Growing up I loved Dorothy Kilgallen on "What's My Line"

But unfortunately, we don't play this game like "What's My Line".

You're not allowed to ask specific questions or to confer with others who may also be trying to answer this question.

But I will refer you back to exactly what I said in the original question.

And I will also reiterate what Lav told you before--

Look back as to how this game is played and carefully review the entire criteria of the question before you try to answer it.

And as you make guesses, I will try to supply more specific hints.

Hint#2--The husband ended his career as the head of television production for one of the golden era studios during the classic TV era.

Of course, he produced westerns, but he also produced a series adapted for TV from a legendary post World War II British film noir, noted for its unique music score.

Irving Asher and Laura La Plante??

Laura La Plante was Magnolia in the mostly silent version of Show Boat and she was in Arizona with John Wayne.

Irving Asher is credited with discovering Errol Flynn. He produced Elephant Walk with Elizabeth Taylor, Here Comes the Groom with Bing and Jane Wyman, Ten Days In Paris with Rex Harrison. He was nominated for an Oscar for a  film I love Blossums In The Dust starring Greer Garson. Another I like a lot is The War Against Mrs. Hadley, another film is The Four Feathers

The Third Man was a great tv show he produced. He was head of 20th Century Fox Television. ??????????????????????

  3. Yes glad you learned a few things while doing a little research and that's one of the reasons the games are interesting not just for fun but to learn interesting trivia about the famous people involved in entertainment. One of the most interesting fact about Carol Grace, Walter Matthau's  wife was that Truman Capote said that he based his novella's character of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's on Carol Grace. Carol Grace's first husband was William Saroyan the writer. She said that he was abusive towards her. He divorced her and then pleaded with her to remarry him, they did but she divorced him a year later. Walter and Carol were in the Broadway play Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? To answer your question, Walter Matthau is mostly thought of a comedic actor although I read he didn't care for that label. He was an excellent actor and capable in any genre.

  4. This may not be the trivia thread for you. If it's not challenging then it's boring. I think you might enjoy some of the other trivia threads that are easier. It's your turn to post one or pass the thread to someone else. If you decide to play this and some of the threads that are more challenging, then you should go thru the thread and read what past typical questions that are posted are like.

It's not Fonda, this actor appeared in a film with  Henry Fonda.

The husband won more than 1 Tony and a Best Supporting Oscar

Please go to the page before to see the other clues and the question

    Repeating all the clues

He was an Oscar and Tony Award winning actor. He's appeared in  westerns, dramas, musicals  and comedies although when we think of him we usually think of one type of genre. Some of the actors he appeared in films with  were Cary Grant, Debbie Reynolds, Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas.

She was an actress and writer. She did not have a lot of film credits. She met her husband when they were appearing together in a Broadway play. It's been said that a character in a very famous book that was made into a hit film was based on her.

Couple, films, Broadway show they were in together and what was that famous book whose main character was based on this wife ???????

  7. Thanks. LOL not sure what I was thinking when I wrote Arthur instead of Herbert. I know that Gaslight is the remake of Cavalcade, and I did mention Cavalcade since that's the role she was nominated for I was just giving another familiar name of a film that Diana Wynyard was in, An Ideal Husband. I believe she had the role in Cavalcade that Ingrid Bergman remade in Gaslight. Thanks for the Oliver Reed clue, that's what clinched it.

He directed several famous films, winning an Oscar for one of them. She was nominated for an Oscar.  His nephew was a well known actor.  The nephew's name offers a clue to the director's Oscar-winning film.

Carol Reed his wife was Diana Wynyard and his father was Sir Arthur Beerbohm Tree and Carol Reed's nephew was Oliver Reed. Carol Reed's Oscar winning film was Oliver and of course he also  directed The Third Man,  Fallen Idol, Odd Man Out. Diana Wynyard was in Cavalcade and An Ideal Husband ( TCM does show this one) ????????????

  9. #3. Patricia Breslin - don't know what clip that is but she was Mandy on The People's Choice ( use to watch the show in re-runs when I was a little girl)

#5. Olive Deering ? I think I remember she was a waitress in an Alfred Hitchcock Presents

#7. Carmen Mathews - I think she was Lizzie Borden in an Alfred Hitchcock Presents

#9. Philip Coolridge - don't know what tv show although we've seen him lots of times, but I recognize him from The Tingler

  10. Exactly. We are first introducted to Johhny ( Cary) on the train with the train going into a tunnel in Suspicion. That was his first Hitch film. His last film with Hitch ends with Cary on the train in North By Northwest again with the train going into a tunnel. I find it interesting that Cary's first and last film with Hitchcock begins and ends in the same setting. The question I posed was about the beginning of his first Hitch film and the last Hitch film,
Cary and Eva meeting on the train in the middle is irrelevant. Yes, his pet name for Joan Fontaine's character was "monkey face". in Susicion. The date of 18 years apart for the 2 films and the pet nickname were the giveaway clues. Glad you recognized that Miles. It's interesting that Hitchcock made that sexual innuendo of the train in the 2 films starring Cary Grant and how those were Cary's first and last films for Hitchcock.

Glad you picked up on the clues Miles, great thinking, your thread

  11. Carole Landis committed suicide and it's been said that she did it over Rex ending their affair. That's pretty well known. Rex's nickname was Sexy Rexy, he was known for fooling around. Kay Kendall was a beautiful actress who sadly died when she was only 33. She was adorable in Les Girls. Rex was married many times, mostly to actresses, beautiful Lili Palmer  was another, Interesting story between Lili and Rex and their marriage and Kay Kendall.

    Your thread Swithin
