  1. Chaplin is getting an SUTS day in August, so the chances of him being SOTM in September are next to nothing, I would think. I'd be all for a Dana Andrews month.
  2. I'm typically not on here as much on Saturdays and Sundays. I see the answers have already been given before I could even guess. Let's see, I have seen: Cover Girl, Miracle on 34th Street, The Wrong Man, The Birdman of Alcatraz, American Graffiti, Mississippi Burning and Nixon. That's seven. I certainly wouldn't have been able to guess Tillie and Gus or Outpost in Malaya. I suspect I wouldn't have been able to guess The Wrong Man from that photo, even though I've seen it.
  3. I was always impressed by the cast of that one. You would think Jason Robards and Jean Simmons would have been big enough to headline their own movie.
  4. I have seen The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, so I've seen three.
  5. 1101 is The Crowd. I've loved what I've seen, but I must admit I've never sat down and watched it all the way from beginning to end, so I guess I have to put it in the "no" category. 1102 is Angels with Dirty Faces, which TCM is apparently unable to show anymore, but I saw it back when they could, so yes. 1103 My Friend Flicka? No. Long stretch there where I recognize most of the actors but have no idea what the movies are. 1108 is The Jazz Singer. Newer version. Yes. 1109 is Death Becomes Her. No. 1110 I don't know. Wow, so only two I can confirm I've seen. That's tied for an all-time low for me.
  6. I vaguely remember Eddie Murphy lambasted Garrett Morris for playing the king of the winged monkeys, saying things like, "A black man playing a monkey ... what did he possibly think he was doing for us a culture while he was taking home his paycheck?" Years later, a bitter Morris pointed out Murphy made hundreds of millions for providing the voice for a donkey.
  7. I rented Road to Rio many years ago from Blockbuster, which was just as well, because I think it's the only Road movie TCM has never shown, for whatever reason. I've also seen The Sin of Madelon Claudet, though it's been quite some time. I couldn't identify Helen Hayes in her shockingly disheveled state in that photo! So, looks like I've seen five.
  8. Ker may be a one-post wonder, but at least her one-post take was refreshing, IMO. 99.9% of all one-post wonders around here are either "TCM showed a movie that came out after 1960. Why oh why can't it be like it used to be when Robert Osborne hand-picked all the movies?" or "Some host on TCM said that somebody or something in the last 100 years was racist or not PC, and they're WRONG! Why oh why can't TCM be like it used to Robert Osborne wrote all his own commentaries?"
  9. I noted with some interest that the final shot of that promo is Armstrong from High Society in B&W, except that this is a color movie. Ted Turner used to get criticized for wanting to colorize everything, but I rarely see a clip from a movie shown without its color (for reasons that aren't really clear to me).
  10. It feels like I'm discussing some long-ago era, but I'd certainly noticed increasingly bloated running times for superhero fare in recent years. That last Avengers movie was three and a half hours. I thought it could have had an hour cut out of it and not lost any coherence (not that it had a lot). I saw it in a packed house (wonder if such a thing will ever happen again), and everyone seemed really enthralled, so I suppose such a thing is possible, even for the young. Anything other than a superhero movie, though, and I seriously doubt it.
  11. Could you elaborate on those uncharacteristically vapid reasons?
  12. 1082 It's probably Jewel Robbery with the special "relaxing cigarettes"! Yes. 1084 Must be a Road movie, most of which I've seen, but I have no idea which one from the photo. 1086 is Love is a Many-Splendored Thing. Yes. 1087 Looks like Olivier as Othello? What with all the blackface content currently being scrubbed from the streaming services, I doubt this will ever be shown anywhere again. I haven't seen it (And just in case I'm abysmally unobservant and this is an actual black man, apologies). 1088 Death Wish? No. 1089 Henry V. No. 1090 The Talented Mr. Ripley. Yes. The others I don't know. Looks like I've only seen three of these, maybe four, depending on 1084.
  13. Ha ha ha that photo is amazing. Imagine a child being able to sit that patiently on a stool now for more than one second without either a phone or some sort of gaming device to stare at.
  14. I'm of a generation that grew up basically unaware of her existence, as her acting work was confined almost entirely to some scattered TV shows for a good 20 years, none of which I think I ever saw (or if I did, I didn't know who she was). I may have been vaguely aware as a first generation Star Wars fanatic that she was Carrie Fisher's mother, and I suppose there was some buzz in the press that the Shirley MacLaine character in Postcards from the Edge (which I saw in the theater) was essentially supposed to be Reynolds. Though at that time I still may not have been able to pick the real Reynolds out of a lineup. So I may not be the best candidate to respond to this. I've certainly had time to get acquainted with her during my years of TCM viewing, with a good chunk of her work having been done at MGM. I think I've probably reacted somewhat negatively to her due to TCM overexposure, which certainly isn't her fault. I do find her adorable (and dare I say sexy?) in a lot of her roles, and clearly she was an immensely talented "triple threat". The Catered Affair is a nice example of what she could do with a straight dramatic role, and I wish there had been a few more of those. You are correct that she never won an in-competition award from any of the major organizations, though she has a Hersholt humanitarian award and a number of lifetime achievement awards.
  15. Wow, that's a pretty depressing recounting of the film's history, none of which was discussed in the intro/outro. This was a new one to me, and I'm glad I checked it out because of the Holiday and Armstrong performances.
  16. I feel like I missed the 1070s. I don't know if you accidentally skipped them, or I just need to scroll back more. Anyway ... I'm not doing well at all with these. 1083 is obviously Carmen Miranda, but I probably haven't seen 80 per cent of her movies, so I can't identify it. 1084 is State Fair. Yes. 1086 is Blue Hawaii. Yes. 1087 is Papillon. Yes. 1088 Couldn't say which Rob Lowe movie. I don't know that I ever saw any of his heartthrob movies except Class. 1090 It's Jake Gyllenhall, who I think is a fantastic actor, but I'm not identifying the movie. Anyway, there are only three I'm absolutely sure I've seen.
  17. I guess I don't pay as much attention to subtlety of language and expression as you, Dargo. But I'll try to listen to that the next time I see a Ben intro/outro, which could be tomorrow night, who knows? (I'm relatively sure he didn't use the words "actor" or "actress" to discuss Beach Party, anyway). I don't know why I couldn't see that thread. I swear it was like it was gone from my computer screen for a time. Perhaps I was playing the drinking game too much.
  18. I just wanted to post how many times Ben M. glanced to his left during the two-minute introduction to Beach Party. I counted 42 leftward glances in roughly 120-second intro, so slightly more than once every three seconds. Presumably, that's where the laptop standing in for the studio teleprompter is. Anyway, either this thread is already on Page Four or older, or it go deleted. I was getting serious Tired Head trying to find it. I couldn't drink as many times as Ben looked left. I'd be out cold before the two minutes was up (or throwing up).
  19. Looks like in the last week or two, all the films are "opened up" now with cast, plot description, etc. You don't have to click on the movie title to see all that info anymore.
  20. I am having a hard time with the new list. Here's all I know for sure: 1062 I'm not sure if Katharine Hepburn ever did a version of Mary, Queen of Scots. If she did, I haven't seen it. 1065 is Come Back, Little Sheba. Yes. 1066 is The Big Country. Yes. 1067 The Wackiest Ship in the Army? I've seen it, but not sure if this is it. 1068 I don't know, but I'm always up to watch anything with Lee Remick. 1069 is The Prisoner of Second Avenue. Yes. 1070 is Chariots of Fire. Saw parts of it many times on HBO years ago but never all the way through. No. The others I have no idea. Looks like I've seen only four.
  21. I probably saw Die Another Day. It would seem unlikely that I missed a Bond movie. Thought I have no memory of it, I'm going to say I've seen five of these.
  22. 1051 is Jamaica Inn. No. 1052 is National Velvet. Yes. 1053 is Broken Arrow. No. 1054 is Bus Stop. Yes. 1055 is Topkapi. Yes. 1056 is The Sand Pebbles. No. 1057 is The Way We Were. Yes 1058 is Weekend at Bernie's? A ha ha ha ha. Don't think I ever actually saw it, so no. 1059 is Ulee's Gold. No. 1060 Looks like Halle Berry, but this is the only one I can't identify. So, there are only four of these I'm absolutely sure I've seen.
  23. I don't know if it's just me, but whenever Jakeem posts one of these obits, I can initially only see like one paragraph of text and one photo. Then if I come back 12 hours or 24 hours later, suddenly the whole post is there. Weird.
