  1. Paramount's Travis Banton for Claudette Colbert in _The Gilded Lily_, 1935.
  2. I have to say that I prefer Cary in comedy; although, he is equally adept at drama. But, my absolute favorite role was Walter Burns in _His Girl Friday_. Walter Burns
  3. Designs for Rita Hayworth _Angels Over Broadway_ - Kalloch _My Gal Sal_ - Gwen Wakling _You Were Never Lovelier_ - Irene _Lady From Shanghai_ - Jean Louis _Gilda_ - Jean Louis
  4. The Lanes: Priscilla, Rosemary, and Lola
  5. Well, I have to admit that I am for the glamour. I prefer Eliza after the transformation. That is one reason I am such a big film buff, the images! They aren't like anything we have today. They are by far and above any ordinary existence on this planet. They are pure fantasy, and it gets me everytime. That is why I started this thread. Who dresses like this? Who looks like this? Stars! And, who made them look like this? Designers! And, of course the make-up artists, and the photographers! I think I'll start a thread on the photographers next. Much of the "art" I have hanging in my home is from the Hollywood Dream Factory. Down the hallway to the bedrooms is a gallery of stars: Gable, Cooper, Lamarr, Garbo, Taylor, Dietrich, Harlow, Flynn, Power, Hayworth, etc. People who visit marvel at the photograhs of the glamour years. I can't get enough. And, as to your remark about not remembering some of the costumes from My Fair Lady, these are just the designs for the film. Not all of them were used. The grey one wasn't and the last black and white one wasn't either. But, I had to show them. They ARE marvels! What a talent Beaton was.
  6. This is one of my favorite Garbo pics because of its colorization. It gives you an idea of what she might have looked like in person with her blonde hair and blue eyes. The eyes are dark blue. I have know a few women in my life with dark blue eyes and they are beautiful. Most blue eyed people have light blue eyes. Garbo's blonde hair and blue eyes were probably both dark, so she often photographed as if she had brown hair and brown eyes.
  7. Gene Tierney and her husband Oleg Cassini
  8. Hey, gracie. I agree, it is a great movie. My favorite scene, of course, is the last one where she SCREAMS, "But, because I am mad . . . !" I love to watch that scene of victory over and over again. And, yes, it might be wise not to encourage your husband to watch it!!!
  9. Cecil Beaton designs for Audrey Hepburn in _My Fair Lady_
  10. Well, from what I read, they were more concerned with the scene in the inn where Garbo crosses the bed reminiscing about the tryst she and Gilbert just had. So, they probably thought the scene you talked about as being tame. Nevertheless, she did get away with a lot in her films, and she wanted to do more. She wanted to play Dorian Gray! When she read the script, she notified Mayer that she wanted the part. He ignored the message.
  11. Ah! This has to be the one: And, yes, she said that. She was not flighty or cutsie or wisecracking. Any role she consented to play was deeply thought out and calculated. Not that other actresses didn't think through their roles before they played them, but she was usually "heavy," and you went to see her because she sufferred. struggled within herself, and often died. That is one reason critics said she had such a difficult time playing Grusinskaya; although, I think she was much too hard on herself because, in my opinion, she did a fantastic job with the role. And, she stretched herself with Ninotchka. She probably could have done more, but she was so stubborn, and the studio protected that, so she always got her own way, which definitely limited her efforts.
  12. Beautiful, Jackie! That coat at the bottom of your gallery is Fantastic!
  13. metsfan, here are the only two costumes Garbo wore that even remotely resemble that outfit. That one is definitely not by Adrian. I don't know who that is. I thought maybe _The Hunchback of Notre Dame,_ but it was the wrong gal. Wild Orchids Mata Hari
  14. Travilla for Marilyn Monroe in _Gentlemen Prefer Blondes!_ The discarded costume (what a shame!):
