1291 Based only on Luis Rainer, I'm going to guess The Great Waltz, which I have seen. But I don't know.
1292 Must be Henry V. No.
1294 is The High and the Mighty. Yes.
1296 is Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte. Yes.
1297 is The Deer Hunter. Yes.
1298 must be A Nightmare on Elm Street, though I don't remember Freddie Kruger ever being shaded like that. Almost looks deliberate, to make the movie harder to identify! But I have seen it.
1299 is Reversal of Fortune. Yes.
I haven't seen 1300, and I don't know what the others are. I've seen at least five.

Of course, the more I think about it, that seems weird to me. Why would I have looked up your other posts if you weren't the OP? Oh, well, thanks for confirming that thread actually existed at one time. I think James thought I was lying about it.

I vaguely remember one actress was suddenly substituted for another last year. I kind of think Natalie Wood was either the "substituter" or "substituteee". Maybe they're making it up to her this year. TopBilled, sorry to say that means it looks like the Republic film Angel and the Badman won't be airing after all.

Oops! Sorry.

Ask Chaya Bat! I don't know! Although I think I remember him making some kind of joke along the lines of "Having Movie X without doing So-and-So is kind of like making a sequel to Mamma Mia! and not having Meryl Streep in it."

Oddly, I saw the sequel and not the original. And Meryl is in the sequel - she shows up and does one number near the very end.

This exchange is only confusing me, so I will try to steer back to the original intent of the thread.
I don't know if this is exactly ending with a "career high", but I think to a generation younger than me, this character and franchise were quite beloved, James Stewart, providing the voice of a canine sheriff for his final role in An American Tail: Fievel Goes West.

My apologies to the late Mr. Vincent for so egregiously misidentifying him twice.

I am struggling with most of these. Here's what little I know or can guess at:
1281 is probably Garbo and Gilbert, but I don't watch many silents and can't identify it.
1283 is Red River. Yes.
1286 Ha ha ha, I didn't know Charles Bronson and John Denver ever made a movie together! Oh God, Do You Have a Death Wish? Oh, wait, maybe that's a woman ... I haven't seen it, whatever it is.
1288 is Thunderheart. No.
1289 is probably Mamma Mia! No.
1290 is Lincoln. Yes.
The others I have no idea.
Only two I can confirm that I've seen.

Never seen The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle, I think the only Fred and Ginger pairing I haven't at least seen part of.

Best Actress I would have given to Katharine Hepburn for SUMMERTIME (I know it's not on my top 10 of favorites but she gave one amazing performance in there, I can't deny there, and it's still a well-made film).
Yep, Summertime didn't make my Top 10 either, but I still picked her as Best Actress.
Also, I like Rebel Without a Cause as a film better, but I gave James Dean Best Actor for East of Eden.

TCM seems to love Monty Woolley, and I've been patiently waiting for almost 20 years for them to show his only Oscar-nominated performance.

There was another thread that asked us what our favorite movie year was, and I picked 1955. So I feel obligated to post here.
Caveat: I'm going to leave out The Ladykillers because it wasn't released in the US until 1956 and got an Oscar nomination that year. But I would like it to be known it would have been in my Top 10. That's okay - lets me squeeze in Night of the Hunter.
My 10 favorite movies of 1955:
1. Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray, India)
2. Night and Fog (Alan Resnais, France)
3. Guys and Dolls (Joseph Mankiewicz, USA)
4. Bad Day at Black Rock (John Sturges, USA)
5. Rebel Without a Cause (Nicholas Ray, USA)
6. Ordet (Carl Theodor Dreyer, Denmark)
7. Smiles of a Summer Night (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden)
8. The Mad Masters (Jean Rouch, France)
9. Marty (Delbert Mann, USA)
10. The Night of the Hunter (Charles Laughton, USA)
Best Director: Robert Aldrich, Kiss Me Deadly
Best Actor: James Dean, East of Eden
Best Actress: Katharine Hepburn, Summertime

Ghost Story I haven't seen, but I remember the trailers looking quite creepy on HBO when I was barely a teenager. I hope to check it out some day. It was the final film for both Fred Astaire and Melvyn Douglas.

1271 I feel it must be Follow the Fleet. Not sure which other films had Fred in a military uniform. I don't think I've ever seen this one all the way through.
1272 is probably The Paradine Case, which I have seen.
1273 is Phone Call from a Stranger. I think maybe it finally aired on TCM, though I watched it a long time ago on YouTube.
1274 is Auntie Mame. Yes.
1275 is Bulitt. Yes.
1276 is Travels with My Aunt. Yes
1277 I have some guesses based on Beth's comments, but I wouldn't have known without them, so I'll just say I don't know.
1278 is The Fugitive. Yes.
1279 is Dreamgirls. Yes.
1280 is The Old Man and the Gun. No.
I think I've seen seven, which is probably my high on these new (post-1,000) lists.

1261 is Cheyenne Social Club. Yes.
1262 is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Yes.
1263 is The Cotton Club. No.
1264 is The Breakfast Club. Yes.
1266 is First Wives Club. No.
1267 is Fight Club. Yes.
1269 is Dallas Buyers' Club. No.
1270 is Book Club. Yes.
I can't identify 1265 or 1268, though they both look familiar.
So, at least five.

Sorry, Al Pacino, not Dustin Hoffman!

I know a couple of people who are really into cycling who think it's the greatest movie ever made. It's like me, my love for baseball and Bull Durham, I guess. That's a movie I could watch a hundred times (and probably have) and love it every time. If ever I was a TCM Guest Programmer, I would ask if I could schedule it. But my non-baseball watching friends are typically very nonplussed by it. Although I had a gay friend in college who couldn't have cared less about sports, but he loved Susan Sarandon's performance, so maybe there's something in it for everybody.

Yes, I did the same thing.
I distinctly remember back when he only had like four posts, I went and read them. One was about the film festival, two about a price increase and one about Ben looking down and to the left. It was that one that made me want to read his other posts. I believe it was Dargo who asked if he was going to be a one-post wonder, which made me curious, so I went and read all of his posts. This was just a couple of weeks ago. I don't think memory could be that fuzzy that quickly. I posted something like, "Well, he has four posts, but he's certainly characteristic of one-post wonders in that he's a total newbie who immediately starts bashing Ben".
Anyway, it's not there now. It seems more likely to me the thread was deleted by a moderator than edited by Davehat. I can't prove it ever existed, so not much point in trying. If Dargo or anybody else remembers it, feel free to speak up.
-
Okay, I have no proof to offer, but I would swear in court Davehat started a thread about Ben looking down and to the left during his intro/outros. I remember because I commented on that thread (can't find my post either). It's possible the thread has been deleted, as most threads critical of TCM hosts are. Or it's possible I'm just wrong, but I really don't think I am.
-
Hmm I could be confused. Let me go back and see if I can find it the other post I thought I remembered.

I've only seen it once, and I thought it was pretty good. I know it's a cult favorite and much beloved in certain circles.

He doesn't like him. This is not his first bashing of Ben's presentation style.

Have you seen these 10 classic films..?

I just noticed 1293 is on tonight, but I got here to see everyone is already talking about that.
