  1. Yes, and she was so resentful about giving up her singing career to raise the children. Talk about a guilt trip to give the kids. Thanks for the correction, she dressed them as twins. Best not to be on the phone while watching a documentary.

    watching part 2,hopefully without interruption

  2. Hemingway's mother was quite a piece of work. I left off when his mom would dress the twins first as boys then as girls! btw, I got the Hemingway questions right last night, I'm sure you did too,. Oh, Jeopardy is on now.

So, anyone here besides me catch part-1 of Ken Burns' Ernest Hemingway doc last night on PBS?

It held my attention and interest pretty darn well, anyway.

(...and even though it never featured some kid flying off into the air on his bicycle and silhouetted against a full moon!)  LOL

I watched some of it. It was on after Jeopardy last night It was mentioned in a question last night on Jeopardy and then the bio showed up right after on PBS! Unfortunately I got a phone call so watching was interrupted, I will watch it when it's on again.

Charles Vidor and Evelyn Keyes. He was born in Hungary. She was in Gone With the Wind, a very famous film. He directed Gilda. He had problems with Harry Cohn at Colombia.

Yes, Charles Vidor and Evelyn Keyes. He also directed Love Me Or Leave Me and Hans Christian Anderson. Evelyn was also in The Prowler and The Jolson Story and 99 River Street. All excellent films. Good work Swithin, your thread

  5. Thanks Miles, Hope you had a lovely Easter.

    next

He was a director, writer and producer. He was not born in the USA. Some of the films he directed starred Rock Hudson, James Cagney and Glenn Ford. He had a falling out with the head of a studio and sued although he had worked there for many years. He married this wife after she appeared in one of his films.

She appeared in a very famous Oscar winning film, not directed by this husband. She appeared in 3 films directed by this husband, She had pin-up status during WW2. Some of the actors she appeared with in films were, Boris Karloff, Van Heflin and Glenn Ford.

Both husband and wife were married 4 different times. Couple and some of the films he directed and films she appreared in ??????

He asked for Southern Gothic Noir. There's more, Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967), The Drowning Pool (1975), Body Heat (1981), Tightrope (1984), Angel Heart (1987), Wild At Heart (1990), China Moon (1994), Cold Around The Heart (1997), Palmetto (1998), The Badge (2002), The Notorious Bettie Page (2005). They're probably a few more that I haven't seen or have forgotten. Add  A Face In The Crowd

Maybe add Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte  ?

If you completely read number two, you won't come to the conclusion that it could be either singer.

This is what you wrote. You should have written please pick one. You wrote it wasn't either singer but then wrote to Miles it was Perry Como and that was one of my guesses. Sorry Princess but I'm calling you out on this one., your response to me was misleading and incorrect. However, I thank you for the well wishes.

    2. Could be Perry Como or Andy Williams, both were easy, relaxed performers who had tv shows

I may not be on site today, this is all I have time for right now

Princess, I answered Perry Como and you said it was incorrect?!!!!

2)"Before becoming a big hit on TV."--You failed to read that part of the sentence.

Why this response to me? then you wrote that Perry Como was correct to Miles !!!

Off topic: I knew Perkins and Berenson a bit (and still tear up when I think of their tragic endings.) Berry was, in particular, one of the kindest people you could meet.

I'm only responding to this comment and don't want to derail the thread, I'm just agreeing with this statement. Yes a very sad and tragic  ending for both Anthony Perkins and Berry Berenson and yes, Berry Berenson was lovely, Many decades ago I met both Berry and Marisa at work, both were charming.

  10. Princess, I had surgery yesterday and I'm not in the mood. Someone else can deal with your question. I understand, you want someone who became a hit because of the tv show even though they were in movies before the tv show.

Princess both Perry Como and Andy Williams appeared in "classic films", if you mean famous classic films that's one thing but if you're referring to a time period then both Andy and Perry appeared in films in the 1940's and besides those '40's films.Andy appeared in the1964 film I'd Rather Be Rich. I can't think of 2 more relaxed singers than those 2 other than Bing Crosby he did have a tv show, that's if you are definig classic as famous movies?????

  12. Stanley Kubrick and Ruth Sobotka ?? He was a Bronx boy, she was Austrian.

She had a role in Kubrick's Killer's Kiss and was art director on The Killing. she was a dancer, costumer designer, art director, painter and actress.

OK, that helps. Sterling Hayden and Madeleine Carroll. She was in The 39 Steps. She met Hayden when they made Virginia.

I knew that last obvious clue would do it. Yes, Sterling Hayden and Madeleine Carroll. The 4 films that were selected by the National Registry that Sterling Hayden had roles in are The Asphalt Jungle, Johnny Guitar,Dr. Strangelove or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love the Bomb, and of course The Godfather. With Jane Wyman the film was So Big, with Sinatra the film was Suddenly, with Bette it was The Star and with Brando The Godfather.

By 1938, Madeleine Carroll was the highest paid actress in the world.

    Swithin, it's your thread :)

Princess, sorry that we didn't recognize the film. It's a film I've always wanted to see, so thanks for thinking of the film. Don't know if TCM has ever shown this one I wish they would and I'll be looking out for it.
