  1. I knew you'd get this one quickly. Yes Dinah and George Montgomery. Dinah Shore  was such a lovely woman. I loved her talk show and I have a couple of her cookbooks. I've used some of her recipes and they were delicious. Good work Princess, your thread.

  2. Thanks Miles. Just thinking about that creep Frank Fay gives me the willies.

    next

She was a singer and actress. A lovely personality and winner of many Emmy awards.

He was an actor, director, artist, writer  He was in many film westerns, a few musicals especially one that some TCM'ers know and love, dramas, comedies. He starred in a tv western. He wasn't as well known as his wife.

Couple, her films and tv shows and his films and his Western Tv show he starred in ????????

  3. Thanks Princess. No, I don't remember the show. 87th Precinct, it was probably on a school night and too late for me  to watch it or another show was on at that time. I just thought of Three's Company and The Ropers and then I saw that Ocean's 11 will be on TCM so I thought of Norman Fell, since I've seen the movie dozens of times Very good question btw :) I'll post one later, in the meantime the Thread Is Open if anyone wants to post a question.

This guy was a solid supporting actor in films starring Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, Steve McQueen and even Dustin Hoffman.

But his claim to fame became television. He co-starred in one of the most popular 70s sitcom.

But before all that hoopla, he co-starred in an early 60s cop show with a cool theme, loosely-based on the work of a popular crime fiction writer.

Hint: In the '70s he also starred in a spin-off from his original sitcom hit.

When you identify this actor, be sure to give us the names of the 60s retro series, the crime fiction writer whose work it was based on and one of his classic movies.

(For those who want the extra credit brownie points, you can mention that popular '70s sitcom.)

Norman Fell?  The Police Show was 87th Precint. It was based on a series of novels by Ed McBain ( Evan Hunter was his pen name). His 1970's comedy tv show was Three's Company with a spin-off of The Ropers. He was in Ocean's 11 with Frank, Pork Chop Hill with Gregory Peck, Bullitt with Steve McQueen and The Graduate with Dustin Hoffman ????????

  5. Since my favorite films Elsa was in have been mentioned, I'll add a charming, small role she had in The Razor's Edge. Elsa sings a song to herself in the film. It's lovely, she gives Tyrone an invitation for dying Clifton Webb. Another sweet role I don't think anyone's mentioned was in The Bishop's Wife.

Elsa was always a joy to watch no matter the role.Wonderful actress.

  6. The 2 actresses were different types physically. The one who played the role was a brunette with dark eyes and the one who was first offered the role in the Hitchcock film but couldn't accept the role was blonde and blue eyed.

  7. Correct Miles. Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows. Steve was also a musican and a composer. Did you know that he wrote the song This Could Be the Start of Something Big and Pretend You Don't See Her and many more. He really was a powerhouse of talent.A few years ago, actually more than that, I watched The Benny Goodman Story starring Steve and Donna Reed. TCM shows the film so rarely, too bad, I enjoyed the film. Good work Miles, I figured this one would go down quickly. Your thread :)

LOL-  you are such a meanie. I love the Lassie movies and Roddy was so sweet and touching in Lassie Come Home. I always get teary eyed everytime I see this film and I've seen it many times. How Green Was My Valley,The White Cliffs of Dover,   My Friend Flicka, Son of Fury, Story of Benjamin Blake,Keys to the Kingdom. All great films and he was such a great child actor in all of them.

  9. Thanks, Fausterlitz

He did it all. Radio, TV,, actor, composer, producer, writer. She was not born in the USA. Her family did move to the USA, she was in her young teens. She was an actress and writer. She was mostly a support actress in films. She appeared in some films with Robert Mitchum, Anne Baxter, Myrna Loy, She's probably known more for all her tv appearances. It was a 2nd marriage for both, and even though one was a Republican, the other a Democrat, their happy marriage lasted over 45 years.

Couple, some film titles and tv shows ???????

  10. An important supporting role in one of Hitchcock's films was first offered to a different actress than the one who did play the role. The actress offered the role couldn't do the role since she had the lead role in a tv series at the same time. Film, actress who did the role and the actress who didn't ???

  11.  Laurence Harvey and Margaret Leighton. His line from The Manchurian Candidate about his mother ( Angela Lansbury). Margaret Leighton was once married to Michael Wilding who was married to Elizabeth Taylor who spoke that spinning wheel line in Giant. Unfortunately both Laurence Harvey and Margaret Leighton died much, much too young, sad.

Seems you've never figured out that the whole 'Broadway Melody' number was just another satirical take on the Hollywood musicals that would soon come about after the advent of sound movies, eh? AND, with even a little nod to the gangster genre which would soon also become quite popular with the public.

Sure, its also done in more a balletic fashion and as is the closing number in An American in Paris, and is a lot less tongue-in-cheek performed than is the earlier "Beautiful Girl" number, but there's just something about the way Kelly shouts out "GOTTA Dance" and then lively dances around during this sequence that grabs my attention every time I watch it, AND in the way the final shot is of the camera slowly closing in on that famous smile of his.

AND, I've never gotten the idea at all that its inclusion was any sort of "vanity" number for Kelly, either. Nope, fits right into the whole narrative and flow of the film for me.

(...know what I mean now, jelly bean?)

Right on Dargo, Couldn't agree more. I love The Gotta Dance routine in Singin In the Rain, it's a favorite of mine in all musicals and yes, you got that right, it fits perfectly in the story of Hollywood's musicals and the gangster element. Besides, WOW, to Cyd Charisse, that dance that she does with Gene with her long legs in the green dress has to be one of the sexiest dance numbers in all film musicals and that's part of the Gotta Dance, Broadway Melody routine. Gene has no ego or vanity  in that routine, Cyd is the star of that routine and he steps aside to let her be the star in that routine.

  13. 1.  Martin Balsam in Psycho - he's stabbed and then falls down the stairs

    2.  Edmund Gwenn in Foreign Correspondant- falls from the top of the building

    3.  Martin Landau in North By Northwest - falls off of Mt Rushmore

    4.  Norman Lloyd in Saboteur - falls off of the Statue of Liberty

    5.  Kim Novak in Vertigo - falls from the Bell Tower

Now, you wrote not to be too specific, so I'm not going into detail as to why they all fall, anyone who's seen these films obviously knows all this, if not it's a spoiler. Didn't appreciate the unnecessary snarky comment "althought the Hitch element is a given in this thread"

  14. Correcr Fausterlitz, Rope is the film and that red neon sign showing Hitchcock's silhouette and the word Reduco was his cameo this time. It was a clever way for Hitch to have a cameo and to continue his Reduco joke. Good work your thread.

  15. Thanks Miles

    next

Hitch continued that cameo joke in another film a few years later. Although some say there were 2 cameo appearances by Hitchcock in this film,  according to Warner Bros. archives this was the only one. Film and describe the cameo appearance in the film ??

Florence Henderson had tv shows with her name?  I didn't know that. I was on the wrong track..thought maybe Vicki Lawrence because she did, was on lots of game shows, made records...but couldn't come up with any 'firsts'.  Oh well...

The Florence Henderson Show 2007-2009, it was a talk show also Who's Cooking With Florence in 2013. Many celebrites were guests on these shows. I use to watch  both shows. As long as the question is in the Retro time period up to 1979, clues can be given for the question after that. adding that in case anyone was wondering.  As far as a first goes, that was quite an honor that Johnny picked Florence as his first female guest host while he was away on vacation. Florence's career lasted over 60 years and she worked up until she passed. She was also a contestant on Dancing With The Stars when she was 76 years old. 2 months before she passed, she also taped a Dancing With the Stars when Maureen Mccormick was a contestant. For Baby Boomers, Florence Henderson was a part of our past. I doubt very many no matter what generation, doesn't know Florence's iconic character Carol Brady and the Brady Bunch. At any rate, glad there were good guesses by everyone :) Miles is the winner, putting all the clues together with his correct guess and it's his thread

My research tells me that it's Florence Henderson.  She was the first woman to host "The Tonight Show".  Her well known show was "The Brady Bunch".  She was a one time hostess of "The Today Show".  She was a guest on countless game shows, and she did commercials for Wesson Oil, Polydent, and Oldsmobile.

Yes, Florence Henderson is correct Miles. She was the first female to guest host for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. She loved game shows and appeared on them for many years, Hollywood Squares, Password, Match Game, What's My Line, etc. She did commercials for Oldsmobile, her most famous though were the  Wesson Oil commercials, she did those for 22 years, ( remember she sang Wessonality) later she did do the Polident commercials. She started out as a stage singer and actress. She starred in the film Song of Norway. Of course, her most famous role was as Carol Brady on the Brady Bunch, 1969-1974. She even made an appearance as the Brady grandma in the Brady Bunch movie. Excellent Miles, your thread :)

I  believe  the  answer  is   Ann  Sothern.  Thanks

Sorry, but it's not Ann Sothern.  Ann does not fit all of the clues

This actress was known more for her tv career than film career.

Could this be David Lean (Great Expectations, A Passage to India) and Ann Todd (The Seventh Veil, Madeleine) ? (It could also be David Lean and Kay Walsh, but Todd seems to have done more American television, as befits the clue.

Yes, David Lean and Ann Todd and yes that's why I phrased the Ann clue that way. Excellent and quick Swithin. Ann also played Gregory Peck's wife in Hitchcock's The Paradine Case and of course David Lean's  Oscar wins for directing Lawrence of Arabia and the Bridge on The River Kwai. Great Expectations is my favorite and I like Madeleine. Good work Swithin, your thread :)
