As tcmprogrammer has said, constructive criticism is welcome (and helpful). In the past (almost 3 years now), I've noticed many suggestions made on these boards taken to heart by TCM. BTW, I also missed getting the last few minutes of the Red Lily, but since someone else "beat me to the punch" and posted about it, I didn't feel the need to do it (or pile on;-) ... perhaps it will be scheduled again soon, let's hope so. In any case, your question about what is in TCM's library was answered twice in the challenge thread and six (& counting) others were able to participate given the generalized information provided. There's still time if you'd like to try. I'd love to see your choices, and you may even win the prize!

Database/Schedule linkage error
path40a replied to path40a's topic in PROBLEMS with the Message Boards
Perhaps I'm the only one who cares about this issue;-) In any case, some of the June schedule is in the database search, but not all of it. For example, if one searches for "On the Waterfront", the June 4th airing is listed, the June 30th is NOT. When will the whole month of June's schedule be included in the database search? -
Pretty easy to criticize when you have no concept of the complexity & difficulty of the task at hand, given the restrictions. The challenge was supposed to give persons such as yourself at least a clue as to what it takes. I can't say that I'm surprised that none of "you" has taken the time to participate, just disappointed that you haven't. Everyone who's tried has gained an appreciation of this (even though only a week has been asked for), and it's a cop-out to say "it's not my job". Not taking the challenge while continuing to complain reveals a lot about "you". Your accusation about TCM's programmer(s) "respect for the classics" has no merit; I'm only sorry "he" felt the need to respond to such trolling. Constructive criticism is one thing, cluttering up these boards with the same baseless rants month after month is another.

I agree with you lynn. Favorite directors are one thing, and I certainly count Wyler, Wilder, Preston Sturges, and Ernst Lubitsch among my favorites. But influential was the word you used when you began this thread, and I think (other than perhaps Hitchcock, as well) Ford was it.

Well, my tivo didn't catch the last of the film, so I missed the sewer chase scene entirely. But I thought the plot was similar to Waterloo Bridge in a way. It just goes to show how hard it is to be original given film's history, eh?

Found on another website: Among the world's filmmakers who have been devotees of Ford's work are Jean-Luc Godard, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Wim Wenders, and Orson Welles. Most have heard the quote, attributed to Welles, when asked who influenced him the most, he said he'd learned from the masters "John Ford, John Ford, and John Ford". Let me add that I'm amazed how few younger film fans, with the exception of those who participate here that watch TCM, recognize his contributions to film (perhaps they don't like Westerns and/or associate him only with that genre?) or director Ford as one of the best. I'm really not sure why that is, but then again I'm amazed by those who also don't respect Ford's frequent co-collaborator John Wayne's body of work. Message was edited by: path40a

if you could get TCM to show 1 Movie, What would it be??
path40a replied to Victor's topic in General Discussions
Yes, and they've aired it twice within the past 2 years. -
Terrific job, Rusty, and thanks for taking the time to complete a week's programming for TCM! Thanks also for the explanatory post, always helpful & interesting to read.
-
I'll look forward to your entry Rusty! NOTE: less than one week to go on this challenge, and the benefits of participating have been noted (e.g. by allie). Plus, they'll be a prize!

This is great news allie, and worth making a note of; your efforts were not in vain!

Database/Schedule linkage error
path40a replied to path40a's topic in PROBLEMS with the Message Boards
I've cleared my cache, even tried different browsers, but still no go. Is anyone else able to search the tcmdb.com database to find that (e.g.) Ball of Fire (1941) is scheduled in June. In my attempts, Ivan the Terrible 2 (also on 6/30) is not found either. -

Database/Schedule linkage error
path40a replied to path40a's topic in PROBLEMS with the Message Boards
Once a new schedule is posted (e.g. like June now has been), how long does it take for the database to reflect it. Just now, I searched for Ball of Fire, and the April date is there but the June 30th date is not. Will it be 4/1 before the June schedule/database linkage appears? -
Looks like Anthony Quinn (Wednesdays) might be June's SOTM. The "Billy, How Did You Do It? (2006)" feature, about director Wilder, looks like an all new documentary. Should be interesting!

Thanks for your interest (and encouragement), but I think there would be a conflict of interest if I participated in this one. However, I'll probably submit an entry in the next programming challenge that was proposed (provided someone else starts it). I was tempted to submit an entry that included only films released since 1980 though ... with plenty of anime;-) Message was edited by: path40a

With 10 days to go, we have five EXCELLENT entries thus far: lzcutter - http://forums.turnerclassicmovies.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=7785946 filmlover - http://forums.turnerclassicmovies.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=7785902 allieharding - http://forums.turnerclassicmovies.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=7785693 hlywdkjk - http://forums.turnerclassicmovies.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=7784437 MattHelm - http://forums.turnerclassicmovies.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=7783585 Thanks to each of you for participating; I hope that we will have more submissions before the deadline (3/31/6 - once it's April 1st in your time-zone). I will be opening a separate thread sometime on April 1st (no fooling!), with a link to everyone's entry, for voting - one vote per registered user. No secret balloting, each board member will have one week (through Friday, April 7th) to post their selection to the voting thread. Since I believe that there will be a TCM provided prize, and to prevent ballot stuffing, only votes from those registered prior to the challenge announcement (2/26/6) will be deemed valid.
