  1. Moira Lister She was wonderfully horrid.. thoroughly unlikable.. and yet she was a standout character. She was so lovely and so ugly all at the same time. Her mocking tones were over the top. But then again.. there were moments when she was spot on.. she was every inch a realist.. with a very tough outer shell. But I imagine inside.. she was one big open wound... even while she was mocking others.. I think she did it in order to hide her own pain. (because I think there was a WORLD of pain and self loathing behind that sneering smile) I could be wrong.. but that is just how I saw her. There was definitely a back story in there somewhere. It was a well played role.
  2. Oh my gosh what a brutal night! I'm glad we all survived Hello? Anyone left out there Glub, glub, glub... ha. OH my goodness.. "Brutal" is the right word for sure. I had forgotten how "brutal" it got on that little boat w/ Tyrone Power. Good golly. Almost made Walter Slezak look like a teddy bear.
  3. All aboard What a cruise!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH me that Walter Slezak. The way he just sat their rowing and rowing.. plotting and scheming. Made me want to hand them MY boot too, by the time it was over. Couldn't happen to a nice Nazi. ha. (OH me... survival at sea is NOT for the feint of heart!) PS: Jackie.. pass me the bread salad if you please.. I want to get the bottom of the bowl where all the juices have soaked into the bread. ha. (before I dive into the custard with you, that is) Meanwhile.. may I just say, yeehaw, and yippee.. Batten down those hatches, folks.. it's almost time for Cruise number two..
  4. OH my golly.. the bread one sounds delish (all except for the olives, ha I'd have to eat around them.. but I can do that!) And that watermelon cucumber is a MUST.. that sounds very absolutely refreshing!!! wowsa. I think we should have 'floating island' for dessert ABSOLUTELY!! How about.. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Floating-Islands-with-Lemon-Scented-Custard-Sauce-and-Raspberries-241879
  5. Jackie.. hope you get those recorded.. and good for you making your own Hitch collection for your daughter. (ps.. I second her bid for the Guy Kibee day.. ha.. I like her style!) So will someone set a timer for TEN minutes before the FIVE minute timer, so I can get my disc set up? And then set another timer right at EIGHT so I don't go off doing something else and forget to turn it on? That's about my speed lately HA.. so glad to hear I am not alone, young'un. . I will have to set a time to remind me to remind you to set a time.. and then you will have to set a timer to remind yourself to check in with me to let me know you got the first timer message.. and then we could set a timer for.. um.. I don't remember.. I need to set a timer to remind me what I need the timer for ha.. OH me.. the bells would be ringing for us all day long. With all these ding-a-ling-y reminders.. we should all just meet at my house.. and we can have a Lifeboat/Abandon Ship movie watching party.. ha. Come on out.. I am making meat loaf and mashed potatoes for supper.. anybody want to bring a salad or dessert??
  6. I remember writing on the board once that they should make Lifeboat and Abandon Ship! a double-feature on TCM! Yay Yay.. and hooray too! ha. And I actually went back and looked up at least part of the conversation I brought up in your Rambles Sr. thread on AS.. and ha.. you DID mention that very thing. (I also notice that I posted that I actually MISSED the beginning of Abandon Ship when it aired.. but GOLLY.. it still left such an impression on me. Very disturbing and yet quite moving too (in places) if I am remembering it all correctly. These two movies are very complimentary to one another and it should make for some interesting discussion I will really look forward to seeing them both all the way through tomorrow night. Our sister ship Ha. WOWSA, it looks like were are in for quite a ride!! Oh me.. . I have never been on anything much bigger than a paddleboat on the lake before. ha. I hope I don't get sea sick.
  7. I'm going to try to watch it, too---I can never see it enough. Even in such a limited setting, I find something new I never noticed before with each viewing. Can't wait to hear what you think of it I am so excited to finally (hopefully, if my brain works, ha) get the chance to see it. It has been on my wanna see list for AGES. OH and PS: I HIGHLY (very highly) recommend the one that is coming on later Sat. night (after Lifeboat) Abandon Ship. (Grey Dude. if you have not seen that one you REALLY need to see it.. I think it would be right up your alley.. all issues of my usually predicting wrong for you aside, HA) It is a very tense (and INtense) story. I saw it several years ago, as I recall.. and I STILL remember just being an emotional wreck after seeing it. ha. I am glad TCM is showing them together.. will be fun to compare/contrast the two, for sure.
  8. I wouldn't exactly say that, lol He was a meanie?? ha. Why am I not surprised?? Good gravy, I need to see this one again, if only just to refresh my memory since its been so doggone long since I saw it. Looked for it on youtube.. and woo hoo.. found it. Will try to watch it again sometime when I need a smile. (here Grey Dude. one to add to your list sometime.. if you want it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TUskrPAydQ Oh my gosh those chocolates look so divine.....I could eat the whole box! For YOU, little darlin' (sweets for the sweet)
  9. HELLOOOO there, my dear appointment secretary!! Rohanaka's slighly under 24 hours ahead reminder that Hitchcock's LIFEBOAT will be sailing on TCM at 8:00 pm (EST) tomorrow Woo hoo!! I LOVE the screen caps! TOO funny. Now THAT looks like my kinda cruise. Ha. (or maybe I better reserve judgment until after I see the movie.. ha) And I appreciate the helpful reminder too!! I just got my email reminder from TCM today too.. ha. (and I even put it on my google calendar as well) My next plan is to set a TIMER tomorrow night for 5 minutes before the movie starts. HA!! (what can I say.. I need all the help I can get!!) Wish me luck!! OH.. and as promised.. here is your paycheck.. some lovely chocolates, just for you!! Enjoy!! PS: Jackie.. your peacemaking arsenal Ha.. Friday would be a WELCOME addition. (wow.. if this keeps up I am going to have to build on a whole new wing to Casa Ro just to house everything.
  10. having lunch with Miss G You really ARE asking for it.. ha. Ladies, I think we should sic Friday on HIM.
  11. HA!! we were posting at the same time.. about the same thing!! ha. Jinx.. you owe me a Coke.
  12. Jackie.. TCM has a trailer for it.. so maybe that will put Friday on the scent..ha.. http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/140128/Hidden-Eye-The-Original-Trailer-.html
  13. we MUST find it! First we'll need a detective Let's call Friday.. ha. Maybe he can sniff us out a copy of it. (as long as there are no flowers around)
  14. THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES (1946) has always been my favorite A&C movie That's IT.. ha. I could not recall the name. It is one of those stories that is more or less just for fun, as I recall.. but I just remember thinking how sweet Lou is in this one.. and for once, (if I am remembering right) Bud is not a total MEANIE either. ha. I love its historical setting; the "modern-day" mystery that has to be worked through by both sets of descendents/counterparts and friends; Marjorie Reynolds; Gale Sondergaard (Billie Barnes asks her an amusing question; I won't spoil the in-joke for anyone who hasn't seen this or doesn't remember; nonetheless, Gale is criminally wasted in this throwaway role); a cute, spunky actress whose name escapes me but she's very effective as Costello's exasperated girlfriend and, inexplicably, John Shelton as Marjorie's conflicted aristocratic love interest. (whatever happened to him?) He's got a certain bland sexiness I find appealing, lol And see.. ha. you remember it way better than I do (though in my defense, I confess it has been maybe DECADES since I last saw it, ha) because I don't even remember Gale being in it.. but back when I saw it, I was so young, I likely didn't even know who she was anyway.
  15. I love Eyes in the Night, too! It would have been a sensational series, great idea! I've always been "big" on Eddie PS: Miss G and Jackie too.. ha.. "Eddie" fans unite, because I remember thinking the same thing while I was watching too.. so much so, I looked into it.. and (sorry if someone already mentioned this because I have not had time yet to read through all the posts today yet) there WAS a sequel.. The Hidden Eye (1945) but I had no luck finding it on youtube.. alas. Maybe we'll get lucky and TCM will show them both together sometime.
  16. serve me a meal and that would quiet me forever Just for you.. my special VEGGIE stew.. (eat hardy.. I know its your FAVORITE!)
  17. Cooking?! You probably fed him the hot dogs cold Oh forever more. You really are spoiling for a FIGHT right now, aren't you. Where's my hatpin.. where's my frozen rope.. break out the giant SQUID for crying out loud. Quick.. what movie can we argue over.. I think I may need to take you down a peg or two.
  18. Hot dogs and Cheerios? That's my diet! Actually, it's healthier. Your dog is eating cereal Ha.. I figured if I gave him cereal, he'd at least be getting vitamins and threw in a hot dog for the protein. Add a little water to mix it all together and I call it the "Amos Special" ha. (see.. even the DOG likes my cooking)
  19. There are blue roses. A sniff of the "Blue Rose of Forgetfulness" and one loses their memories. Evidently Quiet Gal takes a big whiff of these before she heads to the grocery store Says YOU!! ha.. I'll have you know I just went to the store this evening and I actually made it home this time WITH both the dog food AND the laundry soap... even if I DID have to go back TWICE down the laundry soap aisle before I remembered to pick it up.. and even if the dog HAS been eating hot dogs and cheerios for two days because we ran out of dog food since I forgot to buy it LAST week. ha (You know.. it's not very NICE to make fun of old people)
  20. The dog plays a major role in the film, and what he does at the end is quite something to see. "Friday" is impressive. I think your daughter would like seeing that OH my goodness.. it was FRIDAY the WONDER DOG!! Ha. Loved watching him all through the entire story. What a fun film. I know the kidling will enjoy it. (And I have to say that I think I enjoyed Edward Arnold's performance almost as much as Friday's) Thanks again for the tip!
  21. I think Quiet Gal would like the film, too Hey thanks for that link.. I only just watched the first three minutes or so, and I am already hooked.. (that doggie is going to be the star of the whole thing, isn't he??) Will give it a looksee and maybe even share w/ the kidling depending on how the story goes. (she is a true dog-fan so I bet she will at least enjoy that part, anyway.) PS: going back to Chaplin.. I likely should have said City Lights was among my tippy-top faves for him too.. but who am I kidding.. of the ones I have seen, almost all of them are first rate.
  22. Hellllooooooo Bud I like people with personality, and you have that. You're very easy to talk to Well thank you for saying that. I am probably the easiest person on here to figure out, though. Because what you see is what you get, ha. I literally write pretty much the same as the way I speak. ha. (lots of blabbage) ha. But I do enjoy a good gab. So am glad you and few others are kind enough to put up with me. And you like to fight ONLY when there is a fight worth fighting.. ha. (you know... like when I need to clear up some Grey wrongheaded thinking of some sort) But all kidding aside, I DO enjoy a good chance to chew and chomp on a story or characters or discuss the ideas and concepts behind certain movie themes, etc. So am glad you and my fellow rambling buddies are willing to let me ramble on now and then.. and I enjoy reading what others have to say too.. and hearing their opinions and ideas.. so am glad that you guys are as much fun to "read" as you are to talk with. You're almost as bad as Miss G OH pish posh.. she's as sweet as the day is long. "Bad" and "Miss G" are two things that NEVER go together in the same sentence. You have seen more than I have Maybe of the Keatons and L&H (though to be honest, it has been so long since I have seen any of the Laurel and Hardy's I could not tell you for sure which ones I have seen) but I did some checking on the Griffiths and I may be in the same boat YOU are on those.. ha. because I don't think now that I can recall seeing any of them for certain. (but I confess there may be some and I just don't remember much about them.) I know for sure I have seen clips of portions of them over the years.. but I can't put my finger on a single one that I could say I have watched all the way through. I just love how similar your daughter is to you and how Jackie's daughter is to her Well speaking only for myself, I can tell you that it is fun to see your child grow up like you .. until you hear yourself talking back to you.. with a ten year old voice. HA. (she IS a peacemaker after my own heart, I confess. ha. But she is having to learn the hard way sometimes that she must only use her "powers" for good... ha It's a work in progress) Your humor is a mud fight. And don't I know it Just a little mud-slinging among friends. I'd like to see that theme on TCM! I think Ben would have to deliver that header HA!! I can see it now.. Tonight on TCM we are showing a collection of 'Pretty-boy Nutjobs Run Amuck.. with our special guest programmer..FRANK GRIMES!! There are moments similar to The Three Musketeers, so I thought she'd like the film for that reason. She'd like Sabu We may have to sit down sometime and give it a try. And meanwhile.. ha.. the other day she had her portable dvd player with her while we were waiting for some work to be done on the car, and some lady who was waiting too saw that she was watching a movie and asked her what she was watching.. ha.. and you could have knocked her over with a feather when the kidling said it was The Three Musketeers. HA. (I think she was expecting to hear her say some typical "pre-teen" movie or something. ha. She got quite a kick out of hearing the kidling tell her how Gene Kelly was sword fighting with Van Heflin. (ha... because this lady was old enough to know who Gene Kelly and Van Heflin actually WERE) The Window is on TCM in October YAY!! There's one big problem. It's on at 4:45 AM AGGGHHH!!!! (ha) Maybe I can see if my dad will record it for me. (if he will remember) That is about the only way I can record things for myself these days (alas) We'll see what happens. Maybe I can figure something out. Are you hitting that magical number in a couple of weeks No.. not "hitting" it. ha. I always joke that "When you hit forty, forty hits you back" So I have decided I am going to be NICE as pie to fifty.. ha. NO hitting. Where's Molo when you need him?! I've been watching some of his favorites I don't know where he has been hanging out... but if he is not careful, we may have to get that rope I have been saving out of the freezer for him. What Chaplins have you seen and how do you like them I have only seen a handful. In no particular order: City Lights, The Kid, The Gold Rush, The Circus, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, and I THINK I have seen all of (or I know at least some of) Monsieur Verdoux. I may have seen a couple more, but to be honest, I don't remember. Maybe Modern Times and The Gold Rush would be two most faves.. but to be honest, I really liked them all. I think you would enjoy them pretty well.. And I hope you see The Great Dictator for sure.. that is one I think you would enjoy, even it if it not your typical "tramp" Chaplin role. But then neither is the last one I mentioned. (Monsieur Verdoux) That one might be one you should check out though.. it is a bit of a dark comedy, as I recall.. maybe even somewhat in the vein of Kind Hearts and Coronets.. sort of (only not exactly the same.. because he marries his victims, if I recall) It was not one that I could rave about.. ha. But I LOVED the others.. I will be interested to hear what you have to say about them all. Here I am, a chivalrous guy who is looking out for your best interests. You should take those vitamins and then we can go check out the view of the town, together View Shmew. ha. Who wants to go check out a bunch of stuffy old buildings. I am going back over to the rock quarry.. now THERE's a VIEW. (I love the smell of diesel dump trucks in the morning) OH and PS: I am editing my post because I wanted to chime in and say I hope you do watch the Claudette Colbert version of Imtitation of Life. I think it is better than the Lana one (but others may not agree) I really do like it though. Will be interested in how you compare them. Edited by: rohanaka on Sep 11, 2013 10:56 PM
  23. We're supposed to walk there together Ha.. that'll be the day when I walk together with anywhere with the likes of YOU. (More like behind you maybe.. with my best sharpened HAT PIN.) You have to be careful Yeah.. ain't it the truth. ha. You know, a woman in my condition can't afford to take any chances.. HA! (so maybe instead, of walking.. hmmm.. I think l'd better just drive... the TRUCK that is!)
  24. I suggest we go to the top of a building and have a nice look over the town. It's beautiful up there Sounds great!! I'll just meet you there. I will even be sure to send a TRUCK to drop you off. (insert sound of snare drum rim shot hear) HA!
