I don't think it's the original. In the 1970's I use to wear L'interdit and I also wore Le De ( not at the same time) LOL. Recently I took a whiff of L'interdit at a dept. store, and it did not bring back memories of the original. I could never decide which perfume I liked better, both were very beautiful. So many of the perfumes I wore years ago are either no longer available or are bad copies of the original. It such a shame, I think most perfumes just aren't as beautiful as they use to be. so many just smell the same. I wish I had kept all the bottles of the originals I had.
Sometimes the acuity of our "sniffers" changes with age.

Some folks I know will say that the food that they used to really enjoy, no longer tastes the same as it used to.
I am not a connoisseur of perfumes, so I really don't know, perhaps the industry is trying to economize by using cheaper artificial chemicals as opposed to real floral extracts. That wouldn't surprise me a bit either.

Well that explains it.

Yes, I did. But only after I became fascinated by the movies I saw by his director son as a kid.
When I later developed an appreciation for art I discovered the connection.
Very talented family.
The question I posed was rhetorical. But I am glad that it elicited such erudite responses.

LIFE WITH FATHER (1947)
Agree 100% with both Sepia and Laffite about this thoroughly enjoyable, wonderfully addictive, family movie. It is one of those that I never tire watching again and again.
Would have loved to have seen the original stage play, but I cannot imagine a better cast than the 1947 film adaptation. And wasn't teeny Liz just so delightful to watch?
It was this movie that inspired me to read the book (and other reflective writings) by Clarence Day Jr.
Thanks Lawrence and Tom for bringing up SWAMP WATER (1941) directed by Jean Renoir and based on the 1941 novel by Vereen Bell. Love watching (re-watching) that movie as well. Something about the atmosphere and rural dynamics strikes a folksy chord with me and I find myself thinking about my grandparents. Dana Andrews accent (as that of Gary Cooper in Sergeant York) are so authentic, and their acting so sincere, it makes the characters all the more believable. Same with the always great (on screen) personas of Walter Brennan. There was a later remake by a different title, which also featured Walter Brennan in the same role and a young Jeffrey Hunter playing the part that Andrews portrayed.
I liked that one too, but only 'cause it makes me think about the original film which is priceless.Jean Renoir, the name sounds like that of a French Master Painter doesn't it?
Well, IMO he was no less a master artist when it came to "painting pictures" in cinema. I've yet to see one of his films that I did not appreciate and enjoy.Along the "simple country folk" lines of Swamp Water, is another (under appreciated) film by Jean Renoir THE SOUTHERNER (1945).
A family film which realistically depicts the rustic lifestyle and hardships of a simple farmer and his family trying to make a living in the south.
I thought this was actor Zachary Scott's finest (and most endearing) performance. Like Andrews in Swamp Water, he was believably authentic and sincere in the role. And the supporting cast was equally wonderful.
Betty Field as the "rock solid" wife, Beulah Bondi (forever cast in roles beyond her age) as the insufferable granny, J. Carrol Naish as the begrudging neighbor, Norman Lloyd as the jealous hand, and Charles Kemper as the faithful friend from the "city"... the entire cast seemed made to order.
This film was so authentic in its depiction, one can almost taste that possum stew!TEXAS (1941), as Lawrence stated, is nothing really special as far as westerns go. But I enjoy it to catch an early screen appearance of two of my favorites at their most attractive best, William Holden and Glenn Ford. It's good to see Texas if only to contrast how far these two young actors were able to go with their respective acting careers.
Also enjoy seeing affable Edgar Buchanan in his pre Petticoat Junction days as a deceitful heavy and bad guy.Now I've got a yen to dig into my "collection" and re-watch all of these movies. Thanks guys!

Agreed. Can you imagine the outcry if TCM did this sort of thing on the regular TV channel?
Yet they behave as if because it's streaming to an ON-DEMAND audience that they (we) don't deserve the same QA promise fulfilment of "Complete and Uncut...."

INDIGNATION (2016)
A sensitive young Jewish atheist introvert reflects on the series of events that lead to his dying during the Korean War. His relationships with his family, and with a beautiful but disturbed and fragile WASP girl. And losing his college deferment that ultimately makes him eligible for the draft.
This rather serious bittersweet romdram had few moments of levity but managed to hold my attention throughout. The plot premise is that life is full of twists and turns and assorted forks in the road, involving numerous little choices that can have life altering decisive impacts.
Though I liked this film I realize that it is Not for everyone.
Written, produced, and directed by James Schamus, making his feature directorial debut, and based on Philip Roth's 2008 novel of the same name.

I dunno.....my friend and his ex married in '72, just a couple of months after me and MY ex hitched.
Sepiatone
Well, unless my ex was a bigamist at that time, I guess it had to be a different doppelganger....
Kinda funny how the genetic code seems to repeat itself in unrelated families.
I've had a lot of screen crushes in my time.
Had a bad yen for Hedy when I was a kid. And fell badly for any sweet young thing that approximated her.
And in junior high there was this girl who could have been the much younger sister, or daughter look-alike of Elizabeth Taylor. I was so ga ga about her that I became speechless whenever she looked in my direction.
And ordinarily I was the bold type that never seemed to have any issues about just strolling up and talking with any girl. Not so with that one (and a few others)...
Now that I think about it, it seems like whenever I was seriously attracted to some young thing, I would get all self conscious and embarrassed (and my body would begin to make these "funny" uncontrollable sounds).
I think that is why I took to drama in H.S., as a way to put on a character face and just pretend that I was Errol Flynn or some dashing ne'er do well. So when I was rejected (as I was on numerous occasions) I could pretend that it wasn't me but rather Brando or Errol that they just didn't appreciate.

ANOTHER SNAKE PIT ON WATCH TCM ON-DEMAND!!!
FIFTH time I've re-edited AND Re-posted this thread.
PLEASE READ IT BEFORE YOU MAKE ANOTHER DECISION TO DELETE IT!
THE SNAKE PIT (1948) which TCM broadcast last Monday evening (3/5/2018) but didn't make available for ON-DEMAND viewing until late in the evening of Friday, 3/9/2018 (4 days later) allowing an ON-DEMAND viewing window until 3/13/2018 (maybe 4 Full days???) was not only belatedly listed, but when one actually attempts to watch it they will sadly discover that there is ONLY 11.33 MIN there to view, and after subtracting Dave Karger's INTRO (1.46 MIN), and THEN at 10.35 MIN, Dave Karger's OUTRO, that leaves ONLY about 8.5 MIN OF ACTUAL MOVIE!!!THE SNAKE PIT runs approx. 108 min, so this time TCM has cut off about 100 min of the remaining movie!!!
Last month (Feb. 2018) TCM Cut THE CHAMP in half. The month prior (Jan. 2018) they cut a third off of WINGS OF DESIRE. In Dec. 2017, they cut a few minutes off the end of another movie reported on these boards....
Same has occurred in previous months (and years), though until recently I wasn't aware that this has turned into a MONTHLY REPEAT ISSUE! And that is only the movies that I (and a few others here) have actually caught and attempted to post here about!!!I don't understand Why it appears to be so difficult for persons at TCM to actually monitor their own streaming and ON-DEMAND output!
Regardless, This is NOT a good practice model and only serves to continually frustrate and alienate TCM viewers.

FOURTH time I re-posted that thread.
I edited it down to where TCM appears to be almost "blameless" regarding incompetence that causes these things to happen over and over again. So why don't you behave like a "responsible" Moderator and forward this concern to whomever you sometimes do at TCM and see if they will do anything about it.
You know, you can check these things out for yourself and confirm validity. You do have a PC. You do have net access. I presume that you also have a subscription with your TV provider that includes TCM. So why don't you start working with us instead of against us. You don't really have to DELETE our entire threads and posts like you do. But when you do feel such an overwhelming compulsion to do so, Why not at least "act like an adult" and give "us" the courtesy of some sort of explanatory comment.... is that too much to ask for?
I am going to re-post that thread a FIFTH time. Please read it AND THEN DO NOT delete it, as I am sure that even You will be able to see and agree, there is Nothing in that thread that should deem it worthy of Deletion.
Unless the act of commenting on anything that doesn't work as it should regarding TCM is now forbidden to post about here? -

I got an email stating you made a post about the itchy finger (which cracked me up) and now I see it isn’t there so perhaps this is the one you’re referring to or did they delete yet another? Who are these “moderators” anyway? Do they even have any real connection with TPTB?
Sorry you didn’t get to see your movie. I tried for a week to watch “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, as it is one I haven’t seen yet but all I kept getting was an error and the choice to either “retry” or “cancel”. Yippee. It was never watchable at least not for me. I bet they would blame it on the Fire Stick even though all other apps work just fine. For the most part anyway Lol
Ahhh, so you must have this thread in "auto follow" mode.
Yeah, the Mod here has a predilection for deleting posts and threads on these boards without any explanation.
Deleted several of mine from this very thread. And we are now "dueling" over another thread of mine that he or she has deleted four times (and counting) since yesterday. It has happened before.
"Who Are They?"
Probably persons not much different than you or I, except that they have agreed to accept a position (likely uncompensated) as a "Moderator."
Generally Moderators follow some sort of standard protocol but they are from time to time required to exercise some sort of discretion. I have No idea what the moderator "guidelines" are for these boards, and just how much individual discretion is left up to them. "We", as posters have our own set of guidelines to follow here as well, and under ordinary circumstances (on most boards) Moderators generally do not act unless those guidelines have been flagrantly violated. Most mods will also generally "warn" a poster regarding any such "abuse" and when they do intervene in any capacity will provide some explanatory comment. However I do not see that happening much of late on these boards. There used to be a "team" of moderators on these boards, collectively referred to as "Moderator1." Not sure how many (or few) there are these days...
"Do they even have any real connection with..." Anyone at TCM?
It appears that "they" have minimal direct contact beyond the ability to forward our (or their) concerns to someone, somewhere, within the TCM "chain of command."
On some occasions the Moderator(s) here have informed posters that someone at TCM is aware of certain problems and are working to resolve them. Too many other times we receive no response at all. And many posters (including myself) have used every avenue of communication available to us here (email, phone calls, snail mail, etc.) to actually contact someone at TCM regarding questions or concerns, but I am not aware that any of us have ever received anything (other than an occasional non-specific generic response) for our efforts.
"Sorry you didn’t get to see your movie"
Well, as Alfred Hitchcock has been quoted, "It's only a mooovvviee." And it's not like one that I haven't seen before, or have alternate access to. My beef is that there appears to be a complacent non-professional attitude from those at TCM over their highly promoted and sadly dysfunctional streaming "products." I have no complaints about the regular TV service. But as a fan of TCM I am embarrassed when asked to comment to anyone about TCM's streaming "features" and their host of "apps." I would really like to see them get their act together for once and all.
I am sorry that you are experiencing ongoing conflict issues with your Firestick and TCM. I don't have one so I can be of no real help to you about that. But I can share this, I was able to rewatch “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and I consider it a very good (albeit, edited down) Tennessee Williams screen adaptation. All involved delivered sterling performances and if you have never seen it (or would like to see it again) may I suggest visiting your local public library. If they do not have it on their shelves, you can make an inter-library loan request for the DVD (and Williams' play as well, if you like to read).
And Thank you for your reply (to my deleted post) -

And I too, never met my "bio-dad". Only saw old photos of him from the '40's. But according to my brother, who went to live with him a few years back in the '60's, I didn't miss out on very much.

Hmmmm, she did remarry like 3 or 4 more times after me....

Was your friend A "Louse" too?
It seems like some people, that never learn from their first mistake (or 2, or 3, or...), just continue to repeat themselves. They seldom change themselves and develop a habit of remarrying the same "type" over and over again, and incurring the same results.
Wish I had at least an old photo to look at. I sometimes wonder if I "looked" like him, or not.
I may not have missed out on much either, but I would have at least liked an opportunity to find that out for myself.
My mom told me so many conflicting stories ("lies") about the circumstances surrounding my conception, and afterward, that I never knew what (if any of it) was "true."
The only thing that I know she said truthfully about it was when I was a kid and she'd get PO'd at me about something and call me a "little bastard!"
She must have shared that bit of knowledge with my ex, as I heard her call me the same thing.

I am somewhat ambivalent these days about TCMs 31 Days of Oscar.
When it was first initiated I was quite grateful for it, as it granted me an additional opportunity to re-watch (and DVR) a lot of my old favorites. And they always included a "premier" or two (that they sadly never seem to rebroadcast).
But as several long-time posters here have frequently bemoaned, they are sure to show many of the same "Oscar" films year after year, with little variance. So I can understand why some would consider "Oscar month" to be a time to take a vacation from watching so much (too much) TCM. And there is nothing wrong with that.
But I am still reminded that there are always "new" viewers coming to TCM that may have never seen these movies (or not yet seen them so often to grow tired of them). So for them, I am willing to "grin and bear it."
Actually, I don't really mind seeing my favorites again and again. And for some "31 Days..." is the only time that TCM broadcasts them. And I am aware that my favorites may not be the same as someone else's favorites (and vice versa) so I adopt a "live and let live" attitude regarding TCM during that time, and generally all the time.
Though there are a few movies (quite a few actually) that TCM has rarely shown (like once or twice in 24 years) or not at all, that I really would like to see more of... during any time of the year.-

Well, can't think of any actress Mom resembled or who resembled her, but my STEPFATHER always reminded me(in many ways) of VICTOR JORY. But not in voice.

Sepiatone
Well, never having ever known or even seen a picture of my father, I have no idea what he looked like???
But since I grew up with familial feelings toward my favorite stars, I always noticed when anyone I grew up with bore any sort of a resemblance to them.
I thought my future ex-wife (at the time) looked a lot like a young Susan Hayward.
That is, before she transformed herself into the Wicked Witch of the West
Just kidding, she was a sweet kid. We were both really young and stupid about a lot of things (and likely me way more than her)...

That was it, THE RESTLESS GUN, Thanks Tom.
So he just faded off the screen to the more lucrative "back end" of the camera (so-to-speak). That is nice to know!
Sorry to hear about that accident.
But nice to hear that he was a such a sharp and well rounded person in real-life, and that his fellow actors thought kindly about him.
Thank you for the insight.

I'm sure that it's some variant of a click-spam scam, where the spam needs the appearance of being viewed for payout to occur - but I can't help but think that amount paid the per-spam must be incredibly tiny (fractions of a penny for each). Even if automated, you'd need several metric shedloads of the stuff to pay for the electricity/net connectivity consumed by your farming attempts. Mind you, the naughty people behind this are probably not beyond hacking into someone else's servers to achieve their aims, what with them being naughty people & so forth.
Well, they certainly are very naughty. And deserve to be soundly spanked for their persistent intrusions here and for being so naughty as trying to trick their employers out of a dime with their bogus "likes".
In spite of using several different "names" here, I've a feeling that it's really only one guy (or gal) doing all this. They must be incredibly sharp (tech savvy wise), as they have this whole thing so well automated that they can manage to get some sort-of worthwhile pay-off. And it wouldn't surprise me at all that their overhead for all this naughtiness is zero. Who knows how many other sites this person hammers, but TCM must certainly be one of the very the easiest for them to perform their naughtiness. -
It seems like I remember watching John Payne in a western TV series when I was a kid (as a gunfighter or cowboy). Something along the line of those half hour shows like Wanted Dead or Alive, or The Bounty Hunter (not sure if that title is correct, the one with Steve McQueen and a sawed off winchester).
I remember being kinda surprized at how long the guy has been on the screen. He played that affable minor role in Dodsworth, back in the '30s. Tried his hand as a song and dance man a bit, and did a few tough guy noirs and a couple as a swashbuckler action type. And even performed well in a few sentimental romdram pieces. He had the looks of a leading man, played support to a several better known leading men (like Ty Power), and opposite more than a few stunning leading ladies. He was never an unrecognizable character actor type and certainly managed to stay active for a long time. But somehow never quite found his chops in any specific genre.
It seems like he just sort-of faded away. But thankfully I always recognize him whenever I see him in anything, and always am able to remember his name (at least so far).-

I just noticed that all of these Bot SPAM threads are showing up already "Viewed" from 1 to 6 or more times... Probably by another Bot, because nobody here can click and look at them that fast...

So I'm thinking that Spammers use this site (because it is so easy to SPAM here) and rack up a lot of Bogus views to their SPAM threads Before they are deleted from the board, and submit those numbers to whomever is paying them to spam, as if they are getting a lot of attention to whatever the hell it is that they are trying to promote or sell, or whatever.
What a SPAM SCAM that is?

Wow, is that a first here?

If the thread was "DELETED" by the Mod (accidently or not) and sent to the "cornfield" does that mean that there's a whole slew of our deleted threads and posts out there too? Layin around in some sort of thread purgatory limbo?
Or maybe there is a time limit or window (sorta like the "golden 15 minutes" with ACLS) within which a thread can be revived if the Mod so decides to retreive it, before it heads "into the light"?
Do you think if we "repent" and "pray" real hard to the Mod god(s) here that maybe Lorna's and Speedracer's, and all of those other vanished threads can be somehow resurrected? Would that be a miracle or what?
Might even turn some of us into "believers" if that happened... -
Wish I could help ya DJ, but I only use a PC when streaming anything from TCM.
I will share this though, no freezing (at this time) using a PC (but no apps either), so maybe it can at least be narrowed down to just an android app conflict that you are experiencing.
Hopefully someone who's using the android app (and not feeling too jilted to reply here) will cross check at their end and let you know?

I did, and I was getting a little anxious for awhile wondering when Amy was going to say something about her family being killed for standing up and doing the right thing and explaining that is why she became a Quaker... I hadn't watched this flick for like 10 years or so, and for a little while I began to wonder if I'd somehow confabulated that whole scene. Then she was up in Helen's room and said it to her. Whew! I felt vindicated.
I'd forgotten just how good this movie really was.
Anyhoo, was just wondering if you re-watched it like you said, and if you are still thinking the same way about it or not?
If I remember correctly, you or someone else brought up similar questions in a thread about High Noon a few years ago???

You know, out of all the years I have often re-watched this film, this is the first time that I realized that the title was NOT The Strange Case of Doctor X, but rather Rx

EDIT
Never mind.
I just realized that I was confusing myself with two different movies:
Doctor X (1932) from Warner Bros. with this Doctor Rx one made in 1942 from Universal.
They both starred Lionel Atwill but I couldn't place former "Stooge" brother Shemp Howard, so I looked it up and realized my mistake.
