If I remember right one of the Chandler novels or short stories features an ice pick killer too. At one point in time an ice pick was a common household kitchen utensil after all.
An ice pick in 1992 a common household item as in Basic instinct? OK. You guys ( other than MissW) have missed the points I made. It wasn't just about the ice pick, so many other similiarities are there that are being overlooked but if that's all you got to prove your point, so be it. As far as I'm concerned it's a weak argument only focusing on the ice pick and the stubborness here makes a disagreement futile.

How sad. I liked Kevin Dobson very much on Kojak and especially Knots Landing. Knots was a very favorite show for me, it was on for 14 years and I've seen every episode. Kevin and Michelle were a great couple and their relationship turned into the anchor for the show. Thanks for all those years of great tv watching Kevin.
RIP Kevin Dobson

We're all entitled to believe and see what we want. Personally, I don't care. We'll never know for sure whether one film influenced the other. I believe that Night Editor had some influence on Basic Instinct and as much as you want to argue the point, in the long run it doesn't matter. I might suggest you actually see both films not just read summaries. You focus on the ice pick in your statement, there are other similiar plot points you are not addressing that I mentioned., In any case, I have no problem with you believing what you believe, please respect my opinion and let's leave it at that.

Well, I disagree. I see it and so does Miss W. I had already written that Sharon's character was an updated, modern day woman. I never wrote they were exact copies of each ,other,I'm saying that one was most likely inspired by the other . Both women are psychotic, both have an ice pick and both are voyeurs and both are overly sex-ual. You commented some posts ago that she deeply kissed her husband in front of Gargan. That's just as Sharon's character, flaunting Dorothy Malone's character in front of Michael and both male leads are portraying cops . btw, you write Sharon isn't the killer, except the story ends with the shot of the ice pick under the bed while they are in bed together, and we are lead to believe Michael is going to get it. Never said the stories are exactly the same, for me it's more than coincidence that their basic characters are so similiar. It's fine that you don't see " necessary" connections, Maybe rewatch Basic Instinct, I do see those connections.

Of course the audience saw a bit more of Sharon Stone than they did of Janis Carter. I'm not sure that the
screenwriter or director of Basic Instinct were influenced by Night Editor. The ice pick may just have
been organic to the whole plot of Basic Instinct. While there are superficial similarities, I don't know
it there was any actual connection between Night Editor and Basic Instinct, especially there being a
more than forty year gap between the two movies.
If the screenwriter saw Night Editor, and I have have no doubt he did, it wasn't just the ice pick. Again, 2 beautiful, rich, psychopathic blondes who were overly se-x-ual and are voyeurs and get involved with cops. Remember Garagan and Douglas are both cops obsessed with these women .That's more than superficial. Sharon's character also gets bored easily and is always looking for thrills, just like Janis' character.

Tom quoted me before I put in that last part about the ice pick. Glad you agree Miss W, finally someone else sees what I see

It wasn't Jill's story, wouldn't make much sense to follow her story. Jill didn't know why she did the things she did. She apologizes everytime after she does something awful. She immediately apologizes to Garagan after stabbing him. I think she says she doesn't know why she did it. She was nuts., I do agree that she was looking for the next thrill.
LOL I told you guys, the follow up to Jill is she becomes Sharon Stone's character in Basic Instinct LOL A murderous, bi-sexual voyeur with a fascination for ice picks LOL

Cybill (1995-98) used Gershwin's " Nice Work if You Can Get It" sung by Cybill Shepherd. The song was featured in " An American in Paris"
That's a great answer Peebs, however in this RETRO thread the OP specifically wanted questions and answers to be pre-1980. If you go to the first page of the thread or any thread, you'll see the initial post by the OP giving the "rules" to their question. Clues can mention facts after 1980 but the question and answer must be pre 1980 . At any rate, love the show Cybil and I think she does a great job with the song and thanks for thinking of the song.

I've seen maybe once or twice Basic Instinct and didn't remember that, oh well, maybe I'll have to ath it again, lol.
i've also only seen Basic Instinct once. It's a disturbing film.. and Night Editor reminded me of it. A lot of similiarities.

Yeah. Man, I've had a backache for years. Just won't seem to clear up.
I also got a kick out of Carter giving her cuckolded hubby a very deep kiss while Gargan looks on, boiling mad.
What a crazy dame.
Yeah, and again there's that voyeurism. Sharon does the same thing in Basic Instinct to Michael only this time with Dorothy Malone.

2 beautiful, overly sexual, rich blondes that are voyeurs and use an ice pick. Both Michael Douglas and William Gargan are cops in the films. There's definitely a connection between the 2 films. Basic Instinct was influenced by Night Editor as far as I'm concerned.

SPOILER ALERT
I'm surprised no one commented on my comment about the connection between Night Editor and Basic Instinct. Janis stabs Gargan with the ice pick as they are holding each other and kissing. In Basic Instinct, Sharon and Michael in bed together and we see the ice pick so we know what's coming. Both involve intimacy and that ice pick. Both Janis and Sharon are nuts and voyeurs. I think Night Editor may have had some influence on Basic Instinct.

LOL Miles. I was thinking of other tv shows and all were earlier than Mash, the Odd Couple, Happy Days. You did answer the question, so the thread is yours. I may re-post this question at some point. In the meantime, good work, your thread.

I'd like to try one. In the Elvis concert film That's the Way It Is (1970) what classic movie actor was shown in the audience before the show and backstage after the concert speaking with Elvis? This major actor had retired by then with his last movie in 1966.
Cary Grant

James Brown was so great. Best act last night. Loved seeing Leslie Gore . Could have done without the Barbarians, that was a waste. It was fun watching. The Beach Boys and The Supremes and Smokey and The Stones., Brought me back to when I was a young teen and they were all so young.

LOL, you guys are very funny. Voyeurs, flaunting other lovers in front of the current lover. cops as the femme fatale's lovers, an ice pick that's used in an attempted murder while being held in an intimate way and the other femme fatale about to use that ice pick while being intimate with her lover and both those gals never being satisfied so they have to look for the next thril. Please let us know if you can think of some noir titles that have all of those same plot points.
I find it incredible that you can't imagine that a screenwriter and a film director watched a noir even one that isn't well known. Of course it's possible they thought this one up without any other film influencing them,, I introduced the possibly that one was influenced by the othe rbut you guys are hell bent on nixing that idea, hey, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
