Deanna Durbin is an utterly delightful comedienne, I recommend you to watch her in "It Started with Eve" and "First Love", two of the films I've seen her in which I've enjoyed the most.
-
I also saw "The Snake Pit" and it must have been a real eye-opener in those days, when the public was not used to pictures dealing with subjects like insanity and living conditions in mental institutions. Olivia de Havilland's performance is great, although I also admit that I enjoyed more "Suddenly Last Summer" with Kate, Monty Clift and Liz Taylor, but then, it's based upon a play written by Tennessee Williams, thus, much more "spicy". I saw "King's Solomon Mines" many years ago and I remember it as an amusing and colorful adventure film, but of its type I must admit that I liked more "The Naked Jungle". And I must add that it is not up to the standard of the other nominated features of that year, like "Sunset Boulevard", "All About Eve" (winner) or "Born Yesterday". Lastly, I saw "Three Smart Girls". It's a delicious comedy and made Deanna Durbin a star, but I think it was nominated for best picture principally due to its box-office success (it's not a lavish super production like "The Great Ziegfeld", which won that year's Oscar for best picture), and again, IMO, it's not in the same class of other nominated films of that year like "Dodsworth" (which I think should have won), "A Tale of Two Cities", "The Story of Louis Pasteur" or "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town". I think that the brilliant comedy "My Man Godfrey", released the same year of "TMG" and also by Universal, had more merits to be nominated in the Best Picture category.

I am going to guess Ward Bond.

It seems that one more time I've misunderstood a question. I thought about the star of the film, not exactly of a "title character", sorry. Message was edited by: feaito

One could be "The Moon and Sixpence"? Not 100% sure. Another "Lady in the Lake"? Not 100% sure either. Message was edited by: feaito

Just a random guess: in "Juarez"?

Difficult to choose only one, but I'd say "Love Me Tonight" with Chevalier and MacDonald. Message was edited by: feaito

Thanks for your recommendation Phil. I like swashbucklers! Have you seen the English film "Bonnie Prince Charlie" starring David Niven or "The Corsican Brothers" starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr.? Those are good too and not as well known as "Captain Blood", "The Sea Hawk", "The Black Swan" or "The Prisoner of Zenda".

It would be just great! I bet that the "Complicated Women" Documentary will be included in one of the discs to be released as part of Warner's "Forbidden Hollywood"- Pre-Code Collection, to be released this year (Reportedly to include "Baby Face" (1933) and "Waterloo Bridge" (1931), among others).

And the name of the actress is Pauline Collins.

A random guess: Judy Holliday?

Can you help me identify this photo, please?

The actor does not look like William Haines, he looks like Lew Ayes, but I'm not sure. The girl looks like Frances Dee, but she was a Paramount contract star at the beginning of her career, so why being coached at MGM? There are two ladies who know a lot about Frances Dee, Susan and Deborah, you can check in the "Your Favorites" Folder the "Frances Dee Fan" thread. In fact Susan has a website dedicated to Ms. Dee: http://members.tripod.com/lovelymissdee/ Also, when I needed help with the identification of a couple of Stills I was helped at www.goldensilents.com, you can try there too! Good Luck! -
Welcome Scarlett, Glad to have helped.

Ralph, I am very fond of redhead actresses like Maureen and Eleanor too! They look glorious in Technicolor!

And what about Marion Marshall which was John Wayne's real name or Carmen Orrico which was John Saxon's?

I own the "Bob Hope Tribute Collection" which includes the four Road pictures metioned below (Morocco, Zanzibar, Utopia and Singapore), but in individual discs, each in its Keepcase, each with extras. It's a much pricier set (US$ 35.99 at Amazon), so I think the best option is the "On the Road with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby Collection" (at US$ 13.99 at Amazon). The first set was released in 2002 and the latter in 2004. I don't have to say that I got the pricier set before the cheaper was released.
