HEY...Miss G!!! *The Body Snatcher*... OH MY GOLLY!!!!! (I think it is my NEW favorite for Boris Karloff... EVER!) :-) Delightfully CREEPY!!!!!!!!!!!! (and I mean that in a GOOD way!! ha) And PS... Boy, oh boy... talk about hitting both ends of the spectrum today w/ this movie and Happy Land... ha. I am feeling a bit... mentally "pulled apart" right now... (Sad but true... it wouldn't be the first time... and also sad but true... it likely won't be the last as well... ha.) Did I mention OH MY GOLLY???????? :-)
-
Hi there Miss Finnie, Miss Maven, (and little Miss Butterscotchie too), I finally sobbed my way through the rest of Happy Land... (OH.... what a misleading sort of title..ha) A very touching story. Very inspirational too. I thought it was a nice remembrance of an era that has been both idealized and also longed for (at least on my part) for its themes of family, commitment, and yes... even sacrifice. Or maybe rather a knowledge of what is truly worth living (and maybe even dying) for. I guess what I am saying about this little town (and its folk) is something close to what I think you referred to as well, Miss Maven... how it may simply represent the image so many folks have of small town life way back then. At any rate... I found it comfortingly sentimental. I also enjoyed all the intersting characters that passed through their lives. (the little old lady insisting on her "tonic" instead of vitamins, the one grouchy old man who only wanted LEW to fix his medicine, the two little boys in Rusty's kindergarten class, the lovely (yet shallow) Gretchen...oh and Old Ben... (did you notice that was Leigh Whipper from The OxBow Incident??) Speaking of that... Harry Morgan... wow. I was NOT prepared for him when he showed up. I thought that whole ending would go a totally different route. And WHAT a pup. If I am not mistaken... this film came out the same year as TOBI... but he looks FAR and AWAY so much younger and innocent (puppish, if you will) in this film. What a little fresh face... and yet JUST the right amount of sadness and "hungry for something better out of life".... all at the same time. When Frances gave him that big hug and a kiss at meeting him.... UGH!!!! My mom radar went into OVERDRIVE... great heaving wooshy eyed sobs... what can I say.. I am a sucker for those "mom" moments.. ha. Anyway... Just wanted to say THANKS again for bringing this one up. Maybe not a GREAT film... but a nice way to pass the time.. And PS... I have to say again... Hulu?? Who knew??? Pretty cool. Thanks again, Moira, for the link there. :-) Message was edited by: rohanaka

UGH! I just realized how late it is getting.. Gotta call it a night folks... chat w/ you later!! Happy trails, ya'all. :-)
-
wait till she uses your own arguments against you UGH!! We're already getting there... don't remind me.. ha. And... it is REALLY awful since she has learned to tell time. She knows the difference between a second and a minute... so her new thing lately is that if I tell her I will do such and such for her in a "minute" she will say something (with her smart little mouth) like.... "But mom.. can you do it in a SECOND... that is faster than a minute... because a minute is SIXTY seconds." Ha... Sometimes she is too smart for her own good. Usually after something like that, I have to reply... "Want to see how long a second can REALLY last... while you are sitting on your bed??" (It's hard to be six and try to rule the world... ha. ) :-) PS... April.. Now THAT would be a reality show worth watching!! HA! And I could just about guarantee that their movie reviews would be better than all the other ones you see on tv nowdays for sure.... ha. Message was edited by: rohanaka

There is NO winning an arguement w/ this kid either.. she will always find a way to bring the conversation back to HER way of thinking.. ha. (I don't know where she gets that either.... Grey Guy.... you sit down RIGHT now..ha)
-
That's our kidling HA... she is the free entertainment around our house. :-) And PS... she has a very "black and white" view of good and bad... (gee...Mr. Grey... I don't know where she gets that...ha) She HATED when I told her the name of the movie... Her: "Who's the bad man?" Me: "John Wayne." Her: "No.. I thought John Wayne is the good man. He's not bad" (ha... we had this same sort of chat when Three Godfathers was on too) Me: "No... he's not REALLY a bad man. He's just bad for a while... but he will start being good soon." Her: "Well who's the angel?" Me: "That lady in the long dress w/ the dark hair" Her: "Well THAT is not an angel dress" Me: "Well... she's not a REAL angel... they just call her that because she is good." Her: "Well... they should call it "The Good Woman and the Bad Man" then. Only what will they call him when he is not bad any more?" Me: "They will call him Quirt... that is his name in the movie.. Quirt Evans" Her: "Now THAT is a silly name.... they should not call him QUIRT. Why do they call him Quirt?" Me: "Why do I call you Hannah?" Her: "Because THAT is my name" (said w/ her little eyes rolling) Me: "So why DO they call him Quirt then?" Her: "Yeah... but QUIRT is a lot sillier name than Hannah" Me: "Not if you are John Wayne..." Her: "He should NOT be a bad man. He needs to be nice..." And so it went... Ha. Bronxie's mom has NOTHING on us.. :-)

Well speaking only for my little corner of the world... the KIDLING sure knows him when she hears him. The other day when Angel and the Badman came on... she was back in her bedroom playing... and the minute she heard the Duke's voice... she came a runnin'. And while she was still in the hall.. without ever seeing the screen... her little voice pipes up.... "HEY!!! Are we watching JOHN WAYNE tonight???" Watta kid!!! Ha. :-)
-
Do you still have this at the ready on your computer at work???? As I recall you once said it came in handy there... ha.

many of those "Duke-isms" have come in mighty handy http://www.aeonity.com/ab/soundboards/celebrity/john-wayne.php 5 across... 7 down!!! Ha!!!!!!

Hi there fxreyman... Thanks for your comments.... And I have to say... (and I will limit all this out of respect for those who might not agree w/ me) that I think a lot of the reason conservatives (at least nowdays) are treated so harshly in the entertainment industry is the same reason that Westerns get ignored as well. There is a mindset in our popular culture held by some people (especially many of those in Hollywood) that says if you are a conservative... you must be a "hick" or uneducated or unsophisticated.... or some combination of all three. And again... if that were true... then I would also likely be the ONLY Conservative on here as well... ha. (speaking again as an uneducated, unsophisticated hick... ha.) At any rate... I respect ANY person's right to their own opinion... politically or otherwise... but it does get VERY irritating to see so many present day actors behave in such a rude and disrespectful manner as they vehemently oppose anyone who may disagree with them. (And what's worse for me is the pervading mindset many of them also have that THEIR opinion seems to matter more in the great scheme of things... just because they are a celebrity) We are all entitled to our own opinions in this world... but we are NOT all entitled to browbeat, badmouth, and generally malign those who disagree with us. And sadly... that is what a LOT of the more vocal actors and entertainers nowdays seem to enjoy (perhaps on BOTH sides of the political fence) I find it all quite offensive. Ok... enough said about THAT... at least on my part.(and ps... I have no intent on debating politics w/ anyone on here... thanks anyway) Wayne is the greatest actor that ever lived (IMHO). If you look at his filmography, he was a star from 1939 to 1976. Almost thirty years after his death, he is still one of the most popular actors. And why is that? I think it is because his movies and the characters he has portrayed are genuinely most American. And his importance in the western genre can not be dismissed. If it wasn't for Ford and Wayne, the western would not be held up as high as it is now. My gosh, my golly!!! I love how you love John Wayne!!! ha. I still remember you telling that story about taking your future wife to see Hatari... ha. I don't know if I can call him the greatest actor that ever lived because that is such a subjective thing.... but he IS my most favorite actor ever... for all the reasons you listed and more. :-) Message was edited by: rohanaka

Aw Jackie... you are too nice to me... Ford was right - you can find the deepest meanings in the Westerns...... And they have cute dudes with unshaven faces Best of both worlds, isnt' it???? ha. :-)

Frank Grimes said: I was hesitant to watch Wayne because I thought he always played a blowhard tough guy who had all the answers and was always "right." I've learned differently. In the films I have seen of him, he's played some fascinating characters and he has done so with great nuance and care. I've also been terribly impressed by his comedic sense and timing. I've been completely impressed by Wayne. To see Wayne in The Quiet Man then The Wings of Eagles then They Were Expendable then She Wore a Yellow Ribbon then Fort Apache has been quite an experience and a real lesson in the underrated acting ability of Wayne. The word that stands out most with Wayne for me is "comfortable." He always seems to be at ease and I find this to be very inviting To which Rohanaka replied...... FRANK GRIMES SAID THAT ???????????????????? Oh my golly. (I wish I had said it all that well.) Now about some of the other stuff Frank Grimes has been saying...... Where IS my rope???? PS.... EVERYBODY.... terrific screencaps.

Whoa.... I tried earlier to get on here to reply to your further thoughts on John Wayne and Gail Russell there, little Jackie... and this lousy message board was all whacko again and would not work right... now I see I have some catching up to do!! But I will start w/ you young'un! And see how far I get..... I am SO glad I came to these message boards because I sure can honestly say that I love him now I think the Duke is DEFINITELY worth a second (and third and fourth etc etc) glance ha... but again I am biased.... I am glad you have found him out. And PS... you sound like you have had a similar revelation about him to what I have had toward Henry Fonda... I just NEVER could really get all that enthusiastic about Fonda... but over time... from reading on here... and viewing some of the films a few folks have suggested... I have become a true fan. It's nice to find new "old" favorites... ha. now I see what all the fuss was about. She was marvelous with those big tremulous tear filled eyes. I think she had VERY expressive eyes. I would put those among her best features. (but I am not a guy... ha.) I thought Robert Osborne would have a heart attack right there talking about Gail Russell and how beautiful she was and what a great talent she was.... he literally gushed over her.... it was so cute..... RO is human too! He really did pay her some very nice attention. I think it is good to see some "lesser known" quality actors and actresses get that sort of treatment. That is another nice thing about TCM. I also came to the realization yesterday that I love westerns..... HA! Who would have thought it Of course, anyone walking into my house would know because of the continual loop of Ben Johnson movies running on my television set Woo Hoo!! Go west young Favell, go west!!! Ha. (And PS.. Its been nice having you here on the Western side of town lately.) :-) And PSS: Wendy and April too... re: the comments about Wayne's politics. HA! If I decided to stop watching all the actors I disagreed w/.... OH my golly.... Ninety nine percent of the actors and entertainers and their movies and tv shows and music from probably the last 25 years or so would go unwatched.... ha. I think the interview you posted has it pretty well said, April.. Westerns in general tend to get "looked down upon" by some because they have a reputation for being.... I don't know... less "cerebral" maybe??? (as if CURRENT movies would rate better.. ha!) I think often people who like westerns are just considered a bunch of "hicks" or maybe uneducated or unsophisticated.... or possibly all three... But I guess if that WERE true... I would be the only one left on here still talking about westerns... HA!!! (in case you are wondering... I was complimenting you folks and slamming myself.... just to clarify my poor attempt at humor.... ha) What I am saying is that it's nice for an uneducated, unsophisticated hick like me to see so many OTHER folks from so many different walks of life enjoy the same sort of films as I do. Ok... everybody sing along with me... "All we are saying.... is give WESTERNS a chance...." :-) Ok... I have clearly gone off the deep end now... I must need a vacation or something.... ha.

Howdy there Ms. Favell!!! :-) The scene in which he stands there, with the bible in his hand just looking at it blew me away. People don't realize what a great reactor Wayne was, but in this movie, the emotions just pour over him.... every scene is his, and he and Gail worked so great together. I thought it was a fantastic film Woo hoo!! Glad you got to see this one, little lady! And I agree w/ you about Wayne. He is often very underated but I think he has a LOT more talent than most people give him credit for. (but then again.... since he is my favorite... I am a little biased... ha.) I have only recently become aware at the depth he had... especially when it came to non-verbal communication... the way he can display a variety of passing emotions all at once just by the look on his face... he really had a knack.

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO Miss Finnie!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for posting that link to this film.... I am so excited!! I just watched the first part of it.. and will come back later to check out the rest. I am hooked already. (PS... Hulu... who knew??? ha. I have only ever heard of it once before.... and did not even know what it was... ha. Thanks again!) :-)

Hello Jack Q... Sounds like you know your westerns... I haven't seen too many Scott films... but I DO have Western Union on tape... I am hoping to get to it SOMETIME. "The Uninvited I always liked this movie... very scary for its time... still gets me now too. (but then again... I am an easy "scare"... ha)

Whew... I THOUGHT I was remembering right about those sweet little candy coated beauties... Ha. :-) Just keep reminding me about the VCR and The Horse Soldiers... ha. I hope between you and my other two secretaries.... AND the TCM database.... MAYBE (just maybe) I can get things taken care of this time!!! ha.
-
"The Hanging Tree." Hey Chris... I did not see your post unitl after I had made my "job offer".. Ha. Glad you got to see that one again.... it is a really good movie... I never got around to "rambling" on it over here... but I am glad you brought it up. Since SSO is down I have to go off of memory to recall what I said exactly.... but I DID like Schell... I think April and some of the others had a few issues with her.... but I thought she did a good job. And re: Malden.... I DO recall what I said about HIS character...ha... POND SCUM!!! OH.. What a SLIMY guy that Frenchie was... But in truth... it was Cooper's film. Very good role for him, I thought. And you are right about the scenery... it was WAY cool.
-
Did someone say "chocolate"? Is that an official "acceptance" of the job offer????????? I can always use another secretary... Here is a little sign on bonus!!! And ps... if I am remembering wrong... just make your request and I'll see what I can do.... Miss Favell just gave me a LOT to live up to w/ that cool coffee mug!! (Oh the pressure!! Ha) :-)
-
WHEW!! I see I already have a nice little secretarial pool forming here!! That's good... because... as mentioned.... I need all the help I can get!!! ha. Ladies.... consider this as just a little advance on your salary.... April... Wendy: ENJOY!!!! :-)

The Horse Soldiers Woo Hoo!! I have been looking forward to this since I saw it on the June schedule a week or so ago!!! Yee haw! This is one of the Duke films I have been wanting to see for like.... FOREVER!! And I am also looking forward to the Bogdanovich documentary as well that night... in fact... the entire evening is going to be a good night to settle in w/ some popcorn and soda pop (and THE VCR so I can TAPE the couple of things I DON'T have and then just enjoy watching it all in one big Ford/Duke film fest spectacular!!! Ha. (Hey.. did I mention "woo hoo??) Ok so... in preparation for all this I have my request in for a TCM reminder .... because... well... I need all the help I can get.. ha. But I am still looking to hire that personal secretary to keep reminding me that this is all coming on so I don't SCREW up (yet again) and forget it!! ha!! (UGH.... I am such a lame brain) I WOULD offer a large salary w/ benefits package... but... alas... I can only afford to pay in chocolate.... (April?? Chris??? Jackie?? Bronxie?? Is someone needing a second job or anything???) HA!!!

Hellooooooooo Apri!! I just love Duke with little Gail and I really enjoyed "Tiny" Lister's and Robert Osborne's discussion last night. Boy, Robert O. is really fond of little Gail, ha! I've seldom seen him so enthusiastic about a performer. "A soft spot" is a good way to describe this movie... It is just so endearing. You can't (or at least I can't) help but enjoy it. After watching it last night, I was almost a bit "mad" at myself for waiting so long to see it again. It had been YEARS (possible even decades) since I last watched it and again... I even have that DVD set w/ this movie on it... so.... shame on me.... ha. I enjoyed Mr. O's chat w/ Lister too. It was a nice little extra at the beginning and end of the movie. And you are right. He does seem to have a 'soft spot" for little Gail. I think maybe tragic life stories can do that sometimes.. especially centered around someone who just seemed to have had such potential and lost it all. Such a sad story. love Harry in this movie, though he looks very thin, as if he'd been ill and that pains me a little. His presence is just a really soothing thing in a movie. I love listening to his voice His voice was so calm and steady and sure. He was definitely a "walk softly/big stick" sort of guy in this one. And I liked the shot you posted here of him leaning up agains that post... I almost commented on that last night... he seemed to bend at odd angles sometimes.... it was an "interesting" quirk to his character... but maybe it was just HIM. Anyway... it added to the whole package to watch him move like that. (And... he also had a great way of wearing a hat... just so.) And I liked the way he sort of sat back and watched things unfold w/ Quirt. He had is "opinions" about things... but he also let the facts speak for themselves. It was a good character for him. Another character that I just thorughly enjoyed was the telegraph operator. (though his name escapes me now) WHAT a crack up. I loved when he comes in that saloon to call Laredo out for Quirt and makes this grand entrance... he says something like.. "Men, don't get excited!" And the way he spent half his time bragging that he knew Quirt Evans and the other half of his time trying to dodge getting beat up because he'd bragged too much.... ha.... too funny. PS Chris... My favorite secondary character is the doctor. He can not grasp the faith and reasoning of the family That was another part that I really enjoyed in this film. He really seemed to care about the family despite being "jaded" and more or less "faithless" in he fellow man. I think he saw them as a refreshing change from some of the less savory characters he often was forced to deal with in his line of work. And he was almost "protective" of them in a way. At every turn the mother has an answer for the cynicism of the doctor. He argues science and she argues faith and they can only agree to disagree. THAT is a perfect way to describe their conversations. I liked how that all played out w/ them.

Look at the difference between the Duke's and Ben's gloves... and the other guys... Maybe they did more of their own "riding"? I don't know... they just look more REAL and worn than the younger guys. But then again... they were OLDER and more experienced in the movie too.... Or maybe the others just got sent over to wardrobe really quick that day and were told.... "Here, put these on for this photo shoot".. ha. I don't know why I notice weird stuff like that.. Ha. :-)

Well THIS is not the movie I thought I would end up jabbering about tonight... but I just wanted to give a brief nod to Angel and the Badman. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this one again. It has been a LONG time since I last saw it. (Even though I have it on a VERY poor qulality DVD that I got as a large package along w/ McClintock and several other (short) OLD Duke films... I have just put off watching it for some time now.) But then when I saw it was on tonight.... I decided TCM's HAD to be better than MINE... so I settled in and enjoyed the show. (the QT and the kidling watched too.) We all enjoyed it (though for the most part the kidling's interest was hit and miss) It is NOT the best Duke film ever.... but a nice story with some good old fashioned "moral" lessons for the young upstart of a "bad man" that make it a nice tale to watch as it unfolds. I especially like how Quirt's brief return to his old ways was no longer satisfying to him as the influence of the woman he'd come to love was now giving him an interest in "a better way". (no matter how he fought it) And the love story between him and "the angel" was very sweet and endearing. It was nice to see Dobe's daddy too.... after all the chat about the younger Carey on here today. He is always fun in a western. I liked the ending line too... about how he was going to hang Quirt's gun on the wall.... with a "new" ROPE. (and he meant that in a GOOD way) (You knew I would have to get the word "rope" in here SOMEHOW, somewhere.ha) :-) But my favorite bit had to be "Neighbor Carson".... I liked how that all played out. Quirt thought he was "bullying" old Carson to do the right thing... and at first, that was true. But by the time it was all over... Carson was so happy about the outcome of things.... he was actually GLAD to be neighborly. That was a fun twist. Ok.... so this one is not a "deep thinker" of a movie... but a still a nice, old fashioned "fun" western with a good mix of some action, some enteraining moments, some entertaining characters.... and a very sweet romance as well.

found this excerpt of a talk "Dobe" gave about Will Rogers: April.. I have had Will Rogers on the brain lately.... (ha) Believe it or not I was googling around for him because... well... I thought I MIGHT want to post some ROPE stuff w/ him (to go along w/ the Ropin' Fool post you made a while back) to act as a bit of coercion for the SHIFTLESS one and the MAD HAT too (I thought we might need some help....ha!) But anyway... while I was in the middle of my "google fest" I started reading about Rogers and WOW... what an interesting person. AND I never knew how he died until reading all that. How TRAGIC. (I don't know why I never bothered to find out his cause of death before... I just assumed heart attack or something.... duh) Very interesting read, though. And what a NICE piece on Carey Jr, too. Thanks for posting that. The more I read about him, the more he sounds like such a REAL sort of guy. (But in a VERY "I've lived a dream life w/ all my Hollywood stories sort of way) ha. PS Ms Cutter: I shall report back here about the gathering on Saturday and the screening of Stagecoach with Dan Ford on Monday. I'm also going to the Gunga Din screening on Friday, June 12th. Ben Burtt and Craig Barron will be talking about the sound design and how it influenced their work on Raiders. WOW... meeting w/ the Carey family and than all THIS!!! Stuff like that NEVER happens in KC. (BAH!) Picture me green, green, green with envy. ha! :-) Enjoy!!! :-)
