  1. April... looking at your screencaps... I thought they were MINE at first.. ha. (Western minds think alike)

think Dean Martin fit in just like a glove in this scenario

I think Dude and all the internal (not to mention external) battles he faces are among the most interesting aspects of the entire story... and a VERY fine bit of acting from MR. Martin... I have NEVER been too huge a fan of him... especially as an actor... but I can't think of ANYONE else who could have done such a fine job in that role.

Dude has something to prove... to EVERYONE... to John T... to the whole town... ESPECIALLY the criminal element... but ALSO (and most importantly) to himself...

He is TIRED of the man he used to be... but he is not quite able to shake the past... and who he still is for the moment... at least not without a lot of struggle.

I loved the transitions he goes through... starting with the scene where they go after Ward Bond's killer... This is the first time where he REALLY acts as if he wants to be the man he used to be...

When he and John T make their plans about which saloon door they will go in.... he wants to try the front door for a change:

And at first... it appears more or less that he was still the same old "loser"... at least to everyone else.. but he KNEW what he'd seen.. and he was SURE the guy was there... and thanks to a twist of fate... he is proved right. And then EVERYONE especially JOHN T.. gets to see that he's beginning to grow back into the man he once was.... And then... he starts getting a little more respect...STARTING with John T...

It's his first step toward being "righteous" again... it sort of reminds me... (again...one of those OAHW comparisons) of the role of McPherson... needing to prove himself and be made "clean".

  2. but I did immediately think of To Have and Have Not when I saw it with

    Rio Bravo.

I was the other way around... I recently watcht THAHN for the first time a couple of weeks ago... and only a short while after all the talk about OAHW... and when Lauren Bacall said that line... I about jumped out of my chair because THEN I remembered that it was also in Rio Bravo...

  3. Hiya Ms Cutter.. (or should I say... HEY KOOLAID!)

I am sure you know much more about Hawks then I, but based on my very limited knowledge, I think you are right about the "strong women" angle in Hawks films... and also about women who are able to not only "hang out" with the guys... but even stand up with (and/or to) them as well...

And I think I recall you mentioning that Empire Strikes Back connection beforel.. Wow.. In a lot of ways, I am sure you couldn't get much more "different" than the storylines of Rio Bravo and TESB... but at the same time... there are some noticable similarities especially between Leia and a lot of the women you will see in some of the Hawks films as well. Thanks for bringing it up!!

  4. Wow Ms Coopsgirl... that was a REALLY fun read.... thanks for sharing those links... they do almost sound like they could have been brothers in a way... especially with the Duke looking to make a name for himself while struggling in the shadow of his older sibling... And then finally receiving that due w/ time... I think they both were terrific actors (I know what a surprise.. ha) and it is sad that among today's film stars there seems to be none like them. Thanks for posting those links!

  5. 52 ...I'm almost there

If it makes you feel any better, Chris... the QT is already PAST that... (he'll be 54 next month) ha. There is ALWAYS someone older.. if you know where to look. :-) Fortunately for me... that's under my own roof! Ha)

  6. I?ll just post links

I bet that will be an interesting read... although (ha) I am already HATING the title.. ha. (I would want it to say... did they SHARE the same shadow) ... But I will try to keep an open mind. :D

  7. I?ll just sit back now and wait for somebody to make fun of something related to Gary;

NO WAY... and if they do... We'll just send the DUKE over to stare them down and set them straight... ha. :P

PS.. April...I Iove that scene... and you are right... that guy does almost clobber himself w/ that post... I wonder if that was on purpose or just one of those happy accident's they decided to leave in.

And PSS.. It IS hard to catch certain things on a capture... I had as hard a time trying to get John T's embarrased little shrug... but still a VERY funny moment.

  8. A sequal to Dark Zombies...

    STUDIO: Turner Productions, Inc.

    YEAR: 2009

    TITLE: BESEIGED (the Saga Continues)

    Director: Edward D. Wood

CAST: the same as Dark Zombies... (but with numerous additions to the ever expanding cast)

Story: Same old story, over and over...and over.

  9. One mistake I saw, if you can count it, is Harry Carey, Jr. is listed in the credits but I coun'ldn't find him. Turns out his scenes were deleted.

Whoa Chris... in the flurry of activity, I almost missed this... I wonder where he would have fit into the story...

  10. I LOVED Reginald Owen, Kathy! I just thought he was hysterical from the minute I saw him....and he actually made me stop watching Frank Morgan, which is simply amazing

When he first meets her in the theater... I thought at first he'd be just a "passing jerk" sort of character and that would be the end of him... but then we she meets him again on the street... I loved the way he goes from being "annoyed" by her to helping her... And the scenes at the party w/ him giving her all those little hand signals and gestures were hilarious.... I loved how he would not give Morgan any quarter in that dining room.. he was a man on a mission.

I loved Morgan too, especially his very endearing and stuttery proposal.... what a sweet guy. I wasn't sure he was going to be that nice at the beginning.

I wasn't either... I figured he'd be as "lecherous" as he first seemed... but I just don't think his heart was in it.. ha. I LOVED how he tells her he wants him to darn his socks and then starts talking about all the many kids he wants them to have... too sweet... I almost wished for a (brief) moment she HAD ended up w/ him... (But I got over it... Dr. Max was way too endearing.)

PS... Bronxgirl... STAY.. GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO!!! I can think of a few people I could have that conversation with... ha. (I would be the one saying GO... just to clarify that.) ha. :-)

  11. I haven't played "Clue" since I was a child. I always wanted to

be Miss Scarlet---wasn't there a Miss Scarlet?

There WAS a Miss Scarlett.... it's YOU for sure, little Missy.. (I used to play this game w/ my brothers all the time... but they finally got to where they wouldn't play with me anymore because I always won... I'm not bragging...I wasn't THAT good... its just that they were WORSE... ha) And I used to love being Miss Scarlett too.. but I think by now I have passed on from my Miss Scarlett phase to my Mrs. White stage of life (I think she was the frumpy old housekeeper.. ha)

  12. Hiya Chris... I loved what you said about their "walks"...NOT stupid at all, by the way. :-) But.. IS Duke "strutting" though, or more like "marching" sometimes??? However he is walking... it is VERY purposeful.

He walks and acts with confidence at every turn. Every turn but when he is dealing with Angie

She DOES have a way about her that totally trips him up...

And when she kisses him for the first and second time... (you are RIGHT about the Bogie and Bacall angle) he gets TOTALLY thrown for a loop...

    riobravo72.jpg

She gives him a sultry yet almost "mocking" look as she tells him to go back to work... and then he is so dumbfounded he can only shrug in and almost goofy teenager sort of way..

    riobravo73.jpg

It is HILARIOUS to see him so unhinged...

what would draw her to a man so much older than herself

I agree she IS a bit young... but at the same time... she is NOT so young, at least in the ways of the world anyway. Even though she was married... and not what one would call "loose"... she seemed to be very comfortable with "men/women" subjects and relationships

Maybe just being treated nice is enough for her.

I think eventually that is what happnes.. you may have something there. But at the beginning... her defenses are up and she is playing it VERY close to the vest... She just wants to stay out of trouble. But at the same time... she can't seem to help herself from toying with him... It's like that is almost part of her self defense mechanism as well. If she "plays it" over confident... she won't be so likely to get pushed around...

    riobravo55.jpg

But eventually I think she starts to see him for who he really is... and that is part of why she falls for him as well. I think it has a lot to do with his character and his rigid attitudes of right and wrong... She may not LIKE it when he "lays down the law"... but he is REAL to her... and her last man... was anything BUT that. She know that with John T... what she sees is what she gets... and that makes him very attractive to her as well.

So it is likely a combination of things in the long run... When she begins to see him as more than just another judgmental hard nosed sheriff... and she admires his character and cares about what happens to him... then eventually it DOES become enough for her that he treats her nice... It's probably been a very long time since anyone has...

  13. Hello there Mr. Grey....

You caught me. I did go back and add that little story. I meant to include it originally,

but I forgot all about it when I went to post. Nothing gets by you, Hawkgirl.

Whew... I thought maybe the old noggin' was not what it used to be.... oh who am I kidding.... THAT'S still true whether you edited your post or not... ha. "Hawkgirl" is more like "Blind as a Bat Girl" lately... :-)

So are you going to knock me cold then toss me into your cart and then wheel me

    off to a frozen rope?

Well... now that you mention it..... (We'll just have to wait and see how long it takes you to mosey over yonder and start to ramblin' on Rio Bravo... not to mention you need to cast your vote on John Wayne's doofy looking hat...)

there is a pleasant calmness that can be felt with conversations with the elderly. This is why

    I enjoy talking with Lynn.

Oh my... Ms Cutter.. would you like to borrow either my wrench or my rope??? (or both??)

And I bet they all tell you to get lost

It wouldn't be the first time that someone has done that... Ha. But all kidding aside... I think it is fun to have friends in a variety of age brackets... I have always enjoyed talking w/ folks that were both younger AND older than me... But the older I get the more of a challenge it gets to be for me to find "older than me's" Ha.

The toughest part for me is the repetitiveness. I take my country grandma to the

store and when I drive by certain places, she almost always says the same thing.

Certain sights or words spark an exact response. Now this could be just how my

grandma has always been. I'm not sure. But I guess this could be true for all of us.

I think we all have our little "sayings" that we rely on...which might explain Elwood's "what did you have in mind"... it could just be that was a little witty thing he always says. I know I have a gazillion little things like that... Some of my little sayings were passed down to me from my parents and even my grandparents... like you said... "certain sights or words that spark a response". And your Grandmother likely is passing down little sayings and expressions to you that you may not even be aware of... just like mine did... But again.. in recent years it seems there is less and less of that in most people's general conversations...

Miss G equals wrongheaded. There's just no escaping that

Oh me.. April.... when Ms Cutter is finished with that wrench and rope... I am sure we can pass it on to you.. (this is starting to sound like a game of CLUE... Miss Goddess in the Films and Filmmakers forum with a Wrench.. Ha)

I tend to do that a lot myself.

Do you listen? I bet you don't.

Actually... It depends on what I am saying to myself.. I have noticed that a lot of my "self jabbering" tends to involve "self correction" so sometimes I DO listen... It's when I start asking myself stuff and then answering back that I look around to be sure no one is staring... ha.

Lyman (Lie Man) believes he has all the answers, which,

ironically, makes him the crazy one.

He wants a "quick fix" for things and for him it is all about a more or less "cookie cutter" approach for everyone... As some have already mentioned... the special formula that he wants them all to try is almost like a form of "one cure fits all" sort of medicine. I don't think it is because he is meanspirited or uncaring... I just think it is because he has become too unattached to the emotional aspect that must be a struggle for those who work w/ so many "emotionally" confused people. I imagine that could be a struggle for any sort of caretaker or doctor in his line of medicine...

I think you are right. I believe many of us carry "wrenches" these days. You

    seemingly cannot trust anyone, anymore

Well... some folks are more trustworthy than others, my friend.

Now... where did I put that wrench???? :-)
