  1. > {quote:title=talkietime wrote:}{quote} And how much does TCM receive per subscriber?

I doubt TCM would ever give out that information because they have to negotiate with each cable company and satellite service, but judging from what I've read about other channels, we should be thinking in pennies and not dollars.

I've been on the Cinefest staff since the first one. If anybody from the boards want to say hello just ask for Mark at the registration table. I'm usually around there or in the dealer rooms between films. It's going to be the best one yet. Looking forward to seeing everybody.

Let's keep our fingers crossed. DirecTV's newest satellite was successfully launched a few months ago and has been in the testing stage. According to a satellite forum I go to, they should be announcing what new channels will added very soon. When TCM goes HD on DirecTV, that's when I'll seriously consider getting an HD TV.

  4. > {quote:title=HollywoodGolightly wrote:}{quote} Did you ever watch Disney's "Zorro" as well? I bought that last December but haven't had time to watch those yet.

I didn't watch ZORRO regularly when it first came on. I don't recall why, perhaps in those one TV set, pre-VCR, days there was something else on opposite it that our family watched. When the Disney Channel first came on cable, they ran the series and that's where I caught up with ZORRO. It was good fun, but I still prefer Davy Crockett. Gosh, I wish I still had that lunchbox, they're worth big bucks now.

  5. Not only did I have a '**** skin cap, but went to school everyday with my "official" Davy Crockett lunch box. That was really cool for an 8 year-old boy back then.

You should check out good ol' Davy on DVD. I think it's part of the Disney Treasures series. Netflix must have it and probably your local library does too. Of course, this might be a bad week to try, what with all of us "boomers" lining up for it.

  6. > {quote:title=clore wrote:}{quote} why even keep a full screen copy on hand?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that all of the Turner networks are housed in the same building and share the same technical facilities. If that's the case, I can understand the need to have an uncut, letterboxed version for TCM and an edited, full screen version for TNT or TBS. I imagine they have a lot of films there with more than one version on the shelf. Mistakes happen. Still, having it happen twice in about a week is a little much and hopefully it's being addressed.

  7. HBO's new 10-part mini-series about the war in the Pacific started last night. I thought it was very well made and looked pretty expensive. No doubt it will end up as a DVD set. Some folks who grew up with the war films of the 1940's may find it a little too "realistic" (language and gore) for their tastes. The first episode was pretty busy introducing all the characters, but it got me hooked and I'm looking forward to the next episode.

    > Too bad the beginning and end of this film are in poorer shape than the rest of the movie.

I recall reading that one of the reasons for such a delay in releasing The Bowery Boys films was that Warner was trying to locate 35mm prints for a couple of the films that they only had in16mm. I guess this was one of them. Still, it's better than not seeing it at all.

    > It's not on ABC where I live in the US. Not on ABC east or ABC west or ABC Family on Directv.

    > Maybe it was on earlier in the day when kids were awake.

I saw it on DirecTV and it was on the ABC Family Channel from 8-10pm. I know it was that channel because for the 10 or 15 minutes I watched they had their stupid logo plastered on the screen the whole time.

  10. Admittedly, since I rarely watch movies on commercial channels, I don't keep close track of what's scheduled on most of them, so when our grandkids were just here and I walked into the room and they were watching SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, I thought it was the DVD. Much to my surprise it was on the ABC Family Channel. I hadn't heard that any of the Disney animated classics were going to be released to TV. Of course, that is a Disney-owned channel so maybe that's as far as will go. Naturally, the 83 minute film was running in a two hour time slot so there were lots of commercials.

I wonder if this opens the door to other Disney classics being shown. Not that I would be interested in watching them in a commercial format, but perhaps somewhere down the road TCM might get a shot at them. One can only hope.

  11. Studios use to be very secretive when it came to how they made their films. They never wanted it to be know that their stars used stunt doubles or that singing was often dubbed by somebody else. Probably the same was true with miniatures. They hoped the public actually thought they were built full-sized.

  12. Although the boxes may seem like a simple cheap box, over the years since your first one, there have been many technical changes that make the boxes cost more. That's one of the reasons they extended the commitment period, it takes them longer to make back the higher cost of the receiver.

If you decide to cancel, after your commitment has ended, and they want the receivers back they'll send you prepaid boxes for the return. The return won't cost you anything.

Rather than getting into long discussions on the forum, you'd be much better just to call them at 1-800-531-5000 and one of their customer service people will be happy to answer your questions and hopefully put your mind to rest that your not getting ripped off.

  13. Welcome to the boards. The degree of the problem can vary from TV to TV. I don't believe that there is a standard as to how much overscan is allowed. Sets from various manufacturers overscan differently. Some more, some less than others. Chances are that anyone with two or more sets of different brands can notice a difference.

  14. > {quote:title=primosprimos wrote:}{quote} > Hopefully DirectTV is a better company than Cablevision.

Cablevision doesn't serve this area so I don't have any first hand experience, but from everything I've read on satellite/cable forums it's one of the worst when it comes to customer service.

Having had a monopoly in most communities for decades, many cable companies have an arrogant "take it or leave it" approach with customers. That's one of the reasons that so many people have been leaving cable for alternate services like satellite or FIOS.

As for DirecTV, it's always rated very high when it comes to customer service and in 11 years I've always found it to be so.

  15. Lynn, I'm doing the same thing. Last summer, I cleaned out the attic and finally tossed three original receivers I got back in '99. Of course, they were so old that they really were obsolete. I called Direct TV to see if they still would work and the CSR told me they hadn't been functional in several years.

    > I am a long-time DirecTV subscriber and it seems to me that it used to be that you owned the box outright in the old days.

    >

    > I guess you can look at it as the $99 being part of the lease but it sure feels like you are buying the box and then still having to pay a monthly lease fee. At least with cable you don't have to pay $99 up front for a box you don't own.

I too signed up in 1999 and back then they didn't have any lease plans and you bought and kept the boxes, but remember, those where just simple cheap receivers not expensive DVRs. When they first introduced DVRs the prices were several hundred dollars and folks balked at that so they came up with the lease plan. They don't publicize it, but you can still buy them outright if you want, all you need to do is call DirecTV, but it's going to cost a lot more than $99.

As for paying $99 up front, it's no different than leasing a car. You usually have to make an up front payment and then pay a monthly lease fee too. It just keeps the monthly payment lower. A lot of cable systems are starting to charge up front fees now for equipment too (especially HD). The one here just started in January.

They might as well have them back when we're done, after all, the DVRs are absolutely worthless if they aren't hooked up to DirecTV and won't work as a free-standing DVR or with cable or Dish. A lot of times, if it's an older model, they'll just tell you to throw it out instead of returning.

As a long-time customer, you should call them with your concerns and they may give a few months of a premium channel free or something else to help offset the cost. I got a deal recently. I upgraded the old standard receiver we still had in one of the bedrooms to a DVR and for being a "good" customer who pays his bills on time they didn't charge me the $99 and shipped it by Fed-Ex for free. They also told me to trash the old receiver.

  17. > {quote:title=hamradio wrote:}{quote} I'm trying to understand the "Kill Bill" poster, very strange - I don't get it.

I don't know, but THE BLUE FAIRY AND PINOCCHIO has me scratching my head. I somehow don't think it's for a re-release of the Disney film.

  18. Columbia has released OLIVER! at least two or three of times on DVD. The one I have is the "Thirtieth Anniversary Tribute Edition" and it's complete with Overture, Intermission, entre'acte and exit music. One of the versions was released as part of a series of children's movies, so it's likely they didn't include them in that version figuring that kids would get bored sitting through just music. It's possible that's the one you have.
