  1. 116 Wayne movies WOWSA Mr. Movieman.. you DO have me beat. ha. I am impressed. (I am also impressed by your "list making" ha.. you guys and all your organized lists.. I am more of a Post it note messy list maker.. ha) I got to looking at the Grey Dude's list.. and then I saw what you posted about how many you had seen.. and well.. I got curious. ha. I sat down in the IMDB website and looked up Wayne's filmography because I honestly have NO idea how many films of his I have seen.. ha. I KNEW I was nowhere near YOUR count.. but I was not sure how many I could list. Here is what I came up with... not in order of any preference.. but closer to being in order of when they came out I think.. (because I just used the IMDB site as my "guide) And PS: these do not include the "Lone Star" movies.. (more on them in a moment) The Big Trail Stagecoach Three Faces West The Shepherd of the Hills (I have only seen about HALF of this movie all the way through) Flying Tigers (a LONG long time ago) The Fighting Seabees (also a long time ago) They Were Expendable Without Reservations Angel and the Badman Fort Apache Red River 3 Godfathers Wake of the Red Witch The Fighting Kentuckian She Wore a Yellow Ribbon Sands of Iwo Jima Rio Grande Flying Leathernecks The Quiet Man Trouble Along the Way Hondo Blood Alley The Searchers Wings of Eagles Rio Bravo The Horse Soldiers North to Alaska The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Hatari How the West Was Won Donovan?s Reef McLintock The Sons of Katie Elder El Dorado (very long time ago) The Green Berets Hellfighters True Grit The Undefeated Chisum (not all the way through.. only about the first half of it) Rio Lobo (a long time ago on that one too) Big Jake The Cowboys Rooster Cogburn 43??? If I counted right?? ha.. but I might be off a bit.. it is late and I am an old woman. And PS: Chris, re: the LoneStar movies.. I have also seen about 6 or 7 of those, I think. Maybe even 8 or 10. I am not sure. I have several (around 20 I think?) that came in a very inexpensive DVD pack that I bought at Walmart a couple of years ago and I just never have sat down and watched them all. None of them really stand out all that much to me (that I recall) but they were fun to watch. I like to think of them as the stepping stones that led to the ?Man who would be Duke? ha. :-) PS: Grey Dude and Miss G.. more on WOTRW soon. Edited by: rohanaka on Sep 5, 2010 2:12 AM
  2. OH Great.. now I see I have to make ANOTHER trip to the library to check if they have Canyon Passage now too!! (oh me oh MY those are some ABSOLUTELY gorgeous screencaps!!) :-) I have never even HEARD of this movie.. but wow.. it LOOKS lovely.. and your posts have me curious.. ha. What WAS it about anyway?? :-) As you can see, he's being chased by Quiet Gal Hahahahahahahahahahahaahahhahahahahahahaha and HA! Very funny. And PS: I would NEVER throw a rope on sweet little Wardy... I reserve my hangings for only the most vile offenders... such as: _______
  3. Hiya Grey Dude.. (and Miss G too) So.. I made it to the library (without breaking my neck!! ha) and picked up my copy of WOTRW... now I just have to find some time tonight or tomorrow (hopefully) to sit down and watch. You're one of the biggest Wayne fans on the board Ha.. Oh great... now I have sunk even LOWER (than I likely already am) in the estimation of some on this board (if a certain thread in another forum that will remanin unmentioned is to be believed) But hey.. I can live with that.. and besides... . I will be getting the Wayne box set with Blood Alley. I'm just waiting for a sale Lately, I am thinking I am being far outmatched by YOU, Mr. Grey, in terms of my love for all things "Duke". ha. I think you MAY have seen almost as many of his films now as I have. You have really impressed me by the way you have been willing to keep an open mind about him.. and I am glad you have found some of his movies among your favorites now. (PS: let me know when you get to Blood Alley.. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it... and say hello to your new girlfriend "Baby" for me too!! ) OH.. and PS: I now (finally) have The Tall T on order.. I kept forgetting to check for that one everytime I went in to the library, but your post reminded me. And also.. after I read some of the other comments between you and Miss G.. guess what else I ordered.. ha.. JUST because I now want to DOUBLE dog dare you to watch it.... Wuthering Heights!!!!!!! Oh..Grey Dude.. that one will be RIPE for a good old fashioned knock down drag out w/ you for sure... ha. (but who knows.. I can't wait to hear your take on those two "love birds" ha. But I MAY surprise you.. because WH is a story always baffles me.. ha. I truly do love it... a LOT.. but for reasons that are a complete mystery to me because I ABSOLUTELY hate both the male and the female leads.. (OH MY GOLLY.. talk about a couple of self absorbed jerks.. ha.. oh ladies.. I know... what kind of "romance" fan do I think I am I anyway.. ha. Please forgive me..) But I will save that for another ramble.. OH.. and PS: don't think I MISSED your sideswiping wise crack about me being "mean" to kids... I am never mean... just lovingly "firm" You know.. much like how I have to be in order to keep the likes of YOU in line.. (A Peacemaker's job is never done... ) PS: Miss Scotchie.. HOWDY there you soon to be Birthday Girl!!
  4. I do believe it's the most complete of all the characters I have seen of John Wayne's. He gives you everything in this one. Oh great.. now I have to break my neck to try and make it to the library before they close today... I got my notice in the mail saying my order for a copy of WOTRW was finally in... and here I wasn't planning on stopping by there til early next week.. but now I see all the spoilage going on and think I have to see what all the fuss is about.. (and PS I will wait til later to read the rest of the "spoilage"by the way all I did was sort of skim through what you wrote) And I sort of skimmed over some of MissG's posts too and golly.. I sure do NOT remember that music in the movie.. but it has been a long long time since I saw it... so now I HAVE to go to the library today because it will be TUESDAY before I get another chance if I don't.. and gee.. this is an emergency. HA. I mean come on. a Duke movie AND Chopin. Two of my all time favorites together in one film... who could ask for anything more???? :-) (Ok.. I could. Because I also wouldn't mind a nice BLT w/ a side of potato salad and a large class of iced tea... but THAT and the movie.. that's it... and then I'd be doing alright)
  5. Oh Mr. "In Hollywood".. you were NOT kidding when you said last week that you were building up to a "big finish". I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every poster but some (especially the last few) are real stand outs. (I love the look on Chaplin's face, ha.. and those last two posters.. OH me.. utterly breathtaking) and here is a link to view them in a slideshow format May I just say: Wowsa. That was TERRIFIC!! What a great way to view them all together like that. It makes you just appreaciate them (as artwork) all the more. Bravo, sir!! :-)
  6. Hiya Miss G... I keep thinking about the backstory on BLOOD ALLEY when I watch it. Originally, Robert Mitchum was playing Wayne's role, and I wonder how it would have been with him and Lauren? Well.. to be honest.. (as much as I love the Duke) I bet Mitchum would have done a good job w/ it. I can definitely see him in that role.. but I think he'd have come off entirely different than the Duke.. a lot more "laid back" maybe. And I imagine that might have made his scenes w/ Lauren work really well (because I did not see as much chemistry between Wayne and Bacall as I thought there could have been) She was just not "firey" enough to believably stand up to his "bigger than life" and bossy nature. ha. She's cooler.. (at least in this movie) and I think THAT would have made a better match w/ Mitchum.. but who am I to say... (I really know next to NOTHING about either her or RM in terms of their real personalities) And then I am constantly on the look out for Anita Ekberg who is credited but I can never recognize or spot her in the movie! Have you? I had to look her up (because I knew her name but could not place her) I THINK she might have been the character who (I THINK) was Big Han's wife (??) maybe.. There was a woman (that COULD have been her in makeup) w/ a baby on her back .. and a BIG gun in her hand.. in a lot of the scenes on the boat... and she stayed out on the deck (with both the baby and the gun) to help fight off any of the other boats, soldiers, etc. That MAY have been her, but I can't say for certain. I also like to compare and contrast Duke and Lauren here in this movie with their later film, The Shootist That is still one movie I have YET to see all the way through.. not sure why (and I really don't think it is because it was his last.. or that he dies) And I have tried to watch it too. but just seem to always give up on it for some reason.. I don't know what it is.. but SOMEDAY I will sit down and watch it.. (someday...)
  7. That was a very fine read Ms Favell (and a nice spotlight on Qualen) I have not seen Out of the Fog OR The Long Voyage Home for that matter. (TLVH has been on my wanna see list for a good while now.. sigh) Out of the Fog is playing twice in the next few months so maybe I can catch it!! PS.. just looking at some of the pics you have posted here.. I NEVER realized that was Qualen as Miser Stevens (or Berger either.. though admittedly I am not as "up" on Casablanca as TDADW) Thanks for putting his name w/ those roles for me.
  8. this important announcement May I just add... woo hoo!! (and thanks for the head's up sir!!!) PS... way cool pics too, ladies. :-)
  9. OH Miss G.. THANKS so much for posting the tribute to my beloved HOSS!!! I am w/ you.. I had a huge crush on "Adam" years ago... but HOSS would have been the better one to settle down w/. ha. Adam was too "broody" and Little Joe was just TOO downright SPOILED. (but in truth.. ha.. it was WAY too dangerous for ANY woman to get too attatched to the Cartwright men, ha) :-) Thanks again for the lovely post on one of my all time fave TV characters. (and ps Ms Favell.. lovely pics of Mr. Qualen, ma'am. I do enjoy his performances in anything I have ever seen him in.. I don't know if I can pick a fave.. but he DID do a stand out job in TGOW for sure)
  10. Glad to hear you folks are enjoying your goodies. And PS: Mr. Movieman.. yes .. 'youngun' ha. You might be just ahead of me in terms of age, but years have NOTHING to do w/ it.ha. Because if the saying is true that you're only as old as you feel.. well.. that make me about a GAZILLION years old, ha. (what is it Indiana Jones said?? "It's not the years, it's the mileage" Ha. I think my factory warranty is expired!!) ha. Well... I am just popping in here to say THANKS again to my secretaries for keeping me on task and helping me to remember my movie.. I really enjoyed it a lot. (And to be honest.. I don't know WHICH I enjoyed more.. watching the film.. or just goofing around on here w/ you folks TALKING about how excited I was that it was coming on, ha) Which brings me to my next point.. I actually was a bit (sheepishly) worried that I MIGHT have been remembering this film too fondly.. ha. It HAD been a long time since I saw it last and I thought.. oh great.. what if I go through all this build up and I watch it this time and I end up feeling just "ho hum" ha.. But NO!! I did enjoy it a lot. And I FREELY admit it is more or less just a "fun" film.. there are not really going to be a whole lot of 'deep" thoughts that one has to think in order to appreciate this movie.. ha. But that is OK. While I DO like to ponder my characters sometimes and get inside their heads and try and find out what it is that makes them tick.. sometimes I just like to sit back and enjoy a fun story.. and this is what Blood Alley was for me. The TCM movie schedule had this film listed as an "adventure" movie.. and that is likely a good way to describe it. It is not ALL one kind of movie or another though.. it is a nice mix. It has some humor.. some romance.. some action.. some supsense.... and some drama. All mixed together. No great "themes" to ponder.. but overall it was just a fun and entertaining way to pass the time. And the Duke was in rare form with this story. Playful and gruff, rough and rugged, yet (at times) very compassionate too. I loved watching him talk to "Baby" and the way he used her to both hang on to his sanity and also talk out all his problems and ideas. And I liked his gradual "warm up" to the people of the village and their plans to the point where he began to work to care for and save not just himself but them as well. I can't say this was a stand out role for him.. or for Ms Bacall for that matter. (likely less for her than him, to be honest) but as I mentioned before, it was a nice way to pass the time and I am truly happy to have gotten a chance to FINALLY see this film again after so many years. (and PS.. wow.. that Paul Fix was almost UNrecognizable as Mr. Tso.. I TOTALLY did not remember him even being in this movie at all.. but I thought he did a really good job. and that was some pretty good make up on him too) Thanks again, to my secretarial staff.. and to everyone else too for putting up w/ me.. I will settle down now and stop being so DOOFY over this movie.. ha.. at least for a LITTLE while, anyway.. Now to start my "whining' campaign to the TCM programmer gurus for Wake of the Red Witch.. ha. (gee... I wonder if I can bribe them w/ some of the left over candy and goodies from my secretary payroll. HA!!)
  11. Harry Carey" is probably the hands-down, best "portrait" in the series. It is one of my favorites. It is truly striking. Thanks again for all the work that you have put into posting ALL of these.. but especially for these really special ones like Carey (ok.. they are all really special.. ha) I also like the William S. Hart (both Breed of Men w/ his "steely gaze" and also the Tumbleweeds one.. woo hoo.. at least ONE that I have both heard of AND seen... so I don't feel like SUCH a slouch, now) ha. This has really turned out to be a truly entertaining and really impressive series of posters, sir. NO surprise there.. this IS the "Kyle in Hollywood" thread, afterall. :-) And PS: this is NOT something I say TOO often (especially at my advanced age) but YOU rock.
  12. HA.. technophobia is such a debilitating disease.. I had to come back in and edit my last post because I spelled it wrong!! (ha) And what do I find when I get here????????? Roha earns "most poisonous" for the moment! Ollie... don't give the Grey Dude ANY ideas.. ha. He already slams my cooking for that all the time as it is!! Ha. (but from you I will take it as a complement.. I THINK!) PS: Mr Movieman.. enjoy the goodies!! (You'll notice I baked a few extra treats and put them in a travel container for you to share w/ the fam (especially when you are all together at __________ ;-) (or you don't have to share.. you can keep them all to yourself if you want!! Maybe that will make it more fun for you!! ha.) Either way.. enjoy them, youngun!! And I hope we can all get together and blab over the Duke and Ms Bacall soon!! I will look forward to it!
  13. WOO HOO!! My tape is rolling and I am about to head out for an appt. here in a little bit... so I am HOPING that my recording of BLOOD ALLEY will be all ready and waiting for me when I get back YEEHAW!! I just wanted to stop by and drop off the paychecks for all my faithful secretaries!! Thanks so much folks for keeping me on task so I would not be my USUAL dopey self and forget to tape my movie!! What WOULD I do w/ out you!! Turtles.. for Ms Favell :-) Some M&M's for the Movieman :-) And for Miss G.... a box of lovely assorted chocolates :-) Oh.. and HERE'S that bonus I told you was coming... CUPCAKES for everybody!! And PS: Miss Maven... here is a little something for you (for mentioning the movie for me again last night... I remember from your "Love" thread that you enjoyed chocolate covered cherries... so here's some just for you little gal) And gee.. I am so happy (if it really works we will find out in a minute) about the new EASY and USER FRIENDLY picture posting THING (technophobia is such a debilitating disease.. I can use all the help I can get!! ha) I even have a little something for the Grey Dude just to say thanks. (I am fresh out of sawdust... I DID just bake you a b-day cake, you know) But here is a little left over saur kraut just for YOU!! Now.. to see if I can sneak in just a FEW minutes of Blood Alley before I have to leave... (did I mention WOO HOO!!) Thanks again, everybody (if only just for putting up w/ my DOOFINESS over this film! ha) (you know.. as opposed to all the OTHER doofiness you have to put up w/ me all the rest of the time!! ha) Edited by: rohanaka on Aug 25, 2010 10:36 AM
  14. tomorrow morning at 10:00 am WOOHOO !!!!! Boy oh boy.. you secretaries have been OUTDOING yourselves this time for SURE!!!! (Miss G's post yesterday and a pm from the Movieman.. and now THIS!!!!!!!!! ) Oh my GOSH my GOLLY!!!!! It is actually on at 9AM here in this time zone.. but I have already got an alarm set (not to wake up but to remind me to start the tape.. ha. The vcr is old.. and the remote does not seem to work too well.. so I can't program it (likely a "technophobic thing" more than anything else, ha. Anyway.. I have myself all set to record.. because.. dadgummit.. I have an APPOINTMENT in the morning about forty five minutes after it comes on so I won't be able to stay and watch it in "real time"... But GEE I am going to be watching that thing the MINUTE I get home!! (did I mention WOOHOO!!) I will post your paychecks for you tomorrow my dear secretaries... you have been faithful friends for SURE and have earned your pay this time around (plus bonuses TOO!!) PS: Ms Favell... PS: Miss Maven.. thanks for the trip down memory lane.. ha.. The posts in that thread PROVE my tendency toward "blabbage" better than most!! ha. Edited by: rohanaka on Aug 24, 2010 11:33 PM
  16. Happy Birthday Frank Grimes!!!! ( A sawdust and saur kraut cake has been baked in your honor)
  17. We have missed you SO much round these parts Thanks, young'un. And right back at ya, little lady.. I have missed hanging out w/ you folks here lately.. I feel like I have been burning the candle at both ends lately.. Me and Gene and Veronica. HA! That's a good one Just callin' em like I see 'em, kiddo. (hey.. at least YOU can be in the same category w/ those gals.. ha. I am more in the "Jane Darwell" league!
  18. Thanks for the congrats on my 4K, Grey Guy... So your'e "stunned" ha. (and I didn't even have go buy a special gun for that!!) Ha!!! I WOULD give you grief for making that wisecrack about me having a big mouth.... but sadly there is WAY too much evidence against me!!!
  19. OH Good golly Ms Favell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have a way with the pictures, young'un!!! Thank you SO much.. WOOF!!! ha. (the young Duke.. what can I say.. I think I mentioned that although my heart belongs to the QT, I DO have my school girl crushes now and then.. ha.) Although I gotta say.. I think my favorite is the one w/ him going down that log ride... ha. THAT looks like fun!! (I love the look on his face!!) (PS: THANKS for the Vespa too!! I don't know if I have the gumption to RIDE it.. ha. (I am barely above "bicycle" on my "risk-o-meter" HA! But even if I never DID ride it.. ha.. I can just sit back and enjoy the treasure of knowing that it came from you and the Duke!!) Thanks, little darlin'. (and PS: gents.. I have SEEN pictures of the Lovely Ms Favell.. those pics she has posted only begin to do her justice!!) :-)
  20. Thank you kindly No.. thank YOU kindly, dear Movieman.. for the kind words... and the COOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (y-u-m YUM!!) You can return THAT favor any old time!!
  21. Oh Mad Hat.. Thank you, kind sir.. but you have FAR and away over estimated me as a poster.. ha. However that town is SPOT on.. ha. I DO live in the far reaches of the unsettled and "cowtown-ish" midwest afterall, don't you know.. (I am keeping my fingers crossed.. any day now we MIGHT be lucky enough to get indoor plumbing. ha. Those trips outdoors down the garden path in winter are KILLER!!) ha. :-)
  22. WOOOO HOOO, Miss G.. thank you so very much!! (now THERE's a reminder for me to watch if there ever was one!! ha) I guess I did finally hit that mile marker didn't I?? (listen to me.. ha. FINALLY.. yeah right.. I am suprised it is not double this number by now.. ha) I only WISH I could live up to the high praise the dear Duke has given me there.. In truth.. most of my post have likely been BABBLE.. ha. But I am glad to get to hang out here with all you folks.. you are too kind to put up w/ me for so long!! Chat w/ you later!!!!! Baby!! PS: Molo.. good luck in the identity relocation program.. ha. You may indeed have to go into hiding after THAT!! (go get him Jackie)
  23. It really was a dust storm. I don't think I've watched that many films in that period of time in my life No kiddin!!! I can see that big DUST cloud coming over from the east.. ha. I better bolt my doors and windows.. I have ENOUGH dust in my house already!! ha. For once, I'm innocent! THAT'll be the day... I wrote a capsule about each WHOOwee.. that was way cool.. thanks for putting it all down for me.. I will take your comments (and those from the others who have posted now too) and start checking into the ones I have not seen (or heard of yet) I have seen a few of them (but MOST of them have not) Of the ones I have not seen... based only what you have written here.. the "Shakespearan Noir" sounds the "way coolest" but truthfully.. there is something interesting about all of them from what I can tell so far. RE: TWOTRW.. Hooray!! Now my master plan is coming together.. muhwahaha. Jackie is going to revisit it.. Miss G is going to get a copy of it to watch again.. and Mr. Movieman is recalling the ghosts of rambles past.. OH and I think I saw that MOLO has this one too.. I am sitting on the edge of my seat to find out what HAPPENED to the Duke.. ha. So even though I may not have any luck watching for myself.. (because if you wait for ME you might wait for a DECADE or more, ha) you all are assigned to RAMBLE on it soon and I can just live vicariously through your words until I can find a copy of this film to see for myself!! ha. And in the MEANTIME.. before you get to WOTRW... did I mention?? BLOOD ALLEY IS COMING ON IN A COUPLE MORE DAYS???????????????????????????????????????????? PS: MISS G, We're dealing with a warped mind, ladies True so very true!! I am still looking forward to him meeting up w/ his new girlfriend "Baby".. because she will fit right in w/ his warped mind for sure!!!
  24. You realize that now he has seen more movies than either of us, so that "I'm a newbie, I'm just getting started on classic films" excuse won't play anymore..... Ha.. as if it ever did! (We are wise to his ways.. that is why we have to have so many weapons in our arsenal just to keep him in line!! )
  25. I'm not telling! I do like the ending, though Ah.. a "non-spoiler" for a change!! ha. Ok.. I see how you are.. ha. Well ok.. .SOMEDAY I will (hope to) watch this again.. and refresh my memory... and then I can gab on it with you... but knowing me.. that could be about as long as it took YOU to finally watch it.. HA! Hey! Let's see, since July 15th, I've watched: OH my golly and WOWSA too!! I bow to your movie watching PROWESS, sir!!! Good gravy.. your DVD player must be smoking.. and your DVD collection.. oh my.. it must have been a "dust storm" unrivaled by The Grapes of Wrath with you going through all those long neglected titles like that.. ha. WAY cool for you.. You have some really interesting titles on there.. I must confess I have only seen just a couple... and I have a few of them on my "Wanna See" list too.. but MOST of them I have never really even heard of... So which on your most recently watched list are your faves (and why?) I will have to check out some of these titles I have not heard of before and see what they are all about!! You'll have to watch it! But I will say, I think it's everything you'd ever want from Wayne. I also think he's hilarious. Hilarious???? I do NOT remember THAT... good golly it HAS been a long time since I saw this movie.. (I think it was back in the early 80's... I have slept since then.. so my memory is way too foggy.. ha) (Note to self.. find a way to trick the Grey Dude and others into rambling on WOTRW soon if only so I can read all the comments and find out WHAT happened to the Duke at the end.. ha. (and why was he so funny??) It may be a while yet before I can find a way to watch this one.. and I hate those long suspenseful cliff hangers... HA!)
