light and refreshing
I like the "tangy and sweet" aspect... and the FEEL of the meringue in your mouth is probably half the fun of the flavor as well...
I have in the past (way back when I was a kid) made meringue w/ brown sugar instead of white... just because we were out of "white" sugar.... and my mom thought it would be a "bust"... But it worked and it made the color of the meringue a beautiful golden brown. Kinda fun for something different. But I think if I recall I used less sugar than I would have otherwise... it's been a while...
But man oh man... all this PIE talk is making me think that PIE is on the menu...
Hmmmm... maybe even for supper... we could do chicken pot PIE for the meal... and then have some REAL PIE for desert...
Now Fruit or Cream??? That is the question...
Have I said PIE enough in this conversation yet??

Oh yeah.... :-) It sounds as if it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL as well as delicious for you wedding cake too. (were you married in the spring? Or early summer?) Was your reception outside too?? I could picture a lovely outdoor wedding (minus Jim and his car of course) ha. And having something like that served outside as well...
My mother once made pea soup in a pressure cooker ..... I don't recommend it

We know that Angharad always brings the stool, and that the men always walk home this way, and Mrs. Morgan always takes the money and stores it away. The men then wash up and eat their dinner. Always. Now how do we know that? I don't think it's stressed in the narration. It is expressed in the music, and in the tempo that all the characters move in. I noticed that from the beginning, when Huw and his father are walking. There is a rhythm set up
Once again, with your keen eye, you have brought even deeper meaning to an aspect of the "filming of the film" And you are so right about the "rythm" I know we have mentioned the music in this and many Ford films before.... but I went back and re-watched the clip again after reading your thoughts and you really can "feel" the ritual aspect of their daily lives all tied up by the "rythm" aspect of their music. Sort of like everybody is caught up together in a "march" or perhaps a "dance" of life (depending on the tune)
I LOVE old hymns (the more traditional, the better, for me). I have no real formal musical training, so I will likely not say this as well as someone more educated in such things could say, but the melodies of those old songs tend to have a very "reliable" structure that may be less popular today, but seemed to be very appealing to songs of the era that this story takes place. And maybe that is perhaps due in part to their "reliability" (in terms of structure and rythm).
The song being sung as the men are "marching" back home is a great example of how the rythm of the music drives the story. I have no idea for sure what the words are they are singing (since I don't speak or understand "Welsh"...) but the tune is the one used for the hymn, Guide Me ,O Thou Great Jehovah. And in a way that is a fitting song in some respects... as if they realized their daily rituals were somehow ordered by a "higher power". At least it seems that way to an "Old Hymn Junkie" like me. :-)
Anyway... thanks for bringing your watchful eye into the conversation... you always bring something extra to the table.
PS: Ms. Cutter... thanks for the insight given into the whole artwork aspect of this and other films as well. I imagine w/ all your studies, that you have a pretty keen eye of such things as well.

When Maureen O'Hara gets indignant or upset about something, I sure don't want to cross her.
HA!!! She is my all time favorite actress. And I love her in this role... And "indignant" and "upset" is definitely a strong suit for her as an actress.... and somehow I imagine it is not much of a stretch for her as a real person too. But from what I have read and heard about her... she is not one to "waste" a good mad... I don't think she would be one who flies off the handle at any given moment.... but it might be a good idea to take cover if she DOES decide to fly...(no pun intended w/ regard to her love for aviation) Ha. :-)
Look at Angharad's face in back there. That smile. How many of us have photos of our family where one of us is caught off in the background smiling with pride and love like that?
That really says family to me.

I just want to say this has been a lot of fun rambling on and on with you and other folks about such a wonderful film... and I want to personally blame YOU and MR. GRIMES for making me run out of Kleenex... (ok...so I was running low anyway... I HAVE had the "BLECH" lately... but since that is letting up... I have to just blame the two of you instead... ha.)
Seriously... you gentlemen have brought out so many wonderful aspects of this film for me and I want to thank you both and all the others who added some very nice commentary as well... This is what makes this sort of board so much fun. And I thank you.
There is only one thing you have said here that I have to take issue with... probably I am just being TOO critical.. but I think it needs to be examined maybe a little more closely....

Chris, something you said yesterday has had me thinking ever since :
One of my favorite scenes in the picture is when the older children have had their say and must go there is only McDowell at the end of the table. Feeling left out he drops his silverware on the plate loudly enough to get his father's attention. Crisp responds that he knows the boy is still there and McDowell has a small smile that that is enough.
Since, as I've already lamented, I MISSED the beginning of the film the other night... I went for a visit to the ever handy "youtube" genie... and popped in a few little words and Poof... it pulls up whatever you are looking for... I just wanted to watch that scene again for myself... (PS disregard the Spanish subtitles)
PSS.... Molo... grab a tissue... (me too) Ha. :-)

The reason I put this in now... after all this conversation already is that it really does show how familes... even people in general...can choose to be respectful even in their disagreements. And that your parents are still your parents...even when you disagree. (and your kids are still your kids as well)
Notice how the one son says... "We are not questioning your authority sir..." They are taking a stand for what they feel is right, but they still respect the one who is in authority over them... and they respect him enough to LEAVE when they know the issue will cause too much strife and disagreement. That speaks volumes to me of how much they really do love him.
And then later on in the film... when the Mother has Huw take her to the big outdoor workers' meeting and the she ends up letting everybody have a piece of her mind... as she goes to leave, she stumbles... and the four older boys try to help her... and she shrugs them off. She is almost telling them... "Remember where you came from boys... the issue is deeper than the workers strike now... it is time for you to CHOOSE ." Just a simple gesture on her part... but it speaks volumes.
Again... it is all such a telling way of showing how much of their love for one another was intertwined with respect for one another as well.
Ok...I know... enough of the R-E-S-P-E-C-T.... (This movie must have brought out the "Aretha" in me.) Ha.

The recipe said beat the whites until they formed stiff peaks. I got out the mixer and mixed and mixed and nothing ? no peaks. So I went to the hand wisk and after about 20 minutes of beating
Ha... at least you tried to READ the instructions close enough to know you had to try to make the eggwhites DO something... we just "beat them up a little" and expected them to "rise" (hence the scrambled eggs) Ha.

Wow Grey Guy!!
This is a VERY nice surprise!! And PS... don't blame me for this rambly thing. Blame... My personal secretary.... Ha. :-)
Gee... you men are just putting me to shame... with your mushy talk about this movie and your wonderful screencaps... Here I come on with just a little "ditty" about forgetting to check the TV guide.... and you guys have just about blown me away.
Gruffydd is the new man in town, so his standing must be earned not demanded. I don't believe he can just come in and boss around the elders of the Church. He did stand up to them very early on and he got a lashing for it, too.
Ok... I confess...It has been a while since I saw this thing all the way through... and since my "secretary" was such a lame brain...and I missed the beginning this time, I had forgotten some of the points you are making here. But that is a good example of why he held back later on.
I also believe a person can help open the eyes and mind of another, especially when their personalities are different. Angharad's outburst was emotional and heartfelt. She wasn't sticking to order and process as Gruffydd was. He's been taught to keep his emotions in check. But she broke with ritual. She rocked the boat. This is something you just don't do in a world of ritual and process.
Another excellent point.... It does open the door to her being his "teacher" of sorts.
I do believe Angharad is the kind of woman who could and would be happy living in poverty so long as she was surrounded by love and family. I do NOT believe this is true for all
women, though.
True... some PEOPLE (men or women) are too caught up in "riches" rather than real wealth... and folks like that will NEVER have "enough stuff". But Angharad is a great example of someone who would be the exact opposite of that. Her "riches" were not the kind you could put in a bank account and the things that she valued most had nothing to do w/ money.
And I really don't think Gruffyd was much different than that as well.... but he did put more emphasis on "providing" for her than he did on "loving" her...because in his mind he had to do the one because of the other... And you are right... that is often a "man" thing. I say again... MEN! (ha) :-)
don't believe Gruffydd planned on falling in love in his life, but, as love so often does, it just shows up, unannounced. Angharad was not part of his plan. He is torn as to what to do. He truly is conflicted. In his head and in his heart, he doesn't believe he can have it all. He feels he must choose. Rightly or wrongly, he chooses his lifelong pursuit over love.
That is a good way of saying it... HEY... this almost reads like some sort of mushy "LOVE" commentary... What gives, Mr. "I don't do romance"????? HA!!!!
I believe Gruffydd's life becomes one of regret
I think there is a lot of regret over this issue... Surely he suffers from it... and she ends up with a LIFE full of it... and possibly even her parents share in it at least somewhat as well... especially when the church gossips get all up in arms (or tongues" as it were). There was a lot of regret to go around...
her "return" scene is a "small" but very powerful one for me
That whole exchange between her and Huw and the housekeeper... ugh.. I almost expected Angharad to roll up her sleeves and start showing us the bruises because you could SEE she was in such agony... physical pain even. I am not saying I thought her husband beat her... I am just saying that for her, the pain she must have felt could not have been any worse if he had...
And when Huw first gets there... She was so "pristine" and perfect. And also so very "stoic" at first.. and then... the emotions caught up to her, even if only for a moment... and the pain was a raw as ever. VERY heartbreaking.
What is the "and"? Quite interesting
May I submit.... "AND I was an IDIOT and a HUGE JERK for ever letting you go...." Ha.
As fate would have it, a farewell turns into a reunion. The loss of one love will bring another love together
Even if only for those brief moments.. and in times like that (when she takes his hand) A moment can last a lifetime for some people...VERY, very emotional.
Thanks again, for the nice surprise, Mr. Grey... You and Molo are just a couple of "Marshmallows"...with all your emotional talk here... Ha. :-) You both just got me all "whooshy" eyed with your screen caps and your comments... What's a "Peacemaker "to do?? Ha.

My favorite is lemon meringue
Just for you, little missy...
Ha.. when I was in about the 5th or 6th grade, a friend of mine and I decided we would be clever and bake a lemon meringue pie... We got out her mom's cookbook... and made a list of all the ingredients... and then pooled our finances... and conned her mom into driving us to the commissary...( my dad was in the army)
We picked up all the ingredients...but we had some trouble finding... ONE last thing... Ha... We must have spent 10 minutes wandering around the dairy section looking for... THE CREME OF TARTAR!!!!!!!!! Ha.
Then when we finally asked where it was... and the clerk sent us over to the baking section...duh!! Did we feel like idgits... but not NEARLY so much as when we got back to my friend's house and her mom left us to our own resources as we started mixing up our ingredients.... NEITHER one of us had ever made a meringue before. Needless to say.. we didn't make on then either... SCRAMBLED eggs is what we go on the top of our luscious lemon pie... UGH!!! Actually... once you got past the top... the rest of the pie was pretty tasty as I recall... :-)
Now lest the Grey Guy thinks he's been right about my cooking all along... Keep in mind I was only about 11 years old...
Not long after that, I told this same story to my grandmother... who took pity on me and taught me her trade secrets for cream pies... and NOW.... No more scrambled eggs.... Ha. (Thanks Grandma!)
PS... My favorite comfort pie... Chocolate meringue... of course. :-)

Kyle... as a usual "spectator" only of your thread... first let me apologize for butting in on what should just be about your posters... but in response to some of the RIDICULOUS statements made by... one or two ... or still one individual...
Funny thing about "truth"... it is not open to interpretation.. And yet...sometimes it is easy to interpret from where the "interpretation of truth" originates... based on the words of the interpreter. (try saying THAT 3 times fast) :-)

Thanks Chris... for making a little more sense out of what I was trying to say...
PS... Just for the record...the song I referred to was "Guide me "O" Thou Great Jehovah... not Guide me "On" etc... I went in and edited my post because I googled the hymn after I made my last post... and realized my mistake... maybe I will get smarter (someday) and learn to do that FIRST) ha. :-)
