Hellllllloooooo Mr. Grey... You're just wanting to fight! Ha.. you caught me. ha. I have MISSED our knock down drag outs.. ha. I see you as embracing routine and constancy. You're "meat and potatoes." OH so you ARE saying I am boring. ha. Actually you are not too far off (dadgum when did you get so good at "pegging me"? But "routine" has a sort of "ugly" ring to it.. ha. Too mundane. But it is true that I like things to be "regular" or maybe reliable is a better word. Constancy is a good word for it. I do enjoy "exciting" sometimes.. I like to travel (but do not GET to very often.. but I am not a big "touristy" kind of traveler. I like historic sites and "natural" sites... like state parks, etc. But lately the most exciting place I have gotten to see was likely WALMART, ha. So I guess even my idea of "excitement" is likely too boring for most people. ha. OH gee, wait.. we had a BIG hot air balloon pass over our neighborhood a few nights ago. (close enough to the ground that you could hear the fire thingie going off every time they opened it up) We actually had to put the dog inside because he was going nuts barking at it (when it went over our part of the neighborhood,) We stood out on the back deck for at least 20 minutes and watched it until it was out of sight. Now THAT is about as exciting as it gets around here sometimes.. ha.) But you are right about me (as much as it pains me to say it). If that is the most excitement I get in a week's time, I can live w/ that. I HATE drama. ha. I do like a good chat though. Exchanging ideas and blabbing w/ friends and family.. that is my "excitement." ha. (oh golly.. I really AM boring,ha) That's me, too THAT'S only because of your diet preferences, ha. All you ever want to do is eat sawdust. ha. You need to LIVE a little, kid. Try the chunky salsa now and then... it will change your WHOLE outlook on life. HA. And PS, I bet "my boring" makes YOUR boring look like a FIESTA! ha. You're way too much of a mom! Ha... now I have YOU pegged. ha. And don't swear or I will have to wash your mouth out w/ soap (you did say I was too much of a MOM, ha) :-) It's too bad you can't watch it soon. I think you would be ALL ABOUT Jerry. I'm pretty darn sure he's your kind of guy. I think (based only what I can recall from WAY back when I watched it and what I have read here) that I definitely was pulling for HIM in the whole great scheme of things. Now as to whether he would be my type of guy.. I dont' know. I think he was not strong enough to stand up to Mae when she REALLY needed to be stood up to, and perhaps held accountable for the stuff she was doing. And no, I am not talking about harping or yelling... I mean that he did not EXPECT her to behave better, and sort of looked past her flaws for a while. (I might be wrong about that because I am REALLY winging it too, ha. I wish I could remember more about the story. I really don't recall too much) Anyway.. that is something I like to see in a person.. it is what makes the QT well suited to me for sure. (not that I would even dream of putting him through all the junk MAE did Jerry) But he DOES keep me accountable. He keeps me on my toes (and I feel the same about him) so we are holding each other to the same standard because we EXPECT the other to be the sort of person they have promised to be. It is a good thing to have that in a marriage. You know you can trust that person because you know they are (as you mentioned) "constant" and consistent (in terms of behaving a certain way in any given circumstance.) Talk about being PEGGED. I can tell you (almost without fail) how the QT will react to almost ANYTHING that comes our way.. and he can likely do the same for me.. because we know one another.. and what to expect from one another. (oh gee... maybe we are even more boring than I thought,ha. But I like that in him) I'm working my way through a Ford film right now And what one would THAT be?? You have probably seen more of them than I have. (I am not as up on some of his earlier ones) And Vera Cruz is POOPY COOPY Well NOW I have to go look THAT one up right away. Go ahead and pick a Duke film for me to watch Hmm I will have to give it some thought. I WISH we could BOTH get a copy of Blood Alley (I think I remember you saying you do not have that one.. and I have not seen it in YEARS but I love that movie.. sigh) Miss G and the Movieman both convinced me I need to (finally) see The Shootist. And I TRIED to stay up late enough to watch that last night.. and fell asleep. (bah) Maybe we can get to that one sometime. Tell me what one (of his) YOU want to see. Now watch..ha. It will be one I have not seen and can't find, too, ha. We are like two "movie watchers" that pass in the night. HA! :-) PS: Miss G.. WHAT?? I would LOATHE James Mason??? Perish the thought.. The 101 Ranch story would make a good movie, if it weren't so sad That was a VERY sad tale. For all the thrills and excitement of the wild west shows they must have produced.. it was a very sad end to it all. You are right, it would make a good movie. (sometimes the sad stories do)

Howdy there little Goddess, Can you imagine, Rita has SO much hair that the studio actually had some of her forehead hair removed by electrolysis to balance her features (give her a higher forehead) Were they INSANE?????????? Oh forever more. Isn't it amazing how even someone as truly beautiful as even Rita Hayworth had to be subjected to such cold analytical review (when it came to her appearance) Now THAT is the sad UGLY truth behind all that Hollywood glamour stuff. I mean come on.. RITA HAYWORTH not lovely enough so they have to even out her forehead??? Oh for pity's sake. No wonder there are so many tabloid stories flooding all the newsstands about how MESSED up so many of the Hollywood folk are all the time. Wouldn't it be hideous to have people critiquing all your "flaws" everyday... "OK Bob... bring in the hair removal tools, Rita's forehead is sprouting again" OH BROTHER. (And PS: You have a lovely forehead and a lovely brain to match, little darlin! Ha... MY forehead is hidden beneath my scruffy, straggly bangs.. ha... so it may be high.. but it is well covered... and yet.. also NOT in proportion to my tiny pea brain for sure. ha.)

Wowsa, Ms Favell... that is really something. THANK you so much for sharing that here. My favorite part: Here were reproductions of the Old West being seriously presented to the public - in almost a burlesque manner - and they were successful. It made me tremble to' think of it. I was an actor and I knew the West...The opportunity that I had been waiting for years to come was knocking at my door If I am reading all this right, and based on what you already have shared, he really was a standard setter. And I liked how he almost sounded like a guy who just struck gold and wanted to keep it a secret long enough to file his claim, ha. He did not seem conceited either, as he realized he could make the pictures better himself. He was just able to understand what it really would TAKE to make real westerns about the real west... and not just "imitations". And it wasn't arrogance at all for him to see that one of his greatest "natural" resources for him to do that best was himself. Way cool.

OH good golly, Miss G. Even on my best day, I could be the "fashion DON'T" in one of those "hair" magazines, HA. We'll just look at Rita's hair together.. and think of what MIGHT have been. :-) PS: Miss Maven.. OH please, oh please, I do not want to have any more " true confessions". Ha. Hello there Miss B! Welcome to the "noir side" of town. I used to get tired of the "Put The Blame On Mame" number only because it was shown so often in clips without of course any context I think that is a lot of the reason I had so much trouble w/ the hair. So often those "out of context clips" are a double edged sword. It is nice to see so many people giving a nod to a great classic movie (now that I know it is a great one..ha.) But it also works against the film sometimes because w/out the proper context for all that is going on w/ Rita and WHY she is acting so "bombshellish" it just does not really tell enough of the story to do the film justice. Ok... that likely does not make sense..ha. I guess what I am saying is that it is a shame that they do not show some of the exchanges between her and Ford along w/ these other more "famous"... iconic, if you will, images. Sigh... I am such a bossy doofus. ha. Now I am trying to tell people all over the world throughout film history from the 1940's on down what filmclips I think they should use. ha. WHO do I think I am. ha. Gilda's been humiliated by Johnny's cruelty after their marriage ceremony. How much can one woman take? She's drunk when singing this iconic song, letting it (almost) all hang out. She's "telling" Johnny through the lyrics, that's right, blame me for everything because I'm beautiful and a real woman. I was always faithful, but your male ego and shaky self-esteem made you insecure and jealous, shattering what we had between us That is a great way to describe that whole performance by her. Good insight, my little Mothra twinnie! I could never see them as a "normal" couple, you know, joining the post-war move to the suburbs, raising 2.5 kids, going about their daily domestic chores as a cozy family, nope! Johnny: "Hi, honey, I'm home!" Gilda: "How was your day, dear?" Some how Gilda as June Cleaver does not exactly ring true, ha. Couldn't you just see her tossing her hair right before she says, "Johnny, I'm worried about the Beav?" OH perish the thought. HA!!!

I will be interested to hear what you think of it, little missy. And I do want to say (for sure) that I did enjoy Tumbleweeds. But I can maybe see why it is not rated quite so high as it could be. It was not a bad movie.. just a diferent "sort" of movie from Hell's Hinges. I guess I am saying that to me, Hell's Hinges was a bit more thought provoking. I think Tumbleweeds is a good film to watch "just for fun" if you want to see a "fast riding, straight shooting, rough and tumble cowboy w/ a soft spot for a pretty gal" kinda story. It is probably one of those "mood" things... where depending on what sort of MOOD you are in.. you may like it more at some times than you will at others. Think maybe more along the lines of something like... an old fashioned Saturday matinee style Western. When I watched it the other night.. I just wanted to kick back, relax, and enjoy a fun film... and watching it from THAT perspective, I was not disappointed in the least. PS.. that is a LOVELY poster, little gal. I am really liking his face more and more. ha. Still not "purty" but very nice to look at, all the same.

Since she didn't have any usable footage of the shark, she went with the idea of making the shark menacing as she could, for as long as she could, without being able to show it. Now that was some creative thinking that REALLY paid off to the benefit of the movie for sure. I was 11 (going on 12) years old when this movie came out, and it was one of the first "grown up" monster movies I ever went to the theater to see. (and if my parents had ANY idea what we were going to watch... ha. I do not imagine they'd have EVER let us go) It is STILL one of the most frightening films I can ever recall seeing. And it was SO scary the way the tension just built and built.. mainly because the monster was so "unseen" for much of the film. You only get glimpses of him here and there as he goes about causing all that mayhem. You just never knew for certain WHEN he'd pop up, but you knew he was coming... and that made him all the more frightening. (and then of course there was the MUSIC... don't even get me started on THAT. Did I mention how scary this movie is?? ha)

Well Ms Favell.. you inspired me. (ha) I did a little checking and I found TUMBLEWEEDS on youtube w/ our sweet William (ha.) It was a fun movie, and a pretty good example of an "early" western (even though not as early as some). But I have to confess NOT as good a film as Hell's Hinges. Still a good way to pass the time, though. Very entertaining w/ just the right mix of GoodGuy VS Bad Guy, a little romance, some comedy... and some really fun "action" sequences w/ the Oklahoma land race thrown in for good measure. I am glad I got to see it. I will keep my eyes open for a few more of his films, too. I am happy to be seeing some of his work, thanks to you little lady

Good golly, Miss Maven... I asked and you answered. And BRILLIANTLY, I might add!! :-) I think this is just about one of my most favorite reads from you. (and that is saying a lot kid, because you do always bring a great read to the table) Welll welll welllll...it was great to see you dust off this ol? thread and bring it back to life again, Rohanaka. It?s been so long. Thank you ma'am. I have been itching to dust it off for some time now and have missed some opportunities due to other things taking up my time. But was really glad when lovely Gilda came along (at the same time a little free time for me did too) Imagine me trying to plug up my "blab-o-meter" with all this great conversation going on.. ha. I'd have burst for sure. HA. And you revived it with one of my most uncomfortable favorite films...?GILDA.? Now that WAS a surprise. It seemed to me that I recalled this being a film you really liked, but I did not realize there was an "uncomfortable" aspect to it for you. But after reading your post I totally get why you say that. You are relating to Gilda on a VERY personal level. You've taken her hurt and torture very personally and it makes you really see her in a way that others (who just maybe watched the movie and moved on) do not. I like it when a movie can grab me like that. I really enjoy seeing beyond the surface. Gilda is a good film for that, if one wants to look deeper. there?s something unsettling to me when the heroine of the film is psychologically tortured. ?GASLIGHT? is another of my uncomfortable favorites. But I had to put aside my silly feelings for the sake of a good film. And so I?ve done with ?GILDA.? OH gee... Gaslight just about does me in. I think it is one of those films that can REALLY run you through the wringer if you let it.Gilda's plight did not drag me through it with her quite the same way as Paula's. But she was very sympathetic. (once I really started to see beyond my "notions" ) it is her role AS Gilda that has made her eternal. She gives an iconic performance. She?s playing two notes simultaneously in this movie. And I think her hair toss was a Bon Bon to us in the audience, and a nod to the movie gods. Oh yeah, I've no doubt hearts stopped in mid-beat in many a darkened movie theatre in 1946. Oh golly, girl. I bet you are right. I can just see those guys melting down into their seats from the heat of it, back then. Ha. (when did air conditioners start showing up in movie theaters? ha) But the lasting power of that image of her hair flying back over her head like that continues to get to folks all these years later. Even some one as "un-bomshellish" as me (ha) can see the truth in your calling it "iconic".And I will give credit where credit is due. It is one the more recognizable film images that has endured even to this day. EVERYONE has seen Rita toss her hair. (and most people who are less "judgmental" than I am likely end up having to put their eyes back in their sockets afterward) I just had to be all "stick in the mud" about it for so long. Ha. I did not want to look PAST the hair.. THEN. But I am looking now. She really was something. Me? I like the bombshells. I like the bombshells (Ava, Rita), the soft hard-boiled dames (Jane Greer), the hard hard-boiled dames (Ida, Marie, Claire and Linda), my tried and true girls-next-door (O?Donnell, Day and Lane) and my hard-core gorgons (Bette, Joan and Stanwyck). I know. And you (and others) have really helped open my eyes a bit more to some of them. I have likely misjudged all of these gals at one time or another... all because of that image. I'm getting better about it though. (she CAN be taught, ha) Now here is an insidiously little sexy scene: Ballin?s voice is all whispery. Gilda laying on their (?) her bed. When he questions her about knowing Johnny before, didn?t you feel the oxygen go out of the room? I know I instinctively held my breath. (And the set had to be quiet as a tomb. She does not move. She?s still. (Check it out again) OH that was a powerful moment in the story to be sure. (and you described it perfectly, gal) George Macready would do all his suavy fellow villains proud. I can hear Rathbone, Henry Daniell and Georgie Sanders cheering and probably wishing they could put their own dulcet tones to these words OH my gosh, my golly.. when he said all that "hate is the only thing that warms me" stuff. THAT told me everything... I mean EVERYTHING I would ever need to know about him. I already knew he was a bad guy.. but that took "bad guy" to a whole new level for me with him. Psychopathically chilling was putting it mildly. Gilda says: Would it interest you to know how much I hate you Johnny? I hate you so much that I would destroy myself to take you down with me. Now I?ve warned you.? Miss Maven says: She?s laid down the gauntlet. She?s going for a Pyrrhic Victory. She's taking no prisoners. Death and destruction in the game of love never looked so good or felt so hot. And this brings me around to what I mentioned in my beginning posts on this film. I really thought Gilda was a goner. And I expected it almost the ENTIRE movie. (and perhaps that is why although I was HAPPY she lived, I still felt let down a little at the end) SPOILER: With all the fire of the love/hate thing burning and burning and BURNING... and with her comments like that (about letting herself be destroyed) coupled w/ how AWFUL Ballin was.. mixed in with knowing how much she REALLY loved Johnny... topped off by all that "foreshadowing" about her supersticions and how she thought she was going to die... in my mind.. Ballin was going to make a jab for Johnny w/ that cane.. and she was going to save him (thereby proving TOO late for Johnny that she really DID love him afterall) and then of course Johnny was going to send Ballin's sorry behind straight to H_ _ _. ) THAT was yet another "pre-conceived" notion that was working on me all the way through this story. It was just dark enough that I could NOT see any way that it was going to end "happy". Even Johnny being a narrator thoughout.. that to me just meant he was looking back on all that stuff and telling us the whole sad story... I felt the movie was a bit misleading because it set me up for a GREAT TRAGIC END... and I got "warm fuzzy" feelings instead. HA!! (OH don't tell the Grey Dude.. it is bad enough just admitting it.. talk about TORTURE. How will I ever live it down, ha) I felt sorry for Gilda I did too by about the middle of the movie. And I think THAT is why I was expecting it to all go so badly for her.. I thought for SURE she was going to be this beautiful, tragic, pathetic, sad memory... for Johnny and for me. But having said that.. "warm fuzzy" is good. too. If she DID get to live, by the end of the story, I am VERY happy that it ended the way that it did. I'd have crawled through that tv and SLAPPED somebody if the two of them had gone their seperate ways after all that. ha. (I sort of take my movies a bit personally too.. if you hadn't noticed. Tell me, what does she think of Pippi Longstocking, lol? Well... ha.. before I could do that.. I'd have to let her WATCH your youtube. ha. (and now after just watching it myself... aaaggghhh. ha. I tried watching the "original" Pippi when I was a kid and she just never was my "cuppa tea" ha. The kidling is going to have to discover "Pippi" on her own someday. HA! Your daughter is deep -- you've got a budding genius on your hands, mama. And when she's older, introduce her to the delights of THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG and maybe THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW Oh good gravy. Somebody would likely have to explain BOTH of those movies to me (ha.. since I have never even seen them myself, ha) I am sure they BOTH are way over my head, ha. (but perhaps for different reasons) Those will also have to be on her "find them yourself, kid" list. HA!!! All kidding aside, I AM looking forward to introducing her to more movies as she gets older though. She really does enjoy a lot of the classics that I have let her watch. We are kind of picky what we let her see, but most of the "lighter" classics, she really enjoys. Give her time, she will get there. She sometimes is in the room w/ me as I am typing on here (her arts and craft stuff is in here so we sometimes "play" at the same time, ha) The other day she saw me mention something on here about some movie or other being on my "favorite movie list" and she later told me that Disney's Aladin and Up, and Cars were the top 3 on her list of all time "faves" ha. She is a crack up. I was in the mood for Belgian waffles and ordered them. She got the sweet and sour shrimp with rice pilaf and it smelled so good I had to order them too. So I did. Not a bad combination, actually. I've had worse. You know... they DO sound good. ha. (but I just don't know if I could handle them together. ha) The older I get.. the meaner my stomach can be, sometimes. ha. What if the seed pods arrived in Boca Raton? Can you imagine all the blue-haired canasta-playing mummies suddenly in the family way? YIKES. Perish the thought. OH gee, that sounds like it was ripped off the pages of the National Inquirer. HA. Are there any discussions going on in Rambles about THE HASTY HEART? I have not popped in there yet this evening. If there is not, I say you should start one. ha. I haven't seen it, but I am sure I would like to hear more about it.

How to Marry a Millionaire That's IT!! I just could not think of it. I have actually seen it a couple of times, but it has been a LONG time since I saw it last... I love how they keep bringing the furniture in and out everytime they run out of money.. ha. MM is probably my most favorite part of that movie though. She really was funny in it to be sure.

Ro, your kidling sounds like seven going on seventy, but that doesn't necessarily make her RIGHT HA!!!! Don't let her hear you say that!! We will have to go all the way back over it again! ha. (Mom, why is it called a musical??) HA! (that was her other question... all I could say then was "Well, I don't know.. maybe because of... the MUSIC??) ha. I love hanging out around here. You gals have given me a whole new perspective on the "bombshell" thing. Sometimes my pre-conceivedness" is a big draw back. I am sure I have missed out on a lot of good films because of it. Look at all those year I went without HB for crying out loud... (not to mention tomatoes) ha. I will check out some more Rita titles (like the one you mentioned... Seperate Tables) because I am sure I have missed some really good films. I only recall a few Rita film's (like OAHW) and to be truthful I just never really looked for any. Going back to Marilyn Monroe.... I think I need to see some more of her work too. I bet you are right (about some of her similarities to Rita) I probably know more about MM's life than Hayworth's (just because of her infamous story) but don't know nearly as much about some of her movies as I am sure I should. To be truthful, at least for now, my favorite film for MM is a comedy. (Mainly because she is SUCH a sweetheart in it.. and not all "sultry sex-kittenish".) I cannot remember the name of the movie because I am so DENSE sometimes, ha. But it is the one w/ Lauren Bacall where the three roomates are out looking for rich husbands. Those glasses she wore were a riot and she was just so doggone "innocent" too. It was a fun role for her.
