I would have to say singer - I can't recall a film of hers I've seen where she didn't sing. By the way are there any? Are they any good?

Thanks 80, I will. I have heard of this film but have not seen it yet. I think Curtis is well suited for comedies.

Things We Would Never Know Without the Movies
bggalaxy replied to ladymirabelle45's topic in General Discussions
I too am not sure this is mention already but homes, offices, etc. in the 30's, 40's, and 50,s had 10 ft. high doors 16 ft high walls and no ceiling. -
As far as Dean goes I think it was the the fact that he did three impactful roles then suddenly died that has brought his legendary/cult status - not great actor. As far as his star/acting status it seems to be rated on what could have been after the performance in Giant not on what he had done. Just my thought.

Another late notice, one of my favorite Lombard films, "In Name Only" is showing this evening. You can't miss with Grant, Lombard, Francis, and Coburn. The end where Lombards .... just kidding prof-lol

I don't have an answer for you, but a few years back there was a large coffe table book filled with the nose art of these flying fortress'. The were hundreds if not a thousand of the noses shown and I believe in color. I saw this in a Barns Noble store. I hope this helps. This book also listed the fate of most of these planes. I was amazed that so many never made it back to base.

I'm on the fence with Tony Curtis. I liked him The Defiant Ones, Some Like It Hot, and The Great Race but not much more than that. (Some recommendations of his stuff i might want to see - would be appreciated). I thought he could not handle historical parts that well (Spatacus, The Vikings, etc)

Dumb question here. What constitutes under-rated? Half the actors listed here thus far are highly regarded IMHO. Sure some my have not been winners of statues but are on the A+ list in their profession - some are even legends (Stanwyck). I said John Payne was under-rated earlier because the few "A" movies I have seen him in - I thought he was very good to excellent. It seems he never had many opportunities to do more and spent his time as leads in the minors. It's hard for me to say a character actor (Rains & others) was under-rated because they are highly recognized by face and name for their work. Now a character actor whos face you see all the time but may not know there name may fit here. (you know that actor who plays Spencer Tracy's buddy in... or The actor who was the girlfrend of Ginger Rogers in...) So, it would be kind of neat to know what Under-rated means to you.

Irene Dunne in I Remember Mama, Life With Father, My Favorite Wife, & Penny Serenade. Wow I didn't realize she played so many mothers I've enjoyed until I went to post here. Betsy Drake in Room For One More

Just a note on Audrey Hepburn and her singing in My Fair Lady. I saw versions of her doing the singing before the over dub and she did a really good job - I was shocked she could sing so well. I agree with Breakfast at Tiffany's but I'm not sure if it was her, or the story. Never cared for that film.

Need help with the name of an old actor

Oskar Homolka (I Remember Mama, Ball of Fire, etc) -
Just got back on to the computer this today. It's odd, last night my wife suggested we watch "The Mating Season". We were wondering what ever happened to the actress that played Betsy. We didn't know her name at the time but recognized her face. Then today I visit the sight here and find out she has past away. It is sad timing. I am definately going to keep my eye open for the films listed below and any others that may be listed later.

Hey moviejoe, I look at Hanks as a comedic actor who made a very successful jump into dramatic roles. With his start in Bosom Buddies, Splash, Big, Bachalor Party, Volunteers, etc. Nothing in Common with Gleason was his first shot to show he had what it would take to do meatier roles. I may be wrong in this view.

Well HK, it seems you found a favorite recent film that is a classic already. Isn't widescreen great! This was one of the first films I went out to buy when we got our DVD player cuz I just had to have it in WS. This film touches you inside from all directions. The women getting a taste of life outside the boarders of status quo. The telegrams being delivered. The Strathairn characters passion for the league and the women involved. Hank's characters finding direction. But most of all the ending with the former players (real and fictious) and that great song wrapping everything together. One of my favorites.

I too am being drawn to the "Silent Side" lol. Years past, silent film did not grab my attention in the first few minutes. Like most of my viewing if my attention can't be had in a few minutes I move on. Today that has changed. Silent films do grab my attention and are enjoyable to watch no matter the condition of the film. I am sure this is because I have more knowledge of the times and the actors involved.

Welcome! Believe me when I say you don't have to be an expert here just a fan. I found these fine folks here over a year ago and always learn something about the classics and not so classic everyday. Some advice: when you step on someone toes they will cry and moan but it will be all forgotten by the next thread. That's what make everyone here so (as they say in the oldies) SWELL!

Searching for the name of a movie...Please help!!!
bggalaxy replied to klassic248's topic in Information, Please!
Hey Klassic welcome. I can't help you either. Your desciption sounds like it might be a fun movie. When about would it have been made? When does it take place? Is it color or black & white? As far as ending don't worry about it - it won't ruin anything for me. It is clear the wallflower would have shined at the end. You post as you wish. -
I'm not sure I could choose being from different eras. I like them both for their time. Now if the choice was Abbott & Costello or Martin & Lewis I think I would choose Martin & Lewis.
-
I would say Dietrich. There are only a few films i have that feature either stars, but I just get a kick out of Dietrich in Destry Rides Again and enjoyed her in No Highway in the Sky.
-
As for someone being under-rated i tend to think of stars such as Vera-Ellen (from the other thread) as being under-rated. Not someone who has had 5 oscar nods. Another dancer would be Donald O'Conner. John Payne may be an actor that I thought deserved better roles and starring opportunities.
