  1. Hey... RedRiver.... I watched YOUR movie the other night...(ha) I had the library order in a copy of Red River for me because I could not recall the last time I had seen it... And after watching it the other night... I think that is because I DON'T think I ever HAD seen it all the way through before. I have to say.... there were some VERY strong performances in this one. It was a BIG change for the standard "Duke" role and I liked getting to see him play a "less" than good guy for a change. I also liked Montgomery Clift... and when have I EVER not been glad to see Walter Brennan in ANYTHING!!! ha. And of course... the film was VERY artfully filmed and directed. I found a lot of interesting characters and peronalities in this film as well... But... I can't put this one up as high on the list of my Fave Dukes as I would like... because... Well.... I just had too many "issues" with the story. SO much of it just didn't ring true (especially the ending) But.... still a good film all in all. .
  2. More Ben: Sigh.... :-) And PS... thanks for putting a little quote in there... I can just hear him saying that... and for me.. his VOICE is as much a part of the charm as anything.... I just like that "Aw shucks, ma'am" quality he seems to have in nearly anything he says. Ha.
  3. do you play dress up with her? everything was strawberry shortcake and princess belle when i was 6. whats your daughter's favorites? Usually by the end of the day, I've managed to don at least ONE crown or a lovely hat of some sort. She is MOSTLY a Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty kinda gal (but only because of their wardrobe.... she's never seen either movie) but lately she is also liking Princess Jasmine (because she has finally gotten old enough to where she can watch Aladin...when she was a little younger.... both Jafar AND the Genie were too scary for her.) ha. She also has a Bella Dancerella DVD that has a bunch of Disney Princess songs on it and teaches simple dance steps.... that is a BIG favorite around here. Ok... enough "princess"..... back to finding new ways to torture the Grey One in a NON torture thread..... Hmmm... How about a "variety pack?"
  4. Don't those things know to never hit a lady Ha... Chris.. sadly I fear that age is no respecter of gender. :-)
  5. i had these pink princess gloves when i was 6 and i loved them to death. i wore them out, b/c i wore them with everything. you should get the kidling some of them. she would love them! and a cute little tiara to go with it! Are you KIDDING????? Our entire house is one big "Princess Wardrobe Walk In Closet"... we have gloves, we have tiaras, we have princess gowns (short, long, some even w/ wings!) We have "jewelery" We even have flip-floppy high healed shoes..... All pink, I might add.
  6. that quote about age was not mine - I pasted MissG's quote Well... WHOEVER said it... it was nicely said.... Ha. This movie in particular is a juxtaposition of the small with the large And whoever said THIS and all the stuff following it...... IT was nicely said as well! :-) You always do a great job of bringing out the finer details to these intimate moments that make up la life dedicated to service I am still recalling your TWE posts and the screencaps you used there as well.... Fine work on both films, my Fordian friend.
  7. kathy, do you like those gorgeous pink gloves too How could I not? Pink is a "signature color" for the kidling.... and a form of torture of the QT...( he calls it "faded red"...ha) So for me.... I get double the entertainment value out of pink for sure. :-)
  8. Sounds like one of those "fun" movies that were very popular way back when.... I will watch it when I need a good "no thinker" to enjoy. :-) it's a timeless LBD: "little black dress Well.... over time.... my LITTLE back dresses have gotten..... less LITTLE...ha. But still always nice to have at least one in the closet to rely on! :-) Message was edited by: rohanaka
  9. What's your favorite classic eyewear? Ok.... NOT a classic movie.... but it IS a classic!! :-) And the way my eyesight has been acting up lately.... I may just need glasses about that strong in the very near future.... Ha! A few years ago.... I hit forty.... and forty hit me back!!!!! :-)
  10. I absolutely ADORE Elizabeth M's dress! I want that dress Well.... I can't SEE the dress....ha. I got overruled... so I had to record that movie tonight instead.... tough break for me.... (but.... at least the tape is rolling!!!) :-) I bet when I DO see the dress... it will be WONDERFUL.... but knowing MY luck, I doubt it will come in my size!!! Ha. :-)
  11. I spent some time recently taking some caps from She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and I wanted to post them if that's OK. OK??? Are you KIDDING???? Those shots are GORGEOUS!!!! (I LOVE the one where the horse is leaping between the gap in the rocks.... that whole chase scene is one of the most intense moments in the of the entire movie. And THANK YOU for focusing on our beloved BEN!! :-) He was SO perfectly cast in that role... and the scenes where he the a focus of the action are very well done. continue to be deeply touched by the incredible sensitivity Ford brings to his movies featuring stories about elder characters. I don't think any other director explored the age of loss, or the "third age" more continuously throughout their career. Nicely said, little lady. I always hear so much on here about how bold and brash he was... but I think I mentioned somewhere on here earlier that for all his 'tough old guy" exterior... he must have had a REALLY huge heart. And he seemed to really have a good grasp on human nature and how emotional moments could be brought to the front of a story (if only for a brief and passing moment) without losing focus on the rest of the action going on. I'm probably not saying it well, but he seemed to have a knack for using these sorts of moments to enhance his characters and the story in a way that the average person could easily relate to . PS... Ms Cutter and Rey.... I have been meaning to chime in a big word of thanks for the military history.... that has all added a nice layer to the conversation and helped w/ the perspective... nicely done! 12. I've just added THE FURIES to my Netflix queue This is one I have had on my wanna see list for a while now... and since I am not a Netflix kinda gal... the library seems to be my best bet... but lately have not had luck there either. I will hope to catch it someday though because I have heard it is a good one. It's about time I upgraded to 21st century technology. Soon I may even get a can opener! Ha... welcome to my world...
  13. And may I say...Robert Montgomery is SOOOOOOOOO CUTE!! YES!! you may!! (ha) :-) (can you tell I have been playing too many games of "Mother May I lately?? The perils of motherhood...ha) PS April.... WHAT a pic!!!! :-)
  14. They showed that she wrote "The Big House" with that great big ham, Wallace Beery. 1930, they showed a scene with Robert Montgomery, who was featured in this film. Gosh he was soooooooo cute. Well.... there's a film I never heard of before (you always do that to me... HA!) I will check into that one. And PS... re: Robert Montgomery.... you forgot to use capital letters.... SOOOOOOOO CUTE!! ha. :-) Check out his daughter tonite Thanks for the tip Miss Maven... I saw that was on the schedule.... I will try to check it out.
  15. San Dimas was where he and Fleming used to go hunting and fishing together when Wayne was younger I don't know anything about Fleming... but if he is anything like HONDO.... and if the Duke was as "rough and tumble" a young man as I imagine he might have been.. I bet they were right at home w/ the WILDlife. :-)
  16. Robert Montgomery Whoa Baby... :-) (After Night Must Fall and They Were Expendable... (and one other movie I saw him in recently but can't remember at the moment) I have a whole new appreciation of him. (even his acting!! Ha) :-)
  17. Here is a little "preview"...ha. PS.. Now I HAVE to hurry up and watch this again... We don't want to keep poor Hondo just standing around waiting forever. :-)
  18. screencaps....hint....hint Ha....I only just got started on those and then Rio Bravo sort of interupted me... but I am already thinking I need to pick up where I left off... because I suddenly have a serious case of Western Ramble Fever...ha. :-)
  19. OH APRIL.................................... sigh. (PS... note to self... add Hondo to my list of movies I want to watch again... SOON!) :-)
  20. Glad to hear I am not alone...ha. So many movies... so little time. :-)
  21. Have YOU watched any good movies lately Well... I DID get to watch a couple of the Fan Movies last week... but MOST of them (sadly) I had to record and have NOT gotten to watch them yet... including "Went With the Breeze" (ha) THAT is what we jokingly call GWTW around here by the way. I know... how blasphemous.. ha. But it is very funny to hear the kidling say it... she puts a very cute emphasis on "WENT" with a big pause after it and then when she says "With the Breeze" it comes out sort of "musical sounding" like "BREEEEEEZE"... too cute...ha) I haven't seen GWTW in a while now... so I have been wanting to watch it since I saw you on w/ our beloved Mr. O last week. But I only had time to watch your intro and outro instead.(sigh) I REALLY wanted to see Ms Maven's choice too as I have NEVER seen that one before, and I also have a couple from the library I need to get to.... UGH.. I am such a slacker.
  22. Wow.... TERRIFIC chat on GWTW folks... I have been so "out of it" lately I haven't checked in here in a while and now that I have... I am simply bowled over!! Nice job everybody. (PS... Did I mention WOW?) :-)
  23. I continue to be deeply touched by the incredible sensitivity Ford brings to his movies featuring stories about elder characters. I don't think any other director explored the age of loss, or the "third age" more continuously throughout their career. For all his 'tough old guy" exterior... he must have had a REALLY huge heart. And PS... after reading your comments on Judge Priest several months ago... it is one that I have on my WANNA SEE list for sure. Meet Uppity, Unbridled and Under Paid HA!! That sounds like the title to some sort of Marilyn Monroe movie...ha. (don't let FrankGrimes read that). ha.
  24. don't think I can possibly add anything myself, Wendy, you and Kathy have really said a mouthful. I've always seen the film as essentially a series of vignettes or snapshots of military life in that part of the west, with the underlying story of an old man passing the flame (or the old past giving way to the future, the eternal "parade" that is markedly present in so many Ford films). Well for someone who didn't have anything to add... you did a good job of saying things just right!! ha. It IS like looking through an old photo album in a lot of respects. Sort of like those indie films from the sixties that everyone thought so avante garde because they just followed people around living their daily lives.Ford did it BEFORE they did, but he didn't do it wihtout sacrificing artistry and taking advantage of a much more magnificent backdrop and grander scope of history. Try doing that and risk alienating your audience by concentrating not on ACTION but on character and going for the texture of an old soldier's life winding down Yet another excelllent point. And the more I learn about Ford, the more I am impressed by all his many ways of bringing out the best parts of the whole storytelling experince.... and the more I also appreciate how trendsetting he was at times and how innovative he was. He set a standard for those who came after him that left some VERY large shoes which are rarely filled nowdays as well as they were when he was wearing them. (Ok.. that may have sounded goofy...ha. My sentence structure is NOT up to par these days...Ha. I only mean that HE is a standard that few filmmakers now days are able to live up to.... at least in my lowly, untrained, and uneducated opinion.) :-)
