I also like that they programmed the Hammer films (mostly) in blocks that make sense, such as an evening of Terence Fisher's Frankenstein films, etc. Very little is being shown that I don't a;ready have on DVD or DVDR, but it's a better line-up than in the past couple years.

>>I've read that some folks consider Matango to be an "early film" from the Ishiro Hondo-Toho Studios catalog. He'd also been directing since 1950, though the films were mostly (I've read) domestic dramas until he tackled GOJIRA. Intriguingly he alternated his Kaiju with other types of films until the early 1960s. He wasalso a close friend of Kurosawa & even finished up the latter's final film, DREAMS (at Kurasawa's request), when Kurasawa's health did not permit him to finish it himself.

>>This is a classic love story about 2 people overcoming their religious upbringings.A devoted Jewish Man falls in love with a Christian woman at the disapproval of his family. Is this a remake of ABIE'S IRISH ROSE?

*I am Curious Yellow Submarine* You'll all understand why - this being a family-friendly site - I don't provide a plot synopsis...

There's also the question of whether or not the novel on which the Ingram film & the remake is based is under copyright. The date of the original film is not a clear indicator of whether or not it's gone PD. And they revise the copyright law just about annually...

WHY THE HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS OF BOWERY BOYS?
HarryLong replied to a topic in General Discussions
Thank you, Ray. I wonder if we oughn't just start a thread entitled "Why doesn't TCM show only the movies *I* want to see" & lump all appropriate comments there? -
>>I remember her fumbling lines (did they shoot in one take?)<< It was taped live for broadcast about an hour after shooting wrapped. They'd probably have stopped & done another take if a wall fell over... Then again, maybe not. I recall Jonathan Frid leaning "casually" against a wall to keep it upright while the monster, Adam, banged away on it from the other side. Edited by: HarryLong on Jul 23, 2010 1:25 PM

A Fan Tribute to William Castle .............!!

You'd think Rosemary deCamp could at least have tried looking scared... (Anyone else have the suspicion that the shadow is thrown by Margaret Hamilton?) -

IN A MAJOR FILM, for the whole world to see and understand. I think you're over-estimating the impact that GODS AND MONSTERS had and that anyone who saw it gave a damn that George Cukor or David Lewis - if they even knew who they were - were gay. Maybe a few horror fanboys were shocked about the James Whale info (not that it was any secret either), but I think "tremendous controversy" is more that a tad overstating the case. Likely there were several reasons Cukor was dropped from GWTW. One is not just because Cukor was gay, but rather that he supposedly knew some things about Gable because of it (but wouldn't have Gable worked hard once he had star clout to get Cukor fired from MGM??). [There are those who know instantly what I'm referring to; there's no reason to be specific about the rumnors here.] There's also the fact that Cukor & Selznick were disagreeing about how to handle the film... the old Artistic Differences explanation. It's informative that Selznick & Cukor remained friends after the firing...

>.If an original Nitrate print of this film or PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in it's 1925 form, not the 1929 re-cut Image's several-years-ago (2005? 2006?) Ultimate Edition of PHANTOM included a copy of the 1925 cut. I'm not sure what the source was, but it was petty banged up. But it is somewhat different (& a good deal better) than the 1929 re-cut most of us have been familiar with for so long.

That would likely be the correct site. The store has been a NYC institution for years. (And I believe Kim is an Oriental surname, not a first name...)

>>Not only is the film ?Gods and Monsters? accurate, but it also made a tremendous controversy by involving several other famous names. Most notable was George Cukor and then David Lewis that pretty well signified their hidden lifestyle. David Lewis spoke quite openly with Whale biographer James Curtis for JAMES WHALE: A NEW WORLD OF GODS AND MONSTERS, which was published in 1982, predating the Christopher Bram novel (FATHER OF FRANKENSTEIN) on which GODS & MONSTERS is based by about 13 years. GEORGE CUKOR: A DOUBLE LIFE was published a year before the film GODS & MONSTERS came out & was quite forthcoming about Cukor?s sexuality. (Not that anyone who cared didn?t know about it long before then.) So precisely how did the film make tremendous controversy? >>and it's always been believed he committed suicide by drowning himself. Given he left a suicide note, it?s difficult to reach any other conclusion.

Trivia-I know there's too much but here's another

I think Johnny Wesimuller was divorced from his first wife at MGM's behest & then married Lupe Velez very shortly thereafter. Can't recall the first wife's name (but IMDB sez it was a Bobbe Arnst - is that cheating?) -
>>"Captain Marvel" Maybe the best of all the serials I?d say it?s a toss-up between that (an action serial) and the more plot-based DRUMS OF FU MANCHU >>PEANUTS There was an animated feature: A BOY NAMED CHARLIE BROWN

HORROR HOSPITAL has been around for awhile; I got it a couple yeras ago. Possibly this is a new disc? (Went to Amazon & answered my own question. This one is from MPI; mine was from Image) I just read about the new, uncut version of MURDER MANSION within the past wek or two & I can't recall who'd releasing it. Severin or Drak Sky seem like possible labels. It's not listed on Amazon yet.

>>Perhaps I am remembering just the part at the secret lair, but it seems as if the whiteboard set technique was used throughout the picture. I may be wrong, but my impression is that bits of old steel engravings were cut out & affixed to a glass between the camera & the actors in many shots as well. -
They could bring back Zacherly - that'd be Retro.
