  1. I'm not very good at technicisms; I get confused with all the DVR, DVD-R et al. Anyone who's knowledgeable about this subject: Would a machine of this sort be a good choice?: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4139_22912926,00.html
  2. BTW, I saw many years ago "Cinema Paradiso" which I loved and I noticed at Blockbuster that it is available for renting the Director's Cut Version, which is one hour or more longer. Does anyone know if it's any better than the original version? Thanks for the feedback.
  3. Recently I saw two excellent Foreign Films: the Epic, poetic and tragic "Kagemusha" and the Very Unique "The Russian Ark", a one-of-a-kind experience, filmed in one take inside L'Hermitage, the Imperial Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. Ah! I also watched "Nicholas and Alexandra"; excellent! I tried to watch "Ludwig II", but since the DVD is a German Release you can choose only between German and Italian (Spoken Languages/ Subtitles) and I do not speak those Languages, although Italian is easier to understand for me, being a Native Spanish Speaker. I rented "Les Enfants Du Paradis" (Children of Paradise), which I Plan to watch soon!
  4. Just a wild guess, they all played doctors; Charles Boyer in "Private Worlds", Melvyn Douglas in "Ghost Story" and Lew Ayres impersonated them many, many times
  5. Great Thread Coffeedan!!! I remember reading also that Hedy Lamarr's first name rhymes with "Lady" When I was a kid and being a native Spanish speaker, I was startled when I read about the correct pronunciation of certain Irish/Scottish names of actors like Sean (Shawn?) Connery or Siobhan (Shivaun?) McKenna... I love this topic!! I also love the way the English pronounce Leicester (Ls'ter?) and Gloucester (Gl'ster?)
  6. Thanks for the further feedback Sandy. Great to see you posting too!!!
  7. Thanks for the clarification Ayres, it must be what you say
  8. Sorry to intrude here but I wonder about the connection of Hattie McDaniel with the film "Imitation of Life" (1934); wasn't Louise Beavers who impersonated dear Delilah?
  9. I saw Roz in "Tell it to the Judge" the other day, an amiable comedy in which she acted opposite Robert Cummings. I also watched "The Guilt of Janet Ames", a strange, psychological drama in which she stars opposite Melvyn Douglas, I cannot say I really liked it, but it's definitely worth a watch. Roz gives a good dramatic performance, but I'd rather watch her in comedy. I forgot, I also saw her in a small part in "Forsaking All Others" and she's great fun too as a socialite.
  10. Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard in the haunting "Brief Encounter"
  11. I just read it too Mongo, sad news. May she rest in peace.
  12. As far as I remember Iron Man stars Lew Ayres, not Robert Montgomery.
  13. They all starred in different versions of "The Desert Song" as the Red Shadow
  14. Such is life, Alix....I'm glad you taped all those goodies!!!
  15. It must be "In the Good Old Summertime" with Judy and Van Johnson, which is a musical remake of "The Shop Around the Corner". The same plot was used as the basis for "You've Got Mail".
  16. Welcome! I agree with you, movies filmed in widescreen (vistavision/cinemascope/cinerama et al) must be viewed in that way, not in Full Screem or Pan Scan, because if not, too much is lost on the screen. Still, there are some viewers who do not like widescreen. Letterbox means that a film will be aired in its original widescreen aspect-ratio (there is a variety of widescreen ratios). If you check "The Red Shoes" at www.us.imdb.com and you click on "Technical Specs" you'll confirm that it was filmed on the 1:37:1 ratio, which almost perfectly fits a 4:3 TV screen.
  17. Miss Oliver played so many interesting characters that could fit this quote (in A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, Pride and Prejudice, her films as Hildegarde Withers, etc.) but I'll guess "Drums Along the Mohawk".
