It gets old listening to six bands do the same arrangement.
Gotta agree w/ you there. A little imagintion can go a long way when it comes to some high school half time entertainment.
What I can't get into is the "trend" that seems to have gotten into some of the highschools around here where they "stand" and play the music and then just march in between.
Back when I was a kid...we had to memorize the music...memorize our steps....learn and hit our "mark" everytime...all while the music was going on too. Oh...I sound like such a fogey...pretty soon I'll be saying we had to march uphill in a snowstorm.... :-)

Why do I like westerns
Bravo Mr. Grey!! (Or maybe after reading this, I should start calling you Mr Blackhat instead!!)
Yet another post that was well worth waiting for.
the first thing that popped into my mind was bad guys. I don't believe any genre has a better collection of bad guys. Nearly all good westerns feature an interesting "black hat."
You can't have a decent "good guy w/out a really rotten "bad guy"...you gotta have at least a little rotten to appreciate the "goodness" in the good.
I feel a good "black hat" challenges the "white hat," thus helping to drive the story. They make the "white hat" take inventory, to examine himself and his world, to ask himself what is most important. I find this to be most unique to westerns.
Finally...a black and white conversation where we both end up talking on the same side of the table!!
Very nice post...don't make us wait "a couple of months" for another....or I am going to break out that icy cold rope. :-)

in reality they are serenading you
Ha..I like the way you're thinkin'! In reality....everytime I hear "Katherine" I almost get my back up as that's what my mom called me when I was in trouble and it wasn't even my name! Ha! (I suppose just plain old Kathy could be a derivative of Katherine OR Kathleen...so I'll go with the kinder gentler one and use your reasoning that they must have been singing to me. :-)
"marching" type music
As I recall from my high school days...we did a lot of "movie themes" for some reason instead of the old tried and true marching tunes...
Of the ones I can recalll...aside from How the West was Won....we did the Theme from Superman (the movie)...we also did Rocky, and the theme from Jaws...oh...and not sure if this is a "movie" theme....but was also did "Baby Elephant Walk" :-) Oh...and one Halloween we did the theme song to the Alfred Hitchcock tv series. Ha!
We were a very small school compared to most in the area around us...so our band was pretty small (about 60) and I think our teacher just wanted to get a bit more creative w/ the musical choices so we would stand out a little. I do remember a few of the old traditional marching tunes too, though. All in all...I always remember it being a lot of fun.

do you have the movie in your collection already,

Makes me want to see the movie again, that's for sure.

NOW AND FOREVER
Wow April....that sounds like a movie I may wanna see, just from the little Shirley moment you described...tell me more.
Sounds like you had a very nice evening....I am still so jealous of you getting to see classics on a big screen....still just dreaming of that out my way.
(and PS...yes I did make it through MOST of Rio Grand...though I drifted off a couple of times...I made a comment to you about it on the western ramble) :-)

Hi Barb....thanks for the youtubes....
Here's one that has always stood out for me as a "pick me up"...not just because I have always liked the music (not to mention the movie) but we also played this in marching band in highschool...so whenever I hear it I automatically start humming the "tenor sax" part as well. (and then I am suddenly overcome by the urge to march in a straight line toward the 50 yard line...) :-)
PS...I agree with Miss G....you ought to mosey on down to these parts more often!! :-)

hope this means you managed to stay awake for all of this, my
favorite of the "cavalry" pictures
Yes...and no...I was awake MOST of the time...but it was a huge battle. A couple of times I kept hearing this weird snoring sound....and then I realized it was me. :-) But I was awake for I would say about 90%. I am torn between this one and Yellow Ribbon as favorite cavalry flicks, by the way.
You must especially love it since it's "Kathleen" they're serenading
If you mean the "name" Kathleen....well...I am actually just a plain old Kathy....although my mom used to call me "katherine" when I was a kid...but only when I was in BIG trouble. :-) Or if you meant "Kathleen" the song....I have always loved that tune as it is played (though no sung) in TQM and anytime I hear it I think of that movie...or if you mean Kathleen the character....I can't think of anyone more "serenade worthy" than the "Mighty Mo" She is absolutely lovely in this one...even in black and white. :-) But maybe...if you meant all three...I should just say a simple resounding....YES.
PS-I never had any idea that old Festus was a crooner til I posted that youtube...who'da thunk? :-)

bursting at the seams with music
April...as usual you hit the nail on the head...a very timely comment w/ the showing of Rio Grande tonight...

HA! Good Grief! :-)

I would love to hear what you think of The Devil and Daniel Webster.
Hi Molo....I am looking forward to getting to this one maybe by the end of the week. I haven't had time to get to it as yet, but I remember it from highschool and would like to see the film. Will let you know when I get it watched. I would put it in and watch tonight, but I am going to go check out Rio Grande again instead...it's been a really long time since I watched that and I think it is coming on just late enough that I should manage to fall asleep right smack dab in the middle of it...if my record holds true. :-) (I hope not...am going to give it a good try anyway)
I also wanted to tell you as a friend that someone on here is giving you REALLY bad advice (I won't say just who, but his name rhymes w/ "tank crimes")
As for getting kicked off this thread, I believe your neck is safe. The key is to know that
Pappy is crappy, Coopy is poopy, and Dukey is pukey. That will get you in good around here
Not a good idea at all...We are already overdue for one hanging and you seem like such a nice guy... :-)

what a swell party this is

I love the little string of girlie leg lights! Now don't break them!
HA! I think I will go water my plants...first let me see....I need to go glue some stuff...lots of stuff (I think the bottle is nearly empty by now....) :-)

I know..perish the thought. :-)

habbit
Uh..i mean habit.
Now I have to wonder if you were laughing at my joke...or my very poor spelling....where are the spelling police when you need them...shame on me. :-)

Oh April....I just a saw that you posted Little Buttercup too...duh...that's what I get for trying to get in on here when I should be busy doing other things...still a funny song...so maybe worth seeing twice.
I was thinking about what you said about musicals...I don't think that genre would fit too well with very many westerns.
Talking about remakes....imagine if you will
High Noon...only this time... COOP busts out singin' "DO NOT FORSAKE ME OH MY DARLIN'"
Kinda changes the whole tone of the film at that point doesn't it??? :-)
-
HA.! Jack I haven't seen The Three Amigos in a LONG time...very funny. Here's another of their "all time greatest hits" :-)
-
that little girl may also have had a chance to enjoy the movie
No, she's very disabled, I don't think she is totally blind, but she has a lot of issues w/ her vision among other things. I doubt she is able to watch anything like that at all, especially w/ any comprehension. But I am sure her grandparents must be fans. It wasn't the movie soundtrack but it was a "western/southwest" music cd and had several other somewhat familiar tunes, though I can't recall which ones at the moment.

Ford westerns are full of music and dancing
I think you are right about that, Chris. One that always comes to the front for me is the scene where Liberty Valance bites the dust (literally) and then all the little folks in the cantina start dancing and singing the happiest little tune. For the life of me, I haven't been able to find it or figure out what it is...but is sure is "celebratory". :-)
-
One of the little girls at work is wheel chair bound and not really able to communicate at all, but she always has music playing in her CD player and there are speakers right behind her head so she can hear the music...she really enjoys it a lot and will usually laugh and giggle all the way through the CD. Generally it is just kiddie music. But one day, her grandma must have thought she needed a change because all of a sudden I thought I could hear the Theme song from The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly playing in the background as I was leaning over her wheelchair....and sure enough....that is what it was. My co-worker and I got a big chuckle out of it. That was quite the change from the "Old Macdonald Had a Farm" tune we were used to hearing. I just leaned over her and whispered that Clint Eastwood had nothing on her....she was too sweet to be anything but the "good". :-)

So, what color is this dress?
Hi Jack...I just got a look at that dress...oh me oh my...it is as deep deep red as her ruby red lips, no doubt.

Oh now look what you;ve done...those eyes are gonna get me creeped out for the rest of the week...month...maybe all the way til new years.

Why Do You Like Westerns?

The Big Trail is a western I'm very curious about because of its visuals
Grey Guy....having just watched this the other day for the first time...I recommend it to you very highly. I think you would enjoy it very much. And coming at a time when a lot of films were still transitioning from the way they used to make "silents" (in fact a lot of this movie made me think of the old silent film style--especially the little narrative writngs in between scenes, not to mention the way the major bad guy appears....all you have to do is LOOK at him to know what color his hat is) There is a lot to enjoy about this film along w/ the whole western aspect.
And one of the things I also liked was seeing the potential for the Duke as an actor...not quite ten years away from Stagecoach....and still a little rough around the edges as far as acting skill...but very, very promising.
