  9. You're in luck, Emma is on Tuesday morning at 4:45 AM ET!
  10. So many great movies to watch this week. In fact, you could just about alert the whole schedule;- ) However, I want to point out a couple of my very favorites of the ones being shown (in case you haven't seen them, you shouldn't miss 'em): Thursday - 2:00 PM The Corn Is Green (1945) A dedicated teacher sacrifices everything to send a young miner to Oxford. Bette Davis, Nigel Bruce, John Dall. D: Irving Rapper. BW 114m. CC DVS Friday - 11:00 AM The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) An unscrupulous movie producer uses everyone around him in his climb to the top. Kirk Douglas, Lana Turner, Dick Powell. D: Vincente Minnelli. BW 118m. CC DVS Saturday - 7:30 AM The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) A misfired flirtation lands a young lieutenant married to a princess instead of the one he loves. Maurice Chevalier, Claudette Colbert, Miriam Hopkins. D: Ernst Lubitsch. BW 89m.
  11. Stella, very sorry to hear about your Grandfather. Both mine passed before I was very old (not that I'm very old now;- ) but both my Grandmothers are still here (over 90 now!). BTW, did you ever hear from stlgal? I hope she's doing all right and has just found something more interesting to do with her time than participate here;- )
  12. I dislike ANY singer who has to use special effects throughout a song she sings!
  13. Always nice to find another Veronica Lake fan, she's been one of my favorites ever since I "discovered" her;- ) Also, I have to add someone who I believe has been left out so far. Besides Olivia de Havilland (a little more wholesome yet almost as beautiful as Hedy and Merle), I really like Maureen O'Hara who is still beautiful today!
  14. I don't know about this one. While I agree that she seemed to play the same character, over and over, in different movies, I think what you are really referring to is her "lack" of range. While it may be that she wasn't pushed (or didn't choose) into roles which would exhibit anything more, one shouldn't take for granted her ability. It's been said that comedy, in particular, is very hard to do ... which I happen to think is true. Also, your "complaint" could also be applied to Cary Grant and James Stewart, who I would have to say "fit right in" to the Most Likeable Stars thread. Both these gentleman, with the possible expections of their Hitchcock roles (and perhaps the Westerns Stewart did, which were later), pretty much played the same kind of men in their films. In fact, until Brando introduced method acting in "The Men", I think one could say that much of the acting done up until that point was pretty staid (unless it was grossly overplayed for effect). Hence, a lot of the great actors we love weren't given roles which required much more than playing the star the studio system crafted for them.
  15. Grand Hotel ... for another clue, I don't think there was a set designer in that film;-)
  16. Well, Larry King probably thinks a character like the one she plays in The Manchurian Candidate is the personification of some of the political folks he knows, and has on his show, which he doesn't find so despicable;-) Anyway, according to today's paper, he asked her about the remake of that movie which in the works starring Denzel Washington with Meryl Streep in the role she played. She wasn't too keen on the idea (how can you top the best?) but thought if anyone could make it interesting it would be Ms. Streep.
  17. Mongo, I agree completely that Ms. Lansbury could've played Nurse Ratched based upon her incredibly evil performance in The Manchurian Candidate. However, I'm a little confused by your statement "she didn't want to play such a despicable character". I think the character she played in The Manchurian Candidate is pretty despicable too, don't you?
  18. Thanks moviejoe! I've been waiting for TCM to show Dodsworth (it's on March 1 and twice in April) and I also like Dinner at Eight very much (it's on twice in March)!
