MGM Silver Anniversary Picture intro omitted
sewhite2000 replied to skipd55's topic in General Discussions
I guess the only thing I wonder is TCM still seems to show a very heavy MGM/Warner Bros./RKO output, just like they always have (and whatever UA films ended up under MGM's control). Even if they do have to pay to lease these films (and one poster says Casablanca is now a very expensive rental), do they get any kind of discount to show the same films they always have most often? -
Thanks for some small insights into her relationship with Fontaine. Other than everyone always saying the two sisters were rivals, this is by far the most info I've ever read anywhere about how they felt about one another. I also liked very much seeing some photos of the two of them together. No mention at all of her personal life otherwise, however. Typically, I don't care too much about these things, but I can't help but wonder if she ever married and/or had children or if she's a lesbian. Not my business if she doesn't want to share such things

Who would you like to see honored as Star of the Month...?

They had a Dustin Hoffman SUTS day last year, I think, but he certainly has enough important films to qualify for a SOTM, if TCM could obtain them. It would be a nice kiss if they could honor some of these stars while they're still alive. I was sad to read Tony Curtis had always hoped for his own SOTM spotlight while he was still with us but never got one. -
Have you seen these 10 classic films..?

I've seen both Odd Man Out (I half-suspected that was what this was but not bold enough to guess so) and I Never Sang for My Father. Extraordinary I couldn't identify Hackman and Douglas. It's so obvious now once they've been revealed to me. Anyway, that means I've seen three of these. Think I've been between three and six for all of the new lists. -

That's certainly what I thought, but I'm afraid to comment on the concept of a TCM "library" anymore, as this seemed to anger a poster on a recent thread. -
It's just easier to refer to it that way, I guess, although TCM hosts aren't unaware of the distinctions, and I have seen them refer to films as "early Code" before, for example. I agree pre-Code isn't really a genre, though TCM has essentially marketed them as such.

Children of Actors who became famous as Actors

I only learned while reading some of David Lynch's recent memoirs that Eric DaRae, who memorably played the scary Leo Johnson on Twin Peaks, is the son of Aldo Ray, whom Lynch really wanted to cast in pretty much anything, but not long before his death, sadly, Ray told Lynch he just didn't think he could hold it together for an acting assignment anymore. I don't know else DaRae ever did, but he was impressive on that show. -
Does TCM just have those "Remembers" segments ready to go for everyone over a certain age the way they say the network news shows used to do with their tributes? That seemed really fast.

Some of the older ones look familiar, or at least I'm recognizing the actors, but I'm unable to identify any of them. 1137 is The Seduction of Joe Tynan. I'm intrigued, but I haven't seen it. 1139 is Boogie Nights. Yes. 1140 has a long title, I think The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Or something like that. Haven't seen it. So, I'm only sure that I've seen one, but maybe after some of the earlier ones are identified, it will turn out I've seen some of them. -

Lloyd Bridges was father of both Jeff and Beau Bridges. -

Given there's another thread devoted to the mother, I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher (father Eddie Fisher was also an occasional actor). -
I actually was somewhat sure it didn't (I say somewhat defensively), but I just parroted the way it had already been spelled, assuming everyone else on this thread knows more than me.

I've seen The Dolly Sisters, so I've seen four. -
Yes, I had to check out her identity on imdb. I would have guessed about 14-16 from that photo. But people look different at the same age. No one looking at Brad Pitt and me at the same time would guess we're about the same age, for example.

I suppose Burton and O'Toole only ever really did Beckett together, but Burton dropped in for a cameo in What's New (last word I probably can't type). -
I knew the narrator was a familiar voice, but I had to look it up to figure out it was Leonard Nimoy.

!!! Was somebody making a cameo here? What movie was it that Cagney and O'Brien were hanging out with Spencer Tracy sitting one row behind them? -

1121 is The Whole Town's Talking. Yes. 1122 Probably Andy Hardy, but there were like 20 of those. Unsure if I've seen this particular one. 1125 is Dead Ringer. Yes 1127 is Twins. Sigh. Yes. 1128 I remember this poster, but not the title. I never saw it. 1129 I think The Krays. No. 1130 Twin Falls, Idaho. No. I don't know the others. Only three I'm sure I've seen. -
So nice that Errol brought his daughter along for the ... wait (sputter), his WHAT?

I wouldn't put anything past Gary Oldman after seeing him pull off both Lee Harvey Oswald and Winston Churchill, but I thought Hopkins was just fine in the role. -

I would be okay with Lee Marvin if TCM would actually put some effort into being comprehensive. Let's go all the way from pre-Big Heat (whatever that was, I don't really know) up to at least Gorky Park.
