I saw IF I HAD A MILLION last year at a film society screening, it's a great film. One for the "don't miss" list.

If you're in a position to change to satellite then tell Comcast to "shove off" and make the switch. Both DirecTV and Dish offer free equipment, free installation and prices that I'd bet are better than what you're paying now. And best of all you'll have TCM.
Other than that get active and start a campaign to get TCM. You know, start petitions, get folks writing letters to the editor (I'll bet there are a lot of others who want TCM), get a group to picket the cable company and make sure you invite the local newspaper and TV stations to cover it. The more fuss you make the better chance of getting it.
Good luck!

> {quote:title=DougieB wrote:}{quote} The thing that might make it dificult to modernize is the arranged-marriage angle.
I don't think that's as true as you may think. Even today there are certain religious and cultural groups around the world where arranged marriages are pretty much the norm. We don't hear a lot about it, but it happens right here in this country. The fact that she came into this country illegally would certainly be relevant today. I think there would need to be some changes in the book, but the major change would be an updating of the musical production numbers.

I look at them now and them, especially the UK schedule.

My only actual experience with a foreign TCM channel was a few years ago when my wife and I were on a tour of Ireland and one of the hotels carried TCM's UK channel. What little I saw of it seemed pretty much like ours. As it happened, they were showing MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS and between that and the next film, STRIKE UP THE BAND, were promos and other fillers as you would expect to see here.
Although, we were in Ireland for almost two weeks, that was the only hotel we stayed at that carried TCM. My wife considered that a good thing, she said otherwise I'd have never left the hotels.
One thing TCM has to deal with in other countries is government censorship. Many countries, especially in Asia and Africa, are very strict as to what can be shown, not only in regards to sex and violence, but for political and religious reasons.

I've always liked FLOWER DRUM SONG, but my only complaint is that it was all filmed in a studio and not on location. While the Grant Avenue street set was pretty well done, it still looked like an indoor set. Of course, I have that same complaint about two of my other favorites BRIGADOON and SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS.
Sure, by today's standards it was pretty much a stereotypical portrayal of Asian-Americans, but I will give them credit for using real Asian actors instead of Caucasians in makeup.

Lely, welcome to the boards. You need to look at TCM's scheduling over the long run not just one scheduled showing. Usually TCM will repeat films and schedule them at different times and days. PANIC IN THE YEAR ZERO has been shown numerous times at all different parts of the day and night.
You have to remember that TCM runs 24 hours a day and in four different time zones so when a film is running on in the east at midnight it's only 9pm on the west coast. The other thing to keep in mind is that TCM always shows films uncut, so any with mature content, be it sexual, graphic violence or strong language have to be scheduled late at night so they don't start too early in the west. That's why most of the TCM Underground films start at 2am eastern so that it's 11pm out there.
I hope this helps you understand TCM's scheduling a little bit.

Sara, Welcome to the boards.
The 2010 DVD catalog is published sometime in January so any orders already placed are "pre-orders" and will be shipped when it comes out.
Keep in mind that Now Playing subscriptions and merchandise sales are handled by outside companies and not TCM directly. I don't know what numbers you may have called, but for subscriptions it should be 1-800-TCM-1002 and for merchandise call 1-800-668-4344. Calling any other number will only delay things.
Trust me, nobody is ripping you off.
Happy New Year!

> {quote:title=HollywoodGolightly wrote:}{quote} ... is it my imagination or is this TCM campaign now starting earlier than ever?
I don't know, but it would make sense for TCM to start running it over the holidays. I'm sure that the Holmes marathon attracted a lot of people who may not be TCM regulars and it would be a chance to try and get them interested in TCM's next big event.

The Academy did present special miniature "Oscars" for an outstanding performance by a juvenile, but not on a yearly basis. The last one was presented in 1960 to Hayley Mills for POLLYANNA.

BLACK NARCISSUS is one of my favorite P&P films and because the OP specifically said "Catholic" I'll point out that the nuns in the film were actually Anglican nuns, not Roman Catholic.

Some computers will or you need to buy a multi-region DVD player. You won't find them at the neighborhood electronics store, but you can get them from amazon and other online sites.
-
While I can't recall which one, I know that one of the premium movie channels played it at least two or three times this year so if they have the rights to it locked up, TCM can't show it.
-
Well, actually no. The "calendar day" starts at midnight, but the "broadcast day" starts at 6am. It always has and is an industry standard. Just like in a factory the "work day" usually starts with the day shift at 7am or 8am, not the midnight shift.
While it makes sense, in this 24/7 world to have the "broadcast" day start at midnight, it really needs to be the whole broadcast industry that changes, not just TCM.

I'm afraid that TCM has spoiled me and I rarely watch any movie with commercial interruptions. I will watch A CHRISTMAS STORY on Christmas Eve, but it will be on DVD, not TBS. Still, a lot of people aren't bothered by the commercials and, like yourself, have made a tradition out of watching the marathon and that's just great. So enjoy and don't shoot your eye out kid. Merry Christmas!

Well, so much for my memory.
-
I always like THE WEREWOLF. Even though it was a low-budget B film, the fact that it was shot on location and not on some studio backlot added a lot to the atmosphere.
-
You should check out the three-disc DVD set. The third disc has a great documentary on the Cinerama Process. I can't recall if it specifically includes the restoration, but even if not, it's worth watching. If you aren't into buying DVDs, try your local library and they may have it. Just make sure you get the restored version and not the older version.

In the late 1960's I worked in the film department at a local TV station and in 1970 moved to a station in another city. Both of those stations had the pre-1948 Paramount package from MCA-TV. If I recall correctly, STATE OF THE UNION was in the package when I started at the first station, but was no longer in it when I moved to the second. I can't swear to it, but I'm thinking, by then, it was being distributed by National Telefilms Association (NTA). This would make sense because NTA was the distributor for IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and Capra could have made a distribution deal for both of them.
-
I think you'd have to ask each hotel, they make deals with the local cable company and choose what channels to carry. TCM has nothing to do with it.
-
Welcome to the boards. Since TCM has made a deal to show at least some of the pre-1948 Paramount films that are controlled by Universal, I think there might be a pretty good chance that MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW will show up sometime. It's finally being released on DVD in 2010 so maybe in conjunction with that.
-
I can't say specifically about DUEL OF THE TITANS, but in general, if a film has not had a commercial DVD release then it's has to be a bootleg. Buy at your own risk.
-
Welcome to the board. THE LEMON DROP KID, along with several other Bob Hope films were released on DVD in 2000 under the umbrella title "The Bob Hope Collection". It's out of print now, but amazon still has it, with new copies from $59.98 and used from from $29.99. That's for one film, not a whole set and that's a little pricey, but if you want it bad enough....
I seem to recall that the films are controlled by the Bob Hope estate and I doubt they'll be re-released on DVD again. Don't know if they sold well enough to end up on Blu-Ray.

> {quote:title=markbeckuaf wrote:}{quote} A month filled with GREAT Bogie films, many of the 30's and early 40's stuff, including some rarities...A month full of Capra films...many rarities from the silent and early talkie era....Nearly all of the Rathbone/Bruce Holmes series coming up on Christmas...
Yeah, and because they also tossed in a couple little seen Christmas films and a bunch of old favorites TCM programmers have the nerve to think it's a good month.
I guess we're all going to have to switch to that other classic film channel with the better film mix. Oh, wait a minute....THERE ISN'T ONE!
Thanks, TCM! It's been a great year.

I don't know where you live, but I can tell you that having to do what you are doing is _not_ normal. I live in upstate New York and we get lots of snow (as I write this, it's 10 degrees and snowing like crazy) and in the 11 years I've had DirecTV I've never once had a snow-related signal problem. It's not just me, none of my neighbors have had any either. I'm no expert, but it sounds like more of a technical problem such as your dish might be slightly out of alignment or a bad LNB. The snow just aggravates it.
There's a great satellite TV forum at [www.satelliteguys.us], maybe somebody there can help you out.
