained about an American, Irene Dunne, playing Queen Victoria."

Camera zooming in, Ben in center screen, visible from waist up,
"Fox studio chief, Darryl Zanuck, was indifferent to those complaints. In fact Zanuck was insistent that producer Nunnally Johnson and director John Negulesco, keep the characters British accents in check."

    Open hands, Fingertips touching,
"Zanuck long argued, "Nothing has done more to kill English pictures in America than pronounced British (*and Australian) accents." He believed that American audiences hated British accents, Scottish, most of all (*and Australian second), so British pictures had to be exceptional to clear that barrier." Slight sardonic smile.

"The Mudlark earned a single Oscar nomination for Margaret Furse' costume design."

"Up next Katherine Hepburn stars as a stifled woman who lashes out against Victorian repression and crusades for female equality."

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Okay, *() were my additions... for your amusement.:)

I actually considered making a separate intro/outro of my own in a "Mankiewicz" like style, and have you guess which was the real Ben. But then thought better against it.
However, knowing how much you adore Aussie accents, I couldn't help myself from giving you just a little ribbing in that regard. ;)

  9. Wow Tom, I feel kinda silly.
I just now realized that you posted this thread back in 10/23/2016, and that newbie JimTCM had just resurrected it.
I had just glanced that it was started by you, and read through the posted replies without paying any attention to the actual dates, until just now.
Had I done that in the first place I don't think that I would have written anything at all here.
But I thought that this was something that was concerning you at this moment and felt compelled to add something hopefully "profound" into the conversation. So much for my paying attention to detail here.
Feel pretty dumb about it. But heck, for it being a morbid topic it certainly generated a lot of views in a hurry, either then or now. So much for morbid curiosity, eh? ;)

I agree that some will see this thread as a creepy subject matter. Not many, after all, like to think about dead bodies.

What I do regard as outrageous is the availability on the internet of morgue photos of dead celebrities. What a disgusting lack of respect for a person at a moment when they are at their most vulnerable. Call me a prude but I don't think the general public should have the right to view the dead body of a famous person laid out on a morgue table. And how painful it must be to surviving family of that celebrity.

I've stumbled across two such instances of a couple of major film stars while browsing photos on the net. I was shocked, to put it mildly, that those photos existed for viewing here. Naive of me, perhaps, to be surprised to see this line of indecency crossed.

Depictions of bodies in various states of "desecration" has been part of social "norms" since "we" first started creating images on cave walls.
Different times, different societies, different values, but otherwise the same people.
I try to consider that and not make judgements based upon contemporary values, or my personal ethos.

Little shocks me anymore, but I do find myself repulsed by glamorized cruelty for the sake of sensationalism.
I know that it exists for anyone who wants to seek it out, but I don't wish to have to walk around with my eyes closed to avoid it.

I don't enjoy looking at the dead shells of what once was. And yet I can spend hours upon hours in museums or in some "exotic" location examining artifacts and relics from the recent and ancient past.
I am drawn to graveyards and stroll around reading headstones and tributes of long past loved ones.
I have spent days examining Dachau, Auschwitz, and similar sundry places.
I have marveled at the archeological digs of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and stared at the casts of the long dead.
I find myself attempting to reconstruct the people that left these things behind. Imagine the types of lives they lead and what they were like.
Would they be like me today? or would I be like them in their time?
I'll explore long abandoned cabins and dwellings and gently handle whatever i find there.
But closer to home I am repulsed by certain images. I have seen certain images in magazines and journals, autopsy photos of former celebrities and presidents that used to draw such adoration. I don't like looking at them.

I long ago stopped attending funerals (and weddings), and when my time comes to go I'd prefer that nobody even know about it.
If I could plan my end I would head back north and find some wilderness place that once gave me such joy and solace.
It would be one of those rare, warm and sunny Autumn days. I'd find a place where the moss was as thick as a stuffed down mattress and lie down. I'd close my eyes and pass.
My body would serve the nature around it, as nature had once provided for me.
I would return to the soil most naturally, and nothing would remain to show my passing.
It would be left to wonder, if any cared think about me, where I was and what I was doing, and whether or not I was no more. But no one would know for sure... and I would like that.

It's a pretty weird subject matter, I know, and one that I never thought about until yesterday. That's when I heard, much to my surprise, that Lon Chaney Jr. did exactly that.

    Chaney_Lon_Jr_1.jpg

Sadly, I also heard that a couple of the young interns dissecting Chaney's cadaver in 1973 had never heard of him. Of course he had been largely out of the limelight for some time in his final years, appearing in some pretty dreadful little films to make a living. I wonder if he donated his body out of financial necessity, lacking the money to prepare for a proper funeral. Just speculation on my part there.

Just out of curiosity, would anyone know of any other celebrities that donated their bodies to science, as well? I suspect that Chaney is on a very short list.

Kind of superficially morbid, but not an unnatural curiosity to have.

I made it a point when I was in High School to visit a morgue and a mortuary, and a couple of morticians. I told them up-front that I wanted to see the bodies and learn what became of people after they died. How they were handled and treated before they were cremated and buried.
I'd already seen dead animals and my grandmother took me to a couple of funerals when I was quite young, where I glanced at the waxy corpses. But when I became older I grew strangely curious.
Since that time I have seen a lot of bodies. Too many actually.
There was a time... my grandmothers time and before, when persons used to keep the dead company in their own homes before burial. Kids were exposed to the natural end of life all the time.

    * Someone here, I think it may have been CG, even did a thread on Morte and Bella Morte; I'll have to see if I can locate that one now. *

One good thing about Chaney's donation is he was already thoroughly pickled with ETOH when they got him, so no necessity to embalm him with formaldehyde.
I always hated dealing with irksome, noxious and nauseous formaldehyde in the lab.

BTW I think that I've always treated bodies and their remains (wherever I have found them) with a degree of respect.
Sadly, some of my former comrades and colleagues seemed to delight in desecration, even photographing their acts for sharing with others.
I understand the need to relieve stress with "humor," but for me there are certain boundaries that should be crossed lightly.

I have treated animals that I have killed with reverence as I deconstructed them. I can feel no less toward former members of my own species.

    * ADDENDUM
Well I located the thread, and it was CG who started it. It was Latin, and it was about death. But I got the title wrong, it was called Memento Mori, not Morte or Bella Morte, as I confabulated.
I perused it again and glanced at a few of the links.
Interesting topic (as few other than CG would dream up) and tangents.
Not exactly relevant to Tom's subject matter here, but perhaps he might find it worth looking at....

I think I may be one of the few that feels this way...but I find Alicia Malone to NOT be best suited for a role as a TCM host. My wife and I both simply cringe whenever she opens her mouth. I find her particular Australian accent too annoying to bare and her on-camera presence very wooden. I know all the hosts are reading from a tele-prompter, but sadly she does so quite obviously. She's got no on-camera personality. I know that's something a person can perfect over time. But the nasally accent is killing us and I fear won't go away!

    Hmmmmm.....
Well unlike many, I really haven't found anything that annoying in any of the hosts, and guest hosts over the years....
Unlike some, I enjoyed Drew Barrymore with Robert.
I even found wooden Matthew Broderick sort of entertaining to look at, for a couple of intros anyway.
I found nothing repulsive with Tiffany (quite the contrary), and grew to accept her as one of the gang, but then maybe that's just part of my generally accepting nature.
I never found Ben's voice to be so nasally that I couldn't clearly understand him, but then my hearing isn't as acute as it once was, so perhaps I am missing out on the truly annoying stuff that other people hear.

I thought Dave Karger was one of the most promising of all the fill-in hosts back when RO was sick.
The only time that he sorta annoyed me was when he allowed that dufus co-host lead him astray with all of his ungrounded purely subjective inferences during the Gay movie month. Dave kept grinning at and laughing along with everything said, as if he knew no better.... while I on the other hand was arguing with an inanimate TV screen.

I was bugged and still am that T.V. was dropped like she was. I thought that she was coming along quite well, and since she was one of the "family" of persons that I regularly invited into my home, I sorta naturally felt a little protective. But then TCM is a heartless beast beneath the facade, so it is what it is. I am glad to hear that she wasn't totally dumped and is still working behind the scenes.

I think Alicia Malone has a charming accent, but then it reminds me of an Aussie girlfriend I once had and she was quite charming. I like her eyes and her on-screen personality.
She was hosting a Lassie movie and while reading off the teleprompter made a little side comment that I am sure was all her own... regarding something she read and said about a little Cairn Scottish Terrier guarding his masters grave, she responded to herself (and us) with "cute." With that I was smitten, because I thought it was "cute" too, and she was cute for saying so.
One other thing about Alicia that makes me stare at her is that I've noticed that she talks from the left side of her mouth. Not being critical, just an observation. It makes me wonder if she is bothered with TMJ issues?

Anyway, I've already accepted Dave and Alicia, and I hope that TCM isn't callous enough to dump either of them too soon as I'll again think that shameful.

But my endorsement, or lack there of, really means nothing, because they have apparently already met with the very discriminating approval of our very own Hibi. As long as she stands with them, who dares to stand against them,... eh? ;):)

    Hi Stephen -

Thanks for the reply.  Since posting, I realized two things.  First, although the forum is for TCM.com, this is actually a TCM On Demand problem.  I don't think there's a forum for On Demand.  In other words, this is through the Xfinity On Demand feature, directly on my TV.  I don't go through a laptop or tablet.  And I think this is a TCM problem.  I have never seen this skipping or out-of-sync problem on anything else I've watched on demand.

Second, I did try the TCM app on my tablet.  Here there's no skipping, and everything is in sync.  I'll try casting from the tablet to the TV to watch the movie.  It's a little more awkward than watching on cable, but I really want to see this movie.  So this is what you did, when you watched on your laptop.  We've shown that this works.

Thanks for your reply. It narrows down the issue.

    Michael

    Thanks for the clarification Mike
My TV provider (COX) has some ON-DEMAND features as well. Some require a higher tier subscription level to access, and others require specifically signing up through my COX account to make available. I only use (and very seldom at that) the Free ones that require no additional effort to access.
But because I've found TCM to be so problematic (esp. in regards to their WATCH TCM streaming features) I have not desired to compound any issue and make my trouble-shooting even more difficult, as I have found COX's technical staff to be lacking, and access to anyone (save maybe a Moderator) at TCM is non-existent.
So when on the road I use my PC for streaming and viewing a lot. At home I use an HDMI cable to watch TCM on my bigger (32" TV screen) through my PC (via Ethernet from my modem) but I refuse to enable any of the Smart Wi-fi spyware features on the TV or PC unless I am testing something specifically.
I know I'm an "oddball" and very much in the minority these days. Don't have a Facebook account either.
Too bad I (we) can't totally cut the Credit Reporting scam agencies out of my (our) life as well (damn Equifax).

Anyway, glad that you have a work-around. Though (based on what you have shared) it now appears to be a problem between your TV provider and TCM, rather than between you and TCM directly.

    BTW, thank you.
I have now watched enough of  "Third Finger, Left Hand" to find it thoroughly entertaining, and one that I want to see completely. Very funny Douglas & Loy screwball style comedy that I don't recall ever seeing before! :)

  14. SEVERAL CORRECTIONS OBSERVED, STILL MANY LEFT UNCORRECTED

I have updated my original post to reflect TCMs recent corrections.
This afternoon rechecked every title, and observed that several features from Friday through Sunday morning (4/6-4/29/2018) are now available ON-DEMAND and at least Load & Begin to Play.

NOTE: I don't have the time (nor interest) to watch every one of the movies that TCM broadcasts, but when I notice a problem with something that I would like to watch that is evidently "supposed" to be Available ON-DEMAND, I often check a few other titles surrounding it to assess whether or not it is an isolated issue or worse.
Under "normal" circumstances an ON-DEMAND movie will load and begin to play on my system within a few seconds. When checking I generally allow at least a minute to see if a movie will load and begin to play.
Unless I watch an entire feature I am unable to assess whether the stream remains consistent throughout.
So if someone notices repetitive problems (i.e. stuttering, freezing, sync issues, pixilation, etc.) please try to offer more specifics when posting (ISP/TV provider, specific times of occurrence, i.e. 5.32 min. into movie, etc.) can be even more helpful when cross-checking.

PLEASE refer to the OP for overall status updates.

Though TCM staff are apparently making an effort to "fix" these current problems, the original "viewing Window" remains unchanged, and therefore quite truncated. In this sense, those of us who subscribe to TCM for the ON-DEMAND streaming features are cheated again, whenever these problems are "allowed" to occur by TCM.

Thus far the following Features still remain UNCORRECTED and UNVIEWABLE:

"Third Finger, Left Hand" is now on demand.  Our provider is Xfinity.  At exactly 4:25, the film sputters and then goes about 4 seconds out of sync.  This happens in SD and HD.  This happens fairly regularly with TCM on demand.  What I want to know is this: Is there a way to get this fixed?  Is there a way to report when this happens?  Does TCM want to know when it happens?  I'm happy to report it when it does, if anyone is going to listen.

    Thanks.

    Thanks Mike for posting this.
I just Loaded & Played "Third Finger, Left Hand" on my PC, allowed it to play the first 15 plus minutes with NO problems observed at my end.
My TV & ISP provider is COX.
Based on this single discrepancy leads me to think that your problem (in this case) is NOT due to TCM, but perhaps either your ISP or TV provider.
Of course there can be numerous other reasons for such issues to occur. i.e. I had several intermittent problems a few years ago, and though my hardware was sound, a bad (30 plus year old, frayed through the insulation) pole line was finally discovered to be the root.
Agree though, many reoccurring problems originating with TCM, so always good to post about it so that some of us here can cross-check.

  16. Wow, too many cuties to choose just one (or two, or three, or....).
(seems like my eyes have always been bigger than my.... in that regard) ;):)
Of course if child stars were allowed it would be Shirley Temple hands down.
But restricted to just adult female actresses from the 30's,.... I'll just add a couple that haven't been mentioned yet that have always caught my fancy.

    Anita Louise and Dolores Costello
Maybe not quite as cutesy as some already mentioned, but still quite alluring in a very "cute" way I think. :P

Trouble finding a single cute picture to display for these dolls, so....

  17. THE EARTHLING (1980)
An American-Australian production filmed on location in Australia in 1979 and released in 1980.
Directed by Peter Collinson and featuring a 61 year old William Holden with a 9 year old Ricky Schroder as the main characters which almost single-handedly carry the film.

Holden plays Patrick Foley, a man without a family and dying from cancer who decides to return to his Australian roots for one last time.
Schroder plays Shawn Daley, an orphaned young boy whose parents have been killed in an RV crash while vacationing in the Outback.
When the two cross paths in the bush, the man shows the boy how to survive in the wilderness, and the boy shows the man a capacity to love that he'd almost forgotten.

For William Holden this movie must have been like playing a part very close to his heart and likely appealed to his most passionate nature, and Ricky Schroder was at his outstanding child actor best in this movie.
A gently touching score and memorable theme song ("Halfway Home," sung by Maureen McGovern) sticks in the mind long after the movie ends.

Sadly the film suffered from mixed reviews and did poorly at the box office in Australia, and played with little fan-fare in U.S. theaters.

I first saw this movie in the early 80s. I was in rural Alaska and had just emerged from spending almost a year in the bush.
I was visiting some friends who were building a very large cabin on the outskirts of Wasilla. It was a big project and they were doing practically all of the work themselves so it took several seasons to complete. They were living in a large framed wall-tent at the time but already had access to electricity and a well, and (amazingly) cable television.
One afternoon THE EARTHLING came on the set. The theme of the movie strongly resonated with me and I was immediately drawn into it. I hadn't paid attention to the credits, but I recognized William Holden's voice, before I recognized him.
I had long been a fan of Holden, but had seen few of his later movies at that time, except a little romdram called BREEZY (in the mid 70's) in which Holden played a middle aged business man who becomes romantically involved with a flower child (played by Kay Lenz).
Holden was beginning to age hard and I don't like to see my fav's get old, so in those days I steered away from their "past prime" movies.
THE EARTHLING was Holden's next to last feature film. He played in S.O.B. the following year and died just a few months after its release in 1981. William Holden was only 63 when he passed.

On another sad note, EARTHLING director Peter Collinson also passed away from lung cancer shortly after its release. Collinson was 44.

I am very glad that TCM aired this movie as part of their Star of the Month tribute to this fine actor.
Though I wish that they would have shown it earlier in the evening as I would have liked to have heard what Stefanie Powers had to say about Bill's impressions of his part in this simple, yet bittersweet little drama.
THE EARTHLING may not appeal to everyone, but if you enjoy a good down-to-earth wilderness film, survival type movies, movies filmed in the Australian out-back, movies with a conservation undertone, or are simply fans of either Ricky Schroder or William Holden, then this movie is right up your alley!

I don't recall TCM ever showing THE EARTHLING before and they may sadly never air it again.
It hasn't popped up ON-DEMAND (yet?), and they are having some serious, as yet unresolved, movie streaming issues this past week.

THE EARTHLING is currently available for purchase from Walmart or Amazon

    https://www.amazon.com/Earthling-William-Holden/dp/B01CKXG7Z6

However, I suggest trying your local library for a free borrow first, and if they don't have it on their shelves it never hurts to request an inter-library loan.

Oh, Thank you. But I do have a copy of it I recorded from the Fox station. I just havent got around to watching it yet. What bugged me about missing it on TCM, was I wanted to hear what they had to say about it on the wraparounds. Hopefully it will be shown again at some point!

Great, glad you can watch it at your leisure. Silly to send you a DVD just to hear the wraparound.
Tell you what, I'll re-watch it and write down what Ben said and transcribe it just for you in a post in this thread.
How's that for show'n you a little love and appreciation. ;):)

I wish that TCM would devote some time to the English films that made little Andrew Ray a star at such a tender age.

I would love to see him in "The Yellow Balloon" from 1953.

Never seen the The Yellow Balloon from '53 (would like to though), but fell in love with The Red Balloon (1956) when they showed it in my elementary school cafeteria on one rainy Southern California day.

  19. MORE INCREDIBLE, AMAZING STREAMING SCREW-UPS by TCM

Won't load, Won't play, On that Day's Schedule, but Not On the All Movies alphabetized titles List,

Ah so many just since last week... Where do I begin...
Perhaps I should just present the relevant portion of the TCM schedule Line by Line with a description after each listed feature.
With dates and a relative sequence, perhaps someone at TCM (assuming that this information ever gets that far) will better be able to trouble-shoot how these things happened, or at least upon whose "watch" they occurred (hint, hint, the "someone" that maybe "dropped the ball" or perhaps didn't know what they were doing in the first place???).

So aside from the other (hopefully unrelated) issues that are posted about in other recent threads, we have these NOT NEW (since it has happened like this before) Returning with a vengeance issues!

    In a nutshell,
(#1) TCM is again showing at the end of a movie broadcast that it is ALSO AVAILABLE ON-DEMAND, and then NOT making it available ON-DEMAND (happened before, and most recently at the end and following this years 31 Days of Oscar, and again with NOAH'S ARK (1928) earlier this month, fortunately for viewers, TCM staff finally corrected most of those problems within a few days so we still had a small ON-DEMAND viewing window)

NOTE: refer to previous threads/posts for more detail on this.

(#2) TCM shows that a movie or short feature is AVAILABLE ON-DEMAND on the current or previous Days SCHEDULE (which is only available for viewing that day and backward viewing to the previous day) BUT the viewer is UNABLE to Load or Play the movie from the SCHEDULES ON-DEMAND play button, AND TCM Doesn't follow-up with the title by NOT Listing it in the ALL MOVIES Alphabetized Play List.

So the viewer unable to watch (or attempt to watch) any of these titles once they have vanished from that Days SCHEDULE!

(#3) Entering one of these titles in the SEARCH FOR A FILM, ACTOR. ETC. box above the SIGN-IN button is relatively useless, as even when one of these titles reappears, it remains unloadable & unplayable.

(#4) Several of the titles that actually are "transferred" or "added" to the ALL MOVIES Alphabetized Play List still refuse to Load or Play, leaving a black screen.
Whereas some of those listed before and after the unplayable title will load and play as they should, to no apparent rhyme or reason???
Again that has happened before (and again relatively recently) with TCM ON-DEMAND, so refer back to previous threads and posts for more detail.

NOTE: some other viewers have posted similar BLACK SCREEN issues when trying to LIVE STREAM a movie... So this issue may be a broader streaming concern and NOT just affecting ON-DEMAND streaming.

Again, as REPEATED in Previous threads and Posts, this is NOT how TCM is supposed to operate (at least this is NOT how TCM states that they operate).
Per TCM HELP > General FAQs
    http://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/help/#info

Movies are available on Watch TCM 7 days after they air on the TCM network on TV.
In most cases, movies are available within 3 hours after they air on the network, and then they are available for 7 days.

Per my experience these last few years using the WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND streaming those FAQs have been the general standard. But more and more often in recent months there have been these broad swaths of exception, where, for whatever reason, some person or persons at TCM apparently "drop the ball" causing or allowing such problems to occur.

The uninitiated viewer may think that the problem is at his or her end... But thanks to these boards we can cross check and verify many of these problems and assure ourselves that the problem too often originates with TCM.

Unfortunately we have no effective way to communicate more directly with anyone at TCM to even report these issues, and must rely and hope that a Moderator here will expeditiously mediate on our behalf....

A relatively simple solution to prevent or quickly correct such problems is to have well trained technical staff to begin with and/or at least well-trained Quality Assurance tech personnel to monitor the output, perhaps utilizing various commonly used test devices. Sadly, It appears that neither is the case!

    Okay, enough subjectivity.
The following is a portion of my TCM schedule with NOTEs

    ................................

    ................................

Please be aware, that past experience has shown that sometimes after a day (or two, or three, or more) one or some of the "absent" titles will suddenly appear on the ALL MOVIES Alphabetized Play List (albeit with a highly truncated "viewing window").
And sometimes those already on that list that refuse to load and play one day may suddenly and mysteriously play normally at another time.
So if you have a favorite that you wanted to Watch ON-DEMAND, it may pay to frequently check back.
Of course if the "7-Day Viewing Window" has lapsed without correction, then that movie is lost until the next time when (hopefully) maybe, TCM really will make it AVAILABLE ON-DEMAND.

If Not, well there's the possibility that other ON-Line sources may have it (i.e. maybe Netflix or Amazon, YouTube, etc.) and the local library is a good place to borrow dvds for free. (Note: if your library doesn't currently have a title they still may be able to get it via an inter-library loan.
When TCM has burned me on a movie that I am really interested in watching I have often had luck with the library, so long as there is a commercial dvd available and if I am willing to be patient.

FELLOW VIEWERS, PLEASE POST ANY RELEVANT COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS ABOUT ANY OF THE ABOVE IN THIS THREAD!

MODERATOR, PLEASE CROSSCHECK ANY OF THESE MENTIONED TITLES, AND THEN PLEASE FORWARD THIS CONCERN TO WHOMEVER YOU THINK MAY BE WILLING AND ABLE TO HELP FIX THIS (AS SOON AS POSSIBLE)

    Thank you

    EDIT: 5/1/2018 Updated
    * Post Updated 5/2/2018 to reflect added titles, remaining uncorrected titles, & any recent corrections by TCM.
** Post Updated 5/5/2018 to reflect added titles, remaining uncorrected titles, & any recent corrections by TCM.
    Post Updated 5/6/2018,  5/7/2018, 5/8/2018, 5/9/2018, 5/10/2018, 5/11/2018, 5/12/2018, 5/13/2018, 5/14/2018,

If the current corrections are the result of Moderator assistance and reporting, please continue to help us by keeping TCM informed that many features still require correction to allow viewers to receive at least part of what we are paying for.

*** Moderator, though on-going corrections and a return to some "normalcy" is finally being observed, these problems still continue to persist. Please acknowledge in this thread whether or not you have been and are mediating for us.
I would like to know if the corrections that are being made are the result of your mediation on our behalf, or merely coincidental
(i.e. someone at TCM is actually trying to do things as they should, and correct and maybe prevent some of this, But not the result of your mediation or anything we have posted here)
I would like to know if any of our threads and posts are actually stimulating some beneficial action at TCM, or merely informing ourselves (viewers) that these issues are the result of TCM and NOT either their equipment, ISP, or TV Provider.
A Moderator acknowledgement one way or the other would be very useful feedback in this regard.
Sadly (No thanks to an Unresponsive TCM),  Board Moderators appear to be the ONLY avenue of any sort of communication with TCM left to us.
    MODERATOR PLEASE RESPOND!

    Thank you

  20. Discovered another Tiny "Window-Box" format movie to add to the previous list:
*THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (1960)
I again repeat that in the past, it has been a relatively infrequent thing (i.e. noticed maybe once every 3 or 4 months) when TCM streams an ON-DEMAND movie in this type of practically useless format (especially so when attempting to watch on smaller screens).
However to see FIVE of these "Window-Boxers" in a single month is quite an unusual rarity.
I sincerely hope that this will NOT become a trend with TCM ON-DEMAND as this format renders these movies next to uselessly "unviewable" on any laptop or smaller size screen. AND with the added distortion, I imagine most persons (myself included) would refuse to watch one at all!

AGAIN (with maybe one exception) Each of these movies has been available ON-DEMAND prior to this in a NON-Window-Box format (except maybe THE HORSE SOLDIERS (1959), which I watched live on my TV in Wide-Screen "Letter-Box" format, but NOT "Window-Box" format, though I can't recall if I have ever seen it ON-DEMAND before?)
So it is NOT like this is the ONLY WAY (format) that TCM can make these movies available to us ON-DEMAND.

I will say this, *THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (1960) was at least presented in a NON-Distorted "Window-Box" format, meaning that it was UNLIKE the others that also had the tiny images further squashed, flattened, and widened (stretched horizontally) further distorting the tiny images presented....

I sure hope that this information is verified and forwarded by the Moderator to someone at TCM that hopefully gives a damn about these types of issues?????

    Please, and Thank You

  21. Thank you so much misswonderly for this touching thread.

I had been watching TCM for several years before I even glanced at the website.
Then I became an infrequent lurker for a few years before I made my first post here.
I am not a regular by any means, and I have sometimes not posted for many months at a time.
I never gave it any serious thought that I might actually be missed by anyone here if I vanished...
But I was touched by a few here when I first joined... and have been by several more since that time.

One of the first persons to respond to me here was Kyle in Hollywood. It saddened me deeply when I read of his passing. lzcutter (who for many years I thought was male) was also one of those early ones. Thankfully, she is still around (at least I saw one of her posts in January this year), though I don't believe that she posts as much as she used to here.

Good ole Dobsy was such a character. I really enjoyed him, he was such a fixture... a constant. I miss his presence here.
So many names mentioned in this thread have brought back memories. Especially the namesake DGF (formerly Finance).
I sometimes notice the absence of a poster and wonder about them.
A few others come to mind that haven't posted for awhile. I haven't seen a post from rohanaka since last October, nor fxreyman since last November. That's only a few months so perhaps no great concern.
On the positive side I became concerned when AndyM108 who was/is quite the movie nut, and used to post quite regularly suddenly stopped posting I think in Oct. of 2016. Then over a year later I saw a post from him in Nov. 2017. And then not again until mid April this year. So I am thinking that Andy must be alright, and perhaps he just has better things to do with his time than make posts here. At least I am hoping so.

Lord only knows for sure, but until I find out something different I am choosing to believe that about DGF as well.
Maybe he won the lottery. Or met this hot number at the library (or at his knitting class) and fell madly in lust, or love, or some such.
Anyway, he is off doing something more constructive or adventurous with his life than dwelling here everyday.
At least that is what I want to believe! ;):)

WTH????????????? I checked the schedule last night and didnt see that. GREAT.

I didn't catch the beginning, and wasn't aware that Irene Dunne played Victoria until the end credits.
I enjoy historical dramas and this was a good one.

I did DVR the movie, and glad because it didn't show up ON-DEMAND and I don't recall ever seeing it before.

I have teased with you in a few posts in various threads... I know that you have written that i am forgiven, but perhaps I can make amends by burning a copy of this little gem for you?

If so, just send me a PM.
If not, I have checked and the DVD is available here
