  1. Hey there April and everybody else too.

I am so excited to finally be able to have something to say in this long and thouroghly enjoyable yet out-of-my-scope-of-knowledge group of posts. I really am enjoying all these wonderful insights to Judge Priest, etc....and I am REALLY enjoying all this chat about Mr. Rogers...(no, not the one in the neighborhood....although I am a fan of that one too) Truth is, I don't know much about Will Rogers, but have always enjoyed his little quotes or sayings...And April I am going to print these off and share them w/ the QT because there are some really priceless gems on here....and some are even timlier now than they were way back in the day.

This one is not necessarily my favorite....but in light of some of the grief you have to take from a certain Grey individual around here....it could come in handy....

Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice doggie" until you can find a rock (Or a nice icy cold rope!!)

Oh Grey Guy...I am sorry....but I just had to say it...truth is I am still stinging from some of those mean "blechy cooking" remarks you made about me last week. :-) I never realized how much of a grudge I was carrying until my dear friend April woke up the "inner" Rogers in me. I feel so much better now....Carry on folks. :-)

  2. Sims, hands down.

    and why?

I don't ever recall anyone else being so totally into the mindset of the man as well as Sims.( Both at the beginning and the ending of the story) When I read the way he is described and the dialogue between him and other characters, I immediately get a mental picture of Sims portrayal...and that may of course be due in part to having seen the film before reading the story. But I have since seen several other renditions of this tale, and he always comes out on the top of my list for this particular character.

  3. So, did anybody catch The Tall Stranger

Yes. I did not get carted off and forced to eat at a Chinese restaurant this time. :-) It was a very nice little western. But I couldn't get over the wear and tear on Joel Macrea. He sure looked a lot "puffier" and a bit more "weary" and worn in this one than I remember him looking in Stars in My Crown, but the difference in his appearance worked for me because the two characters were so different as well. There was only like 7 years between the two films, but a lot can happen in seven years, I guess.

I thought overall it was a pretty enjoyable film...a little mystery, (who and where was the guy w/ the golden rifle, etc) a little romance, some tough guy tension, and plenty of action. I also enjoyed seeing old Sherriff Roy Coffee from Bonanza in the cast as the leader of the little wagong train group. I always liked him on Bonanza...I don't know...maybe it was just his name....Coffee. :-)

I missed out on the horse's eye color. Good catch, April. That would have been pretty cool to see. (I used to have a blue eyed dog, so I think it is interesting to see that trait in certain animals)

Jack-you, me and Bronxgirl need to start a "Cleaning to the Classics" club. :-) She was telling me last week about cleaning house to some of her fave musicals. But we don't have to stick only w/ musicals...we could do westerns or comedy, or romance. The possibilities are almost endless (silent's probably would only work if you are folding clothes or something so you could stay right in front of the tv to read the captions.) Ok...everybody grab a swiffer duster and check out the TCM schedule....we can make this happen. :-) (Ha!)

  4. She told the Doctor that if he didn't fix her soon she was going to walk out of the hospital and head down Hull St

HA! Your mom sounds like a feisty gal. I hope the pacemaker procedure goes smoothly and then things can proceed full steam ahead from there. Will continue to pray for you both.

Nice ramble you all on The Misfits. I've never seen this one and I know little about Gable's final days so I am very curious now after having read all this. I will certainly check it all out...my famous wanna see list is always expandable when it comes to a good addition like the one you've been describing here.

Best wishes again to your mom. Keep your chin up. It sounds as though you are both keeping a good attitude and that is a lot of the battle right there. Keep in touch.

  5. Rio Grande, which I think everyone ought to just LISTEN to once

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on this. Did you make a conscious effort to only listen or were you just busy and had it on as you were doing other stuff? I imagine only listening gave you a lot more in terms of the emotion behind the words as the actors spoke, because you really had to pay attention to what they meant as well as what they said. (does that make sense?)

I often have movies on in the background while I am doing other things about the house and I know what you mean by not being able to resist looking up at what was happening on screen. Many a household chore has gone undone (at least temporarily) due to me getting caught up in a movie that happens to be going on while I am supposed to be cleaning house. Who wants to scrub the bathtub when "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen" is going on in the other room? :-)

I am going to head off to get myself all ready for The Tall Stranger. I have dinner plans already in progress, so hopefully the whole "Let's eat chinese food" thing will be better thwarted this time should anything like that occur. :-)

  6. I read the book long before I saw the film and this story has always been a favorite. (I love the bit about the A.P.) which brings me to my point...I think one of the best things about this story is the mix of tragedy and sorrow, fear and hate, and love and happiness....it is quite a combination. But Dickens is always good at that.

And whoever mentioned Alec Guiness....I recall the first time I saw this film and was just shocked at seeing the dapper young ObiWan in all his finery. I was in my very early twenties at the time and before that moment I had only seen him in Star Wars and The Bridge on the River Kwai. He was such a pup in this one.

  7. Danny Kaye plays an absent-minded dreamer

Would you believe that The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was at the library the other day and I passed it by...silly me. I read the story in High School though and as I recall I thorougly enjoyed it. I thought about checking out the film, but passed it up as I already had my "limit" and did not want to put anything back. I just got a call from the library recently though, to tell me some of my special orders are in, so maybe TSLWM will still be there and I can check it out too. (then I will have that song stuck in my head for ANOTHER week) :-) Oh well, I could do worse.

  8. I sincerely and humbly apologize to you for any offense, real or imagined, you may have taken with regard to my post. And I will not argue with you or anyone else on this issue, as I feel it is not an appropriate place for this sort of discussion. But for purposes of clarification, I will respond briefly to only a few of your comments:

If you will read very carefully, you will not find in any way shape or form any reference from me as to what belief you may or may not have with regard to religion. To say otherwise would be a gross misrepresentation of both my post to you and my intent in posting. I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and simply hoping that you may have only perceived I might be making such an implication, as I clearly did not say or imply anything with regard to who is or is not a Christian or who has or does not have a personal faith of any kind. So there would be no cause for you to take offense with regard to this issue.

And also I did not in any way imply that I think there should be some sort of censorship of any and all parodies and/or controversial films about religious topics. To say otherwise would be reading into my post something that was not in any way intended nor implied.

Again, my purpose in posting was not to deprive anyone of his or her freedom of speech. Certainly you have every right to express yourself as you see fit. And so do I.

I wish you well in your endeavors to share whatever points of view you may have with regard to this and any other subject you so choose here on this website and anywhere else you may choose to post. Please enjoy your personal freedom of speech at leisure (as each of us are entitled) and do not in any way consider my post as an implication that you should not freely express yourself as you see fit. And I respectfully and humbly remove myself from any further conversation with regard to this topic as I see little point in arguing with you or anyone else. My intent was not to cause you to be offended, but rather to ask you to consider how your actions may be viewed as offensive to others and to respectfully suggest that with regard to this subject, perhaps after so thoroughly discussing this subject over and over again on this website, there were now better places for you to express yourself. But as I also mentioned in my post, my opinion is of little consequence and you are certainly free to disregard any or all of it as you like.

And so having said that, please rest assured that you will have no further cause to be offended by anything else I may say on this subject as I will follow my own advice and seek to post my own opinions on this matter in other, more approrpriate venues.

I will only add in closing that I speak to you now and always with nothing but sincere respect and I hold no ill will toward you or anyone else who may post on this website. And I hope if nothing else, I have made that crystal clear.

  9. Michaela...I am so very sorry to be writing this to you, but I am so truly offended by the film clip in this link you posted on this thread. And it affects me in such a way that I feel compelled to speak out. I seriously considered a private message to you instead of this public post, but I believe it may be time to share this with the entire group here as I have held my peace for a very long time.

I want to tell you, with sincere respect that I know this issue is very important to you and many others who post on this website.I would not in any way attempt to deprive any of you of your right to speak freely on this or any other subject. But in your zeal to express yourself so frequently and so thoroughly regarding this issue, many of your posts (along with those of numerous others) have bordered on open and outright hostility toward Christians and people of faith. And I for one, grow weary of it. I have done my best to remain silent in the face of many, many digs, hateful comments, and outright insults aimed toward people of faith in these oh so numerous threads concerning gay marriage and proposition 8. But this particular link on this particular thread is so meanspirited and disrespectful, I now feel compelled to speak.

And while I have no desire whatsoever to become involved in a back and forth argument with you or anyone else, I have to ask...what in the world could possibly have convinced you that this was an appropriate link to post here on this website? It is hatefilled, irreverent, blatantly hostile, and dare I say...intolerant toward people of the Christian faith, the Bible, and most importantly the person of Jesus Christ, who many happen to revere and even consider to be God incarnate. I find your decision to post this very disappointing.

Whether or not you agree with Christians or the Bible or with ANYTHING Jesus may have ever said or not said...there is no excuse for posting a link to a film clip that displays such hateful and disrespectful images and dialogue as this. I am sure there are plenty of other websites devoted to the subject you are seeking to promote if you want to post a link that makes fun of people you disagree with. But whether you intended to or not, by posting here, you have insulted many of your fellow posters on a website that is supposed to be open to everyone, regardless of their politics, sexual preference or personal faith.

Perhaps your motivation is that you believe there are many who would find this link interesting or that would enjoy this sort of humor. But I am here to tell you that if there are people like that on this website (as I am sure there are) they are all more than capable of finding such a link on their own. Folks who have such views of Christianity have no trouble finding such sources for their entertainment.

And I would also like to ask you to consider what would be the reaction of most people on here if I were to start a thread celebrating the OPPOSITE point of view to the one you and so many others have been so zealously promoting. What if I were to suddenly start creating multiple threads in multiple forums all proclaiming a much different point of view than the one you hold, and then perhaps I chose to back up my opinions by posting links similar to this one:

    http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/article/20081112/NEWS01/811120369

There are always two sides to every story... but you and I both know that there would be LITTLE to no tolerance to the telling of this sort of information on this site if I were to create such a thread even once on here...let alone time and time again.

I do not write any of this to be unkind. And certainly I could just stop looking at all these many threads if I wanted to avoid this topic, but as I mentioned in my one and only other reply to this topic on another thread, I am gaining a great deal of insight into the thoughts and mindset of many people on here, some like you, whom I consider friends. And it is causing me a great deal of distress as to how to reconcile such personally offensive attacks on things that hold dear.

I realize that my opinion is likely of little consequence to most people. And I am also aware that it is likely as unpopular as it is inconsequential. But I say this with sincere respect to you and anyone else who may have any agenda here...and in the interest of friendship and with the sincerest of all possible motives. May we please put aside our differences and enjoy our common ground. With regard to all your numerous postings of this subject on this website...you've made your point..you've had your say...now (at least on this website) can you please give it a rest.

  10. Hi Molo...I will pray for you and your mom that God will lift you up and give you peace about this whole situation and that he will give the doctors wisdom and skill as well.

This will sound a bit mushy maybe...but as a mother I have to tell you...You are behaving as every mom hopes her child will someday when she reaches that certain age. Parents always feel like they are the ones who should be watching out for their kids...no matter how old they get. But eventually time has a way of turning that around and eventually the kids start to feel the need to care for mom and dad. And when the time does finally come for the parent to be helped and cared for...it is a very good thing to see a son like you taking care of the one who cared for him.

    Blessings to you,

    Kathy

  11. "I don't know where I'll be then...but I'll know about it...I'll be happy."

(Hold off on that wake there Knute...you guys are just too good for us "amateurs" :-) But don't stop we're enjoying the show) :-)

Here's a line from the film that started this whole idea...

"I want to see you and your wife right away about Dorothy"....

  12. Hey --anyone have anything to say about The Tall Stranger? (coming on this Thurs 6:30 PM) The title seemed familiar like maybe someone has discussed it in the past...but I did not find anything...I was thinking I might try to catch this one...that is if my husband doesn't decide to pull a fast one on me and ask to go out for Chinese food again (I am still sad about missing The Tin Star....tough break for me--but the egg drop soup WAS delish.) :-)

  13. Patty McCormack in THE BAD SEED gets my vote

Oh our sweet little Rhoda...that kid goes past brat all the way to horrific nightmare...(and you had to post that clip, April..now that warped little song is going to play in my head all night long!) :-)

  14. This is what I think of immediately when I hear "Beautiful Dreamer

Ok...I'm ignorant...(but most folks already guessed that) ;-) What film is THAT bunch of pictures from and WHY oh WHY do you think of Beautiful Dreamer????????????
