The Holts - Jack, Tim and Jennifer - A western dynasty
rohanaka replied to JackFavell's topic in Westerns
Hiya, kid! This is my favorite Bogie role, at least right now. He is so very strong in the film I think I am going to have to go with you on this one too. With my limited Bogie experience, I may be premature in saying this, but I really do think this must have been one of his best works ever. He realy was something. But from what I am seeing in the films I have gotten to enjoy with him SO FAR, ha, I am sure I have only scratched the surface. (And to think I have wasted all those years. Ha) I think the film's brutally efficient directing style is one of the reasons. John Huston never pulls away at the wrong time, is never coy about what is going on.... the camera's 'eye' never stops looking at each man (and his psyche) - that would have been death to the film. It just plays out clearly and straight forwardly That is what I like about your posts. You always have such insight into those sorts of things. You seem to understand the motives behind the direction. Huston makes sure we notice the details, not in a big spotlight kind of way, but economically. Like at the beginning, we see Bogie's collar is frayed almost beyond anything we've ever seen. When he gets his hair cut, the flourishes of the barber are captured - so foreign seeming to me.... and then we see the white, tender, weak part of Bogie's neck, where the hair has been cut away.... we will see how gold exposes and cuts through to his inner weakness, before the film is done I liked how after the barbershop scene his hat did not fit anymore. Lot?s of little details like that, but they all fit together to make the complete picture of who the characters are. Those early scenes were just FILLED with all sorts of interesting side characters too (like the barber). The little boy with the lottery tickets really got my attention. OH WOW, when Bogie throws that water in his face, any other kid would have ran out, but not him. He just sort of blinked and kept on going. Now THAT was a fine piece of acting. And I really liked the man (in the white suit) who kept getting hit up for a hand out too. The conversation between him and Dobbs was really unexpected. I like how both men treated each other. The rich guy COULD have gone in to a rant and called him all sorts of names and maybe even looked down on him. But he didn?t . He stated his case with polite respect. And I liked the way Dobbs responded. ?I only noticed the money, not the face?. You could tell he did not LIKE asking for a handout. It made me like him so much to see how sincere he was in really just wanting to get out of the hole he was in. He really started out as such a GOOD guy, it made me so sad to see the downward spiral in his character later on. -
Dadgummit!! ha. I totally missed this film the other day. I was busy from early afternoon until later in the evening and did not even get it recorded. Wow.. you folks have me kickin' myself for sure. ha. I do know it is at the library, so maybe can get it and watch sometime. I love to see a good "psycho nutjob" come unglued.... but only in the movies. ha.

Thanks for the info on Sara Allgood, Ms. Favell. She was a bit of Irish treasure, to be sure. Happy St. Pat's, young'un. :-)

The Holts - Jack, Tim and Jennifer - A western dynasty
rohanaka replied to JackFavell's topic in Westerns
Hiya Ms Favell... just wanted to pop in here and say thanks for making me more aware of the Holts. I never really knew the name, but looking through the thread, I recognize the faces... and some of the titles too. Gee, the longer I hang around here, the more I learn. And I have to say.. I just got finished watching The Treasure of the Sierra Madre for the first time. I found it at the library the other day and decided to give it a try. TOTSM has been on my wanna see list for a LONG time, but I hate to confess I sort of ignored it due to my whole "HB" thing. ha. But since I am starting to come around with him.. and then after I saw all the talk in your thread about it as well... when I saw it on the library shelf, I realized that I had put it off long enough and I HAD to give it a try. (I know.. ha.. it TOOK me long enough) :-) I thought Bogie did a real stand out job as Dobbs. But then I think all the characters were well acted. I can see why this film has been on so many people's "favorites" list. I think I would have to add it to mine now as well. (somewhere..ha. Whatever you do, don't ask me to make any more lists and rate anything in order again any time soon!! ha) Wow.. what a great story.. and some REALLY intriguing characters. Again, I think Bogie was terrific. And since this IS the Holt thread, I will add that Tim Holt's role in the film was VERY nicely played too. I liked how he and Dobbs sort of started out the same.. but ended up completely different. How they viewed the money (and what they were willing to do for it, and because of it) is what made their real "characters" rise to the top. Pretty interesting study on human nature. But truly.. I gotta say.. for this film, my heart belongs to Walter... oh golly was he good. Funny, but not "silly". Witty and gritty all at the same time... and in the end, a REAL stand up sort of guy. Very entertaining. Ok.. did not mean to interrupt. Thanks for letting me pop in here and blab a bit. Carry on, all you Holt fans! :-) -
At least Aline didn't chase hers off the front porch, down the steps and out into the lawn, emptyin' her six-shooter into his worthless hide. Hahahaha!!!!! And there won't be any bereaved widows showing up with incriminating letters.. that we know of...

moviemorlocks article on Aline MacMahon in Heat Lightning, by our own MoiraFinnie: Wow, that was a great read. Thanks for posting it, Ms Favell. :-)

The handsome guy gets the pretty girl. Yes, she sat next to Everett; even tried to act like he?s seen her dolled up before, when clearly...he had not. But keep your eternal optimism, Ro. I believe Everett will win her in the end. First, a lovely walk on the moonlit desert. Then a ride into town for some ice cream. He might even take her to a picture show. They?ll have a life together...as long as he takes it easy. Hiya Miss Maven, I think Everett will win out too, someday. (I like your scenarios about how they might evenutally progress. I see them as an older couple enjoying retirement out there in the desert someday. Like that?s a bad thing? Ummmmmm... probably depends on who is writing the definition in the dictionary. But I am glad we don't have to define it here, dear friend. :-) also think it says a lot about our Aline. That she doesn?t have to hide what she did. It could play out both ways: She shot him ?cuz he was about to steal the jewels She shot him b?cuz he admitted to using her Oh, I think she SAID A) that it was because of the jewels. But we all know it was really because of what he said. Should she have pulled the trigger??? Oh golly... I know my heart says one thing but my head says another. PS: Ollie.. glad to have you stop by, sir. I enjoyed your comments about Aline.. I need to look up some of the titles you folks have mentioned. I have some catching up to do, but I can already see (by the few of her films I have seen) why she is a favorite. She really is something, isn't she?

Remember how.............. he used to..................pause all the.................time when he ...............talked? Ha.. yes. I loved that bit. (And now you know.... the REST... of the story.) ha. it was almost like Sense and Sensibility - one sister holding it all in, the other letting it all fly.... there has to be something in between - some mix of love and common sense somewhere. or maybe not... I don't know. That is a good comparison. I especially can see maybe a bit of Elinor in Olga... not a lot.. (because Miss Dashwood was too proper, ha) But I do see how they both held in EVERYTHING to the point that nobody around them believed they ever felt anything at all. Even Everett says something like that at the end (about how anyone else might be upset, but not Olga.. because she wasn't the type to let things bother her, or something like that. I don't remember the exact line) (And PS that scene in S & S when Emma Thompson FINALLY comes unglued.. after all that time she held herself in check, OH golly, that is one of my most favorite scenes in a movie ever. ha.)
-
When you?re old enough to be going place, you?ll be smart enough to realize you?ll be better off where you are. I hope Thanks for posting that, Miss Maven. I love that line. It is going in my "Official Mom Book of Things to Say", ha. (just in case) Even though spoken by a sister, not a mom, it is a great bit of wisdom, for certain occassions. But OH,how I HOPE I never have to use it. ha. :-)
-
Wow ladies... you have said a mouthful!! (and quite nicely I might add) Miss Maven... your comments really bring out all the finer points for the story, as usual. I like how you have broken down all the characters.. even the lesser ones like Darwell. (I am still smiling just thinking about her, golly what a crack up) And I liked how you brought out that Olga (Aline) puts her "armour" back on the next day after she lets her guard down the night before. It was also like a badge of honor almost.. the way she put that bandana back on her head, it was as if she was saying, "I may have taken a hit or two, but I am not down. I'm still standing." PS Ms Favell, I adored Aline's friend, Everett, played by Willard Robinson. He had no small talk. He had no fancy clothes or fancy patter I really liked him a LOT. And he is a great example of what I mentioned about wishing this film was a bit longer so we could get to know more about some of the characters and their stories. I wanted his part in the film to be a bit more defined. And PS: both you gals.... I am such an eternal optimist.. I was so sad when I saw that she had fallen for her ex all over again. When she came outside and was transformed into this BEAUTIFUL creature, having left her overalls and work clothes for her dress and makeup, etc... I WANTED it to be for Everett, (especially since she sat down next to him). I wanted it to be as if she was saying to the former man, "I'll show you not only what you are missing, but also what I am now ready to give to someone far more worthy". I wanted it to be that kind of moment for her. But no. And consequently, (and only just for a moment) I was as disappointed in her as I was for her at that moment in the story. And I know... that sounds harsh. I don't mean for it to. It was just a passing emotion. And I think it was because I just admired her so much for the way she seemed to have taken charge of her own life (and her sister) after overcoming such a regretful past. I sort of set her up on a pedestal and hated to see her fall, even if only a short distance. And I think that may be at least a part of the same sort of emotion that broke down the sister when she finally gave in to her tears. She had just been humiliated herself.... and her one source of strength... the "idol" she had made out of her sister (that image that she used to hate of a woman who did not need a man, etc) turned out to be a false idol too... and maybe (even if ever so briefly) she felt as let down by Olga as she did by the man who had just dumped her. Seeing her sister in that "real" of a way (instead of just the way she always imagined her to be) was as if everything in her world just got turned up side down. But I do think it also HELPED her to see her sister was a "real" person afterall, and not just some tower of virtue in a pair of overalls. It will help her in the days ahead to know her sister really DOES understand how she feels. Lyle Talbot was actually fascinating. I was glad she let him go. He would go on to have a life very similar to Aline's self exile. I hope he was scared straight I hope so too. He was so much more sympathetic than his "partner" in crime. And you could tell he did not take any pleasure in the harm he was causing others. He had just fallen in with the wrong element and it had led him down a path he had not purposefully set out on . I like your scenario where he might end up in a similar life to hers... in seclusion and hidden away and maybe even helping others to "pay off" his debt to society in secret. Wasn't this movie a refreshing change from some stories (where the women are all "dainty" and need someone to come along and show them what is what or rescue them in some way? And don't misunderstand, I am by no means any sort of feminist, and would not want to be lumped in to that category, but I am just saying that I do admire stories where a woman can be shown as capable and self reliant, and yet still be able to allow themselves to rely on a man's help... so long as he IS the right man. (like Olga did in the morning... when she had to decide what to do with the dead "rat" on the floor) I like that she not only 'allowed" but asked Everett to help her. But she knew in the end she could count on him to do what she asked and never to say one word about it again as long as they lived. That's it exactly. She was capable, and likely COULD have handled dealing with the sherrif and explaining the problem, or even making the problem disappear in secret, and nobody would have been the wiser. But I am glad she chose to handle it the by letting her friend deal with it for her. I expected her to take care of the body herself too... so I was surprised (and also relieved for her) that she asked him to deal with it. I think that says a LOT about how she really viewed him as a trustworthy and valuable friend... and maybe even a bit more. OH gee, did I mention how I WISH this film was longer?? I wanted to have one of those Paul Harvey moments where we get to hear the "rest of the story". Ha
-
You're right about Gloria Grahame and Lee Marvin giving the movie its Ooooomph "Ooooomph" is the right word, little lady.. ha. With a capital "OOO" ha. This film is a great fav'rite of mine. And I'm glad you enjoyed it. I truly did, ma'am. Thanks for the recommendation. :-)

Hiya Miss Bronxie (and Miss Maven, too) I loved the nifty p.o.v. camerawork Oh wow, that shot from under the car (when the younger sister was walking away).. very creative. Jane Darwell Oh my golly, wasn't she a hoot? That whole beginning scene w/ her and her husband (as he is pushing the car) ha. VERY entertaining. I think this film had so many little "gems" like that. You know for all the serious (and even somewhat heartbreaking) themes in the story (especially between the two sisters) there were a lot of really fun moments too.(what about those two AWFUL rich women??? Oh golly... I laughed all the way through some of their little cat fights. They knew too much about one another's past to let each other get away with ANYTHING. ha.) But wow... that Aline... wasn't she SOMETHING???? It really was her movie, wasn't it? I say again, my only criticism for HL is that it was TOO short of a story. I wanted more background on the sisters... and on Olga's friend (who helps her out at the end). There were a whole lot of ways his story (with her) could have gone.. I wanted to see where that led.

I thought it was nice how Bannion was becoming very bitter, thinking everyone were "scared rabbits" but that help came to him from the least expected sources (the friends who were guarding his child, the old lady at the mechanics, the mistress of the policeman who killed himself, Debby That is a great insight. I totally agree. The look on the lady's face, (at the mechanic's place) as Bannion was questioning that guy (everytime she heard what was coming out of his mouth) you could just TELL she wanted to speak up.. but had to do it in a less obvious way. And I loved the bit w/ the Army men protecting the little girl.. OH golly.. those guys knew what it took to get the job done. In a world that is ugly enough to sometimes feel like it is almost running over w/ "bad guys" like Marvin's character... it is nice to know there are still some "good guys" out there too. :-)
-
Hi my little "Boca Twin"!! WOW, look at YOU out here making lists... and putting me to shame even MORE than I already have been. ha. Everybody has so many films on here that I have not seen yet.. but YOU take the cake kid. I am going to have to go check out most of the titles on your lists to see what I have been missing!! I was thinking of putting good old Kong on my male list, HA! Ha.. well, you know, our other buddy Godzilla was on my mind, too. But I think I have a soft spot for the original Kong. For me he is like the "father" of all movie monsters. :-)

was really struck this time by how young Lee Marvin looked! Just a pup, yet SO explosive. You just can't be completely at ease with him, he's so dangerous and you don't know when he's going to surprise you! So both he and Gloria really got to shine, I think, and must have made people in Hollywood REALLY sit up and take notice of them both if they hadn't already. Boy, oh boy was he ever a MENACE. You know.. I likely should have mentioned him (w/ regard to how I felt about the beginning of the film) his character was the one who stood out the most for me at first. (OH how GOOD can one guy be at playing such MEAN and awful men.. ha.) (Mini spoiler) OH, when they were trying to figure out how to "get" Ford's character where he hurt the most... and the implication was (without saying it) that they were going to go after his daughter... OH golly, the look on Marvin's face (almost of glee) was enough to make me want to go make a pot of coffee for him MYSELF!!!!!
-
Hiya Mr. Movieman... I will keep a look out for the film you mentioned... It sounds like one I would enjoy (and my beloved Victor M is in it... woohoo.) If I may make a quick interruption here... I just wanted to bring up Heat Lightning. I got to watch that one last night (and was so proud of myself that I stayed awake (as late as it was) all the way to the end. OH wow. I had never even heard of this film before last night... and BOY was I glad to have seen it. It was chock full of really great characters and a truly interesting (and attention getting) story. I liked how the entire film took place over just one day and night... but it seemed to really fill each moment with a lot of info about who the characters were and their various personalites. My only criticism.. it was TOO short. Once I got to know everyone.. I wanted to know MORE. (maybe it is just the nosey busy body in me..ha) Anyway.. I say again, I am glad to have caught this one. A very good (if too short) story.

Ha.. April and Jackie.. we are sisters... with or without MINK. (I am a "without"... the closest thing I have to a fancy coat would be my worn out insulated denim jacket) ha. April.. I think you have described her character "set up" early on in the story just right. It is easy to underestimate her because of her "shallow" appearance. But wow, in the end... I guess it was Lee Marvin's character who REALLY underestimated her. OH me, oh my. That is why I just had to have her on my favorite characters list I can see why now... she certainly is "list worthy". But OH ME, ha, I am not even going to LOOK at my list again.I don't have enough brain cells left after all that work to revise it. ha.

OK, all you Gloria folk... I am happy to report (finally) that I got to watch The Big Heat when it was on last evening. (Grey Guy, Molo, Miss Maven.... I think you three were the ones I PROMISED I would watch this film someday) Now I have to say... without Gloria... (and the way her character turns out in the latter middle portions and at the end of the film) I likely would NOT have been all that wowed by this one. I might have thought it was just "ok" but nothing to really make me think it was all that special. Now before you all "mob" me... ha.. read on, because you will see that I did NOT keep that opinion. But I am just saying that at the beginning, I thought the story and the film itself (including most of the acting) was more or less just average. Now don't get me wrong, Gloria did ok at the start, and Ford was good too, but again, there was just not much at the beginning that really GOT my attention. Even though there were some interesting and even tense moments in the earlier portions of the film that made me see why some would rate it higher than others.. it still did not really "wow" me all that much. (At least at the beginning) In fact as I was watching I was thinking maybe this film was one of those that I had heard TOO many good things about and my expectation level was too high. (that has happened to me before when I have been disappointed in a film). So just as I had started thinking that very thought.. IT happened. OH my GOLLY!!!! (And I am talking about THE scene between Marvin and Gloria) OH me. POOR Debbie!!!!! (or is it Debby??) OH golly. I knew SOMETHING happened to her (to cause injury) somewhere along the line in the story, but I didn't know it was THAT!!!!!!!! CAROLINA!!! That got my attention pretty quick. The whole tone of the movie changed for me at that moment.. and then later on when she goes to see Ford at the motel... April.. I saw the beginnings of what you mentioned about how Debbie "saved" him. And when she goes to BERTHA'S house... and just after her "We're sisters under the mink" line... At the end of that scene (as she left the house) all I could do was whisper, "Oh Debbie". I was blown away, no pun intended. Her final scenes in the film were spectacular too... and now.. after having watched the WHOLE thing... I CAN see why so many have given it such high marks.. especially where Gloria's performance was concerned. So now I can say truthfully how MUCH I really did enjoy The Big Heat, and I am really glad to have been able to catch this film (at last!) :-) Edited by: rohanaka on Mar 14, 2010 8:33 PM

Give me those scissors! NOT on your life!!! ha. No way I would trust you w/ those things (at least not within throwing distance!!) ha And where's that snake, Rip Darrow? OH Please.. ha. Snake, indeed. For pete's sake, He is JUST your kinda male lead in a movie. I can't believe you liked that lowlife scumbag Harry in Night and the City and did NOT like Rip... OH good grief.. ha. A list of your favorite films and characters of all time is one of the most challenging It is fun... and challenging. (ha.. it is even interesting and FASCINATING!! ha) I like how it made me really examine some long held positions I had had as to what I always thought I really liked about certain characters in a story. I had some real challenges w/ some of the ones I THOUGHT were my faves when I started comparing them to some of the others on my list. (and PS, RE: the favorite Dukes... I bet my list now even looks different from way back a long time ago when you asked me to rank my fave Duke characters... I can't believe the Ringo Kid is not in my top 50.... I think he SHOULD have been.. but then I can't decide who I would bump and replace w/ him... it is a tough call sometimes. And I will say also that my list is a much different one TODAY than it would have been even a year ago. (And I want you to know..ha. I blame YOU!! ha. And all my other friends on this board, ha.) Hanging out with you folks on here has widened my horizons a lot. I have seen more new (old) films in the last year (or two) than I can even keep track of. I'd say most like Walter Brennan, but it's rare for anyone to name his characters amongst their all-time favorites. I just love his range. I think he is one who can be funny, sympathetic, tragic, and even downright SCARY, and carry it off PERFECTLY no matter what. (although I do confess Iike his "kinder, gentler" side better than his MEAN one.. GOLLY can he do "scary". ha) I really like "soft" beauty. What... no love for the old hag women. ha. (like Ma Stone?????) Actually.. I do know what you mean. There is something very lovely about all the women you mentioned that goes beyond their face. At least on film anyway. I don't know what they were all like in real life. I tend to lean more toward (as you might have guessed) the down to earth gals... and yes I do like fiesty... I also like a bit gritty and older, too. The "glamour factor" is not as high on my list for most of my favorites. Although I don't discriminate by looks, age or even by social status. I just like them to be realistic and at least somewhat practical along w/ being entertaining too. I want them to be well grounded (even if they act a bit zany or nutty too, ha). I don't know if I am "splaining" right or not..ha. But the women like Mary Kate, Ma Stone, and many of the Jean Arthur characters are just more "me" I guess. Ha. What I like about most of the the men on my list (most, not all) is easier to pin down for me. And you likely already know.. ha. I like to KNOW what side of the fence they are on (in terms of their "black" or "white" status. Most of the men on my list (with the exception of only a few) you can pin down pretty easily as to which color hat they wear. (Although I do confess to SOME grey out there.. I mean, Ethan... and likely Tom for example, are a bit less white.. a bit more 'dingy gray.. I mean "grey".) But they end UP w/ a White Hat (at least in MY book, anyway, ha) And Leave Her to Heaven is one you'll really get a kick out of. It's a different kind of "Rhoda. That is a movie I keep MEANING to look up and never remember to watch out for. But it has always sounded like she would be a character I would LOVE to hate for sure. And PS: Miss G... speaking of RHODA... How oh HOW could I have forgotten our little buddy, LEROY?? He is not to be found on my top 50 list ANYWHERE.. and gee, he should be!!! (I smile EVERYTIME I think of him.. ha) And I think I told you that we name our cars... And the QT is even such a fan, that he named his car after him.. ha. (But OH that poor car is over 10 years old now... it is really showing it's age. It may not be with us much longer if we don't get some work done on it.. ha.) But we have had so much fun w/ the name... Everytime the QT says, "Let's take LeRoy" I always tell him I want to sit in the "little pink chair" ha. And then I ask him, "Do you think there will be any stick blood hounds out there on the road??" ha. It's like this little "comedy" routine we have. But we are the only ones who likely find it funny. ha. What can I say.. ha.. we are easily entertained around here. And a big PS!!! JACKIE!!! You DID it gal!! Nice job!!!!! And WHAT a list!! Oh my golly, there WERE some surprises!! (Muley over BEN????????????????) But wow..you have a lot of films on YOUR list I have never seen too... I need to make a list off of everyone ELSE'S lists.. and add anything missing to my Wanna SEE list, ha) Oh.. and one that I LOVED on your list... Uncle Kris from I Remember Mama... OH me.. I should have had him on MY list.. that guy cracks me up, ticks me off, and breaks my heart... ha. all at the same time!! ha.
-
Oh!! No, I am the last to know.. ha. I knew Jackie was under the weather.. but not Scotchie too. Golly gals.. get to feeling better, the BOTH of you. :-) (And ps. ha. don't breathe on ME. ha. The kidling has had a nasty head cold all week, and I am hanging on by a thread!! ha)
-
Hello, My DEAR Grey Guy, I'm completely impressed Ha.. well don't be. I meant what I said to Jackie.. I am embarrassed to admit how HARD it was for me to do this whole thing!! ha. I also meant what I said to you about how much I admire your (and Miss G's) ability to know your own mind so well. YOU listed a HUNDRED of each, for pity's sake. I could likely list a hundred characters... but getting them in any kind of coherent order... no way. Fifty just about did me in!! ha. love that you have villains Of course I do.. ha. I AM Mrs. Black and White after all. Without the bad guys... all those white hats would just be a bunch of "do-gooders" ha. I do love (to hate) a good bad guy. So that part of my list wasn't much of a surprise to me. (Although some of the rankings were) you even have Darth Vader on the list and he's above Indy! I know.. ha. (now that WAS a surprise, ha) If you had known me when I was like 18 (and you would have been what?? 3 months old???ha. Kidding.. but it WAS a long time ago) My beloved INDY would have been WAY so very WAY at the top of my list back then.. ha. I've come a long way, baby!! ha. I didn't know you liked Danny (Robert Montgomery in Night Must Fall) so much. So you'd fall for him, eh HA!!! No.. I don't think I'd fall for him. ha. As "magnetic" a personality as he had... guys like that almost ALWAYS have something to hide (although who knew it was a HEAD in a HATBOX??? ha) I liked him for his PSYCHO-ness. ha. I love the way Montgomery played him... terrifying one moment and utterly sympathetic and boyish the next.. It was a great character. (and PS: Norman Bates ALMOST made my list.. if I had gone just a bit further than fifty, he'd be on there) too much Duke and Ford. Blah Ha.. you KNEW they'd be there.. ha. If I had left them off, you'd have think someone else had been doing my homework for me. ha. I just want to know did I push the Duke WAY over the top on your rating system now... ha!! You have to be the biggest Walter fan on the board Ha.. I don't know if I am the biggest, but I am among his most faithful. Ha. I will GLADLY watch old Walter in just about ANYTHING. ha. And I love it when I come across him in some unexpected film that I did not realize he was in. ha. He is always a treat for me. I have yet to see him in any movie where I did not thoroughly enjoy at least HIS role in the film (even if the movie itself was stinker) If we were doing a list of just favorite character actors, I think he'd be at the top. (Oh gee... ha. I better go check Jackies's old Squirrly thread and make sure I can back up that statement. ha) you must be the biggest Dame May Whitty fan around. Now that surprised me. I do enjoy her a LOT, and it surprised me too, how many of her roles ended up on my list. Although for a while as I was juggling, I was not sure how many of them would make it above the fifty line. I almost pulled out another Edna May Oliver and put it in the mix.. she got bumped though in my final cut, ha. Jean Arthur! Now Jean was the biggest surprise for me too. I knew I liked her a lot. But never realized until making this list how many of her characters were favorites for me. She is probably in my top five or so of favorite actresses, so I guess I should not have been so suprised. (and PS: Chris.. I have not seen the film you mentioned, but have heard of it. I need to check it out!) You like the women of Hitchcock more than Snippy. That's an upset Ha.. well.. the ones I listed are all ones that I like for the way they handle themselves and also the way they handle the situations they get put in. Most of them are very capable and smarter than they may first appear.. I like that about them too. (it gives me hope for myself.. ha) And PS: YOU have some surprises on YOUR list for me as well.. ha. You ranked SCARLETT higher than I did. (ha.) I was worried Miss G was going to hit me for ranking her below both Mellie AND Mammy.. ha. And also.. TERRY MCKAY???? Oh golly... what are you, a mushy "romance guy" or something?? ha. That one was a surprise. I knew you had told me you liked that one (surprise there, too) but was knocked over to see her make your list (and so high up, too) You and Miss G and Miss Scotchie all have a LOT Of charcters on your lists I have not seen (some I never even HEARD of) so I have some catching up to do with you three to find out what I have been missing. The ones on your list that I am most interested in would be Gloria in The Big Heat (which I think is coming up, soon, so I hope I can catch it) Thelma on P/U on South Street... which I TOTALLY missed all but HER big moment near the end when this was on the last time. (I am going to try and catch it all on youtube soon, I hope.) And I have been wanting to see Gene in Leave Her to Heaven and my Sweet Maureen in The Wings of Eagles for like... FOREVER. ha. So maybe I can catch both one of these days. OH.. and *YOU* had a lot of COOPER's on your list that I have been wanting to see... now that was surpsise.. ha. (that you had so many GARY"S!!) I also want to see... drum roll please... ha.. Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon) ha. You and Miss G both have him on your list.. I trust HER recommendation. ha. (PS: Miss Scotchie... I was surprised too that you had Holley from Battleground on your list.. but don't know why I should be. YOU are a smart cookie.. ha. What a great character and perfect for Johnson.) Nice job on all your listings, youngun... YOU went to SIXTY!! ha) PS: Miss G--- RHODA!!!! ha. I HAD to list her.. ha. She was just too much FUN to leave out!! ha. PS: Jackie.. hope you are feeling BETTER today. Because I hated hearing you have been under the weather (but also because I am dying to read your LIST!! ha)

Ha.. thanks Jackie.. and, well, don't be TOO impressed, kid. I am embarrassed to admit how HARD this was..ha. I likely could have spent even MORE time on it, but then I'd NEVER have posted it. ha. Hope you have better luck organizing your thoughts (and hope you are at least feeling a little bit better, kid) I'll be on the edge of my seat, waiting for you little gal. :-) And PS: I won't be surprised if we DO have some in common.ha. We ARE long lost sisters, after all. ha.

OK. Here goes nothin'. ha. I am such a LOUSY list maker, (I always leave something out, or forget what order I want things to go in, ect.) but as I mentioned earlier, Mr. Grey, YOU and Miss G have inspired me. OH ME, I am so impressed by your ability to know your own mind. GOOD golly, you two. You make it look so easy. But it is WAY so very way hard. Ha. Now I imagine I will find all sorts of flaws after I post this , and think of a GAZILLION other characters in all sorts of other movies and wish I had listed them all in a different order, blah blah blah, (ha) But here is my list to DATE (and it is subject to change at any given moment, such as it is) ha. *TOP 50 MALE CHARACTERS* 1)Tom Doniphan-TMWSLV (John Wayne) 2)Ethan Edwards-The Searchers (John Wayne again) And I have to be honest, I go back and forth with #1 and #2 all the time but this is how I will rate them TODAY.(ha) 3)Rooster Cogburn-True Grit.(but not so much in the sequal, Rooster Cogburn, ha) Yes, I know. Ha. ANOTHER Duke. I am hopeless, ha) 4)Jefferson Smith - Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Jimmy Stewart) 5)Hondo (GO DUKE!! Ha.) (Grey Dude, I SWEAR I am not stacking the deck here, ha) 6)Gus McCrae- Lonesome Dove (Robert Duvall) (And he use to be in my firstplace spot for a male Western character , so THIS is an interesting turn of events for me. But lately I have been so immersed in Ford, the Duke has finally beaten him out) 7)Danny- Night Must Fall (Robert Montgomery) (YIKES, I am getting the creeps just THINKING about him in this movie) 8)George Bailey- It?s a Wonderful Life (Jimmy Stewart) 9)Will Kane-High Noon (Gary Cooper) 10)Jimmy Malone-The Untouchables. (Sean Connery) 11)Liberty Valance- TMWSLV (without Lee Marvin it would just have been ?The Man who Shot) ha. OH GOLLY what a bad guy. 12)Red Will Danaher- The Quiet Man ( Victor Mclaglen) 13)Bull Stanley-3 Bad Men (Tom Santschi) 14)Gypo- The Informer (Victor Mclaglen again) 14)Destry -Destry Rides Again (Jimmy Stewart) 15)Stumpy (one of Rio Bravo?s Finest, ha) Walter Brennan) 16)Rhett Butler- Gone With the Wind (Clark Gable) 17)Mortimer Brewster-Arsenic and Old Lace (Cary Grant) 18 Kid Dabb-Only Angels Have Wings (Thomas Mitchell) 19)Pastor Pyle- Sergeant York (Walter Brennan) 20)The Cowardly Lion- The Wizard of Oz (Bert Lahr) I only recently discovered he is my all time fave character in that movie, (except for maybe TOTO, that is) ha. 21)KING KONG (the original of course, in the movie of the same name, ha. Played by, KING KONG. Ha) 22)Shane- Alan Ladd 23)Gil- The OxBow Incident (Henry Fonda) 24)Big Jake McCandles (yes I know, ha. It just got so difficult, ha, I finally just gave up and decided to go w/ what I?ve got (but the first twenty or so are pretty much right) 1)Mary Kate Danaher-The Quiet Man (Maureen O?Hara) (big surprise, I know, ha) 2)Katherine Sloper-The Heiress (Olivia de Havilland) 3)Beth March-Little Women (Margaret Obrien) 4)Mother York ?Sergeant York (Margaret Wycherly) 5)Melanie-Gone With The Wind (Olivia de Havilland) 6)Elinor Dashwood-Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson) 7)Ma Stone-Jane Darwell (The Devil and Daniel Webster) 8)Mary Bailey-It?s A Wonderful Life (Donna Reed) 9)The Wicked Witch of the West/Miss Gulch-The Wizard of Oz (Margaret Hamilton) 10)Calamity Jane-The Plainsman (Jean Arthur) 11)Bonnie-Only Angels Have Wings (Jean Arthur) 12)Tootie-Meet Me in St. Louis (Margaret O?Brien) 13)Saunders-Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (Jean Arthur) 14)Paula-Gaslight (Ingrid Bergman) (are you HAPPY now, Grey Dude??? HELLOOOOOOOO Mr. Grey.... No, no, no. I gave 50 points to the actor and actress who ranked #1 on her lists and then my lists Ok.. I think I get it... Are you saying you're going to make a list of your 50 favorite male and female characters... in order? You? Really? C'mon! Ha.. yes I know.. hard to believe aint it??? ha. Would it surprise you to know that I have been working on one already????????? ha. You folks inspired me over the weekend..ha. But I did not get all the way to fifty.. and then I got distracted by another project.. and then I got busy with some stuff.. etc, etc.. ha. ( but I am about up to 30 on the men.. have not started the women yet) I will TRY to get it finished.. SOMEtime in the next few days (weeks, months..years) :-) Are you going to sway the vote by being dishonest with your rankings?! NO way.. ha. I am TOTALLY respectful of the voting process. ha. (and just to show you I MEAN it..ha.. KING KONG is even on my list (because it IS a "favorite character's list) ha. So that has to tell you I have NO hidden motives..ha. If I did, I'd be stacking more and more Duke films than anything...ha.) And where's the Ingrid Bergman characters for Miss Whosits Well.. I'd have to go back and re-read her list again to see how we compare.. but I will tell you that Ingrid is going to make my list... somewhere... Ohhhhh, I see what you're up to. You want to see Wayne and O'Hara at the top Ding! Ding! Ding!!! We have a winner!! So my real question here is... will you disqualify me if I can only (finally) get a list of say.. 43?? or 38?? ha. Just random numbers... I have not had so much trouble since I took the bait and tried to list my top gazillion (or was it 100?) Westerns. Ha. (I think I only made it into the 60's.... ha. NOT because I did not have 100 Westerns that I liked.. I just could not think of them all in an orderly "list worthy" fashion. ha. I am worried I am going to have the same problem here.. but I can TRY. So how about a Mitchum-O'Hara pairing? Hmmmmmmmmmmm OH gee... He IS on my list in a couple of places... (note to self... make sure all your Duke films rank higher up than all your Mitchums....) oh.. uh... pretend you didn't see that..ha. (did I mention I respect the voting process??????) ha.

I was actually not feeling well for a few days anyway, and though I felt better this morning, I seem to have lost some steam since then. Whoa, little missy... sorry to hear it. Hope you will be feeling better soon, and that you'll soon be back up and running full steam ahead again. :-)
