Thanks Dee...
Yeah british school. A very strict private british school, of somewhat "old tradition", founded in 1928. Here there are much older schools, as in the States that go back to the XIXth Century. I entered the school in 1973, I applied to kindergarten (as its called here, in german...don't ask my why), and they (the school) said I was too clever (at least as a child) and put me in 1st grade. There my troubles began... all my clasmates were elder, so....well most of the teachers (although there were many the were from my country) came from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the rest of the-then Commonwealth (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, etc....I even remember people from German descent, well the british Royal Family IS German, the name Windsor was invented during the First W.W., 'cos their real last name is Hannover-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha) In my whole life at school I remember only once seeing a north-american teacher, they were very picky. Al the Headmasters, and deputy headmasters, were brought from abroad. An we were supposed to address all of them only in english, and noy in any english, in "british" english. We celebrated the memorial of the fallen heroes in W.W. I & II, we wore the "Poppy", sang the british anthem, it was like living in another country within a country. Altough at my time canings were supposed to be forbidden, some teachers beat me anyway along my life, even once I had my head injured by a metal whistle, with which a sports (rugby) professor hit me. Hard.
Well, there (at the Libraries) I had access to many books and stuff that encouraged me to pursue this passion of mine, cinema...there were books about british stars, others named Films in Review, from the forties, Tallulah's biography, etc...then i started to buy stuff in my country and abroad.
Yeah, I was also reluctant/skeptical at first, about dvd's, but being a music fan....I started buying certain Jazz and Britpop ('80s mainly) dvd's...like Harry Connick Jr., Sinatra, Ella Fizgerald, Diane Schhurr, Sade, New Order, Erasure, etc...then I started with my collection of classics..Now, I haven't stopped taping or buying vhs, 'cos many classics aren't released on dvd...so i have collectios of both vhs, taped and original, and dvd's....in all i must have more than 800 movies?...i don't know, but i also own some newer movies like "Down with Love", "The Exorcist", "MacBeth", "Barry Lyndon"...well I'm married, and I also like some of the new stuff, and my wife too has her own tastes. I also have a big collection of cd's, more than 1.000, and tapes that go back to 1979, some recorded from radio stations, and others, originals. BTW I also had a huge stamp collection and vinyls, some very old...and I sold these last a month ago.
My sister-in-law taped for me The Last of Mrs. Cheyney, and when I get it, I'm eager to watch it...of course!!! I like very much Shearer and Rathbone...I'd love to see a film he made opposite Kay Francis in 1930 or 1931, don't remember the name right now, i've heard it's too far-fetched...but they are both faves of mine.
The Wizard of Oz, I've seen it soo many times, that i didn't want to buy it...although it is a beloved film from my childhood...I don't like as much anymore.
Smash-Up, I taped it from Hallmark. Great film!!!
I love Hercule Poirot, especially Finney, Miss Marple, George & Mildred, Benny Hill, Sherlock Holmes, everything Maggie Rutherford was in, etc...

TCM-USA ('cos I've read here at the boards, that some viewers of TCM-abroad (Australia i.e.) have complained about having different programming policies) is the best classics channel on the market in the whole world, period.
I live in South America, and whenever I go to the States to my in-law's home, I tape, and tape, tape...I've got almost 200 movies taped, shorts, Osborne and Pollack's comments, etc, all I can get (for my personal, private use and enjoyment of course)..and yes I buy a lot of dvd's and vhs, 'cos here there's no other way of gettin' classics!!! (i'm a regular at Kino, Amazon, Movies Unlimited, et al..stores, on the net) And when I travel to the U.S., Suncoast, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Sam Goody, Best Buy, Virgin, et al tremble!!! 'cos I save all the year to buy, and buy....yes, yes I have no children, so it's a lot easier for me.
Here, Blockbuster has a poor stock of classics to rent, and Cable TV or Satellite channels that show classics are scarce....FOX has only shown "Jane Eyre" (with lots of commercials), Film & Arts (aka known as Bravo) is always airing the same stuff, repeatedly: Pygmalion, Blithe Spirit, Major Barbara, The Grass is Greener, Indiscreet (1958), etc...and much of new films ('80s and on) I don't care about!!...
MGM channel sometimes airs a few worthwhile westerns like Huston's Unforgiven...and Hallmark usually showed a little bit of classics, like Love Affair, Smash-Up....but no more!! And A&E, has good biographies, but nothing almost, of classics...mostly movies from the '70s and '80s, and on, and on.....
So the only commercial free channels here, show mostly new films (Cinemax, HBO, etc)...
So you can't imagine the "envy" (in the good sense of the word) I feel when I read & get your monthly schedules.... thank god I can always count on my sister in law, who keeps taping some stuff I ask her to -'cos I only visit the States once a year for three weeks or so-, like Male and Female, Sign of the Cross...)
Thank god I was raised in a British School all of my life...if I hadn't, I could not even have the chance of watching these films and stuff.
Well I just wanna say that Robert Osborne is a magnificent M.C.....and that I haven't had, yet, the opportunity of watching all of those tapes...so no, I haven't watched Ben and I cannot tell anything about him...
I must say I did like Pollack's introduction for "Bringing Up Baby". I'd like somebody like Peter Bogadnovich to host some movies...he's a fan of classics, am I wrong?? Also, as many other people have said, it'd be nice to have Esther Williams, Debbie Reynolds, etc..."introduce" their own films....and what about (totally wild here) getting Leonard Maltin for TCM???....Is he liked as a host there in the US?...I've read he has a program or sth like that (besided his work as author)...
Is David Shipman still alive or James Robert Parish...people like that, who you can tell LOVE classics, is the kind of people to host & introduce classic films.....
Finally i have to say, that I wrote a letter long ago to ask if we could get TCM here (we only get TNT), and I feel that, first: it would have to be subtitled or dubbed (yucks!!), 'cos here people speak spanish, and not all people have a good or decent level of english.... secondly: If in Australia, they change most of the programming, according to their policies and needs...I can imagine the picture of a TCM-Latin America subsidiary..."commercials and take out all pre-codes and silents!!!" I know my people!!! and their marketing policies!!!

Maybe Muscle can give us more info? He seems to know a lot!! He even met Harry Cohn?...Wow!!..Although in the 1950's Mayer was retired..Schary was the head of MGM then...
-
No!!! those were the names of Jimmy and Maggie in Shop around the corner....I'm all messed-up...all over again...
I saw this movie recently....didn't like it as much as the original or Garland's musical remake...Sakall was great there!!
NY152 and Shopgirl?

Imagine if it could be found a lost copy of Garbo's supposedly lost-to-date 1928 film, directed by Sj?str?m/Seastrom: "The Divine Woman".
BTW anyone seen Shearer's 1926 "The Devil Circus", directed by danish director Benjamin Christensen/Christiensen.???
I'd also love to see Shearer in Sj?str?m's "Tower of Lies"...Has it been aired here at TCM?
-
Wow!! Muscle does know a lot first-hand!!!, we're lucky to have such a guy here with us at the boards.
Muscle, hope you can share more stuff with us in the future, obviously I mean stuff you can share with us, not the confidential items you must, because of matter of trust and privacy, keep to yourself and not comment them here.
Again, thanks, 'cos with all you've said about Rita, I even don't know now if I'll buy that DVD "Rita"...Maybe I will just print your posts!! (chuckles)
-
I though of that one, but where are the two brothers??
-
At least I taped from TCM!!!
-
M.L. but edge said that "The Enchanted Cottage's" copy was poor...did he made a mistake a meant "Enchanted Forest"???....
-
Moviej...you take the words out of my mouth...of course "Talk of the Town" is a special film, with serious overtones...even a bit downbeat....but anyway very good.
I felt the same when I saw "Twentieth Century", great performances by both leads...but too-far-fetched...get your point...maybe forced-contrived?...don't know it's hailed as a masterpiece...but I couldn't connect on an emotional level with it..."Bringing Up Baby" and "....Godfrey" I could connect with them, very well indeed!!!...Nothing tops Kate and Cary with Baby Leopard, and I can't give you anything but LOVE BABY!!!
"Stage Door" is a GEM...i have a badly-dubbed in spanish- VHS edition...and it's a masterpiece..Kate, Ginger, Eve, Ann Miller, Andrea Leeds, Lucy Ball?, Gail Patrick, Menjou, Connie Collier....what a cast!!! Look forward for the dvd edition!!!...Gregory LaCava did such a fine job...have you seen Mervyn LeRoy's "Fools For Scandal" with Lombard and Fernand Gravet...another movie I liked was Hitchchock's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" with Lombard and Montgomery...and definitely have to watch "To Be Or Not To Be"....
Know sth?...couldn't "connect" with Lubitsch's "That Uncertain Feeling", sort of disappointed me...Maybe Merle Oberon's not suited for comedy...don't know...and Burgess Meredith's character was so annoying!!
Heard nothing of Rogers's "In Person"...
Any opinions?

I think that TCM showing DeMille's 1919 " Male and Female" was pretty a landmark event!!!indeed..

-

An another one to you Moira, you must be a very brave, maybe your irish blood must have sth. to do with it, 'cos I believe you're of irish descent?.
-
That's sad!....Although I have read constantly that McGuire did a wondeful job in it.
-
You know a lot Muscle!!..thanks for sharing that stuff here at the Boards.
-
I looked at it yesterday at Amazon, and it said that it was going to be released by Playboy?
The details of the edition were great! and that bonus film is welcomed....it must be a B western from the late 1930's...
-
They only answer for Bertucelli's "Why oh Why??" is: "THE GOLD RUSH", "THE KID", "SUNRISE", "EVANGELINE", "ROBIN HOOD", "LAUGH CLOWN LAUGH", "BROKEN BLOSSOMS", "ORPHANS OF THE STORM", "NOSFERATU", "METROPOLIS", "CABINET OF DR. GALIGARI", "CITY STREETS", "THE CROWD", "ETERNAL LOVE", "THE WEDDING MARCH", "THE MERRY WIDOW", "THE WIND", "LA BOHEME", "PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC".....ETC...ETC....ALL SUPREME TRIUMPHS OF ART!!!
And I hope that more silents are shown here, each and every monthy, and more early '30s Pre-Codes, etc.
-
I have this wonderful film taped long ago..and haven't been able to watch it....I'm yearning to do it!!!...Sad to hear that the quality of the copy is poor.
