Miss Goddess: he looks like a sullen little boy Jack Favell: I thought he looked kind of blank in them, like he couldn't even remember what he was before I think you are both right. April.. He DID look like a sullen litte boy... but I have to agree w/ Jackie.. I imagine he only knows his present emotional state and has NO ability to recall his "normal" days before he was injured. I am certainly NO expert on brain injuries... but I think that little side story is there as a way to possibly explain what made him the way he was... and I think that makes it all the more tragic...if not sympathetic...in a way. But still he was a monster... no matter what "made him"... so the sympathy for him that I might have only goes so far. (Maybe not a right comparison... but I think of him sort of like I would one of Dracula's victims... Many of those folks were perfectly nice people BEFORE he bit them... but afterward... I'd be looking for a BIG wooden stake... no matter what. Ha.)

Well, some people would say "the more, the merrier". Yes... and many of them would likely be talking to themselves.

would-be swashy of dubious achievement Not so, Monsieur!! I have read many of your excellent posts on these boards... Laffite, who is no Inigo. And to THAT I can only say, based on the things I have read... that mostly likely... Inigo is NO Laffite!! :-)

all the other fun stuff that surrounds this movie. The longer I hang out in here the more fun I am having learning about all the different directors and little "signatures" they seem to have that can be found from film to film... I am sure there is going to be a lot of discussion on that... but I wanted to just touch on ONE little theme I have noticed that is at least common to the LAST Hawks film we discussed over in Rambles... THAT hat.... WHAT were they thinkin' ??? Ha... (All registered voters... please cast your vote... and PS.... ONLY ONE vote per human being, if you please.)

then you both fall into each other gently in front of the fire place. I will have to plug in my sweet little cas tiron stove replica space heater with the fake flames that flicker in the little glass window.Ha!! That's as close to a fireplace as we can get around here..(I am still waiting on my INTERIOR DECORATOR to come up here from Florida for my big extreme home makeover) Ha. whats your favorite part of the movie I love when she is talking on the phone while she is making baby applesauce and then she starts opening up all the cabinets and the whole place is FILLED with applesauce. You can tell she's had WAY too much time on her hands. Message was edited by: rohanaka

April.. while we have him in here... we ought to mention a little town called LARAMIE... he NEVER showed up for THAT one... ha. BUT... I am afraid to call him on it or he will use it as an excuse to bipass Rio Bravo..) I will save THAT guilt trip for another day. Ha.

I especially liked Mrs. Chumley. She herself does not judge Dowd but makes the most of their unusual conversation by enjoying it for the pleasant banter it is. Chris... thanks for bringing up Mrs. Chumley... I really liked that little conversation. She is so congenial and seemed genuinely kind... she COULD have been played much differently. But I liked that angle a lot. I love when she asks her chauffeur... "Did he say, Pooka?" :-)

Kathy, will you faint in the arms of your hubby in the snow? you wouldnt mind that would you? heehee YOU are too cute... If I EVER have to faint... in the arms of ANYBODY in the snow... I hope it is my husband.. the sweet little QT. and PS... if I ever did think I was going to faint and it was snowing... I think I am such a wimp... I would have to say something like... "Hold that thought... and then drag him inside where it was warm and then say.. "Ok" and THEN I would faint... ha. PS... I LOVE Baby Boom, by the way. :-)

Well hello there Mrs. Movieman Cacie!! Nice to meet you. RE: Mandy Patinkin.... I first remember seeing him in The Princess Bride... and then a while after that I saw him (I think it was on cable) in Sunday In the Park With George... and I was so impressed by his singing... I had no idea he did anything but play "swashbuckling" comedy till then. ha! :-) Over the years I've enjoyed both his singing and his acting... He's pretty versatile guy.

Woo Hoo April.. THANK YOU for the yummy treats little lady!!! (and for the fly swatter!! )I KNOW I can use them both! PS.. Chris... to paraphrase Will Rogers.... I never met a "cookie" I didn't like! Ha.

Are you going to grow crazy with the snow like Diane Keaton in BABY BOOM OH!! I hope not!! I used up all my apples way back in the fall!! :-)

Barb... I do believe the have the whole thing.. at least it appeared that way Here is part 1... (and then judging from the way it is listed in there, it looks like you should be able to just keep going on and on after that...) ENJOY!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu8T4U_zak8&feature=PlayList&p=4A1AAB0B98F12074&index=0&playnext=1 And PS... Would that I COULD send you my snow... I hope the weather guys are WRONG. I have peach trees that are just startting to blossom and my apple tree is not far behind... All my tulips are budding... (I went out and put some plastic bags over them) I have a feeling a lot of the sweet little spring plants are going to get bit though... because it is supposed to start out as "sleet and freezing rain" and then turn over to snow sometime tomorrow... BLECH!

Hiya Ms. Cutter... I think that "respect" thing is one of the qualities about Elwood that Harvey may have admired most.. Perhaps Mama Dowd may have "raised her boy right". ha. Many of the people drinking with Elwood and Harvey would likely love to get off the gravy train so to speak but they all lack the one thing Elwood has, courage to do so. I think you may have something there... and that COULD be the key to a part of the "envy" that Elwood mentions.

That is just too weird for me right now! Are you kidding? NO I am not...but I wish I was.... I went to WalMart earlier today and stocked up on some goodies (we are supposed to get hit with 6-12" of stinking SNOW tonight and tomorrow if you can believe it..) and while I was at the store I decided I wanted a bottle of soda... so I bought one of those little 16oz sized bottles that they have in their coolers... Well... I dropped it as I was putting it in the car... but I did not open it until at LEAST an hour later... so you would think it would have been ok by then... But I guess I opened it too fast... because it went all over my neck and the front of my shirt before I could get the lid back on quick enough... O watta dope am I!! :-)

Elwood has a talent. He finds people who are unhappy or in need of "conveying" (i.e. help Hiya Jackie... that is a terrific observation... I think you have pegged Elwood's gift in life... and it may not even be one he was ever aware of. It was likely not even a conscious effort on his part... nice "no sense" posting, there young'un. :-)

reading the ravings of a lunatic Oh my, Wendy... if your post be lunacy..rave on, my friend... Lovely ramblings about a lovely film.. The way that every little movement or expression on his face registers in her eyes just blew me away. These two were so in synch as actors. I love that they threw themselves into the story "In synch" is the perfect way to say it. They hit every emotion perfectly. This story is the best romantic film I have seen in a long time and yet... it is a nice combination of romance, suspense, and even history... And the images are just lovely (and I'm not even talking about the two stars anymore... April... mouthwater is right. :-) ha)... But just all the artistry that went into the filming of the story as well... the scenes on the bridge where the bomb gets tossed and Marlene is walking around with her lovely flowing gown catching on all the carnage... And the faces... quite "Fordian", if I may say so. And the now infamous forest scene is made even more wonderful by the scenery and the filming... And to think... I had NO intention of even watching this movie until about 30 minutes or so before it aired... Barb... I mean Countess Bronxling... Thanks again... PS... Folks... set those VCR or DVD players... I say again.. this one is a keeper PSS... Wendy..I got sprayed this afternoon opening a bottle of Dr. Pepper myself... Do you think it is some sort of soda pop conspiracy?? ha. :-)

I am going to have to watch it again first. It's on my list for later tonight as well... I watched it last about 4 or 5 months ago... but not as you say.. with a "critical" eye... :-) So it sounds as if we all have some "catching up to do" so we can ramble back this way again later then... I will look forward to it..

Hiya Barb... I remember how almost magical the scenes in the forest were, when Marlene says, "When did you first know you were in love with me?" And Robert replies, "The moment I saw you, I was lost". Oh sigh... again. Ha. What a moment... What is it with the "Robert's" around here lately... last week it was sweet and deadly Robert Montgomery as dear old Danny Boy... and this week we have sweet and dashing Robert Donat to the rescue... Ha. in THIS movie; you can see he was born to be an actor; the measured diction, the graceful, almost easeful way he seems to enjoy the "play-acting" of being a romantic hero; I adore him here. I think the range of emotion he had to show here was all handled so well... and he came off exaclty as you say... a "romantic hero". And you are right about Marlene too... she was so utterly graceful... you chose the perfect word... "Enchanting".... but even so.. she never came off as pampered or cloying. She was very strong and self confident... yet entirely vulnerable... that is an usual mix for a female lead in a film like that... but it really worked for her. Message was edited by: rohanaka
