Heaven's Gate (the movie, not the cult)
sewhite2000 replied to dustinblythe's topic in General Discussions
I would say Heaven's Gate didn't kill that kind of movie overnight. Over the next ten years, you had Out of Africa, Amadaeus, Dances with Wolves and The Last Emperor. But yeah, it was probably the beginning of the end. This will probably be at least my third time on these boards to tell this story, but hopefully enough time has elapsed that nobody remembers it. I was once at a little social gathering where a small crowd of people, none of whom I knew very well or at all, were all sneering at HG, and I offered, "Oh, I don't know. It actually has a lot of strong points," which caused utter befuddlement among the others. It emerged over the next few minutes that I was the only person in the conversation who'd actually SEEN them movie! Its reputation had preceded it. -
And his songs have been tied into movie soundtracks as well, Wild at Heart and Eyes Wide Shut, so he was an appropriate choice.

New Additions to Film Registry Announced

Didn't know that about Jacks. Wish TCM would show it! -
https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/jurassic-park-shining-added-to-national-film-registry/2018/12/12/a7b54874-fde4-11e8-a17e-162b712e8fc2_story.html?utm_term=.87d2455796da Now we can start playing the guessing game of what's going to air! I would say the most likely are: Bad Day at Black Rock On the Town Rebecca The Informer Days of Wine and Roses The Lady from Shanghai The Fox films Pickup on South Street, Broadcast News and Leave Her to Heaven seem less likely, but they've all aired on TCM before. TCM would have to have advance knowledge of the honorees, I assume, to schedule anything outside of their library. Maybe they do get the info in advance? Would love for them to show the Paramount film One-Eyed Jacks, but it's never aired on TCM and is extremely unlikely. The Shining, like all Kubrick post-1970, is Warner Bros. and might air, but it would have to be after midnight, I assume.

It was blank on the schedule months ago and still blank as I look it up just now. Anyone have any ideas what's going to air?

There was probably an age difference that was going to strain credulity no matter who was cast in the female lead. May-December romances are all over the place in the movies of those days, but Astaire and Powell were supposed to brother and sister, and he was 30 years older than her! Those are some parents that waited a while between children! He was close to 25 years older than Judy, too. Although audiences seemed to mostly ignore these things back then.

Mankiewicz Tactful in His Landis Career Overview
sewhite2000 replied to sewhite2000's topic in General Discussions
I think these intro/outro segments are typically shot several months in advance, so of course Landis would have no way of knowing what promo would be airing right before his appearance. But that is certainly an ironic lead-in! Could someone at TCM actually have enough of a twisted sense of humor to intentionally do that? -
I don't trust tcm.com at all for what's a premiere and what's not. On multiple occasions, I've seen this website tout as a premiere something that has actually aired before. I trust much more the records of moviecollectoroh. I assume this is the "resident record keeper" to whom you refer? Your post sent me over to look at his site, where he indeed lists the one and only airing of The Holly & the Ivy as happening this month. But he acknowledges his records prior to 2001 are incomplete, so perhaps it did have a long-ago airing. Don't know if you've been watching that long (2001 was the first year I ever watched TCM), or if you think you saw it more recently. Given that there certainly aren't a plethora of other channels where it might have aired, I'm not inclined to argue with you.

When making a roughly chronological listing of John Landis' "greatest hits", I noticed Ben made a point of skipping Twilight Zone: the Movie! Earlier this year, I attended a 40th anniversary screening of Animal House which was attended by Landis and Bruce McGill. Why they held this in my city, which had absolutely nothing to do with the making of the movie, I have no idea. But I went. It was hinted "cast members" might attend, and I must admit, I was hoping for a little more star wattage. Donald Sutherland and Kevin Bacon (and maybe even Tim Matheson) were probably wishing for the stars, but what are Tom Hulce and Karen Allen doing these days that are so important? Anyway, I got to see Landis speak briefly outside the theater and again before the screening. There was to be a Q&A one theater over after the movie. Apparently everyone in attendance but my friend and I understood that it was going to begin literally like five seconds after the movie was over, so starting a good 30 minutes before the end of the film, a mass exodus began to the adjacent theater. We were puzzled but kept on watching the movie, which we thought was the reason everyone had come. When we went over to the other theater after the closing credits ended, the Q&A had already been going for 10 minutes, and it was SRO, so we just went home.

Had Kevin Hart Hosted the Oscars Before?

Wow. Well, he's easily one of the most successful and bankable comedic actors and stand-up acts of the last ten years. -

Which makes it ironic Oscar was completely willing to go with Eddie Murphy a few years ago. Murphy bowed out because his producer of choice was fired over sex scandals, but apparently no one at the Academy had any problem with Murphy himself, probably because being such a recluse these days, his appearance might have given them their best ratings in years. But go back and watch one of his comedy specials from the '80s or early '90s or listen to one of his albums! He certainly didn't have enlightened views about homosexuals, to put it kindly. -
I noticed the OP hasn't returned to elaborate on her (?) post. I can't speak for the fans of the time. I could ask my parents what they thought, I suppose, though how much they remember of either of these actresses firsthand, I'm not sure. They were both born about the time Bette Davis' career started rolling, and while they would have been close to junior high age by the time of Gaslight, I don't know how much they would remember of young Angela Lansbury. I do know I find both women attractive in their younger years, and their "big eyes" do not bother me at all. You see, kids, there was actually a song about how sexy Ms. Davis' eyes were. It was a big hit! Unsure if the OP is aware of that. They were both unafraid to alter their appearance as the part required. Davis' forays into frumpiness are well-known, and Lansbury (who did start to look matronly fairly early on, though I'm not sure how much of that was makeup) played Elvis' mother, though she was only 10 years older than him, and Laurence Harvey's mother, though she was only THREE years older than him!

I do know the difference between Chris Rock and Kevin Hart! I'm pretty white, but I'm not THAT white! I saw Kevin Hart host something, the VMAs maybe? Which I think caused my confusion. -
I go straight from TCM's mistakes to this review on vulture.com, that gets the plot points correct but misidentifies cast members, saying the daughter was played by ANN HARDING! A great Christmas movie that not enough people talk about, It Happened on Fifth Avenue opens with the homeless sage Aloysius T. McKeever (Victor More) moving, as he does every Christmas season, into the luxurious Manhattan home of vacationing tycoon Michael J. O’Connor (Charles Ruggles). From there the film keeps piling on the complications as it breaks down the divide between the haves and the have-nots. McKeever is soon joined by a displaced World War II vet (Don DeFore) and O’Connor’s daughter Mary (Ann Harding), who doesn’t let on that she’s loaded and knows the house even better than those squatting there.

Yes, I would like to say while I grumbled about Spectrum in my previous post, pretty much my only complaints are with the price. There was one night about two years ago, where weirdly, out of about the 75 channels I get, TCM was the ONLY one not coming in. Certainly felt like the gods were against me that night as TCM was really the only channel I wanted to watch. The next morning, everything was back to normal. But other than that, I've never had any problems with Spectrum's service. Although I only watch Spectrum on an actual television. Sounds like you're trying to watch it on the Internet? Which I don't know anything about.

I honestly can't remember, which is maybe an indication of how little impact the Oscars have on me anymore. I'm sort of surprised nobody started a thread here about Hart's dismissal by the Academy after he was maybe the latest pick in history in terms of proximity to airtime. I thought maybe he was host last year? But I could just be hallucinating. He claims the Academy told him he would be fired unless he apologized for offensive tweets he made as many as seven years ago which were shoved back into everyone's face by vigilant Internet watchdogs who apparently had an agenda in getting him fired. He said nope, I've already apologized for those posts once. I'm not keep doing it for the rest of my life every time someone digs deep into the Internet to drag those tweets back up. And so, he's out. Who was the host last year? Kimmel again?

Kirk Douglas (1916-I'm Happy To Say He's Still With Us, Folks!)
sewhite2000 replied to TomJH's topic in General Discussions
Michael Douglas also claims this in the TCM promo that runs about his dad, and I'm not claiming to be any authority on what is true, but I also read recently in a Stanley Kubrick biography that initially Douglas was not going to give Trumbo credit and only did so after he'd already gotten an on-screen credit for Exodus. -
Victor Moore doesn't "stumble upon" the mansion at the beginning of the movie as Ben Mankewicz said; he's been coming there for years. And the owners don't "return home unexpectedly"; the estranged mother and father are actually both invited there by the daughter and must pretend they're homeless. It would be nice if whoever writes these things actually watched the movies they're writing about!

TCM's Christmas Promos (2018) - A wonderful (l) present!
sewhite2000 replied to yanceycravat's topic in General Discussions
I mean ... maybe Durante is famous for a song like "S'Wonderful, S'Marvelous" or something and "wonderful" was spelled with two L's in that song title? And this is a super-hip, knowledgeable reference? Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt? Or ... maybe it's just an awful mistake by a TCM employee who doesn't know how to spell ... -
Wow, well since this is something on which I've often posted and followed (like Angels with Dirty Faces hasn't aired for almost 10 years for some reason), I feel like this is a direct punch in my face. Since many of these threads are presumably about TCM and what they are or aren't showing, I don't feel I deserve the ridicule you've chosen to give me, albeit probably indirectly, since it's entirely possible you're unaware of my existence. Aren't we allowed to have an opinion about whether we like what TCM is choosing to show or not show?
-
I absolutely get what you're saying. I'm just saying this is probably the only circumstance under which a Holliday biopic will probably ever get made, and whatever compromises that entails, I would probably still watch it.

The "sleep your way to the top" ambition was skewered in some pre-Code films like Babyface. There was a brief time when Hollywood went out of its way to present such women as tramps, but the subject matter was eliminated by strict enforcement of the Hayes Code. In my opinion, wealthy white men hold more culpability than the women you want to blame because they wielded such immense riches and power, infinitely more than the women did. I'm actually pretty libertarian about the idea that a man and woman agree to have sexual intercourse for whatever reasons each party wants to get out of it. But forcing one to participate against one's will is always wrong, and 99.9 per cent of the time, I'm pretty sure it was wealthy white men doing the forcing. I would include coercion - i.e., you sleep with me or you don't work for Fox anymore - as forcing.

$20 million is probably a generous estimate. My Weekend with Marilyn from 2011, with Michelle Williams playing Marilyn Monroe, whom, I assume, is much better remembered (or at least her image is) than Holliday, grossed only $14 million. But, you know, to say "her life will just be exploited for some politically driven narrative" is, I think, a bit harsh. I imagine any biopic in this vein will actually accord respect and dignity to Ms. Holliday. And since no one has apparently expressed any interest in making a biopic about her in the 50 years or so prior to now, I personally will be okay with a picture that maybe has a political agenda if it respectfully honors her life and career, since no biopic about her was ever going to be made otherwise.
