  1. In looking through some of these older topics, I thought I'd "revive" this one to highlight one of my favorites (which is both British and involves royalty):

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) - in fact, there are several great Ealing Studios films which were featured on TCM within the past year. I hope they show some of these Alec Guinness classics again sometime soon!

  2. Maybe he'll remake it as a comedy ...

Seriously though, this sounds like one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. To Kill A Mockingbird with Gregory Peck is almost a perfect realization of a great novel, IMO. I don't believe it could possibly done any better with any better cast.

While I'm not completely against remaking classic movies, I believe the target should be movies that were great in concept but that just didn't work for some reason: casting, bad timing (released at the same time as some national crisis or another movie which overshadowed it), censorship issues, etc.. I think there MUST be a lot of films made in the 30's-60's which fit this bill. It's just stupid to try to remake Psycho et al.

  3. antar, agreed! Though I will admit that in my youth I was completely UNINTERESTED in watching a film if it was in B&W. Then, when I got my own little B&W around the time I turned 17, and I started watching it a lot ... I got used to it and then, much later, I began to really appreciate the B&W medium.

Apologies in advance though, I was initially fascinated (vs. horrified) when Turner started colorizing the old classics. I thought "wow, now I can see what everything is supposed to look like". However, once I saw It's a Wonderful Life in color, I said "this is bad, everything looks awful ... give me back the B&W image".

So, you live and learn I guess;-)

  4. Wow, what a great list, basil!!!

Looking through it, I'm thinking "surely they received a nomination for that portrayal" ...

Anyway, thanks for compiling it and sharing it. I don't have the time (or inclination;-) right now, but I'm also thinking that in the past 25 years or so when they started giving Oscar nominations and awards to many of the great actors from the 1930-1950s who were still around and acting in their 70s & 80s, that there were probably some more current actors/actresses that were "screwed out of an Oscar nomination" or award too. But who can fault the Academy or its voters for that;-)
