  1. To Keithfromkc:

Films, like music, is SO universal. It's just not fun or fair to limit oneself to U.S. talents only.

I watched and enjoyed Ms. Beart in 8 WOMEN (everytime she was on screen, I kept seeing a "French" Angelina Jolie). Please give me a list (your faves) of her films. The lucky thing about living in New York, I can get my hands on ALL type of movies.

  2. katyscar11ett,

Ms. Lane was funny in ARSENIC & OLD LACE, and she gave good performances in THE ROARING 20S & SABOTEUR. Ive seen her in a couple of other films, but I always wanted to see her do the "bad girl" roles. That would've been interesting.

  3. Im a BIG Cagney fan!

Faves...THE PUBLIC ENEMY, THE ROARING 20S, ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES, WHITE HEAT, G MEN, THE BRIDE CAME COD, 13 RUE MADELEINE, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, MISTER ROBERTS & RAGTIME.

  4. My movie buff friends can't understand why Im not ga-ga over...

    CASABLANCA

Im a big Bergman & Rains fan, but to me, this movie is SO overrated. I guess, if you love Bogart, then this is the movie for you. This movie is Ingrid & Claude's most celebrated work (and ONE of their best), but it's not THE best.

    A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

I tried REAL hard to like this movie, but I couldn't. The stageyness, the drabness, the yelling & screaming, Leigh & Brando...all were too much of a downer.

    SOME LIKE IT HOT

I like Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe (in some movies), but Im not a Jack Lemmon fan. I have to admit, some scenes were cute, while others were yawn-worthy.

    DOUBLE INDEMNITY

I usually love classic film noirs, BUT this one annoyed the &*#@# out of me. Was it Stanwyck's ghastly blonde wig? Fred (always irritating) MacMurray? The cruel/dark/cynical/sarcastic storyline? The ONLY saving grace was Eddie G. (I love that guy)!

  5. 1. Myrna Loy & William Powell - elegant, charming, drunk & FUN-NEY.

    2. Cary Grant & pick a partner - the man was an equal opportunity performer.

    3. Bette Davis - her mannerisms, that quirky walk & those eyes made me LOL!

    4. James Cagney - see #3. Oh-boy could he throw a punch!

    5. Laurel & Hardy - they were sensitive & physical...a nice unique combination.

  6. On TCM, last night, I taped THE ROARING 20s, and that ending was so CAGNEY. He was one of the most exciting & entertaining actors. I always really cared about his troubled characters. I love ALL of his "gangtas" from THE PUBLIC ENEMY to WHITE HEAT. And the man was SO VERSATILE (dancing/singing). He's an icon!

  7. Top 5 ladies:

Ingrid Bergman - I love her voice, her eyes, her sincerity...heck I just love her.

Bette Davis - what a fantastic force.

Myrna Loy - great comedian, great lady (watching her films make me VERY happy).

Deborah Kerr - another foreign beauty who could act her little booty off.

Greta Garbo - like her swedish countrywoman (Ingrid), she was a lovely unique gift to Hollywood.

    Top 5 men:

    Cary Grant - numero uno...forever.

    James Cagney - so versatile.

Ronald Colman - nobody played "romantic/melancholy" like this gentleman.

Fred Astaire - "his feet" did the best acting in the world.

Edward G. Robinson - when he was good, he was excellent, but when he was bad...WATCH OUT.

  8. The Classic Era had its share of clunkers too.

Unfortunately, nowadays it "seems" to be the norm, and some of today's writers are just plain LAZY! They put out "inferior products" because they "think" we'll suck-it-up (and for a LONG time, we did)! Lately, moviegoers are getting smart, and staying home.

Fortunately, good movies are still in existence. You just have to look a little harder for them. Some are mainstream, some are independent, some are foreign, and some are hidden treasures.

  12. I totally agree with the Ingrid Bergman posters!

Ive watched NOTORIOUS many times, and I always find something new to love about this movie. Ingrid & Cary's chemistry together is truly timeless. I also adore them together in INDISCREET. They made elegance and sophistication look so effortless.

I haven't had this much fun watching a couple act together since Myrna Loy & William Powell.

  13. Pafjlk, I totally agree with your post!!

Im not a Bogart fan either, but he blossomed in Ingrid's presence.

Im a HUGE Cary Grant fan! NOTORIOUS is one of my ALL-TIME favorite films. Bergman & Grant lit-up-the-screen. Who knew "lack of communication & constant misunderstanding" could be so HOT!

On screen, Ingrid Bergman was one of the few actresses who made "vulnerable & down-to-earth" INTERESTING!

  14. NOTORIOUS is my favorite Hitchcock movie!

The cast is stellar, the suspense is thrilling, Ingrid & Cary are hot! Hot! HOT!!!!

Ive always been a BIG Ingrid Bergman fan, but Cary Grant really surprised me. This is the ONLY movie, Ive EVER seen him play such a dark, brooding & moody guy. When have we EVER seen him so bitter & jealous on screen?? To me, Ingrid was his most interesting, and compatible romantic leading lady. Together, they really blended into this timeless, earthy, sensual duo, and with Hitchcock's deft directing, Claude Rains, and Madame Konstantin's terrific performances this really is a classic masterwork!

  15. I would love to see a month salute to different european actresses. For my viewing pleasure I want a "whole day" of ...

Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, Marlene Dietrich, Simone Signoret, Deborah Kerr, Jeanne Moreau, Sophia Loren, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Nastassja Kinski, Isabelle Adjani, Anna Magnani, Liv Ullman, Juliette Binoche.

And the Brits, Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson, Glenda Jackson, Julie Christie, Maggie Smith & Wendy Hiller.

Also, how about a month salute to Ronald Colman? I want to see his silents and talkies.

  16. Faves...

YELLOW SKY - the earthy/sensual chemistry between Gregory Peck & Anne Baxter made this a BIG fave.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST - Henry Fonda had the coldest blue eyes in the Old West.

THE BIG COUNTRY - again Gregory Peck at his quiet sexy best, and this time Jean Simmons is along for the ride.

DESTRY RIDES AGAIN - Marlene Dietrich & barroom bawls make for a FUN time at the movies!

THE OX-BOW INCIDENT - classic western with a conscience.

SADDLE THE WIND - an underrated gem starring Robert Taylor, Julie London & John Cassavetes.

BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID - not one, BUT two sexy robbers.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON - ANY movie starring James Stewart, Henry Fonda & Gregory Peck gotta be good.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN - and they were MAGNIFICENT especially Yul Brynner.

BELLE STARR - the plot was ordinary, but the chemistry between Dana Andrews & Gene Tierney was smokin.

CALAMITY JANE - one of my all time favorite musical western. Doris Day rocked!
