I'm glad you found *A Canterbury Tale *on YouTube
Well, don't be, ha. Because I DIDN'T! (bah) It was just three excerpts (that LOOKED like it was going to be the whole movie.. because the first one starts with the opening credits.. and they were all labled 1,2, and 3. I did get to see just enough of the movie to know.. I really want to find this one and see it all the way through. It looks very interesting (and I can see what you mean already about it being "poetic") I will keep looking kid. This one is on my "wanna see" list now for sure.
-
Did you catch THE H-MAN? I thought it was pretty cool, and looked great in color. Very hip and "culty"
Dadgum, I passed it by. Tough break for me. It DOES sound cool too.. Who'da thunk it??? Better luck to me next time, ha.
-
she's quite adorable
Ha.. good! She' does "adorable" well too.
It's not as unrelentingly intense as *CoaHTR *or as negative
Well, I will have to check it out sometime..ha.. and I guess I will just hold off on my "brick" order.. you know until I need to throw SOMETHING again. (at.. well.. you know.. at something and/or someone GREY)
(oh... on second thought.. maybe I better stock up, afterall)
-
Thanks little darlin'..ha. But the Grey Dude did have it right..ha. I DO like to "run off at the mouth"
I just never realized I had so many opinions on this movie before.. ha. But really.. I think it is more the characters that I am opinionated about.. and what made them tick. Anyway.. I do tend to blab.. I have no illusions. HA. (I am just glad you haven't thrown any bricks at me yet.. no pun intended! HA!) RE: The Long Hot Summer.. now I do confess.. I have heard of it, but may have avoided this movie in the past.. probably because I am such a marginal Newman person. (though I am with you.. he did have some blue, blue eyes.)
Maybe I will check it out sometime... because I DO love Welles.. and I bet he did a good take on the whole "Big Daddy" persona. Oh.. and I love Angela too. (though I bet she plays a "detestable" gal in it.. ha. She is good at "detestable") :-)
But oh.. do they all just sit around and yell at one another like in COHTR??? If so, I may have to stock up on a few bricks of my own before I watch it..ha. I will want SOMETHING to throw, I am sure! ha. (Because, you know me.. ha. I just take my movies way too seriously sometimes.)

-
*I Know Where I'm Going*
Duh.. I missed it. Ha. (I forgot to warn the secretaries I was wanting to check it out..ha) ;-) I will check into that one sometime too. ha. (and ps.. I am going to TRY to get to ACT sometime this weekend.. but not sure if I can get to it or not) TOO much going on.. (but at least still a LITTLE more free time lately than usual.. ah summer) ha.
-
Re Dwight... He really did a very good job at being a really awful excuse for a human being. Not sure about him w/ regard to his music. (though I do remember a few of his songs from the 80's) But he COULD have had a career in the movies.. at least if he had stuck w/ the whole ****, "mean" old boy type role.

RE: The BLOB!!!!!!!!! (Yeehaw) I had never seen this movie all the way through until tonight!!! And I have to say I LOVED it, though I must confess I loved it more for it's comical side (though I am sure at least some of that was not the intended affect when it was made) ha.
My favorite bit.. when that old guy wakes up and can't decide on a helmet. ha. Maybe he needed to call those "What Not to Wear" folks to get a firm opinion on required fashion for an air raid/fire/civil defense emergency.

Oh.. and the ending.. ha. Now that was the most fun of all because.. well.. I am NO "environmentalist" by any stretch of the imagination.. (so PLEASE no one get all in an uproar.. because I am joking here) ha. But OH NO!! "The world will be safe.. so long as the arctic stays COLD" ????????? EEEK! Talk about your missed movie sequel opportunites.. ha. I can see it now... *Return of The BLOB*!! (with an opening narration by Al Gore)

Miss G says: I will say I can sympathize with Brick in his depression and the way it can paralyze you.
And Jackie says:
And truly, I think Maggie knows that Brick would be better off with something TO DO.
Does she know depression? I think she does, but she is one who will fight it off tooth and nail...and I think Liz really gets this aspect of Maggie... she may seem like she's got a lot of confidence, but I do think she knows something of what it is to sink.
And I think both you gals have hit on a major theme in this story that I never really considered. Depression can sometimes BE a second cousin to "self-pity" and I think Brick had BOTH of these going on to be sure. It is a VERY depressing thing to be totally disillusioned. He had lost his best friend, his profession.. and even his own identity. It doesn't get anymore depressing that than.
And PS: Jackie, I think you are right.. Maggie knew the darker side of life and what it could mean to give up.. she was a survivor.. but she COULD have chosen a different path. And I think this goes back to what I was saying earlier about how you can really see the differences in their characters by the way they responded to what was going on in their lives.. She saw it as a reason to fight back.. he saw it as a reason to shut down and drive a wedge between himself and everyone and everything he thought had let him down. Very telling.
Miss G says I understand him...and his "clicks", even if I believe he needs to slough off that inertia, that depression, ASAP or it will kill him.
I am glad he was able to get down to the REAL man behind the misery. It really did look knip and tuck for him for quite sometime. Downward spirals can do you in, but I bet now he came out of that situation a FAR better (or at least stronger) person than he was when he went into it. (at least that is the spin I took on things by the end of the movie. )
And ps: Miss G.. I could never see you "Bricking" out the way he did, youngun. Tough stuff can get the best of us down.. but I never could see you getting bitter and mean and just giving up. You have way too much "Katie Scarlett" in you darlin'. You are feistier and stronger than you think, dear girl. :-)
Ok folks.. as a side note, now.. ha.. is it just me.. or have I been imposing FAR too much "blabbage" on you for a movie that I claim to have (at best) a love/hate relationship with?? Now I need to re-examine my thoughts on that.. ha. I never dreamed I would have so much to say about it all.. ha. In the meantime I should sit down and shut up a while.. if only to give you rest from all my blah blah blah.

But thank you for letting me blab. (Have I told you lately how much I have missed hanging out in here w/ you folks?) :-)

No, not a title I am familiar with, but there are a lot of those.
-
they're not all viewable for free
Bummer. I went in and took another look around. Almost ALL of them have that little green "H" alas. The Long Voyage Home is still free though... yippee.. But there went all the Chaplins (at least the first several I saw) and the Laughton ones too. (fortunately I have seen most of all of the ones they listed for both C and L.. so not as disappointed.) The River is a wash out now too.. ha. (at least through Hulu)
And I did a search but could not even FIND the Cantebury one you mentioned.. (I am sure it was there and it just my technophobic tendency coming out in me, ha) Based on the short synopsis I read on it in widipedia it sounds kinda different.. but intriguing. So I am happy to report that I did NOT give up the search.. ha and for once, I got lucky.... It looks like YOUTUBE has it.. so will try to check it out soon.
-
I remember seeing The River (in the lineup there) I will have to go back and look for A Cantebury Tale sometime soon and check both of them out. Thanks!
-
*Criterion *has made several of its titles available for (free) viewing at Hulu.com
Thanks, little darlin'! My golly, there is a LOT to sort through. I will need to go back and search a little closer to see what all they have, but just on first glance, what ones do YOU recommend (ha.. that will make it easier)
I was excited to see all those CHAPLINS! (I don't have but one or two on tape) And then also.. I saw several good Charles Laughtons too (Hobson's Choice.. yee haw)
OH..and I ALSO saw.. The Long Voyage Home. (I DID finally get to see that one this past winter, but won't mind getting to see it again, now) And hey.. isn't the Duke wearing a TURTLE NECK in that picture they are using on the cover??

Oh dear Miss Maven..ha. No way. I am a LOUSY list maker. I do have a lot of favorites.. but when I go to put them in any sort of categories... ugh. It is a mess. Movies, songs.. books even. I am way too jumbled in my thought processes to list them.. ha. (now candy... ha.. that was the list for me!)

I believe Maggie would have married Brick had he been a poor man's son, but so long as he was a rich man's son, she saw a chance for them to have what he was entitled to and she was only human to want that, given she grew up with nothing
I think you are exactly right. I don't believe his (or his family's) money is what made her love him.. but it IS a part of who he is.. and who she is now, as his wife. SOMEBODY's gotta keep a roof over their heads, for crying out loud, ha.
She can't fathom how anyone can possibly CHOOSE to be dirt poor. Only the idiotically spoiled can think that way, they don't know how ghastly it is. And she saw Brick wasn't going to go out and make any kind of life on his own for them, without Big Daddy
And see, I am not sure he even really thought about the "dirt poor" result. And I think you have him EXACTLY right. he was NO "noble" character. He was sefish.. to the point that he was almost totally consumed by himself. Deep down inside him.. there WAS still a 'real" person in there.. but OH my golly.. he was well hidden until things FINALLY started to break down for him. But it practically took dynamite to get there.. Before that, I think he was just so disgusted, and bitter, and had turned more or less "drunk-mean". He didn't CARE what happened to anyone, including himself (but again, I think it was more... he didn't WANT to care). He just wanted to be left alone in his misery. He wanted his own private pity party, booze and all. Because really, he was just thoroughly disillusioned with everything he THOUGHT his life was about.
I bet he'd have been dead in a year if he'd have kept on the way he was going. (and in his mind.. that was probably OK too.. that way no one would bother or make him THINK anymore about the real world and all the things he was trying to shut out of his heart and mind.) I say again, a sad.. pathetic.. and totally self-absorbed "Brick" wall. And Maggie (and really Big Daddy too) truly had to blast through all that to get him to think again.. they were his dynamite. ha. (sort of a "one-two" punch kinda thing)
I don't know if I can write this clearly
Ha, says you, little lady! It is CRYSTAL clear.. beautiful. (I especially liked the part where you reminded the Grey Guy how UN-grey he is being!!)

Hats off to your lists, Miss Maven and Ms Favell (and I know I have said it before to Rey, Miss G, Mr. Grimes, etc, etc, too) All you folks blow me away, ha. Very impressive!
-
I've always loved Maggie...and Liz is just great. I played the role in college and it was deep... very difficult to get to the heart of. I thought only actors loved Tennessee Williams. There's so much to peel away, layers upon layers upon layers, maybe not as much fun to watch as to perform.
And I think your playing her as a character has given you a pretty good insight into her, kid. Because I agree with a lot of what you say about her, for sure.
I think Maggie deeply loves Brick, but they have to live in the real world, and she wants what is best for HIM.
The only thing I might disagree with you on, is that I think she wants what is best for THEM. Because she does love Brick, but I have always felt that more than anything, she most wants Brick to love HER in return. It isn't "all about Maggie" but I think it is all about "Maggie and Brick".
Maggie can get down there in the mud for him.... she'll skirmish and tackle. Brick can't and won't.
She is fierce where he just gives up because he doesn't care (or better.. doesn't WANT to care) The things that made her feel "less than loved" have made her a stronger fighter.. where the things that made HIM feel that way.. just turned him bitter. It says a lot about their personalities and inner strengths.
She wants Brick to live with her, not in some dream world that bars her out. But in the long run, she knows he needs Big Daddy, but won't fight for his time and birthright. She clears the way for it all to happen.
Exactly right.
The Grey Dude Says:
*And "Sister Woman" (Madeleine Sherwood) was killing me with her "Brick" barbs at the end of the film. I love lines such as "the Punch Bowl" and her saying, "Maybe he'll cheer Big Daddy up by kicking a couple of field goals." Hilarious!*
And Jackie Responds:
*I can't bear sister woman! I know she gives a great performance, but I still have too much Maggie in me to like her.*
I am with both of you on this ..ha. She is a beautiful stereotype, though, isn't she? She is the mental image I get of pretty much everything that was wrong about the "southern Bible Belt mindset" way back when.. very "Religious" for show.. but in NO way having anything in the way of a genuine, spirit of love, kindness, or faith. ONLY out to look "clean and polished" so they can look down on everyone who isn't.. and she plays is beautifully. She WAS unbearable. OH my goodness.. hideously awful.. and thouroughly detestable. But what I liked MOST about her was how obviously hypocritical she was... she got to a point where she didn't even TRY to hide it any more. UGH.. she was definitly the one character that I can honestly say that I loved to hate the most in the entire thing. (And throw her husband into the mix too.. because he JUST let her BE that way... he was money grubbing and selfish.. but SHE was the mean one in the family for sure.
I thought it was about the girl, but you're right, it's about Brick.
And see.. again.. I am agreeing with you both( at least a little) ha. Because I think it is MOST about Brick and how he eventually resolves his relationships with both his father.. and his wife. On one hand.. it is all about Maggie.. trying to get him to communicate with her.. trying to break down that "Brick" wall he has built to shut her out.. but it is DEFINITLEY about Brick and Big Daddy getting down to the fine details of their relationship too... and both parts play out pretty much simultaneously. I have to confess.. it is pretty amazing.. (for a train wreck.. ha)

I'm pretty much a Paul Newman fan. I think I have liked him in most everything I've seen him in. I like his seriousness. "Brick" is now my favorite character of his. But I also love his "Fast Eddie" and "John Russell" ( *Hombre *). Such powerful characters
I can't say he is a "bad" actor.. I just think it is something like what Jackie was saying earlier.. a "bandwagon" let down.. ha. So many folks just think he is THE guy... (and he is very talented) but for some reason.. he doesn't stand out as much for me. (though he did do well in this movie) I think my FAVORITE role for him is.. ha.. Doc Hudson in Cars!
What?! You like to run at the mouth
Ha.. well I DO confess that is true (there is WAY too much evidence against me to deny it.. ha) But I think that the issue I have w/ stories like this one is the WAY folks are running off at the mouth. It is ONE thing to say your piece.. speak your mind.. express your opinion, and even respectfully defend your position. It is one thing to even just blab and blab (to hear yourself blab..oh GEE when have I ever done that?? ) HA..
But it is an ENTIRELY different thing to shout, yell, demean, and generally just completely verbally shred someone into tiny bits.. to chew them up and spit them out, again and again, for SPORT, even.. to sit around and bemoan their very existence in your life.. blame them for ALL your faults, failings and problems.. and to treat them as if they were THE worst excuse for human beings on the planet.. EVER. And then meanwhile you just sit around and whine and cry because nobody loves you.
OH brother! I just wanted to shout at them.. "Good GRAVY, people, get a CLUE!" ha. OH me, I went back and forth between hating and feeling sorry for just about EVERYONE at some point (hating them because of the way they were treating everyone else.. and then feeling sorry for them because of the way THEY were being treated too) UGH.. that is NO way to treat your worst ENEMY, let alone your family (blech)
But I do confess.. YOU hit the nail on the head tabout what makes all that shouting and badmouthing and hatred WORTH sitting through.. that scene in the basement w/ Brick and Big Daddy.
Now THAT is the best part of the whole entire movie for me.. and makes BOTH those thoroughly completely and utterly UN-likeable characters TOTALLY human for me. Up till then.. my fave moments in the story were from Maggie.. but that bit in the basement steals the show.
PS, HEY Madhat!! What's the deal??? You get an entire "little world"??? All I get is "my own little corner" of one.. ha.

I've been to Rome a few times and I was so disappointed when I first visited and there was no dancing on the Tiber. One of the most romantic things I have ever seen in a movie is the dance on the Tiber
OH, drat. little darlin. I am sorry they did not have that when you were there. Dancing on the Tiber... that does sound wonderful. doesn't it? (and I don't even DANCE) ha.. (unless you count that little "happy dance" moment when I wake up and realize... yay.. it is a day off of work, the house is clean.. and I have NO chores to keep me tied up today... oh wait.. Let me go back to what I was saying.. ha.. I don't dance.) HA
I think couples used to have more fun
At the very least they used to LOOK like that had more fun... in the movies anyway. ha.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof has for me wonderful performances by Elizabeth and Burl and the whole cast.
Truly, it does. Everyone really shines in the roles they are playing. I can't think of anyone who doesn't stand out.. right down to the last "bratty" brat.. ha. (OH those awful kids)
"no neck monsters
HA!! (did I mention OH, those awful kids???)

It's a "LeRoy" moment, a la The Bad Seed and his "stick bloodhounds". Ro, I know you know what I mean
HEE HEE!!!!!!!!! Why yes, I do, little darlin'!! OH, poor, poor LeRoy. At least he (and Mrs. Dagle) got all the good lines, ha. (Hey.. do you smell excelsior burning??)

-
Well, it's official..ha. I HAVE to see this movie again..ha. (I don't even REMEMBER a barber, ha) I can't recall it making too huge an overall impression on me, though. (but I do recall liking it for the most part... that ending does stand out in my mind. (and Eddie Albert too) and I do remember some of the scenes you mention.. but really, I just more or less have "impressions" of this movie in my memory rather than actually memories of it. I will have to check it out again and take a closer look.
(OH, and PS.. I totally get that whole "bandwagon let down" thing..ha. I have seen many movies over the years that I could only sit and wonder, "So THIS is what everyone was raving about.." ha. It is hard when a popular movie gets TOO much build up... unless you know for SURE the story is going to be good.. or your favorite actor is really going to shine in it.. you can sometimes get disappointed.
-
I can't think of another movie in which the man is left full of love, so completely changed, waiting like that. Except for *The Third Man *. And I can see Peck is choked up. I think he really was. Heartbreaking.
You know, girlie... I have not seen that movie in a long time... and I have to say the Peck never really stood out for me before (in this film) all that much. But OH.. the way you just described him there.... Now I need to watch it again because i can TOTALLY see the comparison (w/ TTM) Good catch, little darlin'.
-
What's the love and what's the hate with *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof *
OH.. I KNEW you were going to ask me that.. sigh.. ha.
Let's see... first of all.. I am NO Paul Newman fan (to speak of) and I am not much on Liz either (I know.. WHO do I think I am calling myself a classic movie fan?? ha) I won't deny their talent.. it is just my personal take on most of the films I have seen with them in it. I liked HER a lot more as a child than I did when she got older (for the most part) but I think if I HAD to pick a favorite role for her (as an adult) this one would be it.. if I HAD to pick, ha.. (but GEE, she needed to put something OVER that slip, for crying out loud. ha. I mean, come on.. if you are going to stand around and rant and rave.. put some clothes on first.. ha.. and yes.. I know. I am REALLY likely in the minority on that one too, ha) :-)
Which brings me to the OTHER big reason I struggle (to not hate) this movie sometimes.. all that "ranting and raving" at one another. OH my golly.. the way they dissect each other and rip each other to shreds.. without ever raising a hand. And then there is all that time they spend spouting and spouting abuot how MISERABLE their lives are.. ha OH for pity's sake. It drives me up the wall, ha. The Peacemaker in me just wanted to tell them to snap out of it and get OVER themselves, ha.
(I doubt I would last 30 seconds as a character in a Tennessee Williams play.. ha. I would get too disgusted w/ all that idle, self-absorbed "spouting" and start pulling out my ROPE and stringing a few of them up by their heels, ha)
As for the "love".. ha.. well.. I do confess..despite all the "stuff" I just told you I hate..ha.. I LOVE the in depth look into these characters mindsets and even almost their very souls. It is VERY intriguing to watch the way they all sort of "unfold" before your eyes (by the end of the movie.. you almost know their DNA you have gotten such a close look at who they all REALLY are inside) but oh.. the trip getting there.. did I mention it was like watching a train wreck??? ha.
-
And "Baby" drove me nuts, too!
HA! Well.. I have NO answer for you on that.. ha. And here I was so sure you two would be PERFECT for each other!! You know... A woman who only thinks what you IMAGINE she is thinking..(ha)

Well... at least you gave it a try. (and ps.. I can't say it is my "fave" Duke role either.. but I did not see him as "doofy" the way you did.. oh well.RE: COAHTR
you were right!
And I bet you liked it for all the reasons I STRUGGLE with when I have seen it in the past. I have a sort of "love/hate" thing with this movie... ha. It is like watching a train wreck.. I WANT to turn it off.. and yet.. I just keep watching. ha.

*(10)*
So is that on a scale of one to ten.. with ten being the BEST???????????
(ha.. Ok.. I know.. WHO do I think I am kiddng?? .. ha) So does "10" mean a "meh" or a flat out "Blech".
-
TOO funny, Bronxie.. may I just say:
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha and HA!
(oh that Dwight Yoakam.. ha. He got JUST what he deserved, didn't he?? ha)
PS: Jackie... "Cute"... "Weird" ha.. it's all depends on what dictionary you use.. ha. But at least we have FUN!!

LISTS
in Your Favorites
Posted
Well its easy for me to spout off a bunch of titles of movies that I like in no apparent order and with little rhyme or reason. ha. But I just admire how well so many folks on here are able to get their lists organized and narrowed down.. and figured out, even.
Even yours.. though you said was not in any order except alphabetical. still was quite impressive..and well thought out.
I say again.. hats off to you.
I'm thinking great minds think alike.
Ha.. I am just riding along on everyone's coat tails (and loving it, ha) Call me a copycat. ha. But in the last few years, I have discovered more "new" movies to like/love/and enjoy than I even knew existed, all by just hanging out here (and gabbing w/ so many of the better read.. or should I say "viewed"? ha) folks "in the know" . This place (and you kind folks) are great for that.
