I wanted Wayne to get his finger caught between the rope and the saddle horn and come in with it all mangled. Then Walter Brennan would look at it and say, "That finger isn't going to be much good to you."
Jack...that story is a crack up. That is some book you've got there. I bet you are having a lot of fun going through and finding all these gems.
I've never seen either of these two films...but Red River is on my Wanna See list....I wonder though (never having seen the story I don't know if this would have worked....) I could almost see that scene played out better w/ Brennan's finger on the chopping block...that to me sounds like the kind of chatter he and Duke used to pass back and forth in Rio Bravo. Either way...it does sound like a classic moment and quite the missed opportunity for the Duke. :-)

haven't watched an awards show in at least ten years. I'd much rather watch what they are nominated for then have to listen what they have to say.
I get sick most of the time watching all the hype that goes into "The Oscars" program itself...and all the "glitzy" parading around...I can live without it.
As far as the yearly tribute on TCM....sometimes it is fun to watch the films they choose and find out some of the stories that get related by RO.... but it is not necessarily my favorite TCM "thing".
One thing about this year's promo...you gotta admit it's way cool....I've gotten to see it a couple of times now and each time I notice something new....I like the little action scenes that are mixed in around and in front of the big screen and the set changes with each film.
Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so some might not agree...

That is a very nice thing for you to say... but I think the others here have done an excellent job in jogging my memory...and once in a while I must get lucky and all the little rocks roll in the right direction. :-)

I have only seen this film once... a long time ago...and I should likely view it again before commenting.... I don't think it left that great an impression on me at the time...but after reading through all these interesting comments...I should really watch it again to give it a fair shake.
Judy, just as herself, could never compete with the memory of Madeleine but she lacked the strength to walk away from this devastating and slightly deranged situation.
ddalehall... Keep in mind that I am working off of memories that are about 20 years old...but this point you make here is VERY important in understanding how the end of this film turns out so badly for all involved. If anyone really loved anybody...I think Judy loved Scotty.
He on the otherhand was really only was "hypnotized" by his perception of Madeleine and I think those who have been usiing the word "obsessed" are right on target...and the minute he realized his obsession had been nothing more than a set up...he hated what he once thought he loved.
But again...my memory of all this is likely jumbled up by all the many rocks that have mangaged to become entangled in the cobwebs in my brain over all the years...so I am sure for this lesson I probably only want to get graded on my attendance...and not on my homework. :-)

Well, birthday wishes all around to one and all, then. Have a wonderful day. :-)

Thanks Chris and Patful for the encouragement...but I will have to see though...I may not have enough hair (you know...to pull out while trying to figure out how the whole thing works)...If #12 doesn't end up working out...maybe 13 will be my lucky number and I'll give it a try then. I will see what happens. Because when it comes to actual (worthwhile) knowledge of classic film...
the biggest idiot... Patful...excuse me, but I think you are wearing my nametag by mistake. :-)
Good luck everybody!!

Plenty of fluids and plenty of rest....hopefully you will be better soon!
PS...Chris...I think you folks are going to have a lot of fun...I am looking forward to looking in....but I know this is way out of my ball park ....still I will enjoy watching from the stands.

38 The Three Stooges host a Super Bowl Party:
Larry: Hey Moe...do you think someday we can get cable so we don't have to stand like this just to get a picture on the tv? I can barely reach the rabbit ears from here.
Moe: Quiet you lame brain.. and hold still...It's almost time for the big game to start.
Curley: Hey Moe...Hey Larry....I think I left our snacks over there... woopwoopwoopwoop.
Moe: Why I oughta murder ya...

Well, at least I didn't post pictures of Audrey Hepburn
That would have done me in for sure.... (I think I am suffering from delayed "Christmas Goodie Guilt Syndrome" ...usually it kicks in about New Year's day....I am a week behind schedule...must mean that I am becoming apathetic...oh great...maybe I better go have a cookie....that always makes me feel better) :-)

Hey..what is this??? The "Make Kathy feel guilty for every bite of food she ever takes from now until eternity by posting all these beautiful pics of slim and lovely KIM thread"???? (Just try fitting THAT all onto the subject line!!) :-) Great photos, there Miss G.
a new biography on DeMille is nearing completion
I bet that would be an interesting read. I never really heard that much about him, but I have enjoyed many of his films over the years.
*JAKE* ...Happy New Year to you too.
*CineMaven* ....thank you for your kind words...you are being far too generous to me....but I COULD say...right back at ya, ma'am.
PS. *April* ...nice try trying to use all THIS temptation to get that Grey Guy to ramble....I am starting to think he may be a lost cause. :-)

Their trying to pit us against each other Frank!
Not me...
You have to watch the Quiet One. She's sneaky.
NOT ME!! :-)

Ms Cutter...if I may...I remember way back at the beginning....Miss Maven had suggested the topic of Mildred Pierce. (specifically w/ regard to her "love" for Veda and the way she may have "spared the rod" too much)
I just got a copy of that film in from the library this week ( I actually ordered it LONG ago to refresh my memory on this film...I can't believe it took so long to get that one in)....
At any rate...if any one is willing...at some point it might be good to get to that one...but I do not want to sway any other class members...
Vertigo or some other choice that is equally as interesting would likely be just as good.....I am sure there are many films that could be discussed on this topic...I will just wait till everyone else chimes in and you make your decision...
Just thought I would cast a vote for Ms. Pierce...since she is sitting on top of my tv set even as we speak.... Thanks for your time . :-)

Hi Jake... thanks for the youtube...I don't know if this is an actual quote or not...but I once heard that he said....
Give me any two pages of the Bible and I'll give you a picture.
And the funny thing about that is that though it may sound like he is trivializing things....I really don't think he was....he just really knew how to take a good story, add some plausible "what if's" and run with it.
This film has always been a favorite...and I have always maintained that if I could just take a tour through some of those old Bible stories as they happened....the "Red Sea" would have been on my list of stops for sure. DeMille does a good job of taking us there in the way he portrays it....I hold that scene up to several other more modern tellings of this event and the newer ones all come up falling way short of the mark.

The Remains of the Day,
Grey Guy....I second FXReyman on this film....VERY repressed butler....also an excellent story. The first time I ever saw it, the QT and I both turned to each other at the end and almost at the same time quoted our favorite "Pink Floyd" line (From "Time") "Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way..."
-
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS:"...Jack, Rohanaka...both those lines you cited are absolutely priceless. The tone you mention Rohanaka, in Anne Baxter's voice was deadly.
Hi CineMaven... and yes...deadly is the right word....the level of disgust in her voice was pure venom. The way she trivializes the task is a bullseye right to his ego. I could almost picture some drunken old housewife saying the same thing to her henpecked husband.."You couldn't even pick up your socks"(as if killing God's appointed messenger was just as easy)....but I don't think even a drunken old housewife could have gotten nearly the same level of hate that she manages to spew at him....it is a very well placed dagger.
the scene with the three girls on the rock with the wind blowing through their hair and their arms up near the faces
That is a part of the Red Sea scene....and it is very posed...but it is so beautiful...I imagine it was a tribute to similar "painted" Biblical scenes you sometimes find in classic religious art...very dramatic. But yes....very staged.
Another family favorite during that scene is with the one woman who is toward the back of the line when they are crossing the sea and she turns around and see's the Egyptian army finally showing up on on the scene...she drops her basket and screams something like, "The Chariot's....AHH...run for your lives..." I know we aren't supposed to find it "funny", but my husband and I always get a kick out of imitating her at that moment....one of those goofy family things, I guess. :-)
Jack....I used to love when this film came on at Easter (still do) but when I married my husband...he had it on VHS and now we watch it probably a couple of times a year. (He's had this tape, longer than he's had me...I married him for his VHS collection...ok....not really....but it was a nice extra.) :-)

Fisticuffs were avoided however, and Gloria and I continue on our way in the next frame
Yeah...but if I recall....If you're THAT guy....a) you're a slimy snake oil salesman (Oh say it isn't so) and
you end up "losing" her in the end...and you have to eat her cooking--which is, shall we say, LESS than four star. Of course...if FRANK gets to keep her...then he'd have to eat that cooking every night...and eventually I am sure that would catch up w/ him...and he'd likely be "done in" by it before his time...leaving her free to go back to you.... I will let you two duke it out if you want to change sides... :-)
Thanks all for the recommendations folks...I will do some looking around in here and see what I can find at the library too. Sound like several of these might be films I'd like to check into.
PS... And I agree with your recommendations for Quiet Gal. Crossfire is a good Gloria starter film. In a Lonely Place, The Big Heat, and Human Desire are the heavy Gloria pics, and my very favorite of hers, too.
Grey Guy....is THAT the only rambling you are going to give these folks on IALP???????? tsk tsk... :-)

rugged.Yes, THIS Edward Andrews:
NO way. I have seen him in at least a gazillion different roles....I can't think of anything specific, but usually when I see him I think of things like a "weasly" banker or politician type guy...or a snooty well to do guy...or even an exasperated sales clerk type guy...but never "rugged"...that must have been SOME acting!

Champagne for Caesar
Thanks Chris...I will look it up! :-)

Is there a bad Ronald Colman movie? I don't think so. And I agree, MissG, it would be fun to see Life with Father and George go head to head....
Hiya Jack....I don't know if there is a bad Colman movie or not, as I can't say I have seen as many as some on here...but my guess would be that if there WERE a bad one...he was still GOOD in it! :-) PS...April ---I love Life With Father too. That would have been a fun combo.
Regarding The Ten Commandments....true...very campy in the acting department...(my favorite line...when she tells Pharoah to bring back his sword stained in Moses' blood...he answers her..."I will....to mingle with your own." And then later on when he comes back...she says.."You couldn't even kill him." I love the tone in her voice...
But the best part about the film (other than just the story in general) is the special effects. They are all very well done...but that parting of the Red Sea takes the cake...its way better than a lot of computer generated stuff you might see nowdays....very beautiful and terrible all at the same time.

Beautiful snow scene....but OOOOOO...looks chilly!!!
Sweet Kitty video....
And here's some HUGS, everyone, just because
2u2 little lady!

PS...Try to stay warm. Here's a little something extra to help warm you up too...OK....maybe it will, maybe it won't...but hey...it looks like chocolate!!! :-)

Have a nice day. :-)

Well hello there Molo and April....thanks for the kind invite to stop in and say hi.
WOW--ZA, I say!!! I have been noticing for sometime that there is a lot more to Miss Grahame than I ever realized...but some of the photos and caps in this thread are quite "Wow-za" (I say again)
I have to confess I know little to nothing about her as a human being...but I imagine if I get time to read through some of these many posts I may learn more about her...but I also can see that there is a lot of interesting info on many of her films as well...so that is good to have as well since....well...you know...my Wanna See list just can't seem to control itself anyway..might as well load it up some more.
I also have to confess that until recently...whenever I thought of GG, I only picture her like this:
; (PS..Frank and Molo...which one of you is which in this picture???)
In fact, I never even knew what her name was until I started seeing it around here this past summer. Until then I only knew her as "that lady who played Ado Annie and was also in I'ts a Wonderful Life"...It appears I have some catching up to do.
Between the two characters...I have to go with Ado Annie as my favorite, but only because she is just so hilariously funny. Violet is a much more sympathetic role, to be sure....but Ado Annie just cracks me up. I grew up watching Oklahoma as a kid (I have only seen IAWL a handful of times, but I have seen Oklahoma....A LOT more)....and when I was in high school a friend of mine tried out for that role in our school play so I heard those songs day and night from her as we were practicing...( I was more of an "Aunt Eller" kinda gal) But alas...it was not to be for either of us because there were some "issues" with the whole production, and our teacher decided to drop Oklahoma altogether and we ended up doing Carousel instead) :-)
I actually think I prefer the "All or nothin'" song over "I Cain't say no"...but they are both a riot, and your dear Ms. Grahame is spot on in her performance. ("Don't bother waitin' up for me!") :-)
So... all you Grahame-a-****....where should a gal like me start if I want to better acquaint myself w/ your friend? I keep hearing about this "In a Lonely Place" film....I put it on my Wanna See List...what else do you think I should add???

Hello folks...just a brief ramble on The Late George Apley...what fun. I had never even heard of this film until tonight and I almost turned it....until I heard RO's introduction and I became curious. Very entertaining story and Colman was just perfect in his "perfection". And after the film, RO pegged this story perfectly....charming.
And I dearly loved the part where Mr. Apley is put in his place a bit...by someone from (of all places) .....Kansas City!!!! Something along the lines of...."Twenty years from now, I don't think I could stand having a son-in-law as impressive as you!" :-)
I really liked the ending a lot...and PS...April, Barb, and Wendy...I remember discussing this a while back....In this one, RC's hair is exactly the right mix of dark and gray and exactly the right cut in the back (the front was too "slicked back" still) to match the QT. Take a look at him in this film...thicken out the mustache and comb his hair a bit to the side....then put him in a Tshirt and jeans....and he could BE someone from Kansas City... (that is until he opened his mouth!) :-)

Hello there Molo!!
I hope you will join us in the Gloria thread. I would love to hear your thoughts!
Well...I would but if I did, all I could do was talk about her role in It's a Wonderful Life...and Oklahoma's Ado Annie. Those are the only two of her films I can really say I am familair w/. I would likely be your most G rated poster in the GG thread! :-)
Actually I feel I'm falling further and further behind myself.
Well at least YOU have had a reasonable reason...your mom comes first (as all mom's should!) :-) But since I hear she is doing so well lately ( WOOHOOO on that by the way) and now that I have been seeing your posting more regularly around here...HMMM.... I may have to go and purchase some more rope!! :-)

Wow Clore...what fun I am having reading your posts. My Wanna See List is growing in leaps and bounds just in reading all the interesting info you've provided. I have heard of only a few of the titles you have mentioned (and have seen even less than that) so there is plenty for me to sort through in adding to my list. You certainly do know your westerns.
PS...I enjoyed the stories about the occasional "tip of the hat" borrowing that some westerns give, perhaps in homage to others....that in fact is what started this thread....borrowing from Miss Goddess on her Movie Rambles idea. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. :-)

Which 3-5 films would you pick to highlight a career or a genre?

Duke Westerns: this was really hard...and I could probably end up making another list tomorrow w/ several other choices (But I'd likely still keep 1 and 2 and just make 3 more choices to go along w/them) Did I mention this was hard?
The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
True Grit
Hondo
Aw..man....I picked a star and a genre...despite your instructions.....AHH..did I mention this was REALLY hard?
