One of the people who truly deserve the accolade "genius." "Some Like It Hot" and Avanti!" and so many more are tremendous. I believe the best films include at least one character who goes through changes, and Wilder hits the mark every time.

I have always believed a romantic comedy which uses music very well called "Waltz Across Texas" with Anne Archer and Mary Kay Place is under-rated, but I am not sure if it is old enough to meet the standards of being called "classic." I don't know what that standard is.

John Wayne played a great John Wayne, but Marlon Brando played whatever part he was given. Can anyone imagine John Wayne as the psychiatrist in "Don Juan de Marco"? No, but Brando was brilliant.
Any actor who takes chances is going to have some failures, so of course, Brando had some.
John Wayne had a pleasing personality and voice, but I think it is a mistake to confuse that with acting.

I agree, and I hope one of the rarely shown gems he picks is Olivia DeHavilland's "To Each His own." Her character ages about 27 years in this film and it's a wonderful performance and script.

"All the President's Men," as I was a reporter in the Watergate era and I remember how two nobodies, who would not give up, brought down a presidency purely through the power of the press. The overhead scene in the Library of Congress is riveting. I also remember the wire services trying to keep up with Woodward and Bernstein, and reading The New York Times wire nightly, which broke its own exclusives sometimes.
But as a personal inspiration, nothing beats "Ray," not to mention his wonderful music.

I love many Hitchcock films, including this one, and when I watch Hedren climb up to the attic stairs, I always recall an interview with her in which she said she asked the director, "What is my motivation for climbing up into this attic?" and he said, "Your motivation is, I am telling you to do it!"
I understand she was genuinely terrified for a long time after making that scene in which her character is pecked bloody by birds.

For me it's the final scene in "Mrs. Miniver" when the English squadron flies overhead after the congregation sings "Onward, Christian Soldiers." I cry every single time.

I believe people who are creeped out or surprised or think this movie is stupid have no conception of the dark closet homosexuals were shoved into until the past two decades. Intellectual women like these characters would have reflected the prejudices of their times.
