Thank You, lady eve. *Anthony Adverse* is correct. I've always loved this one. Claude Rains and Gale Sondergaard as the evil pair were great. G.Sondergaard won the first Oscar given for best support actress for this film. Olivia deHavilland was so young and beautiful in this one. Edmund Gwenn was great as the grandfather. The only one that was metsa, metsa was Fredric March.
Thanks visualfeast and ladyeve. Your turn, eve, if you want it. BTW, Anthony Adverse will air 6/20 on TCM.

Thank you, visual. Knew I could count on you. Not DC
The subplot here involving the first evil husband and the evil housekeeper to the grandfather is important. They are after the grandfather's fortune that belongs to the boy.In fact the actress portraying the role made movie history with this part.

The film takes place in the late 1770's. It was based on a best selling novel that was over 1200 pages. Film was made in the 1930's.
The merchant that the boy is given to, to raise, is really his grandfather. The cruel husband had told him originally that his daughter and her baby had died in childbirth. But the grandfather recognizes his daughter's traits in the 10 year old boy.

Berlin, Irving- songwriter, lyricist, composer, genius- I think he hasn't been mentioned yet- what would American musical film history be without Irving Berlin?
-
More than 15 views so far and no bites- guess it's time for another clue.
The boy is raised in the convent till he's 10, then broght to a local merchant to be his apprentice.
This is a costume epic. Did I forget to mention that his mother had an affair with another man- husband finds out and kills her lover then she dies in childbirth? The husband was older and a cruel man.
