  1. his darker side having no redeeming qualities in Two Rode Together.

You have raised some very thought provoking points here, little missy. It is true...Stewart was very UN-likable especially at the beginning of that film...but as things progressed...at least for me...it was almost like he was able to shake off some of that outer layer. He had a persona under the persona so to speak... and he was just letting the "good life" motivate him a little too much at the beginning... he still had his edge at the end...but he was at least a little less self serving it seemed to me. Still not an "all around great guy" but better able to see a bigger picture than himself.

Wayne's dark side always has a boundary, and a cause.

I agree, though I sometimes wonder about the "boundary"... It was there....but I think there were times when it was a very tenuous hold on him.... as if at any moment he MIGHT NOT stop himself from going as "bad" as he wanted to be (a la The Searchers) ... And at the very least it always had a cause... he could be as nasty and mean as he needed to be...but usually because life or circumstances had created and caused him to be that way.

I think both men definitley had their own unique spin on "mean"....but their methods really worked well for the characters they played.

  2. Well hello there, Ms. Favell.... welcome back to the Western side of town.... :-)

I would love to paint a mirror for your mantle, providing it fits in with Bronxie's ideas.....however, I think you should remember that I also painted my living room pink just a few short years ago.... My talent is extremely questionable

I imagine we can coordinate something.... With her decorating sense... and your willingness to try new bold painting techniques... and my veritable "blank slate" here to work with... My living room ought to be making the cover of house beautiful in no time. :-) PS....we will have to skip the pink though...we painted the kidling's room that color a couple of years ago... (a nice pale icy pink) and you'd have thought he was going to go blind just looking at the color....he won't even use the "p" word....he just call's it "faded red" . Ha... :-)

Sounds like you have been earning your Western Stripes to be sure... I haven't seen either of the two titles you mentioned. I will have to look up The Border Incident....but the Jimmy Stewart one is on my list. (PS... as a side note...I have been having way too much fun w/ my new Jimmy movie pack that I got for Christmas...I have 2 more to go... and I so far I have enjoyed some old favorites and made some new faves too)

I hope you will get a chance to see Silverado...it is one of my favorites among the more "contemporary" westerns.... although it is what...20 some years old? Ha...I guess I am getting old...pretty soon all the movies that came out in MY day and age will be called...Classics...or at least ..."vintage" (No need to start THAT sort of debate around here....)

Silverado's best asset is the "simple" western storyline...that and the terrific cast. I love the way they stuck to the old standard "good guys/bad guys right on down to the "shoot out in the street" And there is a lot of "fun" in the way the story is told too....along with the "fighting and shooting, and such. As well as some very interesting side stories... all in all...a nice way to spend a couple of hours...

Hope it is warmer out your way than it is here...bundle up and have a nice evening! :-)

  3. PASTMAN!!! You stole my thunder! HA! :-) I was going to post this exact same one from Pure Prairie League after we got finished going back and forth in the "next line" thread...and I forgot... I've loved this song ever since it came out...about a gazillion years ago.... It is still very high on my favorite list..Sooo....age old question... Is it AMY?? or AIMEE??? I don't have the album... Inquiring minds wanna know... :-)

    PS....Jake...nice choices.

  4. a good night's sleep!

HA. I am glad to hear those bubbles worked! When I was a kid, we used to go visit my Grandma and she and my aunt would always watch that show every Saturday... One of my little brothers always called it "The Bubble Show". :-)

PS...glad you liked the "Tut"... I am still trying to figure out how come Henry Winkler had nothing better to do with his time than to stand back there and hold up the scenery... Must have been "between gigs" :-)

  5. Thanks for the Ramble Mr. Movieman!

Love, greed, action, near tangles with death all leads to a pretty exciting time

Now that sounds like a movie for me! I am hoping to get to this one soon. It is one of the Ford's I have yet to see, but I am narrowing my list down slowly but surely.

I am glad to hear such a strong recommendation from you and from April as well. Between the two of you you keep me up to date on "choice" pics for my Westerns....

How would you compare the "landscape" in this one to the other Fords? That has always seemed to be such a big part of so many of his films...

And PS.... Glad to hear you liked the music in this one...I liked the 3 Bad Men tunes better than you did as I recall, but I do know that especially with silents, a good score really enhances the story telling. So that is something to look forward to with this one as well.

PSS....I am looking forward to getting to tape Silverado tomorrow night... We are overdue on our chat for that one too.

  6. Steve doing Foggy Mountain Breakdown

CAR-O-LINA!! I wonder how fast I could get my kitchen floor clean mopping it while I listened to THAT!!

Here is my all time fave for Steve: ( I once saw him do this on --I think it was the Tonight Show. And he was on ROLLER SKATES! But I couldn't find THAT...this will have to do...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP7AJiQM2RI

PS...hello Little Miss Butterscotch.... I am sure you've already seen it...but I LOVE the Eddy Duchin Story...I think the first time I ever saw it I was about 12...and my mom and I stayed up late to watch it....we both were a bawling mess by the time it was over!! :-)

  7. Muppet-posting Disease

I think it is contagious....we may be terminal.. :-)

HA!!!! Beaker!!!! (I love it when his violin starts smoking!)

Here is one I almost posted for you last night instead of Rita Moreno....I could be mistaken...but there are likely KILTS involved...but they just aren't showing...

  8. "Milky Way" bars and "3 Musketeers" bars

NOW we're talkin' chocolate! :-) PS...I agree this thread is a lot of fun. I am enjoying checking out all the music and hearing about all the favorites. WHOEVER thought this thing up sure had a good idea... :-)

  9. you always explain yourself well

Well thank you for that...but I think sometimes I am a bit jumbled...YOU on the other hand have a real grasp on these two guys...you know your Beatles.

I think for sure we can say they are both "poets" and their lyircs and their music prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt. And they were almost "meant" to work together...at least it was that way for a very long time. I wonder what either of them would have accomplished on his own apart from the other.

So what...You got nothin' to say on the whole Hershey/Nestle debate???? :D

  10. Who was the better composer and why?

Whoa... now you got me. That is not something I think I am qualified to answer. Oh...do we have to choose??? :-)

I dated a kid in college ( a gazillion years ago) and he was a HUGE Beatles fan. If you asked him that question he would have gone for Lennon...hands down.

I am only going off my limited knowledge here.... I am in no way "educated" enough to answer this as I have favorites written by both individuals as well as ones they wrote together.... Overall....I think Lennon was more of a "thinker" w/ his music...more depth in a lot of his lyrics and melodies too.. but McCartney has more "flair" and many of his songs are more entertaining....I don't know if I am explaining this well at all....I am sure I will not say this in a way that makes sense. But they are both better in different ways....

PS...You might as well have asked "What's better...Hershey's or Nestle's??? Both make chocolate... but I like HERSHEY's for just the standard chocolate bar...yet I prefer NESTLE's Crunch bar over the Hershey's Krackle... I know...leave it to me to turn this back around to chocolate again. :-)

PS...what is YOUR opinion...on the composers and/or the candy??? :-)

  11. Hiya Chris...

My favorite scene all revolves around the horse trading in the first ten minutes. The setlling down the horses, the sxchange with the sheriff, the shaving the wood with Bond as they negotiate. It all is so natural.

It was a nice insight into the character of all three men. Very entertaining too.

At the close the little shots of Johnson and Dru and then Carey and his lady, especially the little kiss, show it is just starting but it will all end well. I think the final shot of the colt coming up the river bank says perfectly it is a new start and a new life.

I agree...It was a great way to wind up the end of the film... Is it the end or just the beginning? (sounds like a song) Ha.

  12. Hiya Molo...

Did I just do a ramble on John Loves Mary?

HA! Yes...yes you did! Nicely done.

I like my light esapist fare.

Me too....I have an entire "movie drawer" filled with old faithfuls...just there to make me "lose track of the time" not to think or get too bogged down in the story. It is nice to "escape" now and then.

This one of yours sounds like it fits that description nicely. I will keep an eye out for it...

PS...thanks, Chris for bringing up the other Arnold title too....that guy has more movies out there than I ever knew...I need to check my "list"...

  13. You are having wayyyyy too much fun with these little critters tonight!!! HA!!! (I think this one is my favorite of all the one's you've posted so far!) It just kept adding "layers"...too hilarious...I kept saying...this is my favorite part...and then another animal would come out and I would have to rethink...the fish! No..the penguin....no wait....the bear!

I think my favorite Muppet routine of all though would have to be...hmmm....

    Anything with.... AN-I-MAL!!

  14. Hey there, little Miss Butterscotch!

i usually love loillipops too Well...that..plus the sweet story you told about you and your dad w/ the Lifesavers....made me think of THIS...

Ha...you know I think this commercial was playing when we BOTH were little kids....the only difference is...I was watching it as a "first run" and you (ya little whippersnapper) were likely seeing it as a Nick at Nite "Retro-commercial" HA! (I'm feeling older and older by the minute) :-)

  15. "I See The Cross"

Hey there Movieman.... thanks for this post...I had never heard of this artist, let alone the song. Very good sound. (I especially liked the "a cappella" part at the end.

Some of my favorite more contemporary Christian artists would be Michael Card (the first time I heard him sing The Nazarene....I thought it was Dan Fogelberg) and also Fernando Ortega and Twila Paris.

I think I am more "blue grassy" than you though...and one of my newest favorites would have to be from a group I just discovered this past year called "Blue Highway"... called "Someday".(also an "a cappella" song) Not to put too morbid of a "spin' on things....but my husband and my parents all have instructions on how to use this song should the day come when they need to make plans for me... it is something I want played loud and strong on that day....

    Anyway....

*The Beatles!!* Help...Hello Goodbye...Twist and Shout...Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band... When I'm Sixty Four... Eleanor Rigby...Blackbird...Golden Slumbers...Do You Want To Know a Secret.... Shall I go on?????????? :-)
